A word from RN74
Taking its name from the highway, Route Nationale 74, which runs directly through the Burgundy region of France, RN74 is a wine-centric French inspired restaurant.
RN74’s wine program, curated by Mina Group wine director and James Beard Award winning author Rajat Parr, focuses heavily on the greatest producers and regions of Burgundy. However, the well-balanced list also showcases international and domestic selections. RN74 has been awarded Wine Spectator’s highest honor, the “Grand Award” every year it has been eligible starting in 2010.
RN74’s menus are clearly inspired by the wine program; built on a foundation of regional French cuisine, yet market driven with refined, modern American influences. Executive Chef Adam Sobel, recently crowned “King of Porc” at Grand Cochon 555, brings an exciting flair and strong identity to the kitchen of RN74.

Food is good, but not great. Wine is extremely expensive. Special champagne offered was $50 a glass and white truffles with pasta was $125. Waiter tried to sell them both pretty hard which felt a bit forced/awkward. For me, there are many better restaurants in town for a much more reasonable tab.

Our first visit to RN in over 6 months. It is always a treat. The food is fabulous. The wine list unbelievable and the service wonderful. We particularly enjoyed the pork loin and the Brussels sprout salad. What else can we say? One of the best restaurants anywhere !

I was interested by the idea of traveling along RN74 and loved the décor, which evokes a train station, inviting you to try every wine along the road. The cocktail list was interesting and the bar tender very creative is making special and tasty ones for you. However, the food menu was a bit disappointing. I actually preferred the appetizers and table fares (notably the soufflé with its "sauce au vin jaune") to the main course and desert. The sea bass was a bit blend and expensive for what it was. The texture of the raspberry clafoutis was closer to a "financier" (not surprisingly as it comes in a very thin dish), which could have been still yummy if it had the nutty flavor of the financier. Here, it lacked both moisture and flavor.

1982 Dominique. Lovely. Food has come up a notch, too, over the last year or so. Portions smaller, more manageable. Had squab stuffed with chicken and truffle mousse. But it is the wine list I come for. Be prepared to pay up, though. Expensive wines (but sold at very fair prices given the quality.) best wine list in the city. By far.

Our dinning experience was French with a Cali-Nouveau twist and very well done. It is hard to be "different" in SF and often restaurants just land at "weird" instead. RN74 was the opposite - unexpected, interesting, subtle and not overstated variations on traditional French cuisine. A real treat. Wait staff was outstanding.

We went to RN74 for the first time to celebrate my wife's birthday, but the food was not all that special. Not bad, just not outstanding or memorable. We really enjoyed the decor--including the "train schedule" list of wine specials--and our waiter was engaging and fun, but we headed elsewhere for dessert.

My wife and I are gluten-free. There were adequate choices available to us, but we were simply not wowed by anything we ate. The Moroccan chicken and sunchoke char were good, but not special. The server was friendly and informative, but he did not spend enough time at our table, there were long stretches of time when we were left waiting to make a simple request. Still, the service was OK. I have a serious complaint with the seating for two. They placed us with two other diners to our right, and two to our left, only a few feet away. This seems common in too many restaurants, and I find it unacceptable. I do not want to listen intimately to every word spoken on both sides of me, nor do I want my conversation to bother my neighbors.

Overall, great food, and I will go back there again - but not if I am in a rush. There were 6 of us, and we were all very happy with the food itself. The big issue we had was that an hour was not enough to do the appetizer/salad and the main course. Even after we told them that we had a hard stop, the main courses literally showed up after we had already paid the bill and were running out for our client meeting. We were all hungry after cross-continental flights, so we wolfed down in 2 minutes what we could, but we left hungry, and it wasn't a great experience - particularly since we had already told them about our time constraints up front.

While in SF, we wanted to try a Michael Mina restaurant so picked RN74. I had read the reviews about being loud but thought "how bad could it be?". We were in a corner of the restaurant that was half full - empty tables on either side of us but we still couldn't hear each other across the table. The waiter was very attentive but the wine was extremely overly priced. Seriously - $40-60 for a glass? The food was well prepared and visually appealing. But overall, a poor value for the money spent. Just down the street is Salt House - similar menu and a much better environment and price.

Anyone who enjoys French cooking and French Burgundies, will really enjoy this restaurant. The Duck pate is to die for, and the wine( expensive as expected) is unmatched in the US. This place is definitely worth a trip and is underrated by local reviewers. I go there anytime I am in San Francisco and will continue to do so. Bravo

We went on a Thursday night. The bar was a little too packed with only 1 bartender so while the drinks and wine were good -- service was slow albeit pleasant. Dining in the restaurant, the food was delicious for the most past. I felt the oysters could use some more dressing although tasted fresh and creamy. The pumpkin gnocchi was fantastic. I got the filet which was amazing. My husband got the chicken which was very tasty with interesting seasonings and vegetables. They carry Volney which is a favorite French wine, but quite the price tag to match.

while i was looking forward to my first experience at RN74, i was disappointed in both food and service. There were long pauses between courses, and not much attentiveness. this was a business lunch - i had the pastrami sandwich, tough and impossible to eat with any sense of manners. another guest had same issue with the lamb burger. even an accidental broken pitcher of water didn't pique their interest, rather just a perfunctory apology. while i've had wonderful experiences at other Mina restaurants, i would not return or recommend this one.

I love French food, and French wine even more, so I was excited to find this restaurant convenient to the fiinancial district. With that said, the food was very good (escargot to start and duck fo rthe entree), the service was compitent, and the atmosphere was energetic. The wine list was great; however, very overpriced. I suppose that's the price one has to pay for foreign wine in northern California.

Loved almost everything about RN74. Service was outstanding: attentive, friendly, knowledgeable, but not pushy. We returned a glass of wine without question, our waiter wanted honest feedback, etc. We had the tasting menu. For the price, I thought the items were at the B to B+ level, not A level which the pricing would suggest. Best item on tasting menu was Kampachi, worst was an intermezzo of compressed watermelon and meringue. Strange combo with disproportionately enormous portion of meringue. Honestly, pretty yucky. Overall, was a really awesome evening. Wouldn't recommend tasting menu.

Booked a table for a large party and had to increase from 11 to 13 ppl. Seating was moved from 8:15 to 8:45, but hostess said we'd probably be seated closer to 8:30 if we arrived early, and guaranteed 8:45. We weren't seated until 9:30, and we're given a table in the adjacent event space, where a reception was winding down. Folding tables were being taken down and dropped to the floor, workers were yelling back and forth, and the waiter made a snide comment when I asked him about moving in to the main dining room. I've eaten here before and the food is consistently excellent, but we've also been treated as though it's a privilege to eat here. Sorry, too many better options in SF. Won't make this $3000 mistake again.

We ordered 4 appetizers & 1 entrée. Entree was very delicious (halibut with bouillabaisse). Only 1 of appetizers was good - the rest lacking in an extra umph. Brussels sprout salad was raw so I missed the carmelization, but also fairly bland. Tuna crudo needed way more flavor, especially an acidic component. The cod beignets were ok. The beef tartare Vietnamese style was very good. Overall, though service excellent, it was difficult to hear each other on a busy Saturday night, and didn't feel like the meal was worth $120/person (with wine). There wasn't anything special or extra attention to detail. My husband said the bathroom was a mess, a bad sign of a restaurant's effort.

These folks are trying very hard to justify their prices. We ordered several appetizers, salads, entrees and wine by the glass. The result was an okay meal, with the cheese plate as the only standout. Both wines were slightly off examples of their varietals --- one was so odd we couldn't decide if it was or was not corked. Here's what but this experience squarely in the negative: Of three restrooms, two were out of order. The working restroom was filthy. The floor around the toilet was soaked. Even the wall was splattered. I let the hostess know, and her reaction was, essentially, "So?" We should have just left after that, in retrospect.

I really liked the atmosphere. However the service was not very good. The waiter disappeared twice for what seemed like half hour periods of time and I had to ask other waiters to track him down. The food tasted fine and was presented very nicely. The fondue appetizer was tasty and filling, but the main courses were chinsey with very little actual main course surrounded by lots of garnish. The two lamb slices on the lamb entree were about the size of two saltine crackers. No joke. This restaurant was highly recommended to me by a coworker, so maybe it was an off night at RN74.

I chose this restaurant because of Michael Mina's reputation. Modeled after a train station, the French railway feel is pretty cool. There is a ticker board that once served to announce train arrivals and departures that now offers remnant bottles of wine. Their list is large & mostly French. I was stunned to find a $10,000 bottle of wine. The food was magnificent & we were not disappointed! I had the Marinated Heirloom Tomatoes, which were delectable. Hubby had the Summer Melon & Burrata Salad, a delicious combo of sweet & salty fruit & cheese. For dinner, I had the special, Moroccan Chicken. My husband chose the Duo of Sonoma Lamb. We enjoyed our food and the ambience.

We tried to celebrate our 25th anniversary here. The waiter told us when we asked for martinis that they were all out of most vodka. My wife had medallions of pork which she described as "hockey pucks" and I had halibut which was ok but tasteless. The tomato soup was described as like Gazpacho but it had pieces of lettuce and shrimp with their shells on in it. Bread was cold and dry. Wines were $45 - $50 for a half-glass. Overall bill for two: $198.00. Service was slow. The place was very dark, and somewhat noisy. The waiter asked me if I was "happy" when he brought the fish; not sure if this was attempt at humor or sarcasm. By contrast we ate at Zuni Cafe the night before and it was terrific, and much less expensive.
