A word from RN74
Named after Route National 74, the major thoroughfare passing through the heart of France’s Burgundy region, RN74 is a San Francisco urban wine bar and restaurant by Michael Mina, Rajat Parr and Adam Sobel featuring modern interpretations of refined American and regional French cuisine with a world-class wine list highlighting the Burgundy region of France. The wine bar setting is relaxed and social, with dishes presented in a simple, uncomplicated manner, creating a comfortable environment for enjoying a glass of wine from an extensive by-the-glass list. In the restaurant, a menu designed to pair perfectly with the extensive wine list offers guests the opportunity to mix and match and create their own unique gustatory experience.   • "Having just moved into the Millennium upstairs I was looking forward to my first dinner at RN74. I will shortcut the review by saying the food was below average for all courses and the waitress was very poor. She wasn't around our table much over the course of the evening and when she was she was awkward and not very helpful. We must have waited for over 30 minutes between the appetizers and the entree service. There were two of us and the review is unanimous on all counts. How disappointing. Larry "

  • "Reservation made 1 month prior to celebrate our wedding (dinner with friends). We arrived 15 minutes ahead of schedule and was told the table was just about ready. 20 minutes AFTER our scheduled reservation time, and now 35 minutes after arriving, I approached the hostess who told me the table was ready but she forgot about us. It then took about 30 minutes to get menus, and we were met by 2 sassy employees who need a lesson in customer service. The best quote of the night came from the manager, "We just assumed..." WHOA - I don't know who taught you customer service, but NEVER assume anything about your guests. The communication was horrible, the experience was awful. The food way overpriced. The staff made a special occasion awful."

  • "The real thing about this restaurant is the wine list, which has lots of old bottles of burgundy, bordeaux, rhone as well as "New World" wines. The food has always been hearty. But it has changed somewhat over the past year. Portions are now smaller - that is a good thing as they used to be unmanagebly large. So, on the recent tip, we had chicken liver pate, cheese souffle to share, followed by sweetbread-stuffed veal (delicious, well-seasoned) and halibut (light and citrusy). We were also brought a sample of the lamb shanks ( nice and sticky.) The wine - a couple of glasses of rise champagne and a 1989 Bordeaux. Its a place for indulgence."

  • "Attractive, lively surroundings with an amazing but mostly very expensive wine list. Our experience may be a function of the dishes we ordered. Started with warm olive appetizer, which was very disappointing. The olives had virtually no flavor, no evidence of seasoning. Frisee salad with poached egg was the definite high point--a delicious and satisfying dish. We then had 2 different cuts of steak frites, which was a very mixed experience. The beef itself was excellent and cooked to order but was encased in a rather overwhelming salt crust that really diminished the experience. We ended the meal with profiteroles, which were very tasty but somewhat lacking in creativity. Would recommend but with some hesitation."

  • "We stumbled upon RN74 while visiting San Francisco and it made our trip! The food and wine were incredible. I had the "Roasted Mary's Chicken Breast" and my husband had the Alaskan Halibut. We also sampled several appetizers and deserts and were amazed by all. The sommelier was keenly aware of what to recommend with each course. We would highly recommend this restaurant. It has EVERYTHING you could possibly want in a classy restaurant!"

  • "Key notes: 1) Food is excellent 2) Service is good 3) Corkage fee is very high (so the personal wines are not as welcome as we expected) - $35 for first two bottles (for each one), $70 for third, and then I think it will be even higher. 4) Overall, pretty good place to enjoy eating."

  • "Who doesn't want a great French bistro handy? RN74 is almost it, but fails on two counts. It is too expensive given the food quality; if it was cheaper, the food might have been a little more excusable. We had the spring vegetable salad. The greens seemed fresh, but the dressing and overall presentation wasn't tasty. A little soggy and not much taste from the dressing. The salmon tartare was a little cold and again the flavor wasn't there. I had the cassoulet. Best part was a piece of grilled toast soaked in butter. The dish itself was lacking in flavor. My friend had the small lobster risotto which was tasty. The wine ended up really pushing the meal cost north. I will try RN74 again to find the well prepared dishes."

  • "I was at RN74 for lunch. I ordered a Kale Salad, and the waiter asked if I would like an entree size (since that was going to be my entree). The regular kale salad was $16. When the bill came, the Kale Salad was $28!!! It was more expensive than any other entree. Sorry was all the waiter said - the price is the price. I wouldn't go back."

  • "The hostess was incredibly helpful and friendly. After that, it seemed as if everyone else who came to help us both at the bar or at our table was distracted. I know it was busy? But if we hesitated for a second, servers and bartenders would just walk away. 75% of my friends who came (we were a large group) are servers in Fine dining, so we respect the time and assistance of our servers. The server for example brought us the cheese plate, but didn't know what cheeses were on it. And we got no help with wine selection. However, our server was very sweet and friendly. I don't want to be a jerk, but this was my birthday dinner, and I guess I'd hoped for more."

  • "Server was very knowledgeable and food options were all interesting. There were 5 of us and we tried different entrees. Everyone thought their choice was a good one. We liked the interesting preparation combinations and the presentation as well. All thought it was a good decision to go there and would go again. Most had been there for dinner but not during lunchtime.We went early and at 11:30a there were only a few tables taken. By the time we left, there was only one table available. A lot of well heeled business people filled the room. If the service wasn't efficient, I don't think as many would be there at the prime lunch hour - as for us it seemed to go like clockwork."

  • "A lot of fun at RN74. My second time there, and the service is always fantastic - never an empty glass, never a dirty table, nothing. There's a little to be said about the spacing of the tables - you end up overhearing every piece of conversation around you, because the dining sets are so close together. It's important to get as many customers seated at restaurants like these, but if I wanted a community meal, I'd probably choose somewhere else. The good news is that the people around you are also food-lovers and enthusiastic about wines and meals, so you'll like them. Especially if you're the kind of person who will be dining at RN74."

The service was appallingly slow. It took at least an hour to get our appetizers. Once the appetizers came out, the service picked up."

  • "The crispy brussels sprouts were excellent - crispy with a slightly sweet sauce that was the perfect complement to the sprouts. I'd order it again. I shared the sprouts and the octopus appetizer with my adventurous dining companion. Octopus was very tasty and tender. I had the chicken tartine - an open-faced sandwich - sort of a fancy chicken salad but served on a thick and crispy slice of bread that soaked up the delicious flavors of the mango chutney, chicken, and yoghurt sauce. Too bad I was too full to eat all the bread."

  • "The food is great. The Sunday 3 course special tasting menu was very nice and the wine selection impressive, The only thing is the service on a Sunday night. The hostess does not give you the Sunday evening tasting menu, the waiter when asked for it only gives you one to share, the waiter can't answer any questions about the wine and the somm does not come to the table to explain so you're stuck with a waiter who keeps on repeating that the wine is 'floral', Not great for a Michael Minna restaurant. We'll come back though as we like the food."

  • "My wife and I fell in love with this restaurant several years ago and have had fabulous meals there three times prior to this visit. Discovering a restaurant with such a fantastic wine list whose food was also outstanding felt like hitting the lottery. The original chef, Michelle Retallack, was a revelation -- deftly blending largely locally sourced ingredients into a kind of Northwest-French Bistro fusion that was both delicious and tremendously wine friendly. Sadly, on February 19, 2014 the food (presumably now under the direction of Chef Adam Sobel) was absolutely nowhere near the quality we had experienced previously. My black truffle risotto was inedible, my wife's chicken overcooked and my daughter's pasta overcooked and blah."

  • "We were looking forward to our dinner at RN74 based on compliments from friends who had dined there. On their website, they advertise a Sunday night special of $39 3 course dinner with $30 wine. Apparently not available on our Sunday night dinner. No worries, still excited about our dinner. Was let down when i had a question about their special wine selection. We were told by our very inexperienced waiter that he only knew about the wines by the glass, but would send the sommelier over to discuss. After waiting some time we were told by another waiter that the sommelier was busy but he would try and answer our questions. He actually did a fine job but we were a little surprised by this exchange. Other than that, food was very good."

It's tough to find a reasonably priced bottle of wine at RN, but their list is sensational. Everything was much improved from our previous visits. We're delighted to have another consistently great restaurant within walking distance of our home."

  • "Had a wonderful experience at RN74. After hearing about it from numerous sources (including Somm) i had to try it. My gf and i celebrated our anniversary there. Although i stated on my reservation that we were celebrating, they didnt do anything "special" for us luke a lot of other places do but that did not detract from a great meal. I highly recommend the brussel sprouts for an appetizer and the chicken for dinner. The food pairs very nicely with their fantastic wine selection. We tasted by the glass so we can try more. I highly recommend."
