A word from RN74
Taking its name from the highway, Route Nationale 74, which runs directly through the Burgundy region of France, RN74 is a wine-centric French inspired restaurant.
RN74’s wine program, curated by Mina Group wine director and James Beard Award winning author Rajat Parr, focuses heavily on the greatest producers and regions of Burgundy. However, the well-balanced list also showcases international and domestic selections. RN74 has been awarded Wine Spectator’s highest honor, the “Grand Award” every year it has been eligible starting in 2010.
RN74’s menus are clearly inspired by the wine program; built on a foundation of regional French cuisine, yet market driven with refined, modern American influences. Executive Chef Adam Sobel, recently crowned “King of Porc” at Grand Cochon 555, brings an exciting flair and strong identity to the kitchen of RN74.

Diner Reviews
  • "They need to hire more bar tenders/waiters & also remember they are in the service industry. Everyone has an attitude problem, acts bothered when you ask for something and they think they are in NY or Paris but they're NOT! I went for a business lunch and we let them know we had to be at a 1:00 meeting. Our food order went it at 12:15 and didn't arrive until 12:55. Lunch should not ever take 40 minutes to be served! Please let this restaurant know their service is terrible! Michael Minna?"

  • "This place has it all and every plate is gorgeous. Service was outstanding."

  • "I have always enjoyed Michael Mina restaurants but this one has lost it's way, the food was borderline awful and the service was inconsistent and not at all attentive. I had the New York Strip and have been more impressed at Sizzler than I was by this piece of meat, the accompanying fries were so salty I barely touched them. I had enjoyed meals here in the past and heard it had gone downhill but recovered again - not enough for me - 3 people $360 including a bottle of Pinot and we overpaid by $200"

  • "RN 74 has a great wine bar, and terrific service. The menu, however, seems to be somewhat limited and lacks diversity. Some of the choices are not that inviting and there were not many entrees that I found appealing. It is on expensive side so my expectations are higher. Great waiter and enjoyed the wine list and many choices."

  • "Use to be one of my favorite resturants in SF no longer I will not be going back!! IT IS JUST NOT THE SAME as it use to be I'm sure the new chef and staff ect.. is trying hard but this establishment has lost what was so magical about it when it first opened which is to bad."

  • "This is the kind of restaurant I like: very nicely executed bistro fare and special attention to wine reflected on the great variety of options (mainly Burgundy). To make it perfect, a less anxious service and lower wine prices would be recommended. In any case, a place to go back for sure."

  • "•Food: menu almost never changes; evolved into a bistro style with current chef. Food OK but nothing to write home about. FFries really good, mussels so overcooked that the insides had shrunken up to nothing; sauce insipid and under seasoned, no complexity just butter; plate hot contents lukewarm. Wine portions expensive and a skimpy 2 oz pour if that much. •Service: alternatively obsequious or absent. Had to wait so long for a second glass of wine (ordered 3 times from 3 different waiters) that we had to stop eating to wait for it. One waiter commented on our private conversation (!) •only go there as a last resort. what could be great local spot to be frequented is rarely visited and then almost always disappointing"

  • "Food well prepared, creative well presented. Prices on expensive side but quality food. Menu - Regional Oysters (good and meaty), Squash Blossom panini (hot, not oily, mint pesto nice paring and cuts richness), Asparagus Burrata (was OK, needed salt, beautiful presentation), Halibut (rich, perfectly cooked, moist), Coq Au Vin (leg a little dry oddly but breast very moist, truffle not overwhelming). No space for dessert. I also very much enjoyed my Terroir cocktail - refreshing and not overly sweet. Very solid meal but server just couldn't help himself he kept getting distracted -"i'll be right back" ended up being 5 minutes several times. He was overwhlemed and couldn't manage time making our evening less than stellar. Unfortunate."

  • "Was our first time at RN74, although they forgot one of our appetizers, and we felt that the Pinot Noir (CA) selection was way overpriced for the quality,, the food was good but not extraordinary and as other reviewers mentioned plenty of other restaurants in SF in the same quality range but less expensive."

  • "... as well as under-portioned. We all expect sky-high prices here, but a little more food on the plates -- from appetizers through entrees -- would make me come here more often than I do."

  • "RN47 was still fabulous although it had been two years since I had visited. The food is delicious and inventively plated. The service is wonderful and the servers have an excellent knowledge of the menu. My colleague and I both had salads that came to the table looking like works' of art. They were as good as they looked. Then, she got the house made pasta and I got the Panini with squash blossoms. Both were quite a treat. I would highly recommend this restaurant for dinner or just enjoying a drink at the beautiful bar area."

  • "I have been to RN74 before, it was fine. I was excited to give it a go again with an out of town guest. We ordered the halibut and filet. Halibut was just ok - but the filet was disgusting. The meat had gone bad, mushy, and clearly inedible. How did this small fact escape any chef? It was so obvious to any person who had ever eaten steak - it resembled more of a seared pool of flesh. They took it away, we ordered a substitute- which took forever to come out, it was cheaper than the filet by 30 bucks and they charged us for it. Keep it classy RN74. This place is not only overpriced they let their food go bad, and try to pass it off for the top of the line. I will never be back here or any other Michael Mina chain for that matter. Good luck!"

  • "The food was delicious and Charles our server was amazing. I decided to go with a Pimms 74 cocktail which was sweet and refreshing. The best item for me was the entree, the chicken was savory and the sauce for the mac was incredible. The gazpacho was a real treat with a cool sweet taste complimented well with sliced almonds. The summer melon salad was good and I enjoyed the dehydrated watermelon in particular, but I'd pass on it next time. I'd pass on the duck wings next time as well. Finishing with the dessert cassis genoise was perfect, but I'm a sucker for passion fruit. The staff was very attentive and provided a sophisticated dining experience."

  • "The food was very good, especially the escargots as an appetizer. Service was better than I expected, only negative part was a big group next to us was noisy but everything else was awesome"

  • "I was really looking forward to a delicious lunch. I am serious about my food. I can not eat much so what I do eat has to be quality. We ordered the mushrooms to split and both my guest and I had the fried chicken open faced sandwich. The mushrooms were very tasty flavorful. Perfect size to split and leave room for the main meal. My chicken was juicy but the bread was over cooked burnt really too tough to eat. The avocado was not ripe and lacked flavor. I basically ate a couple of pieces of chicken off the top. Bummer not worth a second try."

  • "Really good, I read some reviews about the service being a bit slow, we thought the wait staff was terrific."

  • "The food is bland; ask for salt when you order, if you wait until your good comes you won't get it until your halfway through your meal."

  • "Even after reading reviews where they have slow service. our waiter seemed to forget about us and almost forgot to bring our entre. Food was good but it took forever to get our main course."

  • "Prepare to indulge! Perhaps that I was coming off of a cleanse, and usually try to be gluten free, but I ordered everything that had bread, cheese, or pasta in the title! Let me tell you, it was worth it! Portions are on the smaller side, which is great if you like to try a few bites of everything; and food is prepared as you order so some comes out quick- others a bit longer. Being in san francisco, all the veggies were of-the-season, and prepared in light butter that enhances their flavor. I would like to come back and order just an entree and perhaps sit at the bar. Bon Apetit!"

  • "This was our 1st visit to RN74, but with some good recommendations. The food was exquisite and the service was superior and friendly. Long term patrons already know the quality and range of the wines available. It was a total delight. We look forward to our next opportunity to come back."

  • "Our sommelier David was wonderful. He picked out some gems from the already incredible if substantial wine list. The food was excellent, particularly the pastrami style salmon and pork loin. Fabulous dining experience."

  • "Good food, though pricey. The crispy skinned snapper was a bit overdone. The melon straciatella salad was delightful. Dessert: French crullers were delicious. The wine list is all about Burgundy. You have the opportunity to sample some pricier options by the glass. I had a flight of 1999 Burgundian wines which was really nice. Waitstaff was very knowledgable and friendly, but the food and drinks were slow to come out."

  • "Our first time at this restaurant and our first time experiencing a Michael Mina property. We opted for the tasting menu with the premium wine pairing as we were celebrating. This dinner did not meet basic expectations mostly due to service HOWEVER, after writing to the general manager, he asked if we would consider dining with them again. We agreed and the experience-food, wine, and service exceeded our expectations. In addition, it is so rare to find a business that truly understands customer service with the ability to gracefully right a wrong. Our amazing dinner included croque madame gougere, green tomato gazpacho (to die for), marinated Kona Kampachi, Brentwood corn gnudi, seared local king salmon, and so much more. Highly recommended"

  • "Had dinner on June 7, 2014. I was solo and checked in upon arriving and indicated I could sit at the bar or at a table. Hostess stated bar was fine. Later I learned they classified me as a no show even after I checked with the hostess again (second time that evening) and was told all was OK. I spent roughly $175 that evening. Food was good. Service was great. Will not be back as they attempted to essentially screw me on my open table points and classify me as a no show. There is way too much competition to put up with this type of behavior."

  • "Great mixed drinks, but overpriced for such a small serving. Had a reservation and waited a long time (after the scheduled time) to be seated. Cost of valet is unacceptable; $10 seems more reasonable. Food was okay and food runner was good; taking note of another diner's allergy, but altogether overrated and with so many other great food options to choose from in SF, I'm not sure I'll return."

  • "The menu was very limited for a vegetarian. Being a chef myself and having had my own restaurant, I found this to be overpriced for what you got and the Salade Nicoise was really dreadful, tiny (even when I asked to make it a main course) - hardly anything like what I would have in France or the US. Not a good dessert menu and the glasses of wine were terribly expensive, far more than in France. Would not go there again "

  • "It could be a fluke because I've eaten here many times and it was. That said, they took the tempura mushrooms off the menu (big mistake) and the rest of the food was so bland it was practically tasteless. Both I and my dining companion had to ask for salt and pepper and were halfway through our meal before it arrived. I feel like the chef was afraid to use salt, which is fine with me (Tom Colicchio would say it isn't fine), then at least put salt on the table or bring it with the food! I probably won't go back. "

  • "Want to have a special elegant evening and spectacular food? RN 74 is for you. The pate was divine, the crispy red snapper was scruptous, sweetbreads were done to perfection even the salads were excellent. Think chicken is passe? Try RN 74's chicken!! It is a little bit of heaven. The wines are plentiful and exceptional. Don't skip dessert. The crullers are fantastic with creme anglaise. Our birthday guest, a 74 newbie, was blown away. The rest of us were not surprised but yet again exquisitely treated to one of the best dining experiences in San Francisco. "

  • "Plenty of old Bordeaux but we ended up (thanks to sommelier's recommendation) with a 1982 Haut Medoc. Delicious. Enjoyed it with pate, snails (both decent) and a lamb shank (excellent - v tasty and not over-rich), and roasted sweetbreads (best dish of the night). Portions have been trimmed in size, which good: still generous whereas they used to be too big. Good place for a fun date. The atmosphere is energetic rather than sweet: so, a place to laugh and talk rather than gaze lovingly into each other's eyes. Lots of fun!"

  • "Excellent food, but why so few California wines in the middle of wine country? I think French and Italian wines are fine, but what about a good representation of our state's great treasures - California wines? I was very unhappy with the supposed incredible wine list. "

  • "Took two clients here because of Michael Minna's reputation. Once our order was taken and ice tea and sodas were delivered, we never saw our server. My small glass of diet coke was mostly ice cubes and sat empty until I paid the bill. No one ever came by to see if we needed any refills or anything at all. Food was finally delivered after a long wait. I brought some clients here a few weeks ago for happy hour and not once did the bartenders offer any specials. I got the bill for the drinks and it was surprisingly expensive. Poor service, over-hyped and overrated. Really expected more from RN74."

  • "Go for the food, but be prepared that even if you are paying $500 for two for dinner the service is lackluster. In hindsight, we should have given the gratuity to the kitchen and not the server. This would have been a 5 star rating, but the service pulled down our experience. Here is my point: the food is outstanding, however the service will be the downfall of this restaurant. If I am paying $500 for two for dinner, I would expect a minimal amount of attention. The gratuity should have gone to the kitchen and not our server. Will be return, perhaps but only if someone else is suggesting."
