  • "The service, food, and presentation were poor compared to other teppanyaki restaurants we have been too. I would not go back."

  • "We had a friend celebrating a birthday, so we decided to take her to Rons. Great Choice! Mai Tais and Martinis and the bar, and we transferred them over to the table for a great party. The food? Fantastic? Itaya (I know I'm not spelling his name right) was the chef and he is the best. Makes a perfect filet. The birthday girl ordered Shogun (why not, --it's her birthday!). She shared the lobster with that special sauce and we were all in heaven! Seriously, I would eat that every day if I could. Fried rice is the best! They even have great sushi. Fresh!"

  • "The food here was terrible. Even the worst cook can pour soy sauce on vegetables and meat, and toss, and serve. I can't believe I paid over $30pp for this awful meal."

  • "I have been going to Ron for 25 years and the restaurant changed hands a few years back. The first year or so was rough. Bad service, no respect for reservation times, uneven quality of the food. It seems that they are working out the kinks. Since my last visit, walls have been brightened up and the menus (with price increases, of course) are new. I had filet, chicken and shrimp (sharing with my wife). All were very tasty. The soup is consistently good. Salad was good and luckily it seems that they are no longer skimping and provided the proper amount of their excellent dressing. Egg sauce and fried rice are consistently good. Previous meals the steak and chicken, in particular, have been inconsistent in quality and taste. Jury is still out"

  • "Our party of 8 went to celebrate a birthday. Mentioned it twice & it was never acknowledged. The food was tasteless. Chicken was terrible, fried rice was bitter & soup was just hot water. The filet mignon was good. Emailed the restaurant & received a call saying he was sorry & offered a $ 60 credit for future dining. I spent close to $500 for our meal & told him we would never be back & would notify our friends about our experience there."

  • "I recently brought my twin daughters in for a surprise Sweet 16 Birthday dinner with a few friends. A great time was had by all. Our server was attentive and gracious; the gentleman who cooked for us could not have been nicer. We were a table of 9 -- 8 teenage girls and me. The girls were a little rowdy at times with photos and laughing, and everyone on the staff didn't even bat an eye. I brought in 2 cakes which were taken from me upon arrival to refrigerate. When it came time to have cake, they brought them out, sang a traditional Japanese birthday song with celebratory sparklers and all. My daughters and their friends had a really fun experience. The restaurant is a little pricey but a good alternative to other large party experiences."

  • "Waitress was RUDE-you shouldn't charge $10 minimum for children-my kids barely eat. Table should not be cleaned and cleared while people are still eating. I don't need to explain to you why my kids are not eating so don't ask! The cooks are awesome so nothing bad to say there-BUT the waitstaff needs a lesson in manners."

  • "ROJ never fails to impress. The food was great as usual and service with a smile is what you get. Loved the Sho Gun dinner. The lobster was fresh and was cooked to perfection! Don't be afraid to say "No thanks" to the egg sauce and enjoy the food on it's own! Although, the egg sauce is original to Ron Of Japan. (As far as I know)"

  • "Hubby's bday dinner and as always we had a very good time. Moved away from area so it was first time back in a while-- food (& Eggsauce!) was just as good as I remembered. I also noticed that they have done some much needed updates over the past year-- bravo Ron of Japan! Happy to see a restaurant that has been around so long continue to thrive! Looking forward to our next visit."

  • "We had 3 families (6 adults and 7 children), had to be split up as they can not seat parties this large at one table. We put kids at a table next to us but for some reason we had seperate servers which meant seperate checks for kids...good thing they brought their wallets...and food coming at different times. Also odd that adult meals come with desert (fruit, ice cream or sherbet) but kids meals do not. These minor inconveniences were no match for the great food and fun we all had. It's a little pricey but there is so much food you can't eat it all. Almost everyone got the crown dinner of some variety and clogged our arteries with that delicious egg sauce (how do they make that?). Don't forget the super Mai Tai. Great job as always ROJ!"

  • "We were very disappointed with our meal - the food was bland and overcooked. I was the only at the table who had chicken, which was ok (and I mean, just ok). The rest of our party (5 others) had the sukiyaki steak, which was tough and tasteless. I can't recommend this restaurant to anyone. For the prices they charge, I really expected much more. Sad."

  • "I would recommend Ron of Japan for birthday parties for 12-13 year olds. That is where we ended up after making a reservation for 9. There were 4 tables in our room and 3 of the tables had screaming pre-teens for 3/4 of the time we were there. Our reservation was 6:15 pm and although we had a 2 and 3 year old, they sat in their seats quietly, unlike the others. Why would Ron of Japan allow an actual private party in the same room with people who come and pay a hefty price to dine? We could not hear each other speak. The food was good, thank goodness but our family left feeling frustrated and smelled very smokey (ventilation is not good). Unfortunately, we will not be returning any time soon."

  • "Ambience is special. Service was slow. Were very accommodating for grandkids. We usually enjoy the shrimp topped with egg/mayo but main courses are bland and oily. Only go because our adult daughter loves it!"

  • "Was taken here for my holiday party and my boyfriend and I loved it! To go on valentines day was great but I wish some people would've had a section for the family's and other for the adults. It was fun over all the food was fantastic and we will be going back for sure!!"

  • "We've been coming here for 30 years and this was the worst experience ever. We were say with a group of hipster kids. The waitress was awful and assumed that we were their chaperone. Ron of Japan got tricky and jacked up their menu prices while taking half of the options off the menu. Our cook was excellent and the food was great. When the checks came our server assumed that I was paying for the 8 random strangers at our table. I explained that we had never met them and hardly talked to them, as they were incredibly awkward. Once I paid the bill the server grabbed the check from me and while standing in front of me read the tip. Not cool."

  • "The reason to go to a Japanese Steak house is not only for the food, it is to be entertained as they make your food. This is why I don't mind paying more, because each experience has something different than the last. My family enjoys going to a Japanese Steak house a 3-4 times a year. We brought my daughters boyfriend who is from a small town in central Illinois for what we thought was the true experience. Growing up not far from Ron of Japan, I figured they would be perfect since they have been there forever. I was so wrong. Veggies were precut, meaning no onion volcano etc... No knife handling, flipping food or even interacting with the table members. Other tables asked about the volcano and their response was"we don't do that here"."

  • "Ron of Japan attracts diners of all kinds -- couples celebrating special occasions, family gatherings, and big groups. It's very lively inside, but also chaotic. The air quality is abysmal due to the number of teppanyaki grills, but it's part of the ambiance, I guess. The fan above our grill wasn't working properly, and one of the diners at our table was in a cloud of smoke the entire meal. It's also very loud, so if you're looking for a quiet dinner, go elsewhere. Despite our reservation, we waited 30 min to be seated on a Saturday night with a 6pm reservation. We saw lots of kids getting restless with similar waits. Food quality is good, and prices are steep."

  • "The restaurant squeezed our party of twelve into one round table instead of two smaller ones. We could not pull our chairs close enough to make it easy to reach everything and eat. They should have given us the option of splitting up and sitting at two smaller tables."

  • "Chefs lack enthusiasm with no real care or concern for presentation from the act of cooking to the Tupperware used to bring out the food!"

  • "We have enjoyed this restaurant for a few fun, family outings because we can all sit together, see and hear one another, and the food is good and plentiful. It can get a little hot and smoky from the cooking that happens right in front of everyone, so I advise to dress comfortably and wear clothes you don't mind tossing immediately into the wash, as the cooking smells go home with you. Aside from that inconvenience, it's a fun and tasty night out. Very friendly service staff."

  • "We ordered medium rare steak and many of us got medium well. We had told the restaurant when we made the reservation that we were celebrating birthdays, but the server had no idea. Fried rice was too salty. Cook seemed bored. Just not the experience that we have had in the past many times at Ron of Japan."

  • "The moment you step into the restaurant, it smells of old oil. The whole restaurant looked dingy and needed to be aired out and deep cleaned. We had a 6:30 pm reservation for 10 people. We checked in at 6:30 stating the whole party was there. Checked at 6:40, hostess said she didn't know our whole party was there, said table was being set up. 6:50 they said 2 minutes. We were seated at 7:00. What is the point of making a reservation? The person that cooked for us was great and we were surprised that the food was actually good, except for the chicken soup. The egg sauce that everyone raves about was kind of gross, just tasted like pure fat. Although the food was good, I would not recommend or return to this restaurant."

  • "I love Tepanyaki and I have traveled all over the world and have seen some great places. ron of Japan was wonderful. I took my grandchildren for New Years eve and they enjoyed it very much . It was a horrible evening with so much snow but inside was warm and cozy and we shared the table with a lovely 4 some."

  • "The restaurant is really nice, but the food was not that great. Shrimp with egg sauce is good. Hibachi chicken and shrimp had no seasoning and was really bland. Considering the price, I'd recommend trying another restaurant."

  • "I am a huge fan! The atmosphere is unique and fun. Perfect for large groups, a romantic date, fun with friends or special occasions. I've been a customer for a while but noticed a huge boost in overall service and food quality in the past year or so. I'm not sure if there has been a shift in servers or managers, but definitely noticeable. The added bonus was the valet service too. They are super nice and quick, not your typical valet service that barely looks you in the eye. I've been at Ron of Japan's Northbrook location several times in the last 6 months and have not been disappointed, always consistently wonderful. Nice job!"

  • "We had a great time and a fun table. Our chef was amazing and accomodated our many requests for more egg sauce. My only complaint is they changed the green tea ice cream, but by that time I was so full that it didn't make a difference. Excellent meal."
