Diner Reviews
  • "My Husband and I and another couple had a lovely brunch on Sunday. I had been to the Roger Sherman many years ago for dinner and it was wonderful so we thought we'd try it again and it was still as lovely as ever. The only complaint we had was the server had a little bit of an edge. When I told him my drink was a little too spicy and could I please have some ice he made a comment which was not necessary and overall he wasn't very friendly."

  • "The food and service at the Roger Sherman Inn are consistently excellent. The ambiance is tops - especially in the summer when the porch seating area is open."

  • "Place tired, needs restoration, esp restrooms. We were seated in bar, since we did not want to eat outside on porch. This was clearly for convenience of staff, as there were empty rooms with more ambiance that we would have preferred to our cramped table with a view of the kitchen and the owner reading a paper at the bar. Our disinterested waiter seemed to have bad case of apathy. He brought our cold appetizers to us (vichyssoise soup and a house-made pate) with apologies that toast points for pate were forgotten by the chef. He said they'd be out soon. He brought a roll as compensation, then the toast points. It would have been better for him to bring everything at once, since these were cold dishes. Lobster salad roll did not taste fresh."

  • "What a delicious spot for dining al fresco of a summer's night. The food was splendid, the wine outstanding, the service superb!"

  • "Very good as always but they ran out of steak which was a big disappointment"

  • "Lovely service, food, wine and ambiance on the terrace. Definitely will return."

  • "We, and another couple, chose this restaurant to celebrate our joint Anniversaries, which fell on a Monday night. The setting was perfect, with a lovely table on the porch, but the experience went downhill from there. As long time Fairfield County residents (3 of us grew up here), we're used to Fairfield County pricing, but as a former Restaurant server, Manager & then General Manager, I equate price with overall quality, including service, which in our case, was friendly but totally inept. The food was well prepared but, again, not exceptional enough to warrant what was charged for it. I could chalk it up to it being a Monday evening staffed by the B Team, but with a bill of $400+, we'll not take the chance there again."

  • "We dined outside on the porch which was absolutely beautiful. I ordered fish and chips which were done perfectly. My husband ordered the endive salad and the scotch salmon. The endive salad had a bit too much dressing on it and should have had a light dressing but had a cream dressing which was overpowering. the scotch salmon was fresh and delicious according to my husband. the atmosphere was lovely."

  • "Roger Sherman Inn is my new favorite place for special occasions. The restaurant and the entire inn has old world charm, yet the recent renovation make it seem new. The menu has all the usual favorites like steak, chops and fish, but also has interesting specials with complex sauses that are delicious. This is a step above any place that I have dined in Fairfield County - and you'll pay for it. Prices are at the top end of restaurants in the area. Not outrageous - just expensive. What you'd expect for a special dining experience."

  • "Saturday nights w Vinnie Ferrone on the guitar at the bar is among our favorite New Canaan nights out! In a town with an over abundance of high end food options, the Roger Sherman Inn never dissappoints. Everything is delicious, from the lobster bisque and escargot as appetizers to the roast duck and pumpkin ravioli main courses. And, though they are famous for their profiteroles, we always end with the chocolate molton cake in a martini glass of vanilla ice cream. Mmmmmm..."

  • "Even with new owners the food at the Roger Sherman Inn still tastes like Country Club food...way too expensive for what you get! Nice setting...has potential, but has a long way to go to be considered fine dining. "

  • "Wxpensive but very nice ambiance for a special occassion. Only downside is waiter became too friendly and started talking too much.put a damper on my rate time with my wife and kids as a family. "

  • "Sitting on their large wraparound porch or on the patio, the views are lovely. Should it be a little cool outside, the clear plastic curtains keep the inclement weather out and the heaters on the porch keep the temperature just right-having an open porch will be perfect when the weather warms up. Service is quiet and unobtrusive so you can have a nice conversation and the menu has something for everyone. We have many restaurants here in New Canaan, but few where you can sit quietly and talk with friends."

  • "I had the best chicken. Of course, it was called Poulet something. Juicy and tender. Just like mama used to make - no, better!"

  • "Dined here on a Sat night. Scallops were overcooked. Couscous had a hint of rancidity. Rack of lamb was good, but nothing special, and definitely beyond the medium rare we ordered. Of four diners, none were excited by their dinners. And the desserts were a real disappointment. The Napoleon was nothing but 3 lace cookies stacked with a heavy, sweet filling. Overall, a big disappointment. "

  • "Whenever you want to be treated like royalty, this is the place to go. We feel like we are dining at our country club! Always a relaxing gourmet meal!"

  • "We went on a Friday and now we understand why the place was so empty. The food was mediocre at best. The service was inattentive except when it was time to get the check. It wasn't hard to overhear the owner claiming she had just returned from Florida and quickly realized that her cocktail on the bar was receiving more attention than the customers.. Her behavior was unbecoming and not representative of a New Canaan dining establishment. My wife and I will not be going back. "

  • "We've lived in the area for over 20 years and never found a reason to go to the Rodger Sherman Inn, the topic came up while having dinner at another restaurant and decided to make a date. I'll start with "We'll be back"..the food, service and the ambiance were fantastic. We tried the pan seared Filet Mignon with a baked stuffed potato (to die for), and the Grouper perfectly cooked . A bit pricy but worth the experience. I will recommend this restaurant and be back very soon."

  • "I hate writing this for a place that serves fabulous food, but no way will we go back there. Apparently, it's a bad idea to reserve a table for 2. Or maybe we should not have worn jeans. It is Friday, guys. The website didn't say "jackets required." We were tucked, no, hidden, in a corner, out of sight. When the party of five sat at the table near us, I was blocked in. That group took all of the server's attention. It took forever to get my soup, and when finally delivered, it scalded my tongue. Overall, the pacing was atrocious, and it was made more frustrating by the people at the next table having everything brought to them in a timely fashion. The entrees were sublime, but I can go to better places and be served properly. Thank you."

  • "This was our first visit to the restaurant on the day after valentines day. We chose the Sat versus Friday night expecting their regular menu however it was a special menu instead and it was not communicated in advance. Although disappointed at first as well as many other patrons complaining, we were pleasantly surprised by the excellent meal we ordered. The setting is very warm and inviting and quite romantic. We did find the crowd to be a mix of couples, young however mostly older generation. The restaurant is quite pricey, so it is not for those that want to save a buck"

  • "I have been going here for years. And each time I leave I ask myself why I ever go back . Over priced. Horrible service. It is incredible that they can not fix their problems."

  • "We live near the Roger Sherman but have not gone in years. Quelle erreur! We chose it as our living room and entertained guests there on a Saturday night. A great choice. We will do it again. Also, we are vegan and they were very accommodating. No problem. Chef did a great job."

  • "I was here for a New Years Eve dinner. The special menu offered was great. The atmosphere was quiet and upscale. There were three servers either bussing food, refilling drinks or taking our order. This is an 'old school' Inn with valet parking (except the valet drivers could not drive standard). Not a cheap dinner but a memorable one."

  • "Had Christmas Day dinner here. Very excited after hearing such good things, but turned out to be a real let down. Service was VERY slow, our waiter could not answer any of our questions about the menu (no knowledge of certain ingredients or how food was prepared) and was unattentive in general. Food was just OK (despite the reputation) and even with a $75 prix fixe for only 3 courses (app/main course/dessert), we were charged an additional $4 for a decaf coffee at dessert which I found astounding at this price point. A beautiful venue, but overall a very disappointing experience. One more thing - If you do go and it's winter, ask to be seated away from the door. We also froze the entire meal from the door opening and closing."

  • "We had a lovely and delicious dinner on a busy weekend night. The inn is decorated beautifully for the holiday season, and truly provides a historic New England atmosphere. Service was friendly, efficient and professional. Appetizers of salmon and escargot were very good. The traditional steak frites was prepared perfectly, juicy and tasty with crispy fries on the side. The lamb was good, though not great as it was slightly overcooked. Desserts were wonderful - we had the chocolate cake, which was a small round cake with a crusty outside and rich, moist interior, served in a martini glass over ice cream. Profiteroles were outstanding - small round pastry shells filled with ice cream with freshly warmed chocolate sauce poured over the top."

  • "Was anticipating a memorable birthday dinner for my spouse. Greeting and seating was promising. Waiter was prompt and friendly. Very professional. Unfortunately, food though good, did not rise to same exceptional level."

  • "For Thanksgiving Dinner, the ambience of New England was well-invoked, with reservations honored with only a short wait despite being at capacity in attendance. In terms of food, the quality was far superior to any other prix fixe holiday dinner experienced else where in a long, long time. Yes, the cost is a premium price ($65) with a very limited menu and very high prices for alcoholic beverages by the glass ($12 for house wine, but coffee included in $65). However, if you have to dine out on a holiday and can afford $100 per person including beverages, tax and tip, it is a top location to consider."

  • "We thught that the food was not great and was pricey for what it was. The ambience and service was very good."
    Dined on 11/16/2013
  • "A good restaurant, with a bit of a 'has been' feel. Ambiance is formal, so expectations are high. For the price, service wasn't strong. No lack of waiters though. Starters and main course were good, but dessert is not the kitchen's strength. At this price point, there are better places in the area."
    Dined on 11/16/2013
  • "The Roger Sherman Inn and Restaurant is exceptional, the food is the best, the ambiance is warm and inviting, and the service staff is attentive, but bot intrusive. I highly recommend this place for everyone."

  • "we went for our anniversary, we were looking for a nice location. We requested a quiet table not in the middle of the restaurant and they were very accommodating. The food was delicious and the pace of service was excellent, was not rushed but did not feel like we had too long a wait for next course. we ordered desert and were pleasantly surprised when they brought it complete with a candle, especially nice was it was on the house. Would certainly go there again!"

  • "Hadn't been to the Roger Sherman Inn for a few years, now I know why, we couldn't have been more disappointed in the ambiance and service. The food were good and the appetizers were delicious however, the service was atrocious, it took twenty minutes just to get menu's and after ordering 2 bottles of wine for a table of six, we had to pour our own glasses, not once did a waiter come over to refill anyone's glass. Twice i had to get up and ask the maitre d to please send our waiter over and the restaurant was less than half full. also they need to turn the lights down, everyone felt like we were eating in a cafeteria. there were candles on the table but were completely unnecessary given the overhead lights."

  • "The Roger Sherman Inn has always been good, convenient and traditional american. The recent dinner we had (Duck, Halibut) was outstanding. The duck was not fatty, excellently prepared, and perhaps the best duck I have ever eaten, and I like duck. The halibut was east coast fresh, and also excellent. The service was friendly and accommodating, and the evening was outstanding. It is the best restaurant I know in Fairfileld County."

  • "Our evening was extremely enjoyable. The Roger Sherman Inn is a stately inn with a wonderful feel to it. Seating was somewhat limited so we sat on the veranda. This was fine when our dinner began but the fall chill overcame us by desert time. When we asked if we could have the desert inside, there was still no room. They would do themselves and their guests a great favor by having some form of heating outside on a night like this. However back to wonderful things about the dinner, my love had the salmon and I one of the specials. Both were extremely tasty and the salmon was cooked to the exact specifications. We would normally share a desert, we went our separate ways to take in as much as possible and were both pleased with our choices."
