A word from RN74
Taking its name from the highway, Route Nationale 74, which runs directly through the Burgundy region of France, RN74 is a wine-centric French inspired restaurant.
RN74’s wine program, curated by Mina Group wine director and James Beard Award winning author Rajat Parr, focuses heavily on the greatest producers and regions of Burgundy. However, the well-balanced list also showcases international and domestic selections. RN74 has been awarded Wine Spectator’s highest honor, the “Grand Award” every year it has been eligible starting in 2010.
RN74’s menus are clearly inspired by the wine program; built on a foundation of regional French cuisine, yet market driven with refined, modern American influences. Executive Chef Adam Sobel, recently crowned “King of Porc” at Grand Cochon 555, brings an exciting flair and strong identity to the kitchen of RN74.

  • "Third time here, and it's gotten better every time. The meal was off the charts, and as expected, the wine list was tough to nail down a final choice (and that's a good thing!), but in the end all the selections we made were insanely good. It's a must go to place for foodies and wine lovers."

  • "I went back to RN74 for a business lunch. The mushroom appetizer tasted like marinated mushrooms from a jar. It took 45 minutes to get our entrees. The portions were tiny and the fish overcooked. All in all very overpriced for mediocre everything. Sorry RN74. We won't be back."

  • "We were really looking forward to this to this place since we have enjoyed other Michael Mena establishments in other cities. Our server was pretentious and it was very obvious that he wanted us to eat and turn over the table quickly. This is the type of place you want to go to for a business dinner, not a personal night out. Our steaks were not cooked properly and were stringy and had lots of gristle. I have had better steaks at Texas Roadhouse. The steak came with plain, limp fries which were bland. Absolutley not what I expected after paying 53 bucks."

  • "Wife and I enjoyed the food here but the service was so bad I decided to skip going to Michael Mina restaurant reservation the following night. Wife had the Lamb which was excellent and I had the Halibut which was delicious. I think the focus of our waiter was to wait on tables ordering at least a bottle of wine. His demeanor approaching our table was very condescending and only took our order and delivered our drinks once. After that he was focused on the tables having a bottle of wine. Food good, service horrible and shared this with others that gave the same feedback. Being a former waiter and manager of a restaurant it must be the food the keeps peope coming because service like this, would not acceptable in other cities."

  • "In 30 years of eating at great restaurants in SF, last night's meal was one of the best ever. From start-to-finish, each course proved even better than its delicious description. A very intelligent waiter (also bi-lingual in English and French) suggested unusual and terrific wines with each course we chose. Perfect service - completely attentive without ever interrupting - a common problem even at fine restaurants. Food was fantastic - for a party of four, each person having three courses, hitting 12 home-runs tells you something about the consistency of the offerings. It was our first time here, but we will return - soon."

  • "It was a pleasant experience. The wine list is just amazing and frankly the food is also vere good as well. We were afraid oft being desapointed with the food but it was so good! The only thing to be fixed is the lounge music that doesn't fit with the diner."

  • "Recent lunch at RN74, the food shone more than I had remembered. smoked salmon tartare--killer. pork cutlet with peaches, lovely. nice service, well done all around."

  • "Chefs menu with wine pairing was outstanding. I only wish it was less expensive. Service was perfectly choreographed."

  • "I've been going to RN74 since they opened, and recently the food quality has taken a major dive downhill. It's not "bad", but certainly no longer up to par considering the price. Disappointing experience. Service was somewhat slow, but polite."

  • "Love the atmosphere, the unusually well curated French wine list, and - of course - the food!"

  • "We were very disappointed as we had originally gone to this restaurant when we were last in San Francisco a couple years ago after finding it in "Wine Spectator"and had a great experience. We really felt the service has slipped and would not be keen to go back."

  • "I finally was able to bring a great friend to RN74 after many attempts and his first time dining experience was nothing less than exceeding expectations. Our waiter was fun, friendly and recognized me from previous visits well over 6 months ago and welcomed me back and proceeded to make our outing fun and festive. The entire staff was attentive and the food was excellent. We'll be back."

  • "The idea is to have five or six items we all can split and taste the essence of the restaurant and the region of the country the restaurant focuses on. The restaurant was not busy when we arrived and made a reservation through Open Table and were seated promptly by a friendly hostess. The server arrived promptly and we gave drink order but the drinks took forever to be delivered. Bone marrow, steak tartare, roasted peppers, red pepper shrimp in a cast iron skillet and tuna tartare. All food was a journey that was rewarded. It took so long between the tapas items we missed our second reservation. We felt we were held hostage and were begging to leave. Food was the saving grace. I would give it a second chance based on that"

  • "Naming a restaurant after a highway in a wine region of France lets you know that they probably know something about wine but the food is really the star!!! Try the duck wings "a l'orange" they are fantastic as was the lamb. Staff was excellent and very friendly. We will be back."

  • "Everything about this dinner was top notch with the exception of the Halibut. Nice mild flavor but it seemed to be steamed or poached and a bit tough. We will definitely be back!"

  • "I was warned by my "Michael Mina"restaurant-savvy-friends not to go here (after their experiences). Needless to say, my husband and I and our 22 year old daughters dined here anyway. We figured, its a Michael Mina restaurant, how bad can it be? Pretty bad. Service was unacceptably long. Sad. But even more sad that our meals were at best mediocre. My husband's filet mignon was dry and overcooked. We are used to pay these kinds of very high prices (too high) but we usually get what we paid for. Not hear. You couldn't pay me to eat here again. Michael Mina, what is going on?"

  • "I have loved RN74 in the past the level of service and food has dropped drastically. The steak tar tar lacked flavor and they brought the mussels cold without the frites. It was not the dining experience I had in the past and was disappointing to a foodie and an old fan of the restaurant."

  • "We went in for lunch on a Friday. It took over an hour to get our entrees. We had to ask a nearby waiter to check on our entrees and let him know we had a plain to catch. 10 minutes later, the food came out (no one came to give us an "update" on timing after our request). No one checked-in with us to see how our meal was. We also had to follow-up with another waiter to get our check. The runners seemed to be working very hard but not sure who our waiter even was. Very dissapointing."

  • "This was the worse service I have encountered in years at a high end restaurant."

  • "They need to hire more bar tenders/waiters & also remember they are in the service industry. Everyone has an attitude problem, acts bothered when you ask for something and they think they are in NY or Paris but they're NOT! I went for a business lunch and we let them know we had to be at a 1:00 meeting. Our food order went it at 12:15 and didn't arrive until 12:55. Lunch should not ever take 40 minutes to be served! Please let this restaurant know their service is terrible! Michael Minna?"

  • "I have always enjoyed Michael Mina restaurants but this one has lost it's way, the food was borderline awful and the service was inconsistent and not at all attentive. I had the New York Strip and have been more impressed at Sizzler than I was by this piece of meat, the accompanying fries were so salty I barely touched them. I had enjoyed meals here in the past and heard it had gone downhill but recovered again - not enough for me - 3 people $360 including a bottle of Pinot and we overpaid by $200"

  • "•Food: menu almost never changes; evolved into a bistro style with current chef. Food OK but nothing to write home about. FFries really good, mussels so overcooked that the insides had shrunken up to nothing; sauce insipid and under seasoned, no complexity just butter; plate hot contents lukewarm. Wine portions expensive and a skimpy 2 oz pour if that much. •Service: alternatively obsequious or absent. Had to wait so long for a second glass of wine (ordered 3 times from 3 different waiters) that we had to stop eating to wait for it. One waiter commented on our private conversation (!) •only go there as a last resort. what could be great local spot to be frequented is rarely visited and then almost always disappointing"

  • "This is the kind of restaurant I like: very nicely executed bistro fare and special attention to wine reflected on the great variety of options (mainly Burgundy). To make it perfect, a less anxious service and lower wine prices would be recommended. In any case, a place to go back for sure."

  • "Was our first time at RN74, although they forgot one of our appetizers, and we felt that the Pinot Noir (CA) selection was way overpriced for the quality,, the food was good but not extraordinary and as other reviewers mentioned plenty of other restaurants in SF in the same quality range but less expensive."

  • "I have been to RN74 before, it was fine. I was excited to give it a go again with an out of town guest. We ordered the halibut and filet. Halibut was just ok - but the filet was disgusting. The meat had gone bad, mushy, and clearly inedible. How did this small fact escape any chef? It was so obvious to any person who had ever eaten steak - it resembled more of a seared pool of flesh. They took it away, we ordered a substitute- which took forever to come out, it was cheaper than the filet by 30 bucks and they charged us for it. Keep it classy RN74. This place is not only overpriced they let their food go bad, and try to pass it off for the top of the line. I will never be back here or any other Michael Mina chain for that matter. Good luck!"

  • "... as well as under-portioned. We all expect sky-high prices here, but a little more food on the plates -- from appetizers through entrees -- would make me come here more often than I do."

  • "The food was delicious and Charles our server was amazing. I decided to go with a Pimms 74 cocktail which was sweet and refreshing. The best item for me was the entree, the chicken was savory and the sauce for the mac was incredible. The gazpacho was a real treat with a cool sweet taste complimented well with sliced almonds. The summer melon salad was good and I enjoyed the dehydrated watermelon in particular, but I'd pass on it next time. I'd pass on the duck wings next time as well. Finishing with the dessert cassis genoise was perfect, but I'm a sucker for passion fruit. The staff was very attentive and provided a sophisticated dining experience."

  • "RN 74 has a great wine bar, and terrific service. The menu, however, seems to be somewhat limited and lacks diversity. Some of the choices are not that inviting and there were not many entrees that I found appealing. It is on expensive side so my expectations are higher. Great waiter and enjoyed the wine list and many choices."

  • "RN47 was still fabulous although it had been two years since I had visited. The food is delicious and inventively plated. The service is wonderful and the servers have an excellent knowledge of the menu. My colleague and I both had salads that came to the table looking like works' of art. They were as good as they looked. Then, she got the house made pasta and I got the Panini with squash blossoms. Both were quite a treat. I would highly recommend this restaurant for dinner or just enjoying a drink at the beautiful bar area."

  • "I was really looking forward to a delicious lunch. I am serious about my food. I can not eat much so what I do eat has to be quality. We ordered the mushrooms to split and both my guest and I had the fried chicken open faced sandwich. The mushrooms were very tasty flavorful. Perfect size to split and leave room for the main meal. My chicken was juicy but the bread was over cooked burnt really too tough to eat. The avocado was not ripe and lacked flavor. I basically ate a couple of pieces of chicken off the top. Bummer not worth a second try."

  • "Food well prepared, creative well presented. Prices on expensive side but quality food. Menu - Regional Oysters (good and meaty), Squash Blossom panini (hot, not oily, mint pesto nice paring and cuts richness), Asparagus Burrata (was OK, needed salt, beautiful presentation), Halibut (rich, perfectly cooked, moist), Coq Au Vin (leg a little dry oddly but breast very moist, truffle not overwhelming). No space for dessert. I also very much enjoyed my Terroir cocktail - refreshing and not overly sweet. Very solid meal but server just couldn't help himself he kept getting distracted -"i'll be right back" ended up being 5 minutes several times. He was overwhlemed and couldn't manage time making our evening less than stellar. Unfortunate."

  • "Prepare to indulge! Perhaps that I was coming off of a cleanse, and usually try to be gluten free, but I ordered everything that had bread, cheese, or pasta in the title! Let me tell you, it was worth it! Portions are on the smaller side, which is great if you like to try a few bites of everything; and food is prepared as you order so some comes out quick- others a bit longer. Being in san francisco, all the veggies were of-the-season, and prepared in light butter that enhances their flavor. I would like to come back and order just an entree and perhaps sit at the bar. Bon Apetit!"
