ROKA AKOR - ChicagoFantastic ExperienceBecause of our schedules my wife and I dine out at least three times a week in the Chicago area. Without a doubt, ROKA AKOR is one of our favorite restaurants in River North. The food is fresh and well prepared (try the butterfish appetizer), and the service is imprompt, courteous and informative. He paced each order very well as we were in no hurry. Excellent fresh fish and prepared perfectly.
Fun atmosphere and you won't be disappointed with any menu selection. After being seated promptly, I don't think there was ever more than a 15 min span without our server or waitstaff checking on us--VERY attentive. Food was very good--appetizers were the waygu beef & kimchi dumplings and the prawns; awsome! For entrees: I had the ribs, which were meaty, tender, with just the right amount of glaze. My friend raved about her cod dish. Hotpot & sweet corn were also great. We ended the dinner by splitting the chocolate cake. We didn't go overboard on drinks, just one margarita each. We knew this is a pricey restaurant, so weren't surprised by the bill. It was worth it. Sashimi selection for 2- fish was fresh and absolutely delicious. We tried a few different appetizers (specials were delish) we also had some shrimp tempura and tuna tartar. Some of us had the sea bass accompanied with fried rice. Few of us also had the steak. All very good. Definitely try the corn - I wouldn't recommend the brussel sprouts w/ fish flakes. GREAT FISH! We've had great Japanese food all over the world and were quite surprised to find such a gem in Chicago (which has great restaurants but we weren't expecting a Japanese one at this level). Our first experience was so good we went back a second time during our recent 5 day trip - something we rarely if ever do. The food is amazing and the service is friendly, attentive and very accommodating. They really make you feel appreciated. This is the first Open Table restaurant we've given 5 stars across the board. Scallop dynamite was not the usual jungle of scallops but an amazing raw like scallop on a roll. The hamachi roll was perfectly crunchy but not overwhelming. My uni was the best I have ever had and it was just so smooth, milky but the texture was not slimy. I mean wow!! The cod was good but I have had better...it didn't have a punch like the others. We also had the steak which was cooked perfectly. Salmon was also on the table but I didn't not try as much and other food dominated. When I made the reservations at Roka Akor, I added that it was our 5 year anniversary and they sent us a surprise dessert with "Happy 5th Anniversary" written on the plate. He was very knowledgeable and thoughtful to even make sure once the good was brought out that he double checked w the chef to make sure it was made properly. The clientele seemed to be mostly the after-work crowd. We had great service and the special tasting menu. The service was not as good but the restaurant was extremely busy and my guests did not seem to mind. The food, again, was excellent and everyone, even the unadventurous enjoyed their meals.
