Diner Reviews
  • "We dined at Room 39 to celebrate two birthdays over last weekend with 3 diners never having been to Room 39 and one having been a number of years since dining there. It was very inviting; we were able to take our time to enjoy the company and celebration. The menu was great with a number of dishes being inviting making it difficult to choose. Ultimately, we were all able to dine on something we normally wouldn't order or selected a dish that intrigued us. We selected Room 39 for a number of reasons - the ambience, something out of the norm and for a large part the utilization of local product. We would most certainly recommend Room 39 to others looking for something out of the norm. "

  • "Still my favorite KC restaurant - and considering the excellent options we are so fortunate to have here in the metro, that's really saying something!!"

  • "This is an excellent restaurant. I rank the food choices the highest, with oven eggs and the chicken salad sandwich at the top of my list. Service and ambience are also very good. Will definitely go back and would highly recommend! Make a reservation - it is quaint."

  • "Great service - aware of our needs but left us to enjoy our friends company."

  • "My companion had oatmeal and was happy. I enjoyed the Oven Eggs or Baked Eggs, with the truffle oil. I've not had anything like them before and they were delicious, accompanied by a fruit salad. I like the feel of the small restaurant and I like this part of the city."

  • "Food was fabulous from pate to lemon tart and all in between! Our server was polite, knowledgeable and around just enough but did not hover. Delightful evening."

  • "Hadn't been here in a while and not sure why. We did the 39 dollar tasting menu which was a good choice--four courses consisting of salad/soup, appetizer, main course, and dessert. Try the confit or foie gras and the pork chop and opt for the lemon dessert. It was all delicious and the service was impeccable."

  • "This place never fails to provide a terrific experience. Timely, great food, and the atmosphere is charming and simply lovely. This is my spot for lunch retreats with good friends. See you soon!"

  • "Every time I dine at Room 39 I leave asking myself, 'Why don't I come here more often?' This establishment deserves to be in the discussion for best KC restaurant as its product, ambience, diverse food/drink offerings, and location are elite. The dish that blew my mind--their Ahi Tuna plate is absolutely amazing. Two days later I'm still yearning for the taste of the porcini rubbed/seared tuna, mixed with sweet potato puree, roasted mushrooms, salsa verde, and butter braised radish. We also enjoyed the vegetarian crespelle and the mixed greens salad to start. We opted for beer and enjoyed Green Flash (from San Diego) and noted they had ample adult beverage options. Great date spot with plenty of after dinner bars in walking distance!"

  • "Set a reservation on Saturday morning for brunch. When we arrived, it was completely full, with people waiting outside. We waited about 15 minutes for our table. The restaurant was bustling, so it was a little loud, but the service was friendly and the food was delicious. We both had mimosas as well. I enjoyed the Brioche French Toast and quality bacon. Potatoes were perfectly cooked."

  • "Room 39 came highly recommended and we were not disappointed! My husband and I both went with the tasting menu (which was surprisingly affordable compared to other tasting menus we've ordered) and everything was perfect. It's a pretty small restaurant which I enjoyed because it really made us feel well cared for by our server...who would also be fantastic in a larger restaurant, I'm sure! I would highly recommend Room 39."

  • "Other than the service being a little slow this place is a staple. Good food and atmosphere."

  • "Great food. Should not have table so close to the door -- it was freezing."

  • "My favorite restaurant in the KC area. Great menu with delicious and high quality food, all served up in a comfortable, low key atmosphere by a usually attentive and always interesting wait staff. I love the relaxed convivial lunch vibe and the changeover to a warm, lovely dinner setting."

  • "A friend of ours had been recommending Room 39 to us for a while and eventually got my husband and I a gift cert for a gift, so when we had a special occasion come up we tried it on a recent Fri night. Our service was excellent. Our server was knowledgeable without being pushy. We ordered the chicken liver appetizer. Delicious. I got the pork chops and my husband the tuna. He talked about it the next day. Both meals were light (which is saying something for a pork chop) and savory, fantastically done. The loaf of bread and olives they bring are a great touch. We both got cocktails and they were good. The atmosphere was quite and romantic. Overall, we had a very pleasant dinner and will add Room 39 to our "nice evening out" list."

  • "In general, I have totally enjoyed my dining experiences at Room 39. However, during a recent lunch with a colleague there was a lot left to be desired. I understand that they don't want to place a party of two at a four top, but we did have reservations and the only two top was in the center of the room so that one of us was facing a very bright window, and it was very uncomfortable. The quiche, which is usually still excellent at lunch time was over heated and tough and the noise volume in the room made conversation very difficult in that central location. I am hesitant to schedule any future lunch meetings at Room 39."

  • "We ate here on a Sat nite. We love this place & usually do the 4-course tasting menu. My companion had the kale salad, goat cheese gnocchi, steak and apple crisp dessert. Unexpectedly loved the kale salad-the vinaigrette made it. Everything was so good. I had the cauliflower soup, sweet potato ravioli, pork chop and almond bread pudding. Choc sorbet was such a treat and everything was wonderful. Our server was attentive but not intrusive and the wine list has some well-priced options. Decor is a little spartan which keeps it from feeling cozy. But it feels like some small neighborhood places i've eaten in Brooklyn or San Francisco. Focus is on the food and service and those are certainly worth the trip."

  • "My girlfriend and I ate at Room 39 (the 39th street location) for the first time on Valentine's Day and simply put it was one of the best meals I've ever had. We heard many good things about the restaurant and our high expectations were exceeded. The service was friendly and the timing was spot on. The different techniques used to prepare the food was evident and I caught myself having to slow down eating to make sure I savored every bite. The price was higher than what we are accustomed to paying, but the fine dining experience was more than worth it. We would both highly recommend Room 39. Hopefully, we will be returning to dine again sooner rather than later."

  • "Using seasonal ingredients from the region Room 39 always offer a small but selected combination of dishes that are at the same time original and flavorful. The tasting menu is the best way to enjoy the variety. A true Gem."

  • "Wow! We were first time diners to Room 39 and plan to become regulars. Brooke provided outstanding service. Food was amazing. In our group of three, we each tried something different so we could sample. Great strategy as everything I tried was perfection. We did share a dessert: almond cake. Bliss!"

  • "Recently went to try Room 39 for KC Restaurant week. I got the soup of the day and duck croquette. Both were really well done. The service was fantastic! The only downfall to this place was the noise level. If you are looking to have a conversation with the people you are with be prepared to talk as if you were in a club."

  • "My partner and I went for the lunch special during Kansas City Restaurant week. The wait for our table was no more than five minutess, service was prompt and food was great. We will go back for breakfast or lunch another day. The evening menu may be a bit pricey for us."

  • "Food is outstanding. I feel the wines are overpriced. Service was OK but it was packed because of restaurant week."

  • "Room 39 Midtown never disappoints. Their fresh wonderful food is delicious and the service is always excellent.. I love their dinner, but I am also in love with their Breakfast/Brunch offerings. In my opinion, you can never go wrong having a meal at Room 39 in Midtown."

  • "We went to Room 39 on restaurant week for lunch. It was really a nice lunch. My wife had the mixed greens & duck croquette. I had the crispy calamari & pasta bolognaise. Every bit of our food was perfect. It was all nicely plated. Fresh, hot and tasted excellent. This was our first time there and from this experience we will be coming back for sure! The restaurant was partly full and because of how small it is. I could see where you might end up with a problem with noise but that just means maybe you need to lean in and sit a little closer. We also had almond cake /w fresh berries. It was the only problem with our dinner and that was only because it took what seemed like a long time to get it. But it tasted wonderful. Room 39 is a must try."

  • "simply great. The wine guy (Sommelier?) was very knowledgeable about the wines and their origins. Food was better than the expectations after a ridiculously high recommendation. The dessert left a little to be desired. Very happy with RM39. I will go back soon."

  • "We thought we'd try a new to us restaurant for lunch during restaurant week. We really enjoyed Rm 39 in midtown. It's a neighborhood place..so small that you have to take care navigating around the room but the food and the friendly service is worth it. I would highly recommend getting a reservation as we did...every table and bar chair was occupied at 2pm. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the trout...I had the pork tacos which were good but the highlight of my meal was the sweet potato soup. I would like to go back when the weather is warmer so we can walk the neighborhood and browse the nearby shops."

  • "After ordering it took 35 mins to get our starters. Patrons seated 10-15 mins after us had their starters, and a few had their entrees. We had an appt to get to so the staff suggested we have our entrees boxed. The size of the entree in this manner was underwhelming."

  • "Amazing service. Small charming space. Food was excellent. One criticism. Most restaurants have four courses featured for restaurant week. Room 39 did not."

  • "Excellent little spot for a date. Fantastic food and deep wine list. The service was great. We were there for Restaurant Week in Kansas City, so we only saw a limited menu, but we will definitely be back for the full fare. The short ribs were excellent, as was the pork tenderloin. And, Mondays are 1/2 off wines under $50/bottle or by the glass, and with their excellent selection of both California and French wines, you have a lot to choose from. Last note -- it's an intimate place, not a lot of tables, so I highly recommend reservations."

  • "My friend and I enjoyed our overall experience, on what was an incredibly busy evening (Sat of RW) so I was willing to look past a mis-cue. As always, the service was professional and I appreciated the red and white wine pairing suggestions for the RW menu. I chose the chicken livers for a first course, and wished I had gone with the salad (my friend's choice). The portion was extremely large, the dish was oversalted (an issue that seems to crop up here) and the presentation was unappetizing to say the least. However, the entree choices of pork tenderloin and short ribs were absolutely wonderful, seasoned and prepared correctly, and lovely to look at. The ambiance is always nice, clearly groups & couples enjoying themselves."

  • "We aren't from Kansas City, but came up for the weekend, and wanted to try a new and interesting restaurant.. We found Room 39 and the reviews on Open Table, and looked forward to a great dinner. The restaurant is in a new area to us - a revitalized and energizing area near the University Hospital. Room 39 is a very cute and small restaurant, and we had a 7pm reservation and arrived about 5 minutes early - the bartender said they would get us situated in just a few minutes. It was 15 minutes until we were seated, but he was very nice and accommodating. The food was outstanding, but the service wasn't great for such a small and intimate restaurant. We'll give it a try again just to see if this was a fluke!"

  • "We have been to Room 39 several times and will go again. We don't think we had been before on a Saturday night and that made quite a difference. The food and service were excellent which is why we keep going back but the noise level was troubling, which, of course makes people talk louder with the end result that talking across the table was difficult (we are in our 70s and that may make a difference). We always recommend the restaurant and will be back but not on a Sat. night."
