Diner Reviews
  • "Usually this place is pretty happening, with better service & quality of food. But for some reason on this particular Sunday evening, I was less than pleased with our overall experience. The place was only about 10% full, and still the service was slow. Took too much time in btwn dishes & I honestly lost my appetite. I would think twice before coming to my once fav sushi spot again."

  • "Everything I had that night was remarkable! I recommend the steamed edamame, beef dumplings, and the Yuzu Miso Marinated Black Cod."

  • "Why it took us 3 years to try ROKA is beyond me! The food was creative and superb, wine amazing and service attentive. They catered to my wife's gluten intolerance to a fault. The atmosphere was energized and, although there was a buzz, you could talk comfortably without straining. It's a special place for guests, celebration or just a fabulous night out!"

  • "We were out celebrating that night and dinner was the perfect compliment to our evening. Everything was perfectly executed by the kitchen and our waiter Bryan. The wine pairings and the attention to detail made the total dining experience flawless."

  • "The food was quite excellent, though was unable to best some of the other high-end sushi establishments I frequent, and the service was alarmingly slow. Our one hour lunch meeting quickly devolved into a two hour escapade; luckily my dining companion and I had plenty to discuss!"

  • "Went for the beautiful sashimi, came out raving about the steak. Their super-hot charcoal grill creates grilled steaks and grilled fish that genuinely taste different than anywhere else. The people I ate with called it some of the best food they've ever had."

  • "Celebrated daughter's graduation with family - loud, but wonderful food and service!"

  • "Fish was fresh, great environment. great customer service but the waiter probably need to gain more fish knowledge. The waiter insisted the fish ib frobt if us was yellowtail but it taste and look nothing like a yellowtail. she then double checked with the chief and return and said that it was something else. Otherwise, great japanese restaurant."

  • "Started with a mojito that was excellent. They were out of light beer which was a bummer. The pepper appetizer was really good. We ordered a variety of items which ranged from shrimp tempura to tuna sashimi. One of our party did not eat fish and she ordered a beef dish which took a very long time. It was worth the wait because she also order a cucumber roll which never arrived. The chocolate cake was AWESOME! Overall, good and it's rather pricey. The woman who filled our water glasses and who took our plates was great! The waiter was very busy and this woman was more attentive than the server."

  • "The three of us opted for the chef's choice at $95 a person and we were treated to an adventure that we won't soon forget. I can't remember how many courses were delivered to our table, but it was like a fireworks display that wouldn't stop. Everything was wonderful such a nice change from ordering the same old "safe" favorites."

  • "We arrived for our anniversary dinner and were treated spectacularly. It was the perfect touch of romance and ambience. Will make this a regular spot!"

  • "Our service started off well but it was very poor once our guests arrive. We had to call the waiter to even order our food. I also had given him my CC to charge the bill at the end and he forgot and ended up bringing the bill to the table and we didn't want our guests paying for any of it. We still got to pay but wish it happened more respectfully and subtly hence we had given proper instructions as well as provided our card in the start."

  • "Way overpriced. We've had equally good Wagyu steak at BLT in Miami for way less and larger potions."

  • "This was my second time dining at Roka Akor...it was just as wonderful as the first time. The staff is very attentive...the food is excellent. And the drinks are fantastic! I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "There is not a bad choice on the menu. Defintely recommend the butterfish cold plate, the siracha chillii Hamachi roll plus all of their scallop dishes are over the top. Also, the service is impeccable. The wait staff is very attentive and knowledgable about the menu. Also for gluten-free patrons they have a menu that accommodates very well."

  • "Fabulous place to eat. Food was amazing, beautiful presentation and the service was great. Drinks were plentiful and we even received a complimentary glass of champagne from the manager when we were seated at our table. The place was a little loud but manageable for a conversation. On my list of great restaurants in Chicago!"

  • "I've already posted photos and a review on my Facebook page. I had the miso black cod which was superb, along with delicious side dishes. The complimentary sushi was different and welcomed as well as the bubbly. The response I received on Facebook was overwhelming. One person thought I was talking about a new restaurant in Seattle and was disheartened to find it was in Chicago. Another friend will be coming to Chicago next week and is planning to dine at Roka Akor. Great job!"

  • "Wow, all I can say is wow... Roka was very accomodating to us, despite being dressed very casual. They let my husband do the decadent omakase and I ordered ala carte from the menu. The amount and quality you get for the price is probably one of the best deals in town. The sashimi simply melts in your mouth... the variety suits every taste... Irene our server was psychic and a very good listener as we got everything we wanted and more. My highlights include the butterfish tataki, wagyu dumplings, robata scallops, lamb cutlet and crispy brussel sprouts (which hubby usually hates but loved these!). My husband LOVED everything and we simply had a lovely time. As a foodie couple in an overwhelming foodie town, we highly recommend & will return!"

  • "Roka Akor was one of a few restaurants that I found which had great food reviews, and was open late and also located close enough to Arie Crown Theatre where we were attending a graduation. I was a little worried when we were greeted by the hopping bar scene at the front of the restaurant, but our group (age 18-70ish) was escorted to a large table in a more serene space in the back. In my Open Table reservation I noted that we were coming from a late graduation to warn against a possible delay, but as soon as we were seated, we were welcomed with champagne and a tuna tartare appetizer. The group loved the wine selection, sashimi (divine), topnotch tempura, tender pork ribs, and fab dessert choices. Service was superb. We will be back."

  • "Food was great and lots of variety. We had the waiter order for us which resulted in excellent and popular choices. It was a bit expensive but worth it."

  • "After eating at this establishment numerous times, recently ate lunch with business colleague and experienced a disappointing meal from beginning to end. While it had been a while since I'd last eaten here, I cannot imagine what has led to this slide down hill. This said, I am willing to give it another try as I understand every restaurant can have a "bad day"."

  • "This was out first time at Roka Akor and were will definitely be back. the food was outstanding-everything we ordered was delicious, presented well and prepared perfectly. We really enjoyed the intricacies of the flavors and the innovation with spices. We were seated immediately at our reservation time, the staff was very attentive, repeatedly stopping by the table to see if all was well, and I felt the advise from the waitperson on how to order was very accurate and helpful. • "We went for lunch. While the food was good (although the quality of the ingredients, presentation, taste, is not what it was when they first opened in Chicago) the service was poor. Things came out at different times for me and my dining companion, salad with no dressing, etc....No apologies, the manager said it was because the chef wanted to make sure the salmon was properly cooked through (wow, shouldn't he figure this out before sending out the other plate??) Even when we first arrived there was no one to greet us, even though the restaurant was basically empty. We were seated by a bus boy. Enough said."

  • "I love Roka but have only ever been to the London branch. The experience here did not disappoint - very friendly wait staff, great food, excellent wine/cocktail list. It's a large venue so perfect for larger groups plus I believe there is a private room for functions. This is definitely a place to take foodies to - great creativity with the menu, attention to detail and high quality ingredients. The space and decor is also fitting, very chic and inspiring. "

  • "We had a fantastic birthday dinner. The tasting menu was creative and delicious, and food allergies and preferences were cheerfully accommodated. The service was excellent and the ambience was wonderful. It was perfect. We would happily go again! "

  • "I had the scallop dumplings and they were fabulous. Must order. My husband had the roasted scallops which were also great. But the one must have is the Japanese rice with truffles. This is the standout dish! Even if you don't get the truffles it is still a taste experience. "

  • "We've been to Roka Akor many times and have always had a great experience. Last night was even better. Our waiter Mark was fantastic and absolutely made the evening with humor, food recommendations and a full glass. Adam the bartender made us custom drinks, per our flavor preferences, that were superb. Highly Recommend!"

  • "The food was fantastic and the service was even better. We had the deluxe sashimi platter, it came with a good variety and was done well. We also ordered the salmon because my wife really likes it, it's typically not my favorite, but here it was amazing. Would definitely go back."

  • "I have to say I was very disappointed after eating at ROKA AKOR. We asked the Waiter what he recommended and it was the worst fist I have ever eaten. My guess is that the fist was getting old and they needed to push it. Also we were charged for food we ordered but never received. "

  • "I had a reservation and arrived on time, but was informed that no tables were available and that the wait would be 15-20 minutes. Then they said I couldn't wait in the bar and get a drink because the bar was closed for a private event. No apology, no reasoning, but they treated me like I was the rude one and it was my fault. When we finally were seated, there were about 7 open tables in the restaurant and we were seated next to the register. Definitely not what I expected. fortunately, the food was FABULOUS!!!"

  • "We celebrated my husband's 40th birthday at Roka Akor. We had been once before, but wanted to go back. Everything was outstanding: service, great seats by the window, and the food was the BEST we had. Ever. We opted for the Omakase, so the chef chose what we were served. It was a 5 course meal but it felt like much more than that. Great variety of food (beef, butterfish, lobster, tiger prawn, duck, wagyu beef and lots of truffle) and it was so, so delicious. We felt taken care of and our server was terrific. I recommend this restaurant, it gets an A+++++ and we cannot wait to go back!!!"
