Diner Reviews
  • "I am never disappointed when I go to Rods. The food is always excellent as is the service. I gave the service 4 out of 5 stars because when we were seated we were given menus, water and butter. No one had come back to our table or had even acknowledged us for about 15 minutes. This is not typical Rods at all! I stopped a bus boy passing buy and told him that we had been sitting for about 15 minutes and no one had taken our order yet. A waiter then came to take our order and was very apologetic. He gave us a round of drinks on the house because of our wait which was a very nice gesture. From that point on, our service was excellent as was our meal."

  • "I have wanted to try this restaurant for a while. I got a deal on Living Social which was pay $35 for $70 worth of food. Was glad I didn't have to pay full price for it. Crab bisque bland and unseasoned . Had the porterhouse, it was good. It should have been, it's a porterhouse. Sides were mashed potatoes and scalloped potatoes. They were fine. My husband had the creme brûlée which was missing about two layers of the Caramelized sugar topping. All and all it was ok, not worth the money. Tab would have been about $150 plus tip, including three cocktails. They charged us a $5 plate fee for sharing a 18 ounce porterhouse ... Really???"

  • "Haven't been to Rod's for a number of years for dinner. The food was surprisingly excellent, particularly the Chateaubriand which was cooked to perfection. Even the veggies were wonderful."

  • "A friend and I had an excellent dinner at Rod's. We ate early as we had tickets for the nearby Shakespeare Theatre. The food was delicious. We ate off the Early Bird Prix Fixe menu and found the choices, as well as, portions, outstanding! I enjoyed the calamari appetizer, followed by a perfectly cooked and tender beef tenderloin. My friend was very pleased with her selection of Manhattan clam chowder, salmon and creme brûlée. My meal was capped off with a scrumptious chocolate mousse. All of our servers were very accommodating. I highly recommend Rod's for lunch, brunch or dinner!"

  • "The overall dining experience was good. I had one issue with placing the order. We were told by the waitress that clam chowder was one of the specials for soup (as a appetizer). Two of us ordered it. When it arrived, we were served split pea soup. When we told them it was the wrong order, they told us that it could not be wrong, ther is no clam chowder as a special. We decided to keep the pea soup. Later, the waitress apologised informing us that the chowder was the special during lunch; not dinner. So, it was obvious that the waitress wrote down "clam chowder", but they did not have it .... so they decided to give us pea soup hoping we would not notice???"

  • "We have been to Rod's many times in the past with our family and on special occasions. This visit honored our fortieth wedding anniversary. We began toasting with red wine before ordering . I ordered onion soup, salad, and jumbo crab cake. My wife ordered scallops and shrimps as an appetizer and tenderloin, potatoes and onion skins as the main course. It was a epicurean delight!"

  • "Food was terrific and well worth the high prices. Service was a little desultory, but not enough to detract from a terrific meal."

  • "2nd meal with tasteless filet mignon. Sauce has no zip. Disappointingly blah. Crabcakes mushy; too much bread - not enough crab?"

  • "This restaurant was hyped as having better steaks than other steak restaurants I had gone to. We had planned this trip for a week, and I brought 5 people to try out the food. We got there at 8:45 and they had run out of Delmonico steaks. The floor had a constant vibration in it . My party ordered a mix of steaks and seafood with several side items. 1 steak was overcooked, 1 was under-cooked, and 3 were done right. The mashed potatoes were bland, the asparagus was overcooked, and the lobster mac had pieces of shell in it. The seafood was up to standard and we had nothing bad to say about it. The waiters were friendly, and did try their best to accommodate the errors, but not on their A game. We were comped for 1 steak and given free desert."

  • "Took my wife here for her 30th birthday, based on the amazing reviews I read. The steak was fantastic, probably the most tender steak I've ever eaten. However the service was atrocious. The table we sat down at had two very visible food stains from the previous person. That in itself should have been a red flag, but we didn't make a fuss about it. It took a solid 15-20 mins before our orders were taken, and the service was downhill from there. We were never even given bread. It took well over an hour for our food to arrive, with no info from the wait staff as to what the hold up was. For a $200 meal, I would expect a little more attentiveness from the wait staff."

  • "When I reserved on open table, I noted that the dinner would be to celebrate my husband's birthday and asked for a quiet table. We were seated in the train car in a private little nook, which was excellent. No noise, no one walking back and forth, just us and the server. Food was great and the experience was wonderful. Seafood tower was fresh and tasty. File mignon and porterhouse were delicious and the sides were great. At the end of our dinner, they brought out free dessert plate with 3 different cake samples, cheesecake, chocolate mousse, fresh fruit, topped with a birthday candle."

  • "Go to place for business dinners and special occasion. Kitchen was unusually slow and staff was apologetic several times. However, I we were offered a complimentary item only when we pressed despite several apologies leading up to our inquiry. Seems an exception so I will plan to go back when occasion calls for a nice steak and seafood dinner when near Morristown."

  • "We celebrated our 30th anniversary at Rod's this evening the restaurant of our first date in 1984. The service was excellent, not overbearing but very attentive. My main course was a Porterhouse Steak to be cooked black and blue. The steak arrived medium rare. The waiter noticed and insisted he bring me another steak. The second steak was served as ordered. When the meal ended the waiter brought two empty plates one for my wife and the other for myself. He returned with a delicious assortment of desserts; a chocolate mouse served in a large chocolate shell, two slices of a creamy cheese cake and two slices of a multi-layered chocolate cake "compliments of Rod's". They more than made up for the cooking error. Overall a great evening."

  • "My husband and I were married at this hotel in 2009 and occasionally return for a romantic dinner and weekend together. The food is great, especially anything with seafood. It's not cheap, but so worth it. Service is very pleasant and the ambiance is lovely."

  • "The ambience and service in Rod's main restaurant was good to outstanding. The food and libations however were disappointing. My Mojito tasted like straight lime juice, my pear salad dressing was overly acidic. My encrusted salmon was not encrusted and served on a bed of cold potatoes. The cappuccino saved the day be being the best I have ever had. The cost of this meal was high end and I expected to really enjoy my dinner. My family and I will not return nor would I recommend Rods for an elegant dinner."

  • "Rod's is our "go to" restaurant for all of our family occasions, or if we are just in the mood for a really good mood. The Kellers are a wonderful family, and they know how to run a restaurant. Food is delicious, portions are huge and the service is excellent."

  • "Another unbelievable experience at Rod's! This time, the Keller Family Special NY Sirloin and a blackened Delmonico Steak with the Truffled Risotto! Simply fantastic! Do not miss what is arguably one of the best steakhouses in the Tri-State region."

  • "Old oak panelling, carved wood and stained glass give this white linen restaurant a classy, old school feel and atmosphere. Food quality is acceptable but does not match the atmosphere or price. Our appetizers were of average quality. Main course was a bit better than that. Service is very good and accomodating."

  • "Rod's is perhaps the best steakhouse in NJ. They are consistently delivering an outstanding dining experience. Try the Kansas City Steak or the Cowboy Steak done the Keller way. It doesn't get better than that!"

  • "I made reservations on Open Table, requesting a quiet place for special birthday for my spouse. We were placed a a nice table-for-two upstairs, and were presented with a surprise candle-topped cake at the end of the meal. I was glad the staff did not gather to sing as we really appreciated the quiet time together."

  • "We found this place through Open Table on a day trip to Morristown. We were really surprised by the extraordinary setting. The food was very good, creatively presented with some wonderful homey touches. Service could have been a bit more attentive but was solid. Will definitely return."

  • "I've dined at Rods many times and have never been disappointed. The food and service were excellent as always. The only problem I have is choosing what delectable meal to order! Had the filet mignon with lobster tail- both were prepared to perfection! They had a vegetable dish on their menu which was perfect for my vegan daughter!"

  • "My wife, daughter and I have been attending ROD's for quite some time; to include brunches and dinners. Most of the time, the service is good and the food is always very good. At our last visit, the food was very good, but the service was very slow. The waiter seemed overwhelmed. In addition, the air condition went out, but no one said anything. We heard the manager announce the situation to the people at the table next to us."

  • "My only negative comment was serving warm white wine which we had to leave in opened in the ice bucket for 30 mins to chill off! Otherwise great food. Sides could feed a family of four!"

  • "had brunch here; whoa! $30 for brunch? There is so much food laid out, no one could possibly eat it all, and the omelet and fruit I had was not worth paying this much for."

  • "My wife and I celebrate our anniversary(same day) at Rods every year we are in town. We request a railroad car booth because of the privacy, romance, and unique experience. We were married at Rod's ( Madison Hotel's Arboretum room). Typically you will have a wait staff that is very knowledgeable about food and wine and willing to converse about both. The expertise adds to the ambience and is something you don't find everywhere. You cans expect to spend $200 for 2 with a bottle of wine. Rack of Lamb is one of my favorite dishes at Rod's."
