A word from Rob's Bistro
In December of 2009, chef-owner Robert Ubhaus opened Rob's Bistro, a French Bistro located in the heart of downtown Madison. Rob's Bistro uses fresh local ingredients to create our dishes; including Seared Fresh Foie Gras, Cheese & Charcuterie Platter, Moules Frites, Duck Confit, Day Boat Scallops, Mousse au Chocolat & Creme Brulee. In addition to our brunch, lunch & dinner services, we also offer on and off premise catering for any event, including holiday parties, cocktail receptions, showers, rehearsals & weddings.Continued

  • "My two colleagues and I dined at here last evening. The menu is varied and imaginative. It's a BYO, always a plus. But the thing that almost ruined the whole experience was our waiter (he never introduced himself so I don't know his name). He was very unfriendly, almost surly. We had to ask for everything, an ice bucket for the champagne, a refill on the champagne (the ice bucket was located back by the kitchen, not next to our table), more water, a dessert menu, additional plates to share apps, etc. Everything seemed to be a real bother to him. Ultimately our table was serviced but other wait staff as well, and things got better. Having said that, the beet salad was good, the steak & frites was tasty, the onion soup was excellent."

  • "One hopes for Paris on the Seine, but settles for Paris on the Passaic, as the delightful menu holds out promise for things the kitchen doesn't quite deliver.. Perhaps I'm fussy, but salads shouldn't taste like the greens are fresh out of a bag and the bread was a few thousand miles away from a Parisian baguette. Steak is good, but the flawless fries are the highlight in that combo. Cheeses are good. Duck confit and pasta were excellent. Service is a bit detached, albeit attentive. Not a destination restaurant, but with BYO, it's reasonable neighborhood fare."

  • "After a really great start on the appetizers, unfortunately the entrees were not successful. Although all the food was well seasoned; a well done request on the pork first came out glaringly pink in the center (medium at if not almost medium rare), when we sent it back they returned it as shoe leather. Unedible (although removed from bill) my wife had no dinner that night. The medium well steak frites came out well instead. Although they do make the best fries. I really wish the dishes were up to par cause the general flavors and side dish preparations were really great. It was clearly an off night for the kitchen. But the shoe leather return was inexcusable. "

  • "Sorry to say but Rob was quite disappointing. I think a revisit on how to prepare classic dishes. to other restaurants in NYC, would be very helpful to the chef. Some good ideas but execution under par. For example, medium/rare duck breast was tough and dry as leather, roasted cauliflower was soggy, steak was tough and tasteless, French fries were dry..."

  • "My wife and I dined at Rob's Bistro after a concert on a Sunday evening recently. The food was fantastic -- excellent preparations of items that were up-scaled from commonly liked foods (e.g., not just salmon filet but salmon 'oscar' with crab and hollandaise sauce). Most main courses were in the French style. The dining room is cozy but comfortable. The service was very friendly and efficient. I would definitely recommend Rob's Bistro to others but I would advise they look at the menu online beforehand as they are 'BYOB' (as are so many in NJ) so they should know in advance what sort of wine to bring. I intend to return soon."

  • "Rob's Bistro is a a great find. Coming from Manhattan, my group had pretty high expectations, but each and every one was met. The staff was warm and helpful and full of information on the food, which was terrific. The beet salad was one of the best I've had--the hint of Dijon mustard is kind of genius and really makes it stand out from the standard beet salad. The cassoulet was incredibly memorable. I'm still thinking about the flavorful meat and the wonderfully crispy skin. Desserts were also terrific, especially the financier and the clafoutis, two very classic French dishes you don't see on menus that often."

The fries are the best and ask for the garlic mayo to go with them. Definitely recommend getting your own order!! I love the duck too. Wide range in menu to suit all moods and tastes. Have never been disappointed."

  • "Valentine's Day before another show at MAYO. Soup de jour, tomato fennel,did not taste the fennel. She had the fois gras, even better than last time! (preparation always changes) I had a potato tart, very tasty. She: seared duck with the polenta substituted for the risotto, superb again, bit well done on the polenta.Tiny brussel sprouts were burnt bit of a disappointment as we loved them last time. I had the rack of lamb special with parsnips, spinach and black truffles, fantastic! Should be bit more rare by most standards but it was pink and delicious. I had the fiancier, she the blood orange creamsicle ice cream, bit strong, but I shared my ice cream to compensate which they need to serve separately and to go she says! Will be back!!"

  • "We've been to Rob's several times before and truthfully, each time things deteriorate. My wife and I were there on Wed. night at about 7:30 pm. There was only one other table occupied in the entire place - not a good sign, despite it being a weeknight. Our server was pleasant and attentive so no complaints there. The hostess, who in the past has been interactive and pleasant, was unfriendly at best and apathetic when we asked a question. The food was average at best. The prices were OK - not too high, but the meal was unsatisfying and we're not planning on going back soon. It's a shame as Rob's used to be much better with an upbeat vibe. This experience really left us flat."

  • "First this is a cute bistro type place, not fancy or frilly, if that is what you are looking for then you are out of luck. If however you are looking for great food; which we were after the theater in Morristown, then I suggest traveling to this nearby place. The menu is for foodies, I had the French onion soup and my date had the fois gras to start, both fantastic. I then had the cassoulet and she had the seared duck breast, again winners. Finally the lemon brown butter financier with lavander honey ice cream was to die for in the words of my girlfriend. She loved the ice cream and wished she could get a container to go."

  • "This a a nice little bistro style place is nothing fancy but one of the places that makes NJ special - a little BYO owned by people who want to make customers happy. Menu items include steak frites, mussels w frites, cassoulet, etc. The staff is friendly and owners are present. The food is delicious (esp the frites). It is a great place to enjoy a bottle of wine and chat. The owners’ photos on the wall reinforce the fact that it is truly a chef-owned place."

  • "We've been here many times and the food is comforting and unpretencious. My husband and I enjoyed the beet and spinach salad and the tartiflette, which was just fabulous with ooey gooey cheese and delicious morsels of crispy lardons. I had the bacon wrapped pork, which came with roasted brussels spouts which was unbelievable. My husband chose the filet of sole, which was light and flakey and a wise choice considering he ate the majority of the tartiflette. Dessert was a decadent pear clafloutti with creme fraiche and cappuccino....lovely. Only complaint is the small size of the place, sometimes you feel like you are sitting on top of your neighbors. Obviously, it doesn't prevent us from returning."
