RootFreggan awesomeRoot takes you on a tour of food. Earthy, and totally non-traditional of New Orleans. So with it. Beat in New Orleans.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMNot your usual New Orleans CuisineIf your looking for something really different, this is the place for you. Not your usual New Orleans home style dishes. Unusual menu. Great for those with adventurous taste buds, but you can't get regular New Orleans Style dishes here. They are open late, so that's great after a night out.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMUnique and Delicious! The shrimp/deviled egg starter was one of the best foods I've ever tasted.
Ladies bring a jacket it was freezing!5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMCompletely UniqueWe like to dine in excellent and unique restaurants and Root did not disappoint in any way. The dishes and their presentation were unique and flavorful, and beautifully plated. The ingredients were local and well sourced. Rather than gush on, I can simply say if you like fine and unique food, you will love this place.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGood lunch spotLunch menu was varied and interesting. Went with a group, no problems with reservation or service. Food was delicious, can't wait to Ho back for dinner5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMA must goWhat a dinning experience. I have never been more impressed with the staffs knowledge of a menu, not only were they informed on how the food was prepared, but where it came from and how it was grown...most impressive was how the food tasted, the combination of ingredients was out of this world....I have NEVER had a better meal. This was a fantastic experience! We had several dietary requirements, from a vegetarian, gluten free & dairy free and they did not hesitate to accommodate us.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMThe root vegetable salad andThe root vegetable salad and the whole roasted market fish were phenomenal!!5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMRoot is for FoodiesVery busy and loud so don't go for a quiet romantic dinner. But do go if you like very different and delicious original spins on creole favorites. Seems like all diners were enjoying all of the Menu entrees and desserts as well. Be prepared to spend about $85 per person if you only order one glass of wine. Yes, I would return but for a special occasion.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMLike nothing else out thereRoot is simply amazing- words cannot do it justice. The menu is incredible and the service is outstanding. Every item we ordered showed the chef's passion for cooking and the servers did a fantastic job of communicating it. Root has truly raised the bar.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMHot Spot in the Warehouse District!Great spot in New Orleans with inventive cuisine and bursting with flavors. What a cool find! Definitely will return next year when we are back for Jazzfest!5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMCharacuterie plate was nearlyCharacuterie plate was nearly sensational, esp. the tongue, pickled green & red strawberries, and other sides, though the cured (dried) lamb lacked flavor; the chicken wings tasted like coated with BBQ potato chips and were meaty and perfectly cooked; nice wine selection well priced; duck/bacon fat rilette fine with strawberry mustard accompanying; tendon was more tofu, less tendon; pickled shrimp and deviled eggs wonderful; overall very well done, not in any way too molecular (we have had such gastromonic adventures, Root is well rooted in classic cuisine)5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMBirthday! We went here for my partner's birthday, and we were blown away! We've lived in New Orleans for over a decade and know good food, and we really enjoyed the twist they put on their dishes, using uncommon ingredients as well as regular ingredients done in unusual ways.
We were treated like royalty - had the best seat in the house (plush leather booth) and a salad on the house. Super nice wait-staff. Wonderful experience - I'd highly recommend!4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMMolecular Gastro meet Farm to TableROOT has a wonderfully imaginative and perfectly executed menu. The presentations are gorgeous and creative - I would even say "out of the box" except that my Cohiba Smoked Scallops were actually served in a box, a cigar box that is. Their charcuterie and pates are the really outstanding feature here.4/29/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic addition to my JazzFestFantastic addition to my JazzFest restaurant schedule. Innovative menu; extraordinary preparation; chemical cuisine that, as is always a potential, was at times gimmicky yet otherwise worked well, and the combination with fresh veggies was inspirational and a remarkable taste sensation, umami. Only regret was that there was no tasting menu and for some reason no points added by OpenTable.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMWe discovered this amazingWe discovered this amazing restaurant for our first night in New Orleans! The bar has been set very high for the rest of our weekend. The food was outstanding. The sea scallops served in a cigar box was a unique and fun way to serve the dish. Thumbs up from start to finish.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMSignature drinks were great.Signature drinks were great. Food was fantastic . Well trained staff.
Very refreshing--rivals New york's and Los Angeles's best (where I live).
Can't remember the last time I bothered to write a review, but this was the best meal I had in a long time. Look forward to eating here the next time I'm in town.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMBooked 3 mths ago having googledBooked 3 mths ago having googled best restaurants and found Root listed as one to watch by the local newspaper.
We're overseas (NZ) visitors where there is good restaurant scene in Auckland - lots of fusion menus.
This was our first night visiting N'Orleans and we were excited to experience the local cuisine.
Root was fantastic. Our party of five shared 4 starters, 3 entrees and 3 desserts having discussed the menus with the very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Every dish was a visual delight and tasted delicious, with lots of the dishes challenging conventional thinking e.g. ingredients used to make a dessert.
Overall a little noisy (courtesy of next table diners), a little cool and a little dim - but hey one to remember for ages.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMOur dining experience at RootOur dining experience at Root was fantastic. The food was adventurous and beautifully presented. My party was thrilled to taste dishes that we have never before seen on menus in New Orleans. The only flaw was that some of the dishes, particularly the scallops, were too salty, but overall the food was unique and delicious. Thanks also to our wait staff, Rachel & Kevin, who were knowledgable about the food and wine and most attentive.4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMStart with some charcuterie,Start with some charcuterie, swing into the pickled shrimp and deviled eggs, try the oysters, finish with pork belly.
And don't forget cocktails AND dessert.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMPhenomenal experience! ThePhenomenal experience! The contradiction of the fanciest food set against a totally laid back atmosphere is unique and fun. The most eclectic and creative menu creations ever seen by us in our very experienced pursuit of great food and wine. Jeff & Debbie Plagenhoef4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWe are Vegan and we knew goingWe are Vegan and we knew going in that in NOLA we were going to find it hard to get great Vegan food. The waiter was very nice and worked extremely hard to make our meal experience lovely. They made some modifications for us and that was helpful. We ate their Noodle Bowl, the noodles were over cooked. We assumed that they didn't know that the noodles shouldn't fall apart. They had some really tasty root vegetable dishes. The beers were had were so tasty, again the waiter did a great job helping us choose.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMI. Could not have asked forI. Could not have asked for better service. Great team. The interior is casual and extremely comfortable. I had read about Root in the Los Angeles Times and my experience exceeded even that description. Thank you to the '' other LA ''4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful meal...Root is likeWonderful meal...Root is like no other restaurant! The food was delicious, as well as fun and quite interesting. The staff was remarkable in their knowledge of the foods and how they were prepared. Certainly a 5 star experience.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was truly interestingThe food was truly interesting and excellent, however the service was laughable in it's ridiculous hipster pretentiousness. From a two minute monologue on the details of the acquisition and preparation of "Face Bacon" to a final speech bestowing all the virtues of the culinary world upon a slice of carrot cake, it was an exhausting 2 hour plus experience causing us to not make a return visit with colleagues despite the terrific food.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMLOVED it, best for creativityLOVED it, best for creativity in my home town New Orleans. Just can't believe it has taken me so long to get there for the first time. but planning to go back in a few weeks.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMRoot ReviewGreat dining experience with very knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly staff. Recommended for an adventurous diner. We enjoyed dinner so much that we went back the next night for dessert. Unfortunately, it took over 30 minutes to get our dessert. Not sure what the problem was, but we were not happy about finishing our coffee long before dessert arrived.4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding Experience at RootOur first time in to taste Chef Lopez's progressive cuisine... and we were not disappointed. From the service to the impeccably prepared dishes, we will return and recommend to our friends. The contrasting flavors and textures were truly a taste delight. An excellent addition to the New Orleans food scene.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMRoot is a gem. The space isRoot is a gem. The space is cozy and unpretentious, and despite the bustle, not loud at all. Our service was excellent: attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. We started with the "48 hour gizzards," pickled shrimp, and duck prosciutto. The duck—mind blowing! It came with a nice accompaniment of pickles and preserved fruits. I had the pork belly—hard to go wrong there, and served with a southern flair of creamy hominy and pickled radishes. My dining partner had the scallops, which were good, but the cigar box is a bit gimmicky and overshadows the food. The sorbet was a refreshing finale, with a touch of "la gastronomie moleculaire."4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMAbsolutely fabulous!!! FromAbsolutely fabulous!!! From start to the Cracker Jack finish- exceptional!4/8/2013 12:00:00 AMCome hungry to eat good. This is a great place to enjoy wonderful food in a hip atmosphere. All the food was wonderful. I am still talking about it to others that have not tried it. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and really gave great suggestions to choose from. We went as a group of three that tried different things so that we can have more of everything. Everything is made in house, except for salt. Had the cured meats that came with pickled vegetables and fruits and strawberry mustard. You have to get the foiellypop. It is to die for! Had the Cuban sea scallops that came inside cigar box, steak frites and pork belly for entree then followed up with root beer float and lemon cake. Everything was great. Will be back for sure. Love this place!4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMMy third time at Root andMy third time at Root and the food was outstanding with similar service. While not all the dishes hit the spot the overall presentation, knowledgable staff and variety of food choices make Root the premier spot to bring large and small parties to enjoy a reasonably priced foray into the world of gastronomy. Notable dishes: get the half and half of the charcuterie and sausage board - chefs choice but request the chicken liver parfait. In all a must stop in New Orleans!4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMThis place is terrific. TheThis place is terrific. The food is inventive and beautifully flavored. There is variety in all the offerings from appetizer/charcuterie all the way to dessert. The presentation was beautiful in all the dishes. The waitstaff is knowledgeable and attentive. When chef and kitchen staff sweat the small details it really shows. For example, in our sweet corn flan there was a garnish of small green sprigs of something I didn't recognize. Popped leaf and stem into my mouth...there was a wonderful, delicate and totally unfamiliar flavor. When I asked my server what it was I found it was tangerine leaf. A tiny thing, but somebody had to think of it in the first place. I will return whenever I am in New Orleans.4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMSpeechless again and again!!This place continues to blow my mind the more I come! I still can't remember a more creative well rounded dining experience! I have eaten all over the world and this place is at the top of their game. ROOT must be on your checklist to dine when you visit New Orleans. I am from NYC, the epicenter of what new and hot in the culinary scene. If ROOT was transplanted to up here it would destroy the competition. Not giving the chef any ideas but if your looking to expand then take a bite out if the big apple PLEASE!!!!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a great time at Root,We had a great time at Root, service was knowledgable and spectacular, food was amazing, vibe was fun, scene was cool.3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMA Creative WonderWe had lunch at Root. The Charcuterie board was outstanding - we had the Porchetta. The signature beginnings dish of the Louisiana marinated shrimp and deviled eggs was outstanding. Presentations were visual wonders. The menu read like a poem with many unusual ingredients prepared in unique ways. The desserts looked so tempting, but because the servings were so generous, we could not possibly eat dessert.3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMFun. Innovative. Delicious.Fun. Innovative. Delicious. We've all ready made reservations to bring our regular Jazzfest group to eat there! Make it a point to try it yourself!3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMMust tryVery different, very good! Then they surprise you with dishes you may have not known existed, like the Aloo Gobi. The level of thought, creativity, and passion that go into each and every dish creates an eating experience like no other in this city. Great for a delicious lunch, romantic dinner, or late-night cocktails and bites - Root is an anytime delight!1/1/0001 4:00:00 PMYes, try the sausage and relish!A friend recommended this restaurant ... and she's a waitress at another restaurant, so we figured her recommendation would be good. We loved our meal at Root! We were visiting New Orleans for a week, and it was our favorite restaurant of many restaurants where we ate.
I was a little reticent to spend $9 for a "sausage" starter ... but it was well worth it ... and this turned out to be a highlight of the meal! The "sausage" came with a half dozen types of relish, each more interesting than the previous. For main courses, we ate blackened duck and sea scallops ... both were great.
My only complaint is that the waiters talked in ways that made the ambiance a bit on the pretentious side ... I prefer a more relaxed style.1/1/0001 4:00:00 PM
