  • "Overall just a great restaurant to dine at . Service is always perfect and the staff's attention to you is amazing."

  • "We went to here after the Vintner's festival last Saturday. I made a 5:30 pm reservation but we showed up 30 minutes early and were seated immediately as the restaurant was almost empty. Our waiter was nice and the ambience is fine. The food that was the problem. The soup was OK. The salad nothing special. Then came our main course, a beef brisket for 2, Horrible. Fatty and flavourless. The broccoli side was wilted and had an awful taste. We had a few bites and asked for the rest to go. I was too embarrassed to send the food back. I took it home and threw it out the next day. The smell in my refrigerator was overwhelming. I have been to this restaurant before and remember having good, although expensive, meals there. I won't be back."

  • "Had the pleasure to recently be feted at 246 for my birthday. Food excellent, ambiance romantic, staff friendly. I could not ask for a better birthday experience."

  • "Maybe it is because we chose the Sunday Special, which was prime rib (yeah, I know, what did you expect). But, I got a super dry slab of meat. We were disappointed, especially, after my nephew had reccomended this restaurant so highly. Service was 'ok' but friendly. Desert was the highlight and very good. We really wanted to like Route 246, it's cozy and quite beautiful, but not sure we would go back. There are more and more good options in the Santa Ynez area, and sadly this will not be on our list In the near future."

  • "We were on a two-day trip to Solvang and wanted to have a steak. The menu fit the bill and we made an early reservation; our mistake. The dining room was nearly empty at first but later a couple came in with a young child and they were seated at the table next to us despite there being plenty of room to spread out. Since we wanted to have a 'romantic moment' this was a bit of a downer. However, the waiter was super; very professional and the steak was absolutely great - cooked perfectly and perfectly seasoned."

  • "There were a lot of really enjoyable things about the dining experience. Plates were nicely presented, and the food was tasty. On this occasion we pushed our reservation to 30 min before closing. This resulted in menu items either not being available or substitutions recommendations that likely did not match the original intent of the dish or drink. That said, I wouldn't hesitate going back earlier in the evening with plenty of time to enjoy all offerings."

  • "I won't be ordering fish again. I don't think seafood is their specialty. We went on friday during Lent and they only had 2 items of seafood and my wife's halibut was extremely dry. At those prices I was expecting something special but the fish and chips in the bar were excellent at only $4."

  • "Was pleasantly surprised by the decor and atmosphere--upscale yet comfortable--though dining room was a little bright. Server was well versed with the wine list, attentive but laid back. Food was delicious -- sprouts were great and the brisket for two was very good. Definitely recommend."

  • "The Sunday brunch was outstanding with a large variety of food choices. My cooked to order omelet was outstanding as I chose the amount of ingredients rather than just pointing and having a cook decide how much or how little to include in my item. The indoor seating was comfortable and very private. The music was not overpowering yet I could hear each song. Even my drinks were tasty and the service perfect."

  • "We were celebrating my husbands birthday, the food and service was superb! Would recommend to everyone! The entire staff went out of their way to make his birthday a dinner to remember! Special thanks to the Chef for a wonderful dinner!"

  • "I was so excited to try this restaurant.... My friend and I drove into Solvang from LA and made dinner reservations at this restaurant. The restaurant itself is beautiful but our waiter was TERRIBLE!!!! It took forever to get anything and he hardly checked on us. The busboy checked on us more then our waiter. Then to make matters worse he completely ruined our order. We started with the brussel sprouts which were delicious. I never got my entree.. We waited 45 minutes after the appetizer and I finally had to tell him that I wanted to cancel my meal. My friend got her appetizer but we received nothing else. To get my latte I ordered also took 20 minutes. It was not that busy I just think we had a terrible waiter."

  • "We've been to this restaurant on several differect occasions over the years and it's never been as good as our visit was this time. There were so many outstanding selections on the menu, it was hard to choose. They searched a long time for this chef and it was certainly worth the wait! Both the lamb 3-ways and the pork tenderloin were tender and juicy. The portions on the salads and the main course were more than generous. The wine list is expectional, too. Their chocolate cake was to die for. We observed what people at the tables around us were ordering and heard a lot of 'yums' in the room. Their servers were friendly and knowledgable and the food was presented in a timely manner. We will return on our next visit to Solvang for sure!!!"

  • "In a city like Solvang who specializes in day trippers it is hard to find a higher scale restaurant to dine in the evening. This is it- trendy menu, excellent service and a nice fireplace outside to sit and have a relaxing moment. The best restaurant in Solvang."

  • "Fabulous food, comfortable ambiance, friendly and informative wait staff helped us enjoy our experience without being intimidating or condescending, great wines, esp enjoyed the bison appetizer and the teeny tiny tasty quail wings, I enjoyed the 3 lamb entrée, the meat was excellent, there was far more than I could eat in one sitting and it was almost as tasty warmed up the next day. I look forward to a return visit very soon."

  • "My husband and I visited Root 246 and had a wonderful time. We loved the attention to detail in the surroundings and the ambiance was relaxed, yet sophisticated. We enjoyed primo service and excellent food. We gobbled up the brussell sprouts and chorizo pizza apps, and somehow found room to finish the steelhead trout and pork shoulder. It was super good. On top of that, we enjoyed some quality beer. If you're looking for something special in your trip to Solvang, Root 246 can bring it. We're excited about this restaurant and will be recommending to friends and family in the future."

  • "This spot is a gem in the midst of some other mediocre-at-best restaurants. To my knowledge, it may be the only gourmet restaurant in town. Although the bar turned into a makeshift open mic night later, prior to dinner we enjoyed some excellent cockails with some great ambience. The food was excellent. I assume the menu changes, but I was slightly disappointed in the number of entrees - if the menu is ever-changing then it's probably just the right amount. But if they only change the dinner menu every few months or season, a wine coutnry menu coudl offer a few more choices."

  • "My boyfriend and I came in for the Artisan Burger Night. A delicious burger, hearty serving of fries, scoop of ice cream AND pint of beer (or glass of house wine) for only $19! Can't beat this deal. We will definitely be back soon...luckily we're only a 20 minute drive away."

  • "Stopped between wine tastings for brunch. Outstanding food selections, expertly prepared. Yummy French toast, made to order omelettes, impossible to resist pastries (twice), and heavenly desserts. Plus, champagne or mimosas to keep it all flowing. Amazingly good. Attentive, friendly staff."

  • "This is a really cute/elegant restaurant. There ared 4 different areas in which you can dine, so make sure you look at the website prior to making a reservation. Our waitress took me thru all of the areas and you can even eat in the Kitchen!!!....a private little table...That will be our choice next time....Our food was awesome...I had swordfish, and my husband had petite filet...everything was cooked to perfection. The deserts were awesome, and the special cocktails are yummy!!!!...Lisa was our waitress, and would ask for her again....she was very attentive, and fun....Great way to spend our 16th Anniversary!!!"

  • "We had a beautiful meal with a lobster appetizer and fillet mignon entrée for a prix fix at this lovely restaurant. The service was friendly and quick. We usually save this restaurant for special occasions and we were there for Christmas and New Years but we are thinking we should come more often."

  • "Executive chef Seth Nelson is absolutely brilliant! His food is delicious, artistic, and the most beautiful, pure representation of fresh, local, farm to table cuisine. The flavor profiles and combinations are flawless. Absolutely delightful for dinner and brunch. Highly recommend to locals and out of town food enthusiasts."

  • "Not too many upscale restaurants in the area. This place was great!"

  • "We ordered an off the menu, classic cocktail at the bar, and it was perfectly executed. Dinner was definitely fine dining, but it remained comfortable and personalized. Well prepared food, exceptional service, and the wine list is focused on local producers, but branches out enough to add variety and depth to the selections. Overall it was an impressive meal!"

  • "The menu was disappointing. The lamb had more fat than meat. The server was friendly but seemed to have too much to handle. Noise level was high. The birthday celebration we had informed you that this would be was not acknowledged in any way. Prices were too high for what we got. Will not likely return to your restaurant."

  • "Was really looking forward to dinner at Root 246 and had heard good things about it recently. But, there are better choices in the Valley for creative, quality food. The pork terrine app was okay...the side of apple and beets was almost tasteless--food shouldn't only be for show. The gourmet hamburger was large and good quality meat, but the taste profile wasn't really there and it was just a big mess to try and eat. My friend had the swordfish with lentils and the lentils were almost too salty for her to eat. Taste the food before you put it out, guys! That said, the atmosphere is great...upscale, urban feel. Service was efficient and friendly."

  • "We had a fun evening out at Root 246. They were a bit confused at the front desk, no one there to greet us and then one person showed & they gave us to another person that showed and that person gave us to another person until they finally took us to our seat Once we got seated we had a great waiter, Juan. He was very pleasant & did a great job. The food was very tasty and the ambiance is great there. Overall a fun place to go."

  • "We went there during the Restaurant Week of Santa Ynez. Fun menus for a 3 courses at $20.14, $30.14 and $40.14 with great choices and delicious food. Would go back to try their regular menu!"

  • "It's not the original concept or menu, but it's heading in a good direction."

  • "Both times my meals have been ok, but my husband's was substandard. Before, the veal was tough and we sent it back twice finally opting for the pork (also tough). My husband went for a filet and again, very tough - with a flavor similar to a filet bought at the grocery store as opposed to a high end restaurant. Although they have a very nice wine list, it's comparatively expensive. Considering they are in the middle of a decent wine producing area I would think they would make the list and pricing a bit more "user friendly." We won't be back"

  • "Over the years my husband and I have experienced plenty of prix fixe menus for many different types of occasions. This was for new year's eve and we were there with another couple. We all had different options for various courses and chose a wine paring option as well. I can honestly say that we all felt this was one of the best meals we've ever had!"

  • "Root 246 has another new chef and he is doing some fabulous things. We really enjoyed the creative dinner offerings. Their previous chefs have been hard to top, but the new menu has some very interesting new items. Dinner was a bit pricier than I was expecting, but he quality was outstanding."

  • "The outdoor dining area is lovely, with a fire and comfortable a seating. And our waiter was very pleasant. But it took 3, yes 3 attempts to cook our chateaubrand ($80.00)to medium rare. The chunky fat made up half of the steak. Stick to an appetizer and a drink and you won't be disappointed like we were."
