Diner Reviews
  • "This was our first time dining at Roots Bistro Gourmand. The dining experience was very different from any restaurant the we have been to. I had one of the specials, surf and turf which consisted of cubes of steak and tuna. Both were cooked to perfection, but served cold. In addition to that everything on the plate was pureed which is disappointing especially since you are told by the wait staff that everything is farm to table not farm to blender. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his dinner which was combination of squid, octopus, scallops and shrimp. The oyster appetizer was excellent. We will go back again and hopefully have a different experience."

  • "Outside of Babylon village is this little gem . I had the braised short ribs and my wife had the butter poached lobster both were excellent , our waiter was knowledgeable with the wine pairing-his suggestions were right on point, can't wait to go back and try the other items on the menu."

  • "The food at Roots Bistro Gourmand was outstanding, a creative use of old and mostly new techniques. Lots of foams and emulsions on a plate with amped up flavor. The signature cocktails were unique and packed quite a punch. The appetizers my wife and I shared were both delicious and unexpected. Dinners were well-portioned and full of flavor. And dessert was incredible. There were all kinds of diners, too, from singles at the bar to families with small children. The only slight criticism was that the waiter didn't make the rounds to our table often enough to keep our drinks refreshed, but given the generous pourings that was probably a good thing."

  • "We went with another couple and all of us really enjoyed Roots. The food was fabulous with no complaints or criticisms. We order several different small portions so we could try more. All of them were just about perfect. The decor is nice and it is not crowded or noisy even though all of the tables were full. The wine list is good and the beer list is even better. We will go back again,"

  • "From start to finish, the food and service contributed to a magical dining experience. We will be back for more!"

  • "Food was outstanding! Unique, creative, and delicious! We chose the "4 course Chef's Choice" option. Our server paired each course with a wine and the pairings were spot-on. Everything was fabulous!"

  • "This was not what we expected. Dinner for 3 people took over 3 hours, and when the food finally came it was not that good. The presentation looks like they are trying too hard but missed the mark. The crowd seemed like teachers on date night. Everyone was trying to impress everyone else, whether it was the food, or the guests. This places only saving grace was that the cocktails were pretty good."

  • "We have eaten here twice and plan to continue to come back. The food at this gastropub rivals some of the finest restaurants that we have eaten at in NYC. The service is excellent and the menu is full of pleasant surprises."

  • "This cozy little South Shore Gem has a warm and inviting atmosphere with a good bar, high and low table dining. Good live music. And a delicious and creative menu. Philippe is a master in the kitchen combining unusual ingredients to make this a dining delight. This is truly a special place a feast for all your senses."

  • "I went here on Valentines Day so there was a limited menu for the evening. I can't wait to return and try the many other offerings. If you're into French food, this is a nice place to go."

  • "Finally got to go for dinner. Glad I did, had a great experience. Started with a cheese plate of three types, which was pretty much a meal. The menu is French style. They accommodate for vegans and vegetarians which we are. Just let them know and the chef will create a dish for you. We wound up getting a goat cheese gnocchi with roasted vegetables, simply amazing. Probably one of the best dishes I've ever had. Staff is extremely kind and attentative. Will definitely be goin back for lunch, since we didn't get the frites."

  • "Foodies will be ecstatic to find this gastronomic delight in Suoffolk county. The Ambiance is adorable, the service was friendly. The wines come by the glass come quartino size . Every dish in the French bistro was delicious . I will go back soon for sure."

  • "The sauces were very good as was menu selection. They were out of 2 of the wines I had selected (1 I can understand-- but 2??) The portion of meat for the short ribs was very large- for the rack of lamb-- VERY small. The meat itself for the short ribs was a disappointment. The dessert-- the yogurt/olive oli cake was FABULOUS----- but the was literally 2 small bites of the cake. the decor was a little lacking in my view and it was EXTREMELY noisy."

  • "Incredible food. Love it here. Great atmosphere in the restaurant. The only drawback is it's very pricey, but for a special occasion we find it is well worth it."

  • "We really wanted to like this restaurant, because we loved this chef when he was at O's. But the service was very slow. The waiter was very nice, but not as attentive as he should have been. After sitting for 30 minutes we had to ask the busboy to bring bread. My duck was excellent as was the cabbage soup. My husband wanted the lamb shank but they ran out of it so he ordered the lobster we didn't realize it charred meant totally burnt It had a burnt charcoal taste that was not appetizing and when we mentioned this to the waiter he said that was because it was charred. It should have said burnt lobster. He did give us a very nice port after dinner and the almond cake was amazing, so I will give this restaurant another chance"

  • "Ok food but not worth the 1 hour wait, and price. Server messed up and didnt fire my courses so I was waiting an hour to receive my food. NEVER did my server ONCE acknowledge the fact or took any accountability that he forgot to fire my food until the check came of corse; thats when he decided to apologize about his awful service. It was too late by then. Noisy, food ok, a little over thought in my opinion."

  • "I was looking for a sophisticated, grown-up restaurant where I could meet a friend for a great meal and glass of wine AND bring my 1-year ol. RBG delivered on all fronts, They seated us, including a high chair, at a nice table in the back where we would be out of the way of the crowd. They went out of thier way to give us great service, even serving my daughter a nice piece of soft brioche. Food is always amazing, and don't leave without trying garlic truffle hand cut fries. I think I've spolied my daughter for any fast food fries, but that's ok; I'm happy to have a baby with discriminating taste! It is also romantic and a vibrant, laid-back bar scene; my husband and I enjoyed many meals here pre-baby."

  • "From beginning to end I was "wowed" with each course!!! A friend and I ate soup to nuts and could not stop tasting each others dishes!!! That resulted in 3 first courses, each an entrée and each a dessert and several drinks! The pricing is fit to the quality and presentation of the food so for those reviews that I read prior to dinning here, remember, most all of the items are sourced locally and most everything is prepared in house!!!!! I had a lengthy conversation with a server who was quite informative and made our experience that much better. Amazing food,, drinks & staff!!! See you soon!"

  • "The ambiance was relaxing, and the menu reflects an array of items that you're not going to find in too many places. Each item, whether it be in the start section or the main dish section, is paired with ingredients to complement, even if it's just there to enhance a sauce or garnish. For example, The walnut kalmata olive soil is not a typo - it's ground walnuts and olives that resembles soil. That was part of a start item. This place is for someone who appreciates ingredients, menu balance and pairing, preparation and quality ingredients. You don't have to be a gourmand cook to enjoy the food here but if you are, you'll love the experience. The portions are perfect."

  • "I have been to Roots numerous times becaause the potential was always there, and I thought that a few minor changes would make this place great. However, I think that New Years Eve was the last time. The ideas are great and the product is great I am just not sure they have mastered the execution. Believe it or not the best part of the dinner was the dessert and I am not even a dessert guy. Something is missing from the food and its not creativity or product i really just think its not seasoned properly or the flavor combinations don't work, or maybe they just have too much going on on the plate. Not sure but it seems to fall short. I just hate feeling after a dining experience that I was short changed, and that was the feeling I had."

  • "I've officially eaten here so many times, I've lost count! Every time I come I'm surprised by an new special, or something on the menu that I haven't tried, and yet still haven't been disappointed. The best part is its so local!!!"

  • "Although we dine out all the time, I was put off by the word "gourmand" so never visited. A gourmet and epicure....are inviting words. But to sophisticated people, a gourmand is a glutton, a greedy, ravenous eater; the name turned us off. I am glad we figave Roots a try. They have a fussy menu; so, it was bit difficult to order. However, everything we ordered was exceptional. I had the tagliatelle with chorizo and clams. My husband had oysters and small plates with tasty meats. The waitress told my husband 3 small plates would NOT be enough; so, he added oysters. Then, he couldn't finish the 3 small plates. Maybe she is a gourmand. Anyway, she talked us into ordering too much food. The presentation of the food was excellent."

  • "I have never been disappointed with any meal at roots. Every time I come I am impressed with the creative new editions to the menu. Always try the daily specials, they are always superb! The drink selection is equal to the food menu, it is both creative, unique and delicious. I cannot speak highly enough of this restaurant!"

  • "Having been to Roots a few times, we chose to celebrate a special occasion by dining there last Friday. I can honestly think that the menu keeps getting better! The combination of flavors in each dish is outstanding--I am consistently impressed with the depth of flavor and creativity. Looking forward to our next visit very soon!"

  • "Food is very good. Seems like they could use more people to take orders. Drinks very slow to come to table. they didn't honor the opentable reservation. I received a call that I had to come in earlier to sit at a table in the regular dining area, If I didn't I would have had to sit at a high top table which I didn't want for 3 of us. Acoustics are bad as well making it hard to hear."

  • "This was our 4th time dining at Roots. The food was amazing. We had the restaurant week menu with the addition of a 4th course which was octopus. We brought friends with us and they couldn't stop raving about the food. They have a tasting menu which is a nice way to taste several items on the menu. The menu offers several dishes as small plates so you could also create your own tasting menu. Can't wait to go back. There's always something new to try!"

  • "The food at Roots is top notch. Very creative and delicious. The servers are unfailingly friendly, but overwhelmed. There simply aren't enough of them to efficiently serve. My advice: get there very early to avoid the crowds, before the staff gets stretched thin."

  • "Restaurant week menu was very limited but did have some well-prepared items. Too many items had beets which I happen to be allergic to. Wine choices rather limited and therefore pairings with the wine flight didn't mesh well. Butternut squash soup was delicious, as was the chicken/prosciutto roulade. Liked having live music but could turn down the volume to allow for conversation without shouting."

  • "Attention to detail in; look, feel, and taste! If you like to go out and enjoy the finer things in life this is a great place to try. My wife and I have been to Roots a couple of times now and it gets better and better each visit (probably because we get more adventerious with trying the hard to pronounce menu choices). large portions (App: w/ 2 cheese that were huge/ delicious and one meat choice and it came with toast points and jam), flavor (items like butternut squash soup and pork belly entree...yummy!), and lastly feel (a smaller home turned into cool, vibrant, unique night out). I can see us enjoying Roots for years to come, just hanging out at the bar for a cheese platter and glass of wine or enjoying another marvelous meal. Thanks!"

  • "Food is really outstanding and well worth going for. Unfortunately service is lacking and needs to be brought way up to match the quality of the food. They are very nice and personable, but not very competent and not good quality service you'd expect with food that is this good. That being said it's a great place with outstanding food and service that tries hard. Hopefully they can improve upon that and they will be one of the top restaurants in Long Island."

  • "Have been there several times and the food has been awesome each time. I am a vegetarian and the chef has whipped me up something (not on the menu) twice and both times it was OUTSTANDING! My meat & seafood eating boyfriend absolutely loved everything he had ordered as well. Definitely will continue to dine here."
