A word from RM Champagne Salon
Opening August 2, 2012

RM, simply put, is Grower Champagne. The designation RM is derived from the French wine Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system’s classification of Champagne Houses; Récoltants Manipulants (RM), signifies an artisanal farmer who bottles his own wine. Celebrating this passion and care, the salon will pay homage to these growers that rely solely on fruit from their own vineyards with inherently distinct terroir. Bringing a balance of knowledge and passion that will be an enriching testament to Chicago’s forward-thinking wine community, Wagner will tailor an obsessively curated portfolio, which will feature a large selection of estate-grown wines from these vignerons who are intensively involved from bud-break to bottling.Continued

  • "Food, drinks, service all great. All noteworthy in themselves, could go on about them-- but the cherry on top of this place is the location. This gorgeous restaurant/bar is located in a back alley that you would never find unless you already knew about it. Take friends or whoever there and expect them to be nothing but impressed. Every. Time. Great place to have in the back pocket, whether for a drinks or a full meal. Have been 3 times now and will definitely be back. "

  • "I went to RM before a special occasion for drinks and appetizers. Dealt nice selection of menu items and a great atmosphere to drink champagne before a fun event. Drinks were around the price point one would expect - $10-15/glass and a range of price points for bottles. They had a nice selection of wines by the glass and it would be great if they added more glasses of sparkling wines or wine flights. Would definitely go back!"

  • "I love rm champagne salon. They pay attention to details. Amazing steak frites and dessert case. Fantastic ambiance."

  • "I got the mushroom crepe (can't remember the exact name) for an appetizer and it was delish!! I got the eggplant tartine and it was also very good! For dessert we did a few of the small bites- the hazelnut truffle and almond lolipop were amazing! Overall, awesome food and cool ambiance. We will go back- especially when it gets nice out because the outdoor patio looked amazing!"

• "There's a lot to love about RM Champagne - the amazing wine selection and chef's selection cheeses come to mind (cheese portions are SO small, though) - but the decor is what's truly memorable. From the gallery walls on exposed brick inside to the lovely outdoor seating that feels like you're far away from city life, just about every diner will want to pack up and move in ... or at least use it as design inspiration. Small desserts are very pretty, but overpriced, much like most of the menu. It's a good spot for a splurge, though. I come here often with my girlfriends, so my only wish is that there were even more sharing options on the menu."

  • "I thoroughly enjoy RM - this was my third visit here in fact. While I have no complaints about the actual dining experience or food, the experience immediately after dinner left a sour taste in my mouth. My parents had valeted their car and when we went to get it, the valet guy brought the wrong car at first. He figured out which car was ours, and we drove to Cadillac Palace for a show. However, no sooner had we arrived did I receive a call from RM. Apparently they thought the keys to the wrong car the valet had brought us originally were in fact in our car. It put a damper on the rest of our evening as I was fielding text messages and calls, only to learn the keys were in the original car!"

  • "This was the first time at RM Champagne Salon, and I was more than happy with the experience! It was smaller inside than I expected, which made it slightly louder, but still easy to carry on conversations. The smaller dining room was intimate and cozy, which is rare!! You can tell that the focus is on the quality of the experience and not pure volume in an oversized space. The menu had a great assortment of options and everything was delicious! The wine list was not intimidating, offering a balanced variety of options with great vineyards. The service was perfect from start to finish! Our server was Fallyn and she was exactly what you would hope for!! Attentive, pleasant, knowledgable without being overbearing. This is one to recommend!!!"

  • "loved the ambiance of the whole restaurant. i had the RM 75 and then a couple glasses of sparkling rose. we ordered a few things and shared them so that we could taste everything. we started with the quinoa and roasted vegetable salad and shrimp cocktail. the salad was amazing (even for a salad). Shrimp cocktail was pretty standard, but I loved how fresh the jumbo shrimp were. Then we had the steak frites (OMG) and the mac and cheese (OMGOMG). the steak was tender and juicy and well seasoned. the FRIES. the fries were PERFECT. salty and crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. the mac and cheese was amazing......so rich and creamy. i was way too full to even try the deserts but they looked so good. next time we will get them!"

  • "We went to the restaurant for our 25th wedding anniversary looking for something different and romantic. Beware there is no address on the street and you have to weave your way back through an alley. It looks like there is great outdoor space for the summer. The staff confirmed our wedding anniversary and seated us at a lovely table by the wood burning fireplace. The food was interesting, but not overly memorable. Drink menu was interesting and tasty. Good select of cheeses, but portions were extremely small. I probably wouldn't return for dinner, but would consider sitting outside for a drink and appetizers. As a side note, there were a number of very interesting restaurants we passed on our walk from the EL!"

  • "We found this great little Champagne bar in Chicago and it was good. Nice selection of bubblies. The bartender, Mia, was fantastic, one of the best I have come across in Chicago during my travels."

  • "My husband I went the other night for our one year anniversary. We were put at a two top in between two groups of four women. We felt very cramped and couldn't hear each other at all. We told the waitress that we were celebrating our anniversary and we felt it was too loud. They were out of the filet and the hanger steak, which was all I wanted so I was disappointed. I felt like since it was our anniversary and we complained about not hearing each other, and the fact that they were out of both types of steak, that our waitress would at least offer us a dessert or something but she didn't offer us anything. She didn't seem very sympathetic at all. It was an expensive night for not a great experience."

  • "We went for drinks after dinner on my birthday. I would have expected a longer list of champagne cocktails in addition to the sparkling wine list. The music was way too loud for a quiet Tuesday night with the bar seats empty and tables filled with couples or girls night out . And the music selection did not fit the ambience -- I would have expected more classic selections (jazz. blues, standards, french) to fit the casually elegant french vibe."

  • "My wife and I had a great dinner here. Started with the salmon tartare app and beets salad, which were both very good. My wife got the trout and I got the steak and again both were terrific dishes and well cooked. The service was spot on throughout the dinner. We got 6 desserts that were small and fun. It was nice they have a wood burning fireplace to add to the ambience. From what I could tell no tables were touching and right on top of each other so that you can actually have private conversations. Love that we found this place in our neighborhood."

  • "A cozier space than I expected. We had the mushroom tart flambee, salmon tartare, roast chicken, fried oysters. Food well executed if not exceptional. Lyonnaise salad needed salt. Tartare a little bland. Designer cocktails and cremant were great. Thumping bass music seemed a little loud at first. Our server was very good, as well as the bussers. Needed to use light from phone to read the menus."

  • "We had a wonderful meal with a waitress that was outstanding, after we arrived 3 hours after our reservation time, thanks to a horrendous travel day of canceled flights and lost bags. Food was great, wine list and beer list very impressive."

  • "My boyfriend and I dined at RM Champagne Salon on New Year's Eve before heading to a party around the corner from the restaurant. We wanted to try someplace new but I sort of wish that we had gone to one of our West Loop staples. The menu was extremely limited but we decided on the scallop and the duck breast entrees. We also had oysters to start. All of the food was good but it was nothing outstanding for the price. The desserts were definitely the highlight for me, but again, nothing special. As for the service, our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and very helpful. She and the other waitstaff did seem to hover though. Literally the second we finished our oysters, someone was at our table clearing the plates. Overall, just ok."

  • "Candle-lit, delicious bites (literally) and excellent drinks down a mysterious alley. This is our favorite romantic date spot in Chicago."

  • "Brunch at RM is AMAZING!! You order your eggs when you are seated and they are made to order and the rest is the nicest buffet I've ever dined at! Lox and bagels, pastries, a brussels sprouts and potato salad, sausage and bacon that is TO DIE FOR, elegant potatoes, and my personal favorite - the french toast/brioche with apples. I had a mimosa, which was classic and perfect, and my boyfriend had a bloody mary, which was spicy from the real horseradish. I also tried the holiday champagne cocktail with rosemary and was just as thrilled with that. Our only complaint was that our coffee was not kept warm and refilled as we did not see our waitress regularly. Overall, a delightful brunch that I will bring lots of friends back to!!"

  • "This is a great place for drinks and dessert after dinner. Since the scene is about 80% women, it is obvious women love this spot, it is romantic, and a great place to take a first date. It has a Shabby Chic feel, great drinks, good service, and the fireplace adds just the right touch to the ambiance. I have been here on couples dates with my wife a few times, and one thing I was disappointed in was they did away with their cocktail menu that separated drinks by type of alcohol and shaken/stirred/on ice. As a guy, I loved it and was looking forward to a few drinks on the menu, but they didn't have it anymore. I can't take that away from RM though. They had their reasons and it is still a great place."

  • "RM is so cute, tucked away down an alley. When you come around the corner and look into the windows, it is very welcoming and cozy on a dark night. The fireplace was glowing -- with real logs! -- and the wait staff couldn't have been nicer. The food was equally as amazing. So many choices, too little room! Lovely choices of wine and champagne by the glass. I can't wait to return."

  • "Went here for Sunday brunch. It was just alright. I definitely wouldn't pay $24 for that buffet again its mainly pastries. Therefore, you eat a lot of bread! Just thought it was all around over priced for what you get. There are better brunch places in the city. It is very nicely decorated and you do feel like you are somewhere in Europe instead of Chicago."

  • "We did not eat dinner, but had a late reservation for drinks and dessert. We arrived early and grabbed a spot in the bar, which was fine! The staff was so nice, and very welcoming! No attitude here. We had the BEST waiter. The best!!! Each cocktail was more delicious that the next. Excellent champagne and sparkling. Cute delish little bites for dessert. A cozy, warm room with a blazing fire, felt like we were in a private club or home, which makes sense since its a little hard to find. Right in the heart of Vibrant place! Will definitely come back!!! Hip and fun, without the elite attitude."

  • "I recommend RM Champagne Salon to EVERYONE. I love love love their drink selection and they have a wonderful menu to compliment it. I've been here several times and love the scene. Come here with girlfriends, come here for a date - just find a reason to visit. Also, I love that the servers are super friendly and make great recommendations. Also, I've never had them interrupt or rush me when I've been catching up with friends."

  • "We came here for champagne and dessert after dinner reservations had already been made at another local place. We did save room for a cheese plate and the lobster deviled eggs, which were both delicious. The champagne list is fabulous, and the server was very helpful in choosing a selection to fit our group's taste. We also ordered drinks from the signature cocktail list. They were strong, well developed, and quite addicting. The fireplace made the place quite cozy on an unseasonable cold fall night. I would definitely recommend reservations. We cannot wait to come back this spring and summer to enjoy the large outdoor area."

  • "Great place in nice weather to sit outside for cocktails, but inside is a disappointment as well as the food. The interior is interesting, but for their cocktail prices, I would rather not sit indoors on outdoor plastic chairs. We could hardly talk, it was very loud. Had a flatbread with smoked salmon, suppose to have capers, no capers. Husband had flat iron steak...okay. I had mac & cheese which was gummy and seemed as if it had been reheated many times before. Come in the summer for cocktails outdoors. That space is amazing and romantic. Inside..not so much!"

  • "RM was great. We had a table for two in the corner and it was cozy and intimate. Our waitress, Lauren, was fantastic as it was our first time at RM she walked us through the menu with grace. We were not pushed to eat and leave quickly even though the place was packed. Wine /champagne was perfect and the decor was awesome. We will return soon as RM now ranks at the top of our "wine bar" list in Chicago."

  • "Beautiful but edgy decor, the restaurant had a modern french theme with an artsy modern twists. You walk through an alley lined with lights to reach the entrance. The lighting was lovely with the large fireplace filled with candles. Love the large selection of Champagnes and the menu was interesting and unusual with some French items you would expect, like Croque Monsier and Madeleines and lots of interesting new twists on French food like deviled eggs with lobster. Absolutely loved the atmosphere!"

  • "RM is a delicious concept! They decor is absolutely precious- it’s the perfect setting for a night with girlfriends or the end stop on a romantic date. We made a reservation for after dinner for dessert bites and champagne- the server was friendly and knowledgeable- she recommended the perfect bottle for us and the desserts were phenomenal. The options are extensive and allow you to choose a combination of different bite sized items, my favorite way to enjoy a sweet treat. Definitely recommend this place and cannot wait to go back!"

  • "Overall, we did have a nice dining experience with attentive staff & delicious entrees (& desserts) However, it all felt a bit "pretentiously hip" & it was a little difficult to find the restaurant. When we arrived, the hostesses came off a bit snooty. We were impressed by the selection of wine but found it ridiculous for there to not be any bottles available under $50! The starters of lobster deviled eggs & fried oysters were simply...meh. Nothing fabulous & overpriced. But then the steak frites & mac-n-cheese were out of this world! I mean those frites were the best I've ever had! And then the dessert options...we went for the dozen little bites...VERY COOL & DELICIOUS!!"
