Diner Reviews
  • "We love all the food at roka akor. The only complaint if I needed to be picky is that the tables are so close together that you feel like the servers and bus boys are on top of you all the time. The place is very loud which is great if you like a place with energy. If you go on an earlier night In the week I'm sure it would be less crowded and the noise level would be lower."

  • "We did the "Decadent" tasting menu - worth every penny. Presentation was spectacular, flavor profiles were a magical journey, and the service was impeccable without being stuffy or intrusive. I live in Minneapolis and am now looking for excuses to "need" to be in Chicago again. "

  • "The food was amazing and our server was equally as good. Each food and beverage recommendation he made was spot on and he really knew the menu well and took great care of us. My next trip to the area I will dine here again."

  • "All tapas dishes come out very hot and great presence. Service excellent and really great atmosphere to spend a couple hours hanging out. Can move to the bar too. Recommend to all ages!"

  • "This resturant was really nice for a girls night out. All I ordered was this crab maki. It was so delicious and fresh. Everyone was saying this resturant is expensive but I paid less than $20 that night. I would go back."

  • "taken as a complement by my friend who lived in Japan: this is the best Japanese food he has had since he left there. The service was completely attentive and immaculate without being overwhelming"

  • "I have been to many Japanese restaurants around the world, including Tokyo, and this is by far THE BEST place. The fish just melts in your mouth, delivered daily! Don't go for the A La Cart menu, instead, have the Chef create a dining experience for you. It is expensive ($128 p.p.), but worth every penny. The service is also outstanding and the servers are very knowledgable. A must go in Chicago, period."

  • "I was there with a date. Both of us loved the food and the service was great. Was expensive, but you get what you pay for. Must try the lobster tempura."

  • "We had an awesome experience on April 4th wonderful bartenders George and he was training a new bartender which whom we loved! The whole experience was excellent! The manager was top notch. We are looking forward to our next experience The food was the best I've had! We celebrated my husbands birthday! We found our best spot here this place is a gem and Brian was an outstanding wAiter!"

  • "We went to Roka as part of our annual birthday celebration and everyone was WOWED!! One of our group who said she didn't usually care for Japanese cuisine raved about the food. Our server was exceptional. When he found out we were all celebrating birthdays he informed the kitchen and they made the occasion quite memorable. If you like superb Japanese fare with an energetic yet tasteful ambience this is the place. Sake aficionados will be pleased with the breadth of choices. Going back very soon."

  • "I cannot more highly recommend the Business Lunch Special for $24. You don't have to be a fancy shmancy business executive to take advantage of that special. You can be a regular person right off the street. And you get SOOOO much food for that $24. Not just that. It's a lot of QUALITY food. Heck, we even got an amuse bouche! Our miso soup had lobster in it! I just can't get over that. Furthermore, all of the service staff were exceptional with the exception of the host."

  • "hosted a business colleague for dinner. We had the chef's tasting menu and let the waiter and chef decide on our different courses. It was a great experience and we tried, and enjoyed, things we probably would not have if we had chosen entirely our own menu. Our primary waiter, and others who helped out throughout the evening, we friendly and helpful, everything was explained when it was served, and they did not unnecessarily interrupt the business conversation. A very enjoyable experience all around."

  • "This is my second visit to Roka Akor and once again I enjoyed it tremendously. The menu is Japanese drivin so can be a bit daunting if you are unfamiliar with this type of cuisine. The knowledgeable wait staff can guide you through that with suggestions but the whole fish and any of the steaks (I had the filet) are a no miss."

  • "Our service was amazing! Loved everything about our evening, including Chef Fred's special choices for us! Delightful! We'll be back!"

  • "Every single item our group ordered was wonderful. I am not a veggie person but even the vegetarian options were wonderful - I never knew a brussel sprout could taste so good. Highlight though was the Japanese A5/11 wagyu ribeye I had - it melted in the mouth! Others at the table ordered the lamb with Korean spices which was also excellent as was the chicken teriyaki and Miso cod. Went with the wife and another couple - service was very attentive, honest and not stuffy. Would definitely recommend for a date night or fancy dinner. Reservations through Opentable was simple and they seated us on time."

  • "If you want to take out a date to a classy sushi/steak restaurant downtown. This is one of my favorites. You may spend a little more than most places but the food and service is great everytime I go!"

  • "Service was fantastic and our waitress knew we had a show to go to so the food was brought out incredibly fast (and much appreciated). The food was fantastic -- only to be outdone by the service!"

  • "I went with friends and we ordered the chef's tasting menu. There were several fish dishes that we would love to try again. Some of the stand-outs included the tiger prawn, banana leaf cod, and tuna. The meat dishes were similarly fantastic. Unfortunately, the dessert nearly ruined the whole meal. I never understood before why the "Top Chef" chefs were so scared to make dessert, but tasting how off-the-rails things went, I understand now. There were three serviceable fruit sorbets, but a bizarre green-tea flavored mush that wasn't just"not-for-me", but it was objectively offensive tasting to everyone. It was an unfortunate end to an otherwise great meal. Not the best I've had in Chicago or even River North, but very nice."

  • "We thought this place was just amazing for Sushi. Possibly the best ever. The service was really great, right up to the point where our server realized we weren't going to order their very, very expensive multi-course dinners. (at least $98 per person) After we ordered about $100 worth of food and drinks (apparently much less than he wanted us to) he was much more short with us and even rushed us with the bill at the end of the night. This would have been an all five star review if it wasn't for that little detail. We were just so surprised since everyone at the place was so very top notch professional, we never would have expected such a bad reaction to a couple spending ONLY about $100 on dinner."

  • "Our party of 3, which the staff graciously changed for us when our daughter was able to join us at the last minute, really enjoyed our meal here. We selected the Chef's week menu and the appetizers and main courses were absolutely outstanding; we all agreed that the seafood was the best! The desserts were good but nothing I "have to have again". We will definitely return."

  • "I usally drive so haven`t got chance to get inside before. One of my friend told me about this place, spicy tuna roll,I know Japanese dishes are pricey. But this week was Chef`s week(although, restaurant`s week was over, but there is still Chef`s week!) Went for Lunch, there`s choice of menu. Every dishes was nicely decorated and so Yummy!!! Can`t wait to go back!"

  • "We went with friends and were a little overwhelmed by the menu. The waiter did try and help make some recommendations but as we started ordering (in courses) he was no where to be seen. It would take him 30 minutes each time to come back to our table... so no new alcohol could be ordered promptly and additional dishes. So the service (although he seemed nice enough) was frustrating. The food was pretty good and I would definitely go back and try some different items."

  • "Cold and hot plates delicious, with unique presentation. Sides as well. Shasami was very good--pricey for the amount of fish you got though. Freshly ground wasabi at the table was awesome!"

  • "If you are a fan of real Japanese food - from sashimi and sushi to genuine Wagyu beef - you definitely want to try Roka. We have yet to be disappointed in a dish here. The open charcoal grill definitely adds great flavor to anything they put on it. You can make a great meal with all the raw fish you can stand, fabulous grilled meat and vegetables, or any combination that suits your taste."

  • "I kinda have high expectation after I did some reserch on this restaurant before making reservations during my long weekend trip to Chicago. It turned out just perfect and more. The menu was a bit too busy for me but lucky the server was extremely helpful and recommended us just enough food for without any selling scheme. Love every single dishes, fresh and well balanced tastes. Probably the only not good thing I could say about this restaurant is the lighting, it is a bit to the dark side for my taste, as I would like to see what I eat, especially for Japaneses style dishes as dish presentation/appearance is part of the food experience."

  • "Our dinner service was way too fast. We felt like we were rushed to eat our food and felt pressured to eat our food quickly with constant service that seemed too over bearing and eager to take our plates away. We felt as if we were a bother to them. Our dinner from being seated to walking out took less than an hour. We had less than 15 mins with each course of our meal so obviously our feelings of being rushed were relevant and true. Overall, this place was no bueno. I would never go back, and my girlfriend and I will probably never recommend it to anyone. Very meh experience."

  • "Continue to enjoy Roka Akor (Downtown) for lunch. Great menu, great service, imaginative. Acknowledge it's pricy, but great value. Lobster miso soup is unique among Japanese restaurants."

  • "We enjoyed the food and energy greatly, the atmosphere was fabulous, and the service good. Expensive as expected and smaller plates OK, but waiter a bit high brow. The big issue was the satisfaction survey. It arrived with the check, I placed my credit card, and on return for signature we noted the survey had been completed - not in my handwriting. Of 5 possible points, all service questions and comments 5 of 5. Only Menu options were 4 of 5 and apparently I really liked the waiter per comments section. Really! Cost him tip dollars and this review. Seriously! Truly unfortunate as this is a great place with excellent execution, save the service issues."

  • "As a first time diner ,I was extremely happy with my dining experience. We started in the bar and enjoyed the bartenders who were friendly and knowledgeable, watching the large block of ice get turned into ice balls and large cubes was an added attraction. Our dinner was excellent. We shared a few appetizers and found them all great and the seafood was very fresh. We chose a few signature entrees and deserts and nothing disappointed. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves great food presented well and served by great staff."

  • "Great place for all occasions. my guest and I were greeted with champagne for my birthday. Service was amazing and the sushi was even better. I will definitely return. Hosts can work at being a little more friendlier and smile."

  • "Bring an empty stomach if you select OMAKASE! The samplings were fabulous and generous. The seasonings treated your taste buds and the variety of fish/meat/side selections presented a broad palette of flavors, textures, and scrumptious delights. I found the table arrangement to be noisy and cramped, but the food was spectacular."

  • "I live in the neighborhood and finally made my way to this spot and found the food to be very good but not memorable. I will have to say that four cocktails and sushi for three ran $200, seems a bit excessive."

  • "They always have amazing service. Our waiter had excellent recommendations. The steak and duck are both great by far the best duck dish in Chicago. Great wine list!"

  • "Not my first visit here and not my last. Food was outstanding… Our server Aaron was the best. It was a Wednesday night and the dining room was completely full. It's pricey… But so what. The experience was worth it. If you haven't tried it yet… I highly recommend it."
