A word from Roe
Roe is a Modern American seafood restaurant.

Discreetly hidden inside of the boisterous Block + Tackle, Roe offers an ever changing menu to be enjoyed in four courses. One seven course Chef's Tasting is also offered nightly with advance reservation. Chefs Trent Pierce and Patrick Schultz prepare creative dishes, utilizing innovative and classic techniques from an open kitchen located directly in the dining room.

An optional wine pairing draws from the thoughtful beverage selection ranging from Northwest, to sparkling, and seafood friendly white and red wines from around the globe. Roe also features a full bar with beer, spirits, and sake.

In order to serve you best, Roe requires notification of any food allergies, or dietary concerns at the time of reservation. An attempt will be made to accommodate all requests received with enough notice, though some allergies can not be avoided. These include severe shellfish and dairy allergies.

Diner Reviews
  • "If not the best, at least top 2. Absolutely blew me and my girlfriend away. Went all out with caviar, tasting menu and wine pairing. Extremely memorable meal… it was like eating art. I highly recommend Roe."

  • "This was my second time at Roe and I wondered if it would live up to what I created in my mind from my first experience at Roe. It was just as good, which is exceptional. We had such a good time there my whole party talked about it all the next day. Every course was a delight. 100%."

  • "One price fixed menu per day. Choices? Add caviar or not. Buy their matching wines or order some other drinks. The four course dinner is fixed. Ours was wonderful, delicious, most unusual. Highly recommended. Make your reservation well in advanced. It is worth it. Most unusual fish preparations I have ever had and wonderful."

  • "Great service, like your own private dining room, at Roe. Dishes are delicious and inventive..but small and fortified with repeated servings of excellent baguette. Interesting aspect i retrospect is that one really doesn't need teeth to get through the meal..all of the fish is very soft and there is nothing crunchy in the menu. Excellent place fr a special occasion"

  • "Great experience…good food. I enjoyed the experience and food was very good. I see this as a special occasion place."

  • "Absolutely amazing. They only have the tasting menus available, and as the name implies it is all seafood. But, so good! Inventive, fresh, lively flavors. Service was brilliant. We had the wine pairings and those were so well done that my friend is rethinking her dislike of white wine. Wonderful,"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed the creative presentation and subtle flavors at our first visit to Roe. The wine pairings most definitely enhanced the four course offerings. We selected one of each of the two dish offerings, giving us a chance to taste each. All dishes had unique flavors, creating a complete experience, from aperitif to dessert. The wait staff was very attentive and knowledgeable. Overall an outstanding experience - we will be back."

  • "This small restaurant is at the rear of Block and Tackle, only seats 18-20 people. We had a wonderful dinner experience with unique menu options."

  • "Some of the most unique seafood I've had in quite some time. Japanese and asian flavors presented with a French sensibility."

  • "We enjoyed our experience totally. The seafood exploded with flavors to savor, wine paring excellent, service outstanding with a quiet reserved dining experience. We both had the 4 course menu with wine and in order to enjoy the quality items we chose different items and shared with each other. Perfect way to celebrate."

  • "There is only one place in the PDX area that can compete with Roe, and that is the Painted Lady. Each dish was inventive, subtle, beautiful, and delicious. And so were the wine pairings. Service extremely attentive yet non-obtrusive.Don't go here if you want big portions -- that's not what this place is about."

  • "My husband and I visited Roe and had a wonderful experience. We sat at the Chef's table and had the chance to have tasting portions of everything on the menu. We started our meal off with some lovely sustainably raised caviar and delicious blini and enjoyed the wine tasting. The service was wonderful, the food was terrific, and the speakeasy atmosphere was a lot of fun."

  • "4 of the dishes blew our minds. Tuna, Ceviche, Scallop, and the Mero Sea Bass. Wow, those were amazing. My cheese and sorbet course was bizarre and I LOVED it! Steve had the chocolate and swooned. The wine pairings were excellent. Loved the traditional presentation for our Oscietra Gold. All in all, a lovely meal, room, and service."

  • "My husband and I each ordered different dishes to sample from one another's plates, a good selection from the 4 course prix fix dinner. Wine pairings were stimulating and informed. Each dish was imaginative, complex but not so much so that you couldn't figure out what was what. One fish preparations that stood out had monk fish liver puree in the sauce, a light touch of a strong flavor that evoked the ocean. As others have commented, we loved the freeze dried chocolate mousse with a small scoop of something sweet on top sat atop divine drops of caramel whiskey sauce. When the waitperson asked if we wanted anything else, I joked that a bowl of the caramel whiskey sauce would be nice-he actually brought me a small one! ."

  • "Roe is the perfect place for a romantic dinner or special occasion. We enjoyed the pairings, including aperitif and digestif. It's hard to pick a favorite from the menu; each course was sublime. Favorites were the ceviche and sea bass. As always, the service was impeccable. I can't wait for our next visit. Thank you!"

  • "This is the El Bulli of Japanese fusion food. A temple to the sublime. Each dish is elegant and complex. The chef's table was magical. One of the best meals we have. Ever. Had."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary at Roe with my 24 year old son. I guess we could all be classified as "Foodies." We all agreed that it was in the top five dining experiences we have ever had. It is very intimate -- they only take 36 reservations a night. So it is never noisy and you don't feel crowded. However you have to like what they do. If you expect standard faire-- done in a traditional way it might not be for you. But if you appreciate high quality seafood -- impeccably prepared in interesting ways-- and great service -- this place is for you. It was the kind of meal where you don't want to take the last bite of any of courses."

  • "I have been lucky to have dined all over the world. Some meals have been certainly more memorable than others. Our experince at Roe is certainly easily in the top 10, if not the top 5. Stepping through the secret door from the bustling sister restaurant, Block and Tackle, was like entering a Zen space. The food was simply amazing. The quality of the seafood and the care taken in execution and presentation was definitely five stars. The Sommelier was incredibly knowledgable and had a wonderful sense of humor while interacting with our table. Next time I will do the Chef's Counter to I can see those two experienced Chefs in action. There is a reason why GQ named this one the best new restaurants in America. Go...experience the magic!"

  • "I'm sorry it's taken me this long to make it to Roe. The food was mind blowing, the presentation impeccable, the service warm, friendly, attentive, while still allowing you to have a good dinner conversation. I'll be back, often."

  • "An exceptional dining experience. The food is over the top--continental with Asian influences. It is impossible for me to describe different dishes because each was very complex, elegantly presented--I love the big white bowls--and served graciously--all the options were fish/seafood. We were offered the pre fixe menu with four courses. We each ordered different things and we were ecstatic with all eight selections. Roe is in the back of Block and Tackle so you have a sensation as you go through the black door you are going to a special place and it is; one enters a small room with two chefs working their magic to one side and about ten tables set simply with silverware and chopsticks. Best of the best."

  • "We are seafood lovers and the simple four course menu with superb choices really was impressive. Most unusually creative dinner that I have experienced in years even though I travel extensively and enjoy a wide range of restaurants. Highly recommended!"

  • "I cannot wait to return! Chefs Pierce and Schultz are creating some of the most interest seafood presentations anywhere. Menus change frequently (weekly?) to allow that creativity and talent to shine, and to take advantage of what is fresh and seasonal. Service is generally exceptional. Perhaps what is truly exciting is that the wine pairings are spot-on; with four courses, I rated nothing lower than an A-. These are people who truly care about the food and the entire dining experience."

  • "This was the finest meal I've ever had in a Portland restaurant. It's a fixed menu, 4 course; there are 2 selections per course, so we (2 of us) got both each time. It was fantastic!"

  • "the food was very inventive the Salmon end Mero bass where wamong the best prepared fish i had ."

  • "And its parts, the four courses of a $70 fixed price meal, are each, individually, lovely. Drawing from mostly modern techniques, the three savory courses (raw, shellfish, fin fish) and delightful dessert course come together to make a beautifully paced, surprising and delightful meal. Dungeness crab with winter squash whip and a half-dozen other ingredients carefully chosen for their complementary and contrasting textures and flavors still let the crab shine. The sea bass, cooked sous vide, was perfect. My dining partner and I chose two different desserts; each one was fantastic. We must also call out the waitstaff, who were attentive, creative, and informative to exactly the level asked. The wine pairings were also very well chosen."

  • "The four course fixed price menu is as innovative as it is fabulous. If you like fish there is no other restaurant in Portland that compares with Roe, for quality, unusual and creative selections coupled with excellent service. While not inexpensive it is worth every penny; a must if you are a foodie who appreciates good food created by a very talented chef. It is refreshing to find such a good restaurant where you can actually carry on a conversation with those at your table. No loud music, or noise of any kind. Too many of the new restaurants in Portland equate loud noise with good ambiance, I find it a turn off and try to avoid places where you can't carry on a conversation during a meal."

  • "We have dined here twice and have been knocked out by the inventive, delicious and technically brilliant cooking. Servers are beyond attentive. The wine list is astutely chosen and prices are fair, and they don't sneer if you bring in a special bottle -- we brought a dry French cider and the wine expert seemed thrilled. ($20 corkage is very appropriate.) One of the two or three top meals ever in 20 years in Portland, along with Castagna at its height. They only thing that is NOT perfection is the too-wide, uncomfortable table in the middle of the room. Be sure to request NOT to be seated there."

  • "Don't really know what else to say about Roe: the meal was outstanding from end to end, and some of the little touches (three flavored salts with the bread service, the small glass of warmed dashi broth) really iced the cake for us. We eat out a fair amount, and this was the best, most surprising restaurant meal we've eaten since perhaps 2008 or 2009. Really can't say enough."
    Dined on 2/13/2014
  • "Awkward wait service, but great food. Wait staff needs to learn how to read a table and see if it is time to take their plates or not. When celebrating a special occasion, no one wants intimate conversations to be egregiously disrupted again and again."

  • "Excellent creative seafood. Go with the tasting menu, or create your own by sharing with your partner. Somewhat spendy but worth every penny and... better than the x2 priced NY's La Bernadine's tasting meal!"

  • "We absolutely loved our dinner at Roe! The tasting menu had so many creative, delicious dishes and the wine pairings couldn't have been better accompaniments. Special thanks to the knowledgeable and friendly staff, who made the night so memorable."

  • "A friend of mine loved Roe so I had to try it. Great service, good atmosphere. Sadly, food is bland, fairly tasteless. Needed salt. Everything cooked sous-vide, no open flames. Tuna tartare overwhelmed by too many ingredients, crab buried in a mess of squash foam, scallop in seafood medley had funky/slimy texture, and the "ultra red tuna" was underseasoned. Confit tootfish was the only real winner of the night: flaky, buttery ,lovely. I loved the sauces and emulsions: sunchoke veloute, uni-lobster emulsion, ceviche/sashimi citrus/juices... also the desserts, surprsingly. Great chocolate and pear concoctions. Overall, I think Roe would benefit from getting a burner and putting some color and flavor on those lovely fish dishes!"

  • "The food was outstanding as was the service. The sommelier's wine pairings were excellent. The ambiance of a hidden restaurant within a restaurant makes you feel like you're a special "in the know" person, kind of like a 1920s Speakeasy which is awesome. Can't say enough good things about it."
