Diner Reviews
  • "In the category of: we plate beautiful food for you. I'm finished with restaurants that do not cook anything to order, but rather "compose" food to order. Roe does that very well. You enter the back room through the Block & Tackle restaurant. We had the 4-course menu. 2 choices for each course; we had them all except for a 3rd dessert choice. 1st course: a sashimi and a ceviche; both were very good (composing here is fine). 2nd course: lobster (cooked but room temp) and a scallop that was not even seared so really another sashimi course, broth poured around it was hot; 3d course: salmon & sea bass; both barely cooked, room temperature & just a mush. Service is excellent."

  • "Had the tasting menu and it was among the best meals I have ever had. Truly adored it."

  • "Roe, tucked in the back of Block and Tackle, is its own little world. The room is beautifully decorated, and the service is simply excellent. Our dishes ranged from very good to excellent . And the few minor missteps (the dishes that were merely very good) were perhaps really just matters of taste -- dishes that while executed with real skill, seemed, to me and my friend, somewhat misconceived. But the hits were outstanding -- perfect execution and really clever combinations. The wine parings were well chosen, and the meal as a whole came together very nicely."

  • "Definitely worth the wait for a reservation. Meticulously prepared food with unusual flavor and textural combinations. Elegant room without being stuffy and a noise level that allows conversation without shouting across the table. Menu changes at least weekly, so a return trip is always a new and rewarding adventure. Has to be one of the most innovative and delicious seafood specialists in the country."

  • "We are always challenged to find a fun and unique dining experience when our business clients from San Francisco and Paris visit us in Portland. Roe was a huge success. So much so that both of our guests intend to return to Roe (with their respective spouses) when they are in the Northwest in the Fall. The food/wine pairings were perfect and the gentleman who described the pairings was very knowledgable and passionate about his craft. The service was the perfect balance of attentive but not intrusive. The food was beyond description for a neophyte food critic like me. Alli can say is it was phenomenal and I think Roe is the finest of fine dining in the Portland area."

  • "Everything was great. Salmon was the only complaint, mushy. Only res available was 5:45, so we opted to eat that early. Then as we were finishing up around 7:30-8pm, there was 4 of the 8 tables empty. Not sure what happened there, but would have liked a later res if it was available. Nice service and wonderful presentation. Priced well. Dessert was no the savory side, not our fave. Over all, a nice private dining experience."

  • "We did the whole works, caviar/champagne, chef's tasting, pairing. Expensive, but probably best meal ever in Portland in last 40 years."

  • "THE next place you should take your date. The service is outstanding and thoughtful, and the food was beyond delicious. Expect to be impressed."

  • "This was our second visit to Roe. Both times were outstanding. The food is incredible. We took an out of town guest there and he couldn't stop raving about it for his entire stay in PDX. The sommelier is really knowledgeable and passionate about his wine pairings. It is definitely expensive, but one of our favorite dining experiences around. I only wish there was more local seafood on the menu."

  • "I have only been there once but it is one of the best restaurant my wife and I have experienced in Portland. Now, this particular meal was mostly seafood set dinner. Now, they do change the menu every week but it you don't know like seafood, you may have to ask first. Also, the seafood appetizers were sashimi. We loves them but it may not be up your alley. The Seabass and Salmon main course were masterly cooked. We will certainly visit the establishment again."

  • "Not cheap but it would be much more expensive in say nyc. Loved the very earnest wine sommelier describing each wine pairing too. No snootiness - we had extra bread throughout the meal without having to ask. A must."

  • "They cook your food in a heated aquarium! So trippy, little vacuum sealed bags swimming around, cooking with no oil or fire. Pricey but worth it. Lot's of great details in the artful arrangement and insanely good flavors. No windows. Really. You're in a box in a secret room behind another restaurant. Secret agents eat here."

  • "Hidden inside another restaurant/bar, Roe is a surprise as you walk in to the dining room to be seated. The prix fixe fish centric menu was impeccable, with complex and delicious combinations of ingredients, executed and presented to perfection. Service was excellent, and staff was extremely knowledgeable and attentive. The wine pairings are well thought out and spot on for each dish, and the sommelier's explanations about each wine and the reason it had been paired with each dish added to our enjoyment of each course. Truly an experience."

  • "While the food scene in Portland is awesome, my husband and I had not found a great fine dining restaurant until we tried Roe. They exclusively offer a 4 course tasting menu, with 2-4 options for each course. We made sure to order different items for each course, and did the wine pairings so that we were able to sample many of the course/wine options they had to offer. We were not disappointed by any of them. The seafood was prepared impeccably, and each dish had many different layers of interesting flavors (many inspired by Asian cuisine). All the wine pairings also made sense, and we usually found that the food would bring out interesting notes for the wines. Overall, we really loved our experience at Roe, and will definitely return!"

  • "One of the best Portland dining experiences my brother and I have had (we have been to many great Portland restaurants). My second time to Roe and both have been superb. Keep up the outstanding quality. "

  • "I came expecting good creative seafood and thinking of Roe as a hit but the chef hit it out the park with every plate. Very well executed fatty salmon, mero seabass, and the chocolate dessert decadent. The wine service is good with a very knowledgeable sommelier. Cheers! Fernando "

  • "Roe is special. My husband and I decided to dine there for our anniversary and enjoyed everything about it. It's a small little treasure, hidden in a quiet back room with beautiful ambiance and impeccable, friendly service. We had the four course menu with wine pairings, and each of us ordered a different dish for every course, which gave us a chance to sample more treasures coming out of the open kitchen. It was a delight to watch the two capable chefs, who seemed to work serenely as one. We were hard pressed to choose a favorite dish from each course, as they all were unusual, beautifully presented and delicious. The food was an artful blend of French and Japanese cuisine with Thomas Keller's influence, and it worked superbly! "

  • "The best restaurant in Portland right now, Le Pigeon is a close second. The food, the service, the space, were all perfection. A wonderful multicourse menu with a choice of two options for each course."

  • "My 2nd trip to Roe was even better than the first. The ambiance is quiet and contemplative. The focus is on the food and beverages. The service is unobtrusive, but informative to the extent that you desire. I was again blow away by the knowledge and pairings from the sommelier. World class! And the food! The food is innovative, unusual, and profoundly delicious! I would say that this is easily the best restaurant in Portland, and one of the best in the USA. Original flavors, exciting combinations, and absolute gorgeous presentations. The menu changes often, so I'm really looking forward to my next visit to see what things the two chefs have created. I feel so fortunate to now be living in Portland to enjoy Roe regularly. "

  • "We went to celebrate my boyfriend proposing and this is now one of our favorite meals ever. I highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in an exciting evening. Just relax, be polite, and put yourself in the capable hands of the Chef and Sommelier. "

  • "What a find! We really had a great time. It took forever to get a rez but what a great dinner once we did manager to get a table. Lots of fun and I would do it again in a heart beat. Service was attentive and courteous. Food was delightful and the wine just topped off a great evening. "

  • "We did their four course dinner with wine pairings. A very well-informed host (he is not an actual sommelier but better informed than many we have experienced) described in great detail the sometimes unusual but consistently delicious and well-chosen wines. The food was very fresh high quality seafood. The preparations were elaborately prepared but with bright, clean flavors that allowed the seafood to shine. Portions were relatively small but we both left very satisfied but not feeling gorged. Highly recommended."

  • "We had about 90 minutes for dinner (before the opera) - food was amazing; the "speak easy" location was a bit bizarre, but the staff was knowledgeable and friendly...definitely allow for plenty of time to savor the food."

  • "Seafood cannot get any better than this. The level of attention and detail given to the preparation is unparalleled in Portland. A destination definitely for the bucket list."

  • "My husband and I were blown away by the chef's table offerings at Roe. While we enjoyed the entire meal the lamb and shrimp tartar was my favorite dish! I was surprised that all of the fish is cooked in an immersion circulator and had such a delicate texture. Most seafood restaurants rely on the grill or a good pan sear to cook fish - and I thought that is what I liked about fish. I was so wrong! The Hamachi had the smoothest taste and texture that I have never before experienced. Another highlight of the meal was an optional caviar service which was very hands on and such a fun and romantic way to start out at the chef's counter. I would definitely recommend this meal and will remember it as a special part of our honeymoon in Portland!"

  • "We loved it. Can't stop thinking about all the dishes. Have been to Michelin 3 star seafood restaurants that don't compare. Only problem was we should have made it our last meal in Portland because after that, nothing compared. Thank you for such an incredible dining experience. "

  • "Portland is known for simple outstanding food. Roe just tries too hard. We started with a carrot foam, which was good, but could have easily been an excellent soup. Next came dish after dish of ponzu foam, yuzu smoke, with complicated sauces and dashi broths. Each element on it's own would have been good if it weren't wildly over salted, but all together I couldn't ever get just a good bite of something. All the different layers cancelled each other out ending with plate after plate of salty messes. I would stick to Beast, Pok Pok, or Toro Bravo if you want a meal twice as good for half the price. "

  • "This was my second time at Roe and I wondered if it would live up to what I created in my mind from my first experience at Roe. It was just as good, which is exceptional. We had such a good time there my whole party talked about it all the next day. Every course was a delight. 100%."

  • "Great service, like your own private dining room, at Roe. Dishes are delicious and inventive..but small and fortified with repeated servings of excellent baguette. Interesting aspect i retrospect is that one really doesn't need teeth to get through the meal..all of the fish is very soft and there is nothing crunchy in the menu. Excellent place fr a special occasion"

  • "One price fixed menu per day. Choices? Add caviar or not. Buy their matching wines or order some other drinks. The four course dinner is fixed. Ours was wonderful, delicious, most unusual. Highly recommended. Make your reservation well in advanced. It is worth it. Most unusual fish preparations I have ever had and wonderful."

  • "I was ready for seafood prepared the old fashioned way. Fusion, Pacific Northwest Fresh..another gourmet dining experience dreaming of the French Laundry but with a "joyau de la mar" twist. Well, it was really a Sashimi experience with layer of experimental "Cheffing". The first course with the shaved foie gras was creative and definitely played dazzle with the palate. The rest of the courses were not as memorable. The wine list could be improved with more deep toned whites and a little more affordable whites to chaze the seafood around the taste buds. Very pleasant "Zen" like experience. For special occasions or just to try out the new kid on the block."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed the creative presentation and subtle flavors at our first visit to Roe. The wine pairings most definitely enhanced the four course offerings. We selected one of each of the two dish offerings, giving us a chance to taste each. All dishes had unique flavors, creating a complete experience, from aperitif to dessert. The wait staff was very attentive and knowledgeable. Overall an outstanding experience - we will be back."
