World class dining in PortlandWe sat at the chefs counter and dined on the chefs menu. A three hour jubilation of sashimi, spirits and wine. Our waiter paired the wine with the meal and made the experience very enjoyable. Explaining the food and the wine as each course was delivered was very educational and entertaining. We highly recommend Roe to any and all foodies. Worth every penny spent . We will be back6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMExperience never to be forgottenAbsolutely fabulous....wonderful food, wine pairings, service! Very impressed and will return next trip to Portland. A California SF/wine Country foodie!6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat surpriseDidn't know what to expect when we went into the backroom through construction at block and tackle.
Great ambience, very intimate setting.
The wait staff was very friendly, the food was great- cool new fish preparations that you don't see else where
will return6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMRoe Cuisine ExquisiteThe food served at Roe is created with the utmost talent, skill, precision, and delicacy. Seafood is truly turned into art, without sacrificing any optimal qualities of the ingredients. All ingredients served were perfectly prepared. Flavors were perfectly balanced and seasoned. The wine paired with each dish complemented all the flavors very well. The Oil Poached Salmon had the consistency of a suvee, and was the best cooked piece of salmon I've ever had from a technical standpoint.
I definitely plan on returning to dine again, and recommend to all lovers of seafood in it's truest prepared form.
-Connor P Boolen6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMContinues reputationOur 4th visit to Roe, we were once agin delighted. Trent Pierce continues his tradition of artistry with fresh fish with ever exciting new ideas and complex but appropriate flavor combinations. The wine flight choices were also right on. Hopefully this SE Portland neighborhood gem doesn't get too oversubscribed.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellentChefs Patrick and Trent spend hours sourcing and preparing the outstanding and creative seafood dishes. For an incredible dining experience, order the chef's tasting menu, and reserve seats at the chef's counter as we did. You'll have the rare opportunity to watch the chefs prepare your dishes, and talk to them about them.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing seafoodBoth food and wine pairing were great. Extremely interesting tastes. Will definitely be back.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMMeets all expectations! We were seeking a unique experience for a special occasion and were willing to spend $$ for a superior seafood dinner and Roe delivered on all counts. We did the four portion dinner and enjoyed every item. Service was excellent - pace was fine @ about 2 hours for the full experience. I don't think we've ever experienced the unique combination and the freshest items served @ Roe.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMSimply amazingThe meal was amazing. We did the four coarse 'our choice' tasting. Every plate was beautiful and every bite delicious. We will be back again! Best meal I've had in the nw by far.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding wine pairingsWe had the chef's tasting menu with the paired wines. Best wine pairings I have ever had -- perfectly complimented the art-like entrees. Plus, the server was incredibly educated on the wine. Knew tons about each one. A thoroughly enjoyed meal.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMspecial occassion spotcounting ourselves as foodies and folks who like superb food and semi-quiet places, Roe is now one of fav places. 4 of us ordered the prix fix dinner and had a most wonderful dining experience. The food was so fresh, creative and delicious my husband and I decided to return as a twosome so we wouldn't have to share! Service was informed without being intrusive. Ambiance is quiet, refined and fun. It feels like you are in a speakeasy, without all the noise. What a unique and wonderful experience.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMVery SpecialLoved this small, dark, secretive room. Few tables. Lovely service. Food was beautiful. Great for a romantic dinner, or special evening with friends. We took my mom there for dinner with 4 friends. Was perfect.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMDinner for twoReally happy with our first visit to this place. Asian fusion, great compliemnts/pairings. Menu small but everything we ordered was wonderful. Small place seats about 20 people. We will return!4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing seafood combinationsAmazing seafood combinations with spot on pairings!4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMI regret not taking notesI regret not taking notes but I was on a date and having a great time. However, the food was excellent. Chef Trent is back in his element with fish. The layers of flavors and the sauces are outstanding. My only quibble was with dessert. It was good but a level below all the rest of the food we were served. Service is unobtrusive. I will be back for sure.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous diningWe had an amazing meal. Every bite of each of the four courses was superb. Thank you for a wonderful dinner.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of a kind-- unbelievable !!WOW... don't know what else to say... This was a unique experience from the start, when we had to figure out where it is. Turns out to be a "restaurant inside of a restaurant-- you first enter Wafu, a boisterous ramen bistro, then you're led to the back, through the drapes and another door to a more subdue and private area-- with calm music, attentive service and mind-blowing food. The only way to order is the 4-course with wine pairings-- sit back and let the innovative favors come to you!4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food!!We tried the Chef's tasting menu. It was pricy but well worth it.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMCreativeA very quiet and romantic restaurant tucked in the back of a vibrant bar. The food was fantastic - if you love fish this is a must. The service was a little slow, but the food was worth waiting for. The Sea Bass was cooked perfectly. Wonderfully creative. The atmosphere is a little claustrophobic - no windows. Definitely give a try.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMCame here for a special birthdayCame here for a special birthday and we were not disappointed. We were fortunate enough to get the chef's tasting menu and a bottle of champagne that paired well with the whole meal.
Each course was amazing and I appreciated never feeling rushed, which is probably why it took us 4 hours to eat!
It was truly special and I will be dreaming about some of those courses for a while.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWhat a great experience itWhat a great experience it was!!! The food, ambiance, service...everything! We look forward to going again!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMbrain surgeonThe food is artistic and delicious however the portions are tad bit on the small size for the price - specifically the appetitzers.3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food at Roe was amazing. The food at Roe was amazing. One of the appetizers we had with geoduck could be a dish I would like before I die :) The service was also very good; however, our server was a bit stiff, never asked how we were doing as people (just jumped right into "telling us a bit about the menu"), and also never asked what we thought of the food or meal (perhaps they just know it's that good? - even so, a bit pretentious.) But all the servers helped in clearing plates, providing more bread, making sure our water glasses were never low/empty. It would have been really cool to sit at the bar to watch the chefs prepare the food, but we didn't know that we had to specify ahead of time that we would like to do the chef's tasting menu at the bar.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMRoe has both exceptional serviceRoe has both exceptional service and food. We both had the four course guest choice and each ordered different things so that we tried 8 out the the 11 items on the menu. One of us ordered Ono Ceviche, Halibut cheeks with Prawn, olive oil poached Marlin with Lobster-Mango & lemon grass salad, & chocolate mousse for dessert. The other ordered slice cured salmon, scallop confit, cuttlefish "noodle" and braised short rib, seared porcini dusted butterfish, and sponge cake for dessert.
The ambiance was surprisingly nice considering that Roe is located in a square windowless room at the back of Wafu. The lighting in addition to the excellent food and service made it easy to forget about one's surroundings.3/9/2013 12:00:00 AMVery creative and tasty offerings.Very creative and tasty offerings. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived so we had to wait about 20 minutes outside in Wafu. Not a problem though as the host somehow found us a table in the crowded restaurant where we relaxed and ordered drinks. Once in Roe, we both tried different variations of the four course tasting menu and every item was delicious. I was most surprised by the dessert. I'm not a dessert person but decided to give the sponge cake a try and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It turned out to be a fine way to finish off an excellent meal.3/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Spot to Show OffOur party if 4 requested the Chef's Tadting, but apparently this had to be requested in advance, which we didn't know. However, they accommodated our request and we were able to enjoy an amazing experience. We were hosting a foodie couple visiting from Ohio and I feel that we were able to showcase for them some if the best dining Portland has to offer.3/2/2013 12:00:00 AMThis place is an amazing placeThis place is an amazing place for seafood. Although a bit hard to find, and somewhat limited in seating, if you are able to get a table, do so. The chef is extremely capable with the cooking, with a variety of influences.2/28/2013 12:00:00 AMNot enough room to write a full revWe had been anticipating a meal at Roe since reading the first reviews last fall. We were excited to book a table for our anniversary and arrived hungry intending to order a full tasting menu to experience as many dished as possible.
Upon being seated at the chef's table (which is more of a bar), we learned that the full tasting menu needed to be ordered in advance, so we were advised to order the four course tasting menu and each select different items. To accompany the meal, we worked with our server to select a beverage to complement each course. My husband ordered sakes and I ordered wines. The list was not huge, for example one or two chardonnays, pinots, etc., but the server said the list was designed to go with the menu.2/22/2013 12:00:00 AMA uni-que meal not just for urchinsFantastic! Though the tasting menu at the chef's counter is not inexpensive(by Portland standards), the experience is well worth the cost to those who have a genuine interest in fine food. The fun of watching the two chefs artfully crafting a succession of beautiful dishes was exceeded only by the delectable savoring of the progression of plates beginning with fresh, clean flavors and through complex, then dense lusciousness. Creative, inventive, satisfying--these guys really know what they're doing! Service was friendly and spot on without being intrusive, and we were treated royally. A great, special occasion experience for which we will find many reasons to repeat.2/2/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent menu with originalExcellent menu with original dishes. Went with three people so we could try the entire menu. Every dish was excellent. One of the people in the party didn't eat meat (but does eat fish) and could eat almost everything on the menu.
There were some nice wines on the menu, but it isn't extremely exciting. It would be nice to see some more mid-range Loire whites like Muscadets.
Service was very good. The room is a little bit echoey so it can be a bit hard to hear.
It isn't cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for.
Nice work! I don't think there is a place in PDX where you can get fish-based dishes in PDX that comes close.2/2/2013 12:00:00 AMCuisine was amazing-for theCuisine was amazing-for the true adventurer who is a fish-lover. Two drawbacks: The small room is behind a large Japanese restaurant and-
1. There is no rear exit from this small room
2. All the frying, etc. that occurs in the large Japanese restaurant permiates the clothing! We laundered ALL our clothing after we took them off. They smelled very heavily of frying!!1/25/2013 12:00:00 AMThis place was awesome andThis place was awesome and quite possibly the best meal ive ever had. I am from Omaha and we were recommended to Roe by some local chef's. We were able to get reservations for a thursday night and wasnt quite sure what to expect. We were seated in the rear corner and there were some spots left at the chefs bar, i asked our server if we could move to there and they accommodated our request. Service was spectacular, the chefs were focused, but did not hesitate to answer any questions. this is a must try restaurant wether you live in portland or just in for a weekend vacation. I totally reccomend the chefs tasting, 12 courses for $100 thats a steal! this is a 5*/5* restaurant and looking forward to dining again when im back in town!!!!1/10/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic new restaurant withinFantastic new restaurant within a restaurant in the always-creative Portland food scene. Inventive seafood, fantastic service.12/7/2012 12:00:00 AM
