Diner Reviews
  • "Fine dining in a shopping mall? Roka Old Orchard does offer the same great food as the downtown location minus the atmosphere. However bar area is nothing more than a nod to the idea that you might want to have a drink and relax with friends before sitting down to dinner. The dining room is cramped and did smell a bit musty. Overall if you are spending for a dinning experience then you should pass on the Old Orchard location and head into the city."

  • "Nothing like the Scottsdale location. The ambiance was lacking compared to the one in Scottsdale. The bar seemed like an after thought. Better restaurants in Chicago land for the money. The ambiance doesn't match the price point."

  • "The food was outstanding, the service flawless, the food came to the table very quickly, we liked that. We were on the closed porch and it was wonderful until a group of 10 young women came, they should never sit such a large group in that small space, all at once the noise level was unacceptable and we had to scream at each other to hear. The manager offer to change our table, but we were there first. We were told that the porch is typically reserved for tables of 2's. But this group had requested the porch. Oh well...."

  • "I went here for my anniversary and The experience was great. The food was delicious so worth the hefty pricetag. I would only come for special occasions though."

  • "This is a great concept and the menu is fabulous, the food is good but it does not fit the location and just doesn't feel right. The new location is in a mall across from a parking lot across from a busy road across from a cemetery in a town with medium priced competitors. The mix just doesn't go together. I can't justify spending $100 per person while eating across from The Gap. The downtown location oozes charm and makes you feel the "value"."

  • "With a spate of newer restaurants, Old Orchard which once only had a food court is now a dining destination. Roka Akor offers a sleek, trendy space with more outside dining than inside seating. Our waiter was terrific at welcoming us, explaining menu items in detail, and making sure we had everything we wanted. One of us ordered scallops with the most amazing Brussels sprouts (I'd go back just for those!) and one ordered sashimi and sushi which were delicious and innovative. We also shared a green tea creme brûlée that redefined the dessert and was simply scrumptious. We ate outside which was quieter than the dining room inside. Will go back for more!!"

  • "Roka Akor is always delicious! The service is great and overall it's a wonderful experience. We went with our 2 kids and everyone was very accommodating and helpful. The servers are knowledgable and helpful. Will definitely go back again."

  • "We have been here several times and have never been disappointed. The food is fresh, creative and delicious. Our server was top notch! The only down side is the cost. Very expensive which does not allow us to eat here as often as we would like."

  • "Nice place for innovative Asian dishes. Small portions, limited sushi menu but attentive service. Pricy."

  • "Had omakase with a friend. We thoroughly enjoyed the rolling onslaught of delicious seafood, meat, and veggies, both raw and cooked, plus a mountain of dessert at the end. We also had a good waiter who chatted with us and helped us select a good sake to accompany our feast. Considering the price, I'd save the omakase for special occasions."

  • "I've been to Roka Akor multiple times. Love it every time. This time I brought my friend for a girl's night out. She loved it. We shared several small plates and were totally satisfied. The bill was far less than we expected considering the quality and quantity of food we enjoyed. Can't wait to return again. "

  • "This is a great option at Old Orchard and in the area. The food was well prepared and the service attentive. We enjoyed the smaller suburban version of this restaurant. Early bird dinner special was delicious and an excellent value."

  • "Nice place...bad bites. The presentation was pretty, and the service was great, but if the food is bad, what's the point."

  • "We have eaten at the Old Orchard location twice now and the food is amazing. The friendly wait staff couldn't be better. Everyone was great and we had multiple people assisting us and they were all knowledgeable and pleasant. We have also eaten once at the Scottsdale location and feel the same way about it. Highly recommend! "

  • "Ate here several times for lunch and dinners...all were excellent! Our waitperson, Jason was great! He knows the food well, has a great personality and all recommendations were perfect--although, have to say that the Prawn dish was a little small for the price and was a tad overcooked--but, the seasonings were good. We always enjoy the uniquely prepared brussel sprouts -- in fact, we had 2 orders of them! Still feel every time we dine there that the Chef is creative in every sense of the word! While pricing is pretty steep at this place it is worth every penny so we usually reserve dining here for special occasions! 11/12/2013 Roka Akor - Old Orchard Favorite 0 Outstanding Outstanding Outstanding Outstanding"

  • "I have absolutely no complaints. The server and service were great, the food hot and delicious, and the food and beverage prices were as expected for a $$$ restaurant. The added bonus was they cut your food before it is served - except for the salmon which would be kind of tricky. My wife said it was her best birthday dinner ever. We are having company from L.A. and intend on taking them to Roka Akor for dinner during the week. It's a winner."

  • "We had a table right near the open kitchen and saw entres and desserts carried out. We were quite impressed. Entre portions were rather small, however. We had the fixed price menu. Would definitely go back to try other menu selections."

  • "The food was so fresh and great tasting. We ordered appetizers, sushi, steak fish and dessert. We loved everything we ordered. The presentation was that of a 5 star restaurant. I highly recommend this restaurant. "

  • "We had been to the Chicago location several times, but this was our first visit to the Skokie restaurant. The place is smaller than downtown but very comfortable and the food was delicious. Our server, Irene, was especially helpful in suggesting various items and her description of several dishes was spot on. We will definitely be back again soon to enjoy some of the things we did not have room for."

  • "We ordered mostly from the sushi menu and was a little disappointed. Some of the items were a tasteless. Nice presentation but not too much taste. Also, some of the dishes are too expensive for what they are. I don't think I will order them again. Other entrees are very good and the wine list is good too."

  • "The food was beautiful and sushi was fresh. The waitress told us they're known for the steaks, but there is only 1 steak item. and it's market price for $32/oz (4 oz minimum). The steak carpaccio was too thick and super skimpy on the portions for the price."

  • "It's our second time at Roka and our second time doing the tasting menu. Food was very good and presentation was beautiful. You will not go hungry with all the courses they bring. Pork belly was divine but really didn't need the overpowering kimchi as an accompaniment. Baby oysters were cute but not particularly flavorful. Beef was very tasty and there's lots of it - didn't miss the Wagyu beef for an extra $30 each. Risotto had good earthy flavor but was a bit on the mushy side for my taste - like it firmer. For the first time in my life, we sent back a bottle of wine -- everyone noticed the bitter flavor in the 2nd bottle of Benovia. They replaced it immediately - kudos for the service. $700 for 4 w/ 2 btls of wine so be prepared!"

  • "Very nice decor and unique menu. Everything we ordered was delicious: ribs, lamb, butterfish roll, sweet potato and brussel sprouts. The only negtative is the open kitchen setup. While it's nice to see their special ovens which the restaurant is very proud of, the amount of smoke from grilled steak in the restaurant is overwhelming. The place is tiny and you can literaly see a cloud of smoke in the air. They should have invested in equally superior ventillation systems."

  • "Great food but service was rushed. Our entrees arrived before we finished our soup, appetizers and sushi. Also, the chairs at our table were made of wooden slats."

  • "Wonderful and delightful food. The best part of our experience was our server, Michael. Hands down the best server we have ever had anywhere. He knew the menu backwards and forward. He was able to pair our wine and taste to the food. He gave such awesome recommendations. It's a rarity to have a gem of a server that showed so much passion for the food and was gave quality information of each dish. He made our evening such a spectacular time."

  • "This is no ordinary restaurant. The food is great and unique. Service was excellent. Sushi is fun but I would recommend trying everything on the starter section and share. Fun craft cocktails as well. Yes it is on the expensive side."

  • "We had a very nice dinner at Roka Akor. The service was excellent - our server was very patient with our allergy requests and the chef accommodated us as much as possible. The food was very good - unusual flavors and combinations, but very delicious. Great wine list for by the glass as well as bottles. We were seated in the outdoor patio area that had heat lamps which was okay, but the parking lot lights were very bright so the ambience was a bit off. The inner room of the restaurant is much nicer seating. All-in-all, a great dinner and experience."

  • "Although our server got overwhelmed at one point, we still had a great time and I'd rate the food and service as very good. It might not be a place to go every night because it's a little pricey, but it's definitely a place to go when you can. It also, for better or worse, reminds me of being in Vegas at times--great people watching, fun ambiance."

  • "Food was average for the price. Very $$. Service was too attentive. Did not like the over attention as I couldn't converse with my friends due to the waiter kept interrupting. I have had better sushi at small local spots."

  • "Not cheap but very tasty beautiful sushi well worth the cost"

  • "The imported steaks were extraordinary! As was everything else we ordered--new and delightful taste sensations with every ala carte item. On the other hand, portion sizes were somewhat underwhelming, especially for the price, and the lobster special featured a scrawniest underfed disappointment. Ambience was more Asian minimalist than romantic. Large and colorful LED light fixture is more distracting than complementary to the environment. Smoky incense came on a little strong at times, leading us at one point to think somebody enjoying a cigarette nearby. At these prices don't be shy telling the chef what pleases you and what doesn't."

  • "The service here is notable - our server, Lee, was phenomenal. On a busy Saturday night he was friendly, patient, did not rush us, and made excellent recommendations. He was always smiling. The food has been excellent both times we've visited. The consistency of divine food, lovely presentation and impeccable service means we will surely go back frequently."
