Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I went to Roof for her birthday. The ambience was great with an upbeat vibe. Unfortunately it was raining so we did not get to enjoy the outdoor space. Our waiter was attentive, very friendly and enthusiastic. Our appetizers were delicious. I had the Kale Salad and my wife had the Scallop cevice. It was not until my main course came out that I was extremely disappointed. I ordered the braised short ribs upon the recommendation of the waiter. The mashed potatoes were ice cold while the short ribs were too hot to eat and drenched in some kind of rich sauce that made it nearly impossible to eat. Overall I would give this course 1 star, but the appetizers were delicious enough to bring the entire meal up to a 3 star."

  • "Very nice meal for a decent price overall. I'll definitely go back. Looking forward to weather conducive to sitting up on the roof!"

  • "I was there for lunch the other day so too early for HH but that roof top deck will be fantastic for HH now that the weather is nicer! The food was delicious as well. Had the scallops over a cauliflower risotto."

  • "So we were curious to try this new spot, menu looked interesting as did the space but alas . . . food was pretty bland all around, looked pretty but had little taste (including mussels where the broth was like chicken stock). Best thing was a kale salad, and the service was disoriented, not just because it was new, but the waitress seemed a bit too disinterested. It was busy but needs to improve the food to keep it going, I would think. The roof space, which you see from the street, is a bar not the restaurant, and that was a bit disappointing too though the space is nice."

  • "Very pleasant Brunch experience, the food was excellent as well as the service. We will definetely go back again, perfect if you have out of town guests, price was very reasonable."

  • "Roof is in such a beautiful space. It felt relaxing to sit at the table. Then the served the food. It was amazing. I only wish they had a few more vegetarin options on the menu. The trout was amazing!!! I can't wait until it is warm enough to dine outside."

  • "This is a pleasant spot. Nice view of Bethesda street scene. Friendly service. Menu is rather conventional."

  • "First time we ate there, I liked the food. Second time was the other night...my steak was very tough, but I didn't say anything because we were eating with friends & I didn't want to deal with the tough steak -- I want to enjoy my friends. I also didn't care for the fried oysters...they were OK but I didn't like the sauce -- the sauerkraut was good, but I can't eat cabbage & the sauerkraut was sweet. The view from the dining area is of electrical wires. Good service. Like many restaurants, with 20-, 30- & 40-somethings crowding the bar, the noise level was high."

  • "food was delicious; menu interesting; dining room area spacious. Downside was very bad--almost inept --service. For example, we sat for more than five minutes before anyone came to takeour drink order than another l ongwait to take our wine orer than very long wait till the bottle of wine actually arrived; we had to find and pour our own water; there were 6 of us but meals arrived different times. Bar is hellaciously loud so ask for your table to be far from bar area if you want to hear your fellow diners."

  • "Bethesda has a lot of restaurant choices - and Roof holds its own when it comes to quality food. The second floor has a vibrant bar scene and restaurant area. My friend and I had drinks at the bar before joining four others for dinner. The service at our table was terrific. Our server Shakira was personable and professional. Neither of those adjectives can be used to describe the service we had at the bar. Having tended bar I know how hectic things can get - but if you can't take stress - don't tend bar in Bethesda on a Friday night! I would have given 4 stars on the service instead of 2 had our bar experience been a better one. Must have menu items: Brussel Sprouts and Kale Salad. I also LOVED the shrimp and grits"

  • "While I can't say anything bad about the place it, The Roof falls into the realm of your average restaurant. If you go you can at least expect good food and good service."

  • "Roof hits the sweet spot --a great neighborhood spot with excellent food, that's very fresh, with a nice atmosphere. I am looking forward to returning to the rooftop bar for a drink when the weather gets better. The Burrata appetizer was excellent and the trout was entree was very good...perhaps a little rich. I tasted the steak and fries, it was excellent. A real find in Bethesda--highly recommended."

  • "Sat outside and they didn't have propane for heaters….. Owner talked to us about it. Server was slow and a bit inattentive for water refills, etc. Food was great and good variety for everyone! Served told us a private party was coming and would be using the deck area where we were sitting. she said we could stay. Then, nasty blond, female manager stuck her head out the door…. You have to leave because there's a private party coming! Way to go with communication!!! And she was nasty! I'll go back again because the food was really good…. but I'll stay away from that manager!"

  • "I loved Roof. The dining room is comfortable with a great view of Bethesda. The food was wonderful and the drink menu was interesting. Overall this was a welcome change from many of the high priced trendy places we have been to recently. My only complaint was that our waitress was a little intrusive at times. However, this did not mar our overall experience. We were not rushed and the food came in a timely manner - not too fast or too slowly. The kale salad was excellent, the crispy octopus was crispy without being fried and the King Cod special was fantastic. The desert we had was the dark chocolate ball and it was fun with warm raspberry sauce but it was not wonderful. I would suggest trying Roof before it becomes too crowded."

  • "Too soon to make a judgment call on this restaurant.....the menu is too limited.....probably will be a good bar scene.....nice outdoor space. Trying to be a white tablecloth restaurant but not quite there!"
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "The food is top notch and very creative. Multiple servers kept an eye on drink status and promptly cleared away plates. The white tablecloths make it seem like it would be really fancy or stuffy but it's definitely not. Very friendly, helpful servers. Very welcoming. We really enjoyed the food and the whole experience. We'll be back"

  • "To my delight, my experience was quite pleasant in the dining room as our server was very attentive and went out of her way to please. My wife and I thought the food was excellent"

  • "Value for the price is missing. No menu item is "special" just fairly standard items. Atmosphere stark, but nice. Dinning with and close to vibrant bar. No need for us to rush back to the restaurant for dinner menu. We would try the bar menu if we visit again."

  • "I know this is a new restaurant but it does need to do more work to make it really work. It has great potential. The scollops ceviche was too big and a bit sloppy and the trout almondine had way too much butter. The banana parfait only had one piece of banana and some flavorless filler stuff. The setting is lovely; our waitress was lovely; the food was just so-so. The service way too fast. The appetizer came before we had about three sips of our cocktails. It night be nicer to not rush so much. I hope this review might be helpful. I really want to see this place succeed."

  • "The food was average, the service was slow at best. The flavors were good, but the portion size of the Fried Oyster Appetizer was very small...lots of cabbage on the side and the size of the oysters was as if they had cut one oyster into 1/4s before frying them. Our table also shared a steamed mussel appetizer. The size of these mussels was also very small....quite possibly the smallest mussels I have ever seen in my life. They should of been called "baby" mussels and do not compare in quality to the competition in the area that serves mussels."

  • "It is so nice to see something new in Bethesda. The food and service was excellent. I was on a date and we did not have to sream at each other to have a conversation. What a great find!"

  • "Food was wonderfully tasty and presentation was superb, but like others reviewing this restaurant on the first months of 2014, service was slow at best and our waiter was harder to find than waldo. Drinks took about 10 minutes to arrive, appetizers about the same, but our main dish took about an hour and two of them were borderline warm."

  • "We went to Roof after hearing the buzz that it was opening in Bethesda. The hostess, staff, and our waiter were very good; however the food didn't measure-up to price nor the hype. I may go there again, but with friends to hand out at the bar -- not for dinner."

  • "The Roof dining experience is very pleasurable, with even greater enjoyment coming soon with the opening of outdoor dining under the stars! Creative dishes and drinks, and a fun bar to hang out at (before or after dining)!"

  • "Great new restaurant, with a wonderful dining room and gorgeous floor to ceiling windows on two of the four walls, making for a terrific view and ambiance. Service is still ramping up, but was fine and we enjoyed our meals. We'll definitely return."

  • "Food was very good. No complaints from 4 people about food. . Noise was way too loud. We were seated too close to the bar even though we asked to be far away. Fun to have a view from the 2nd floor."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "The food was just ok. Nothing that would take me back. The service was very poor, and it was extremely load. Not a place I will return to. The view is great and I can see it being a better place when the outdoor part is open."

  • "We checked in to be told that we would need to wait 30 minutes for a table (after having made reservations through OpenTable.) We were seated in about 12-15 minutes. The bar scene was vibrant as we waited for a table. After being seated, the good character of Roof came out. The service was fantastic, even though every table was filled. The food was outstanding. Small menu, but great food, flavor and presentation."

  • "This place is wonderful right now. When it warms up outside, this place will be crazy! All in a good way! Never been here late, but the talent I saw while leaving was outstanding."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "The food was outstanding but the service was woeful. Host seemed to struggle with his computer. Gave the wrong set of menus to the seating hostess which caused us to have to make two different sets of menu selections. Initial drink order took 20 minutes to arrive (whereas follow up drinks arrived very quickly). Food came out 30 minutes after ordering. French onion soup was outstanding as was their beet salad. Scallops were also perfectly cooked. Once restaurant works out the service kinks, this place will be the most talked about in town."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "This restaurant won't make it another 5 weeks if they don't work out the service kinks quickly! We sat for 30 minutes before a waiter came to our table. Food wasn't good enough for hype to last without a serious service overhaul!"

  • "We were seated at the windows overlooking the street - lovely job with windows and white lighting. The food was terrific but service was in need of refinement. The servers had trouble figuring out who got which entree. Further, our water was not refilled throughout our meal nor was I asked if I wanted another glass of wine with my entree. I also have a problem with servers removing dishes when people are still eating. Our water glasses were also cleared from the table with the dessert plates. It makes you feel like the restaurant is trying to turn the tables which is unlikely at 10:00pm. The food was delicious and we were all impressed with the quality and plating.Hopefully as the restaurant "matures" the wait staff will learn and improve."

  • "Roof has the potential to be a really fine restaurant. The food is very good and service fine. Nice atmosphere overlooking the street. My issue is not the quality of the food, but the very limited menu. What we had was tasty and very nicely presented. But there is not even a poultry entree, and the only find his farm raised trout. Only four deserts, though what we had was very good and imaginative."

  • "This place just opened for Sunday brunch but not many people know about it yet. I had shrimp and grits and my friend had the french toast. Both of us were very happy with our choices and the ambiance is quite nice as well. I'm looking forward to warmer weather when we can sit out on the terrace. We intend on returning with a larger crowd in a couple of weeks."
