  • "It has been several years since we last dined here. The food was not at all like we remember. Used to be so very good so we were very dissapointed with our recent experience. The beef fried rice had too much ground beef in it and the chicken was very overcooked and dry. Had to wait an extremely long time to have drinks refilled. The chef was very nice but did not put on any kind of show while preparing the meal and he was rather slow. For the price that was paid i would not recommend going to this location."

  • "This place has been around for as long as I can remember. Whoever owns the place now has figured out how to polish a neighborhood gem and make it even better. Egg sauce is the same but the quality of food, service and drinks have improved over the last few years, the owners seem to be striving to make this place a head and shoulder above the rest best in their class of restaurants. Go and have a fun time"

  • "We were seated in the back room, corner and the seating temperature was very uneven, part of our group was very hot and those sitting near the cooling vents were fine. The food was good, but nothing special and the chef as adequate, without too much personality."

  • "Over priced, not very flavorful. Used to be much better. Waiter terrific, chef ok, table busser horrible."

  • "Took my father here for Father's Day and didn't enjoy my meal at all. The food was very bland and very overpriced. We didn't get all the bells and whistles of a good show either. They sort of cooked the food and that was it. Pretty quiet and boring for my taste. Service was very slow also. 4:30 reservation and didn't get to eat until around 6. It was incredibly warm in the room also. Left feeling a little "clammy". My father enjoyed himself but he's over 70 and just happy to spend time out with his children. He smiled the entire time. My brother and I, however, left underwhelmed and hungry. Benihanas would have been a much better choice for this type of meal. Others may love it but I won't be back."

  • "Overall Ron of Japan has never failed on food quality; nothing remarkable about their service, nothing or no one really stands out. We had to tell the receptionist twice that we are here to be seated. I think this restaurant has been around for way too long, guests will come as a tradition for something different even if it's a little pricey, and as a result the service can be taken for granted, I.e. When the ice cream was served they were melted and dripping all over the cup onto the table and this did not bother the server one bit. It bothered all the guests who got the ice cream because we didn't know how to deal with all the mess right in front of us. It doesn't matter whether it's a pricey restaurant or not."

  • "We came on time after reserved online reservation, the table was not ready for at least 15 min , the host couldn't pronounce our last name or the first name (that are simple to). A host Accompanied us to a table of 4 as the reservation was for a party of 6, now we got to wait longer. 10 more minutes of wait we got to seat behind a table but got a little out of patient and headed to leave the restaurant and try to look for another one. suddenly appeared a nice man that stopped me and asked why we are leaving? appears that he was the owner, he saved our day with his kindness and we stayed for our dinner."

  • "If you get those, you'll be in heaven. Plus the fried rice... Steak is tender, juicy, but not flavorful."

  • "Ron of Japan is my favorite place for Japanese Tappanyaki dining. Their egg sauce is by far the best anywhere. The steak is always cooked to perfection and their fried rice is addictive. Best of all, it's family dining and kid friendly. Highly recommended and never disappointed!"

  • "This restaurant is close to I94 and has parking available. We arrived for early for our 7:30 reservation and waited in the bar area. It was comfortable and dimly lit. We were able to watch the Blackhawks playoff game until the rest of our party arrived. The beer selection is basic, but that was not why we came. The hostess seated us once everyone arrived and we were greeted warmly by our chef for the evening. The food was prepared well and the steaks we ordered were cooked to each of our specifications. I would return."

  • "Just got back in town from 4 months in Florida! Party of 6 straight to Rons (it was my nephew's birthday). The food is consistently outstanding. Tonight was no different. It's not on the menu but ask for the tofu appetizer. Delicious! I had shrimp and steak. Perfect grilled fillet, --the egg sauce is addictive. Wife had chicken and shrimp. The best chicken. It's tender, grilled, but cooked through. The birthday boy ordered SHOGUN. Fillet and Lobster tail with egg sauce. I definitely commandeered a few bites. They now have Sapporo on draft. Fresh crisp cold, --(love tap beer and I love Sapporo). Wife and sis in law had Super Mai Tais! They have really upgraded the environ. All new decor, bar, bathrooms! Ron's is outstanding!"

  • "We had a great time... We go here every year for my hubby's birthday. This year was different. Food was okay. Usually it's fabulous but this year, just okay. What's missing in the menu are Japanese noodle dishes. That would make it more kid friendly. Waitress was not that good. Usually we only had to say it once that it was my hubby's birthday but had to say it 3 different times. Also had to keep finding a waitress to take our drink order. Sub par service and it wasn't even peak hours for dinner. Came early at 5:15pm on a Sunday. "

  • "We have been coming here for years and the food is great. There is a lot of courses, however I have noticed the portions over the past year have gotten smaller. I do like to new dessert options. The waitress was terrible and slow. We had to ask all the time for water and we sat there for twenty minutes before we got the soup and another 15 for the salad. We sat a long time with out getting any food. We had to keep asking for her and got attitude when she did come over. The cook and the food were great!"

  • "We have always come to Ron of Japan for special occasions or when the children were young. The service is not as good nor is the atmosphere. It does not seem like a Japanese restaurant. Not like it used to. The portions are not as large either, although they are still very adequate. The children at our table were very happy with everything but since we knew how the restaurant used to be we were not. The food was still very good."

  • "Placed at a table with two three year old that did everything except eating. Not what you expect. Maybe a Sunday night is the children's party night, but this was not what we expected."

  • "On Monday evening, I dined at Ron of Japan and was very disappointed in our seating arrangement. I have been to other hibachi restaurants before, so I understand that you sometimes sit with other parties besides your own. Monday night, I was with a party of 5 and we were sat with another party of 4. The tables at Ron of Japan are a lot smaller than other hibachi restaurants, so my party and the other party were sitting right on top of one another. It made for a very uncomfortable dining experience and ruined my time at Ron of Japan. That arrangement is fine low cost fast food meal, but our bill was a lot higher than that."

  • "We had a group of 6 for dinner on a Saturday night and got a booth set-up. It was nice and not too cozy/crowded. The food was delicious and plentiful. No exciting knife tricks or entertainment by the chef, which was a bit disappointing and the place shuts down pretty early so you'll need to head elsewhere for post-dinner drinks! Overall, good meal and good service. "

  • "We had a friend celebrating a birthday, so we decided to take her to Rons. Great Choice! Mai Tais and Martinis and the bar, and we transferred them over to the table for a great party. The food? Fantastic? Itaya (I know I'm not spelling his name right) was the chef and he is the best. Makes a perfect filet. The birthday girl ordered Shogun (why not, --it's her birthday!). She shared the lobster with that special sauce and we were all in heaven! Seriously, I would eat that every day if I could. Fried rice is the best! They even have great sushi. Fresh!"

  • "I have been going to Ron for 25 years and the restaurant changed hands a few years back. The first year or so was rough. Bad service, no respect for reservation times, uneven quality of the food. It seems that they are working out the kinks. Since my last visit, walls have been brightened up and the menus (with price increases, of course) are new. I had filet, chicken and shrimp (sharing with my wife). All were very tasty. The soup is consistently good. Salad was good and luckily it seems that they are no longer skimping and provided the proper amount of their excellent dressing. Egg sauce and fried rice are consistently good. Previous meals the steak and chicken, in particular, have been inconsistent in quality and taste. Jury is still out"

  • "Our party of 8 went to celebrate a birthday. Mentioned it twice & it was never acknowledged. The food was tasteless. Chicken was terrible, fried rice was bitter & soup was just hot water. The filet mignon was good. Emailed the restaurant & received a call saying he was sorry & offered a $ 60 credit for future dining. I spent close to $500 for our meal & told him we would never be back & would notify our friends about our experience there."

  • "I recently brought my twin daughters in for a surprise Sweet 16 Birthday dinner with a few friends. A great time was had by all. Our server was attentive and gracious; the gentleman who cooked for us could not have been nicer. We were a table of 9 -- 8 teenage girls and me. The girls were a little rowdy at times with photos and laughing, and everyone on the staff didn't even bat an eye. I brought in 2 cakes which were taken from me upon arrival to refrigerate. When it came time to have cake, they brought them out, sang a traditional Japanese birthday song with celebratory sparklers and all. My daughters and their friends had a really fun experience. The restaurant is a little pricey but a good alternative to other large party experiences."

  • "Waitress was RUDE-you shouldn't charge $10 minimum for children-my kids barely eat. Table should not be cleaned and cleared while people are still eating. I don't need to explain to you why my kids are not eating so don't ask! The cooks are awesome so nothing bad to say there-BUT the waitstaff needs a lesson in manners."

  • "ROJ never fails to impress. The food was great as usual and service with a smile is what you get. Loved the Sho Gun dinner. The lobster was fresh and was cooked to perfection! Don't be afraid to say "No thanks" to the egg sauce and enjoy the food on it's own! Although, the egg sauce is original to Ron Of Japan. (As far as I know)"

  • "Hubby's bday dinner and as always we had a very good time. Moved away from area so it was first time back in a while-- food (& Eggsauce!) was just as good as I remembered. I also noticed that they have done some much needed updates over the past year-- bravo Ron of Japan! Happy to see a restaurant that has been around so long continue to thrive! Looking forward to our next visit."

  • "We had 3 families (6 adults and 7 children), had to be split up as they can not seat parties this large at one table. We put kids at a table next to us but for some reason we had seperate servers which meant seperate checks for kids...good thing they brought their wallets...and food coming at different times. Also odd that adult meals come with desert (fruit, ice cream or sherbet) but kids meals do not. These minor inconveniences were no match for the great food and fun we all had. It's a little pricey but there is so much food you can't eat it all. Almost everyone got the crown dinner of some variety and clogged our arteries with that delicious egg sauce (how do they make that?). Don't forget the super Mai Tai. Great job as always ROJ!"

  • "We were very disappointed with our meal - the food was bland and overcooked. I was the only at the table who had chicken, which was ok (and I mean, just ok). The rest of our party (5 others) had the sukiyaki steak, which was tough and tasteless. I can't recommend this restaurant to anyone. For the prices they charge, I really expected much more. Sad."
