  • "I recently went to Ron of Japan and was overly satisfied! I was a bit skeptical from reading some of these negative reviews but am so happy that i went! From the moment I went into the front door, they were attentive and accommodating to my needs. From there, it just got better. Once sat down, the waiter promptly came to take our drink order and the chef was a pleasure to be around..let alone he was an amazing cook who seasoned things in ways I have never had! The lobster is a good 10inch tail and delicious with their amazing egg yolk sauce. It wasn't an accident as to why the benihana in chicago went out of business, my opinion it was because it couldn't compete with Ron's! I would recommend this place to anyone!"

  • "The quality of the ingredients was good but it had no flavor and everything was very dry. The sauces were terrible."

  • "Made reservation but kept waiting for 55min after reservation time. We informed restaurant it was a birthday via online and in person, however it was completely forgotten about. We felt bad for the birthday boy when all these other tables were getting a celebration we were just given the check at the end of the meal. The "show" aspect at our table never happened...just cooked food. No interaction and no "big fire flames" or "tower of onion". Again we watched that happen at other tables. Unfortunately we were seated with an obnoxious lady who kept loudly complaining...not sure if she ruined the show for us, or if our table just was the forgotten table. Generally this is a fun place for a celebration, but this time around it was not."

  • "Smaller tables than most Tappan style restaurants works well. Food was excellent.. Beef was fantastic along with scallops."

  • "The service was very slow and staff, especially the cook had no enthusiasm, in addition, food was bland with no spice.. North side Chicago folks obviously have no interest with Hibachi style food service, and this low energy is definitely reflective by the staff."

  • "As someone who recommends restaurants to tourists as part of my job description, I understand that there are two very important elements when it comes to dining and service. They need to be good. You need them both to be on a higher level, there is just too much competition for a restaurant to have as poor service and food quality as this restaurant. I was beyond disappointed, and will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone."

  • "This was a complete disappointment. The food was average at best, The back room they sat us in had background music that was too loud, it was extremely smokey and the cooking staff was not energetic at all. Every other teppanyaki restaurant we have ever been too puts on a show as part of the meal, our meal could have just as easily been cooked in the kitchen and brought to our table. I will order carry-out before going back to Ron of Japan.."

  • "This was our first time visiting this restaurant. We have always heard great things about it. I understand why its always cr. This place is AMAZING!!! The only downside was the wait but it was the day after valentines day so I get it. We had a reservation at 9:30pm and didn't get seated until almost 10:30. Otherwise, everything was AWESOME!!!!"

  • "This is by far my favorite restaurant. I love tepenyaki and seafood so Ron covers my favorites. The new managment is great. I have been going to Ron for years and this is probably the best thing they have done. Employees are all friendly and the restaurant appears cleaner."

  • "Perhaps kitsch, but I still like this place. The shrimp with egg yolk sauce is what separates this from places like Benihana. Overall, a fun place that I'd confidently recommend."

  • "We usually try to get to Ron's at least once a year for a family get-together. (It's a two-hour drive from Indiana.) All three kids grew up going there, and always look forward to returning for the lobster. My sirloin was good, but the scallops were pretty ordinary and rubbery, a big disappointment. The rest of the table opted, as always, for the lobster with egg sauce. (I'm just not a big seafood kinda guy.) You won't see any food or cutlery flying around the table, but that's the way I prefer it. The fried rice and grilled vegetables are always good, but I'd pass on the green tea ice cream, based on what my wife said. Go with the pineapple or sherbert for dessert."

  • "We ate here on a Friday night and it wasn't too busy, all tables filled but not many waiting to be seated. Once we got seated it took probably about 20 minutes before the server even came over. Once our server was at the table was unprepared and had to leave and come back. We received our soup and salad pretty timely. Our chef was not very interactive and Didnt do any knife tricks. Overall the food was delicious but the service and atmosphere was not what we were hoping for from a hibatchi restaurant."

  • "Our waiter was excellant... Our Food was poor... Very "Americanized" Japanese Restruant. The "Taco Bell" of Habachti. I have never been to a Japanese Restruant where they do not have ginger or do not use seasoning to flavor the food.... After spending a large amount of money we ended up leaving and getting a Maxwell Street Polish Sauasage to satisfy us.... We had a group of 8. All felt the same."

  • "I was at ROJ this past Saturday with a group of 6. We were seated promptly upon arrival with our 8pm reservation. Ladies in the front were very pleasant. I enjoyed the stir fried veggies that came with every meal which had carrots, onions, mushrooms and zucchinis. I hate carrots with passion but they sliced it so thin that I barely tasted it. You can also order veggies without it. The shrimp is my go to dish. They are deveined and always plump and fresh. ROJ teriyaki sauce is a nice blend of soy sauce and sweetness but not gooey-ish. It's light and good with all the dished and over the rice. Friends had seabass, king crab and they all enjoyed it and said it was fresh. Chef Peter was very funny! Last note: NEW CARPET! Good job!"

  • "We made res on line at 8 pm. Seated at 8:30. Greeted by rude waiter 8:45. During the wait we sat near the computer terminal the wait staff use to enter orders. The entire evening that is all we heard was complaining and whining about their job. The food was covered with oil, butter and salt. Portions small. During our food preparation, the chef prepared 5 separate meals - for TAKE OUT ORDERS not at our table. Lastly, when the chef gave the take-out food to the "meat preparer" he did not even take off gloves or change them. When we discussed our experience with the manager she was gracious and apologized. We were shocked but she seemed almost like she had already heard this that evening. She gave us 80% of our bill in gift certificates."

  • "Food was.... let's say OK. To bad the cook couldn't explain what he was doing because he didn't speak english. We had no waters to drink, asked for a coke and got a green iced tea and no server around to change it, had to go to the bartender quite a few times. No knives and the meat was not cut all the way. Had to eat the fillet cold because nobody brought the sides. To top it off the check got all mixed up with the other people at our table and the beautiful 18% gratuity included. Great job Ron Of Japan, I will never go back, never recommend!!!!!"

  • "Ron of Japan has been around for a long time, at least over 40 yrs as this was the restaurant where my husband proposed to me. Just like airline travel, times have changed. OK now to come casual and it is kid friendly. The food is good and the egg sauce is to die for which is the only reason we keep coming back. The decor hasn't changed and the menu is pretty much the same so if you like familiarity, this is your place."

  • "I've been going to Ron of Japan for 17 yrs and my husband for 30+ yrs It's under new management (I believe the owners son took it over) and it shows! They have replaced the nasty carpet, really cleaned the place up from top to bottom! Bigger drink glasses (for water and pop at least) and other little changes...the food has stayed the same (thankfully!) it's a fun tasty place to visit!"

  • "Went to celebrate my birthday, was not at all impressed. Our waitress seemed like she had BIG attitude. bowls of soup were just slid in front of us, our salad bowl was smacked down on the table. I guess you get no choice of dressing because there was this glop of stuff on the salad ALL with NO conversation from her. Now I don't expect full disertation, but at least a here you are or here's your soup. After we were done with salad, a long 15 minute wait, notice I said after we were done eating, not 15 minutes after they were served. Finally a man who I presumed was manager came over & offered us free appetizers or a drink since we had to wait,so, my hats off to him. After about another 13 minutes, our chef finally came to cook our meal."

  • "My girlfriends and I love the Hibachi grill restaurants. Not only is it usually quality food, but there's a show. This restaurant was very bland (tasting and looking) and there was no show. I mean, where in the world what the onion volcano that we all love at these places? No where to be seen, that's where. NOT impressed, especially given the pricey prices."

  • "The food was very bad, most of the Japanese food was eliminated, and the prices we were charged were about 10% higher than those printed on the menu. Staff tried their hardest but could not do anything to overcome these obstacles."

  • "I was very disappointed in the quality of food and the cooking experience. I expected the chef to have more personality and wanted a performance. I guess i went to the wrong place."

  • "Place was 1/3 full at 730 on a Friday night, which should have been our first clue. Years ago, you could never get in on a Friday. Drink menu is very limited. Waitress was friendly. Our cook didn't say one word from start to finish. Kind of smiled/smirked a couple times. Food was fine, nothing great. No energy in the room. I'm guessing it won't be long before Ron's is history."

  • "Always a reliable place to go for good food, and they were very accommodating considering we had to be in and out within an hour and a half to make an 8 o'clock comedy show."

  • "My husband had ate at Ron of Japan around 15 years ago. He always wanted to go back. Needless to say, the food was no different than House of Kobe. The Chef at our table was extremely nice as was our waiter Vincent. The sushi menu was very small and was the main reason my husband wanted to go back. Due to the small sushi list and the restaurant being too hot to even want to eat, we will not be going back nor recommend to a friend."

  • "Wanted to go to a hibachi style dinner and the only one that I could find in downtown Chicago was Ron of Japan. The food was just okay--nothing special. I have had much better at other hibachi-style restaurants. There was no "show" by the cook. At other places they make the train out of an onion or flip broccoli into people's mouths or shrimp tails into their hats! None of that! The waiter hardly said two words to our table nor made eye contact. Pricey and disappointed!"
