RN74another great eveningThis is a great place for all sorts of events - a personal dinner for two or a whole group. This time I was there on business - with a foreign visitor from a very different culture. Staff was so accommodating to his special/unique needs, even diners at adjacent tables were very polite and accommodating. It is a very loud place, but in a good way - everyone having a great time, so it's more people buzz than just blasting music. While this time wasn't meant to be a test, it passed with flying colors, so I can vouch for it being a great place for just about any purpose/group dinner out, not just for the usual date or fun group.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMI was really looking forwardI was really looking forward to lunch at RN74 because the Croque Madame, of which I had fond memories, was back on the memory. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good this time as it was the last time I had it. However, the vanilla custard, which was sort of a deconstructed creme brulee, was outstanding. Our waiter was very personable and took great care of us. The Tuna Cruso was to die for, the mushroom pasta paired beautifully with the Burgundy, and the wine list was beyond approach. We even had the opportunity to chat it up wity Raj their Sommelier, a man after my own heart, or should I say he helps me with my Burgundy addiction.

The restaurant asked what the occasion was and unexpectedly provided us with a bit of champagne to celebrate. Overall the staff was very friendly and helped us with choosing an excellent wine for dinner as well. I could not be critical of one thing at this restaurant. It wasn't cheap, but great food in San Francisco and such good service............what do you expect?
The food was great. Waiting staff who knew what they were talking about, weren't pretentious and knew about the wines and food. The lighting and the setting were excellent. Each dish memorable visually and for taste. We had the beets and burrata, grilled squid, halibut,pork belly, coffee eclair and, of course, the beignets. No clear favorite, although the grilled squid tastes are still fresh on our palette.

I had their sautéed scallops, cauliflower and gnocchi main. The cauliflower was steam table mush and the gnocchi -- also cooked long before service -- were largely tasteless. The scallops (3 of them, for $32) were properly cooked but not well seasoned. Maybe the problem was that I ate early on a Monday night before catching a red eye to the East coast. There are great restaurants in San Francisco. A truly extensive wine list featured French mainstays at high prices, but the slightly more obscure wines were under-represented. The surprisingly informal but truly knowledgeable sommelier saved the day by directing me to a separate section of special picks.
The bone marrow appetizer was very good, although the gremolata over-represented and the "bacon marmalade" too crumbly and hard to work with. The octupus first course was excellent; balanced flavors and great textures. My wagyu main was rich and delicious and my dining companion's duck was cooked and sauced perfectly.

RN74 appealed to the modern French cuisine, with a great wine list to boot. I also recall it being a great place for groups as there is a huge table in the back for larger groups. The night we went, which we thought was going to be a slow night, our neighbor's conversation sort of spilled into our conversation, so noise was a small issue for us. From the looks of it, it's a quiet, romantic eatery, but due to the bar that takes up 1/3 of the restaurant, the noise level is usually pretty loud.
