  • "I've been here before but my boyfriend hasn't so we went for his birthday. Good food, sat with an interesting group of gentleman. Drink service was really slow"

  • "I have been going to this restaurant for years and it never disappoints. The salad dressing and the shrimp topping are both the best! We learned a new one tonight and that was to just order the salad and order two portions of the appetizer shrimp. We have always ordered the Crown dinners because of the amount of food, but if you just need a fix of the shrimp, the appetizers would be perfect. Service is always good and a great mix of specialty drinks are available too."

  • "Server was horribly rude and the chef making our food did nothing to make the process fun/entertaining, he just cooked and looked bored. Disappointing all around."

  • "First the hostess couldn't find my reservation. I haven't been here for awhile and I thought the prices were on the high side for what you got. You paid extra for the fried rice and it didn't have much in it. The best part was the shrimp that was very tasty. I don't think I'll be back."

  • "My family has been coming here for birthdays since I was little. It is great for big groups, but keep in mind that they sit multiple parties at one table. If you are not social, or comfortable sitting with strangers, this is not the place for you…However when I went for my mom's birthday, in the past, she got along so well with our table mates, she left with the woman to see a movie after dinner! The most recent time I went, I sat at the bar waiting for the rest of my party to come. The bartender made a flight of their signature cocktails before I even ordered a drink! (No charge) My dad ordered a draft beer and when our table was called, the bartender refilled his beer without charge. You will leave full, portions are huge, but delicious!"

  • "The place is like a 1978 time warp but the kitschy-ness is fun as long as you know what you're in for. I brought a group of business associates from out of town & it's perfect for a big group. The portions are quite large and food is good quality. Be warned though that you are often sat with strangers. The poor high school couple sitting at our table was mortified..."

  • "The food was good, but not great. It was overpriced for the quality and quantity. The worst part is being crammed into an undersized table and spending the entire meal with the cook's armpit in your face and having to repeatedly dodge his elbow as it whips across your plate. At these prices, surely Ron can spare some bigger tables."

  • "Ron of Japan never ceases to amaze us! The food, drinks and overall ambience was terrific! We love and always look forward to our evening here! We brought friends this time around (they hadn't been here in many years) and they are still raving!"

  • "I made reservations for 6 for a Birthday and while the food was good, the overall experience was sadly VERY disappointing. It's a very large colorful restaurant, which is why I chose it even though it's much further from our home than two different Benihana restaurants. Even though we had made reservations, AND the restaurant had numerous open tables (beautiful booths by the windows and trickling ponds etc.) we were escorted past these tables to a small back room which looked more like a back bar room, with extra chairs stacked up next to our table. The ventilation was poor, the room was hot and stuffy, and as we left (2 hrs later) we noticed at least 4 or more of the "pretty" area booths were STILL open. Sad and expensive evening."

  • "Have been going to Ron of Japan for years. While the new management has made some nice changes to the physical restaurant, they continue to be far less customer-friendly than the old management. My wife and I who both have birthdays in July and both signed up for the Birthday Club (via email) continue to receive only a single email on her birthday. We have asked and repeatedly signed up, yet only one coupon arrives. When we approached management this week to celebrate both of our birthdays there with a large group, they refused to even look at my license as proof of my birthday, nor would they verify that they had my name on their Birthday Club sign up. The food continues to be good, but just don't expect customer-centricity."

  • "It has been several years since we last dined here. The food was not at all like we remember. Used to be so very good so we were very dissapointed with our recent experience. The beef fried rice had too much ground beef in it and the chicken was very overcooked and dry. Had to wait an extremely long time to have drinks refilled. The chef was very nice but did not put on any kind of show while preparing the meal and he was rather slow. For the price that was paid i would not recommend going to this location."

  • "This place has been around for as long as I can remember. Whoever owns the place now has figured out how to polish a neighborhood gem and make it even better. Egg sauce is the same but the quality of food, service and drinks have improved over the last few years, the owners seem to be striving to make this place a head and shoulder above the rest best in their class of restaurants. Go and have a fun time"

  • "Overall Ron of Japan has never failed on food quality; nothing remarkable about their service, nothing or no one really stands out. We had to tell the receptionist twice that we are here to be seated. I think this restaurant has been around for way too long, guests will come as a tradition for something different even if it's a little pricey, and as a result the service can be taken for granted, I.e. When the ice cream was served they were melted and dripping all over the cup onto the table and this did not bother the server one bit. It bothered all the guests who got the ice cream because we didn't know how to deal with all the mess right in front of us. It doesn't matter whether it's a pricey restaurant or not."

  • "We were seated in the back room, corner and the seating temperature was very uneven, part of our group was very hot and those sitting near the cooling vents were fine. The food was good, but nothing special and the chef as adequate, without too much personality."

  • "If you get those, you'll be in heaven. Plus the fried rice... Steak is tender, juicy, but not flavorful."

  • "We came on time after reserved online reservation, the table was not ready for at least 15 min , the host couldn't pronounce our last name or the first name (that are simple to). A host Accompanied us to a table of 4 as the reservation was for a party of 6, now we got to wait longer. 10 more minutes of wait we got to seat behind a table but got a little out of patient and headed to leave the restaurant and try to look for another one. suddenly appeared a nice man that stopped me and asked why we are leaving? appears that he was the owner, he saved our day with his kindness and we stayed for our dinner."

  • "Ron of Japan is my favorite place for Japanese Tappanyaki dining. Their egg sauce is by far the best anywhere. The steak is always cooked to perfection and their fried rice is addictive. Best of all, it's family dining and kid friendly. Highly recommended and never disappointed!"

  • "Took my father here for Father's Day and didn't enjoy my meal at all. The food was very bland and very overpriced. We didn't get all the bells and whistles of a good show either. They sort of cooked the food and that was it. Pretty quiet and boring for my taste. Service was very slow also. 4:30 reservation and didn't get to eat until around 6. It was incredibly warm in the room also. Left feeling a little "clammy". My father enjoyed himself but he's over 70 and just happy to spend time out with his children. He smiled the entire time. My brother and I, however, left underwhelmed and hungry. Benihanas would have been a much better choice for this type of meal. Others may love it but I won't be back."

  • "This restaurant is close to I94 and has parking available. We arrived for early for our 7:30 reservation and waited in the bar area. It was comfortable and dimly lit. We were able to watch the Blackhawks playoff game until the rest of our party arrived. The beer selection is basic, but that was not why we came. The hostess seated us once everyone arrived and we were greeted warmly by our chef for the evening. The food was prepared well and the steaks we ordered were cooked to each of our specifications. I would return."

  • "Just got back in town from 4 months in Florida! Party of 6 straight to Rons (it was my nephew's birthday). The food is consistently outstanding. Tonight was no different. It's not on the menu but ask for the tofu appetizer. Delicious! I had shrimp and steak. Perfect grilled fillet, --the egg sauce is addictive. Wife had chicken and shrimp. The best chicken. It's tender, grilled, but cooked through. The birthday boy ordered SHOGUN. Fillet and Lobster tail with egg sauce. I definitely commandeered a few bites. They now have Sapporo on draft. Fresh crisp cold, --(love tap beer and I love Sapporo). Wife and sis in law had Super Mai Tais! They have really upgraded the environ. All new decor, bar, bathrooms! Ron's is outstanding!"

  • "We had a great time... We go here every year for my hubby's birthday. This year was different. Food was okay. Usually it's fabulous but this year, just okay. What's missing in the menu are Japanese noodle dishes. That would make it more kid friendly. Waitress was not that good. Usually we only had to say it once that it was my hubby's birthday but had to say it 3 different times. Also had to keep finding a waitress to take our drink order. Sub par service and it wasn't even peak hours for dinner. Came early at 5:15pm on a Sunday. "

  • "We have been coming here for years and the food is great. There is a lot of courses, however I have noticed the portions over the past year have gotten smaller. I do like to new dessert options. The waitress was terrible and slow. We had to ask all the time for water and we sat there for twenty minutes before we got the soup and another 15 for the salad. We sat a long time with out getting any food. We had to keep asking for her and got attitude when she did come over. The cook and the food were great!"

  • "We have always come to Ron of Japan for special occasions or when the children were young. The service is not as good nor is the atmosphere. It does not seem like a Japanese restaurant. Not like it used to. The portions are not as large either, although they are still very adequate. The children at our table were very happy with everything but since we knew how the restaurant used to be we were not. The food was still very good."

  • "Placed at a table with two three year old that did everything except eating. Not what you expect. Maybe a Sunday night is the children's party night, but this was not what we expected."

  • "On Monday evening, I dined at Ron of Japan and was very disappointed in our seating arrangement. I have been to other hibachi restaurants before, so I understand that you sometimes sit with other parties besides your own. Monday night, I was with a party of 5 and we were sat with another party of 4. The tables at Ron of Japan are a lot smaller than other hibachi restaurants, so my party and the other party were sitting right on top of one another. It made for a very uncomfortable dining experience and ruined my time at Ron of Japan. That arrangement is fine low cost fast food meal, but our bill was a lot higher than that."

  • "We had a group of 6 for dinner on a Saturday night and got a booth set-up. It was nice and not too cozy/crowded. The food was delicious and plentiful. No exciting knife tricks or entertainment by the chef, which was a bit disappointing and the place shuts down pretty early so you'll need to head elsewhere for post-dinner drinks! Overall, good meal and good service. "

  • "We had a friend celebrating a birthday, so we decided to take her to Rons. Great Choice! Mai Tais and Martinis and the bar, and we transferred them over to the table for a great party. The food? Fantastic? Itaya (I know I'm not spelling his name right) was the chef and he is the best. Makes a perfect filet. The birthday girl ordered Shogun (why not, --it's her birthday!). She shared the lobster with that special sauce and we were all in heaven! Seriously, I would eat that every day if I could. Fried rice is the best! They even have great sushi. Fresh!"
