Diner Reviews
  • "I've now been to ROOF four times since it opened and have tried various items on their menu. Everything is great from appetizers to dessert. The service is also really good. I highly recommend this neighborhood gem!"

  • "Menu needs some work; too expensive ($24-30) for entrees that are not 100% delish yet"

  • "Fun rooftop restaurant with delicious food. Although the tables are first come/first taken on the top floor, the view is the best in Bethesda dining. Lively bar scene on the third floor as well. Enjoyable summer dining spot."

  • "Very enjoyable dining experience. The outside looked lovely - just too hot that afternoon - especially since there were no umbrellas to provide shade."

  • "Great location with tons of potential, but no matter what you are serving, a bad waiter can ruin all the hard work that is going on behind the scenes. If this place wants to be a "go to" place for people that will spend a couple hundred on food and drinks, the customer facing employees need to be professional waiters and not fumbling, forgetful, ignorant, overwhelmed high school kids. Of course, personel decisions are a management issue, so I'm lead to believe that the place is mismanaged. I really hope they can turn this into a nice fun bar and restaurant, I would suggest hiring a manager that knows what he or she is doing. If the vision of the business doesn't change, it won't last a year with what they are selling."

  • "If you want to have an enjoyable elegant meal outdoors with great food and service, Roof fills the bill. As for ambiance, the roof area on the second floor isn't nearly as scenic as the roof on the third floor, but it offers a bit fancier of a dining experience. Diners on the top floor are dressed much more casually giving it more of the feel of a bar scene. My suggestion to management would be the addition of more plants around the perimeter of the second floor outdoor dining area (especially window boxes, etc. along the span of railing looking out onto the street). That said, the food and service were outstanding. We'll definitely return."

  • "I went to Roof for brunch and the food was delicious! Mimosas and bloody marys were also well prepared and I will definitely visit again."

  • "The first experience was so good that three days later I went back with friends. Great success."

  • "Enjoyed brunch on the terrace. Nice touch is that the menu allows choosing your meal a la carte rather than paying for things you don't want."

  • "We highly recommend Roof. We celebrated our wedding anniversary in an ambiance that is welcoming, open (glass walls overlooking the street, at the level of the crown of trees) and decorated in good taste. The menu is creative and just the right size (not too many, not too little choices)."

  • "The service was average at best. We both ordered fish fishes and were very salty (extremely salty) - We told the staff but they did not offer any remedy or comfort."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Food was fair, very unsatisfactory. Mussels had no flavor. No specials on a Thursday. Drinks were ok. Rood bar scene very loud and very expensive - $25 for two drinks. Dining room ambience was fine."

  • "There were not enough wait staff so the service was extremely slow. I would have thought that they would have offered us something to compensate for the poor service but they did not. The food was very good. It will be a shame if the restaurant does not make it because of the service."

  • "Our second time there. Food very good. Service consistently slow and inattentive. Had to repeatedly ask for not only bread, but knives and forks. Forgot pre-arranged birthday celebration request. Will not go back"
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "The French onion soup and octopus appetizer were great and will go back for those. But, the beers were small and the hamburger was sub par... should have sent it back. We'll try again ... see if there is an entree that will provoke a recommendation and stands up to the appetizers"

  • "While Roof's prices indicated that we should expect fine dining, the overall experience did not live up to this level. The food was good (Crab Cakes, Steak), but the service was very casual and they made several mistakes in a very no-nonsense order. Our entrees arrived when we had not even half finished our appetizers. This does not feel like fine dining. They did "comp" some drinks because of mistakes. We had hoped for more from this relatively new restaurant. Fairness note: we were not on the "roof." The evening was incredibly hot, so we opted to stay indoors. The roof might have a more festive or special feel."

  • "We really want to like this place as it is a good location and has a great view! The first two times the food and service were ok. Our third visit was brunch on the roof. What a mess!! Our waitress was working very hard but needed back up. We got our food but had to wait 15 minutes for the rest of it to be delivered. At that point we had eaten most of our meal... Sitting on the roof beverages are served in disposable cups. Understandable but your going to charge me each time you refill my iced tea? Had I known I would have opted for a cocktail- it would have been cheaper! We brought some of our concerns to the attention of the manager but he seemed uninterested and not helpful. We saw at least two groups come and leave. Smart folks."

  • "Lovely meal- still recommending Roof to everyone! Our party had appetizers, good drinks, fish, pork belly, and mussels! Berry trifle was good- not great."

  • "I've eaten here twice and have had a great meal both times. The service is also very good. My only comment would be that they need to address the interiors. It's such a great space but the decor is lacking a little. But I design hotels and restaurants for a living so I might be overly critical."

  • "Just got back from having dinner there. Our waiter, John F, was very professional. Food was really good. Will go again."

  • "My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time....it was our second time there and each time was better than the last....do yourself a favor and become a Roof customer...."

  • "This past weekend was my 1st time at Roof, I stumbled on to its website while looking for a dinner spot. I'm happy to say that this was one of the best finds I've had in a long time! The scene was live & energetic, the staff was courteous & professional. Needless to say the food was outstanding as well. I've already recommended this place to my friends & we're already making plans to spend another Friday night at there. If anyone has any doubts leave them at the door, I promise you will like this place as much as I did."

  • "Difficult access. Nice views. Our waiter was clueless about bar offerings. The main courses were ok. The highlight was the burrata & grilled pepper salad. The prices were high for average food."

  • "Excellent food and service for two: shrimp & grits and fish."

  • "We came with 6 of us. Our table was ready and very pleasant. Suggestion. Serve the tiny pieces of bread in a smaller shallower dish irish serve more of them. The "Cosmos"were a bit sweet and could have been colder. Will certainly be back. We gave been there before."

  • "Food was good but service was lacking. Waiter had absolutely NO personality and could not describe anything on menu. We ordered drinks. Took a long time for waiter to come back and tell me they did not have wine I ordered So I placed an order for a different wine. He brought everyone's drink but mine. Guess it took longer to pour my wine. When hostess called to confirm reservation, she asked if there was any special occasion. It was my friends birthday At dinner, no one commented on this. Why would she ask and then hardly give us a greeting? If I'm going to spend that kind of money I want more than average to good food."

  • "The 4 of us had a great meal, all different things- pork belly, shrimp and grits, scallops, ceviche, scallops, salads- all wonderful. Our waiter was fine, but it took almost an hour to get our main meal out from the kitchen. This isn't a place to go if you have movie tickets or somewhere to go in 2 hours. If they can work the kitchen out, they have a wonderful joint!"

  • "We went for dinner. Food and service were average. Very immature management and staff. Our table was near the service area right in the middle of the restaurant and we witnessed a manager loudly berating a waiter for being in the wrong section (including cussing the poor kid out for his mistake). The place is disorganized. We received our dinner before our wine came. Things just seemed to be uneven with most staff picking up for others. The roof itself is a nice atmosphere for drinks, but I wouldn't bother with dinner there again. "

  • "This is a great space. There is no question about that. The beer list was also excellent. The food was very inconsistent. My husband and son really enjoyed the shrimp and girts. They certainly were very attractively presented. My fried chicken was another story. Just dreadful. The batter was way too thick and heavy with no crunch or flavor. The meat underneath was moist but the texture was weird. The peas in the accompanying peas and carrots were very tough. The only redeeming feature was the mashed potatoes that came with the fried chicken. They were yummy."

  • "We had a lunch reservation at 1:30pm, and wanted to eat on the roof. What a disaster! The restaurant was doing construction on the Roof the entire time! Very noisy and disruptive. Great drinks, the moscow mule is not to be missed. Our waiter was horrific, I had to ask for water 3 times, and then finally got it from the bar myself. We placed our food order, and then waited. And waited. And waited. 50 minutes after we got there, I asked for a status. The waiter said he would go downstairs to the kitchen and check. HE NEVER CAME BACK! After another 15 minutes I asked the bartender. He went downstairs, came right back and said that the kitchen never got our order. At that point we left and ate at SMASHBURGER downstairs. Do NOT eat here."

  • "As a vegetarian, I eat a lot of salads out in restaurants. The choices at Roof were interesting and tasty. We sat inside since it was still chilly out. Nice to be above the traffic, but I can't say that it is particularly a scenic view. Good solid place for lunch."

  • "Although I was disappointed that the roof top deck was unavailable due to maintenance, the restaurant was a great place to dine. The food was excellent. The wine and beer options were great. We sat ouside on the terrace and throroughly enjoyed ourselves. Great neighborhood location."

  • "I have no major complaints, but the overall dining experience left us feeling flat. The service was okay but not great. We were there for a Sunday brunch (only 5 tables had patrons), and it took awhile before anyone brought water or showed up at the table. The space is fairly attractive (large windows; what appear to be reclaimed timbers on one wall), but the gray carpet was stained and very institutional looking. The carpet looks much older than the actual age of the restaurant, and it doesn't hide anything in the day time. (Hard flooring would work much better, but they'd have to figure out how to dampen excess sound.) The food tasted pretty good, but not good enough to compensate for the atmosphere."

  • "Arrived earlier than our reservation with a completely empty restaurant. However, the host told us that we needed to eat at the bar, go to the roof, or return at the time of our reservation to get a table. We asked why, because the restaurant was empty. They said there was a fire alarm, and reservations were full- even though no one had arrived yet. A few other parties without reservations filed behind us, and asked the same thing. Finally, we were all seated. We ordered the pork belly-the fruit tasted canned, the pork belly was without belly- it tasted like tough pork. The least appetizing dishes were the shrimp and grits-over salted, and the short-ribs- tender, but tasted like dry bbq ribs. Overall, disappointed and I am over Roof."

  • "From the moment we walked we were greeted with a hostess arguing with another hostess about who got to leave early that night. Two appetizers were inedible (cornmeal calamari) and one entree (steak frites) was returned. The best part about the meal was the view and the bread. "

  • "This is a great alternative in Bethesda. They did a great job with the space. Even if you sit inside the floor to ceiling windows make you feel like your outside. But the menu is very limited. There are almost no items for sharing. And out of a group of ten women nothing jumped off the menu at us. The food was all good but they really need to expand the menu. The cocktails are very inventive but the bartenders are completely inconsistent. Several of us ordered the same drink 2-3 times and each time it was completely differnt and the third time was even missing key ingredients. I will give it another chance because the ambiance is great but the food and drinks need some work. "

  • "The food was unimpressive and pricey but the service was great and the rooftop is unlike any other place in Bethesda. I would not recommend it for dinner but definitely a great happy hour spot."
