Diner Reviews
  • "Try the halibut! It was outstanding served with capers, artichoke hearts - done to perfection. We had 3 appetizers, the artichoke fritters, scallops (to die for) and teh Tuna Poke (tuna tartar) and they were all good! Great neighborhood spot - just the right size and outdoor dining to boot."

  • "The margherita pizza and shrimp bruschetta were tasty. The chicken sandwich and burger were average. However, the main draw for us was the big patio where we could enjoy a couple glasses of wine. In this regard, it was perfect. The service was also good."

  • "Always enjoy the food and service. My only complaint is it can get noisy when crowded. And it is crowded a lot. Ood is very good. Service exceptional."

  • "We had a business lunch meeting and the weather was beautiful. We enjoyed sitting by the river and breathing the fresh air. Menu was varied....albeit surprised that our when asked about making some changes to a salad (removing fish but adding grilled vegetables to make this vegan) the waiter responded that is fine but there will be additional charge. I thought this was funny as there was no deduction for the fact that I didn't have the expensive sashimi tuna on the salad and only had a few brussel sprouts, mushrooms and beets added....which were individually added to the cost of the entire sashimi tuna salad. Oh well."

  • "Rivers is nicely set along the river, with indoor and outdoor seating. The wine is priced well. Good for large groups or couples. Staff really accommodating and nice. Food was excellent. Salmon was outstanding. Good experience overall."

  • "With limited outdoor and seated service restaurants in the loop, this is one worth checking out. The food is decent but the outdoor patio on a nice day, sitting along the river, can be a social scene worth checking out. It is a good place to take clients for lunch but for dinner you are better served leaving the loop and heading across the river for a far better selection of notable restaurants."

  • "I reserved a table for a co-workers going away party. I wanted outdoor seating but it was first come first serve. I got to the restaurant before 4:30pm and there still wasn't any seats available on the patio. I was slightly disappointed however our table inside was a nice size where everyone was able to fit comfortably. We order various types of bar food and I enjoyed everything but the calamari. It was not fried hard enough and was very spongy. Overall the food was good, the drinks were delicious and the atmosphere was great. It turned out to be a very fun evening"

  • "I've been coming here for business lunch quite often, service is consistently great and the food is delicious. The outdoor patio is awesome during warmer weather."

  • "Food is good for breakfast and lunch. Have not been for dinner. The noise level acoustics are very loud. Go to for breakfast meetings. Server was a bit clueless. Overall good food and convenient."

  • "I have come to Rivers many times over the years for lunch and pre-Opera dinners but this time felt very rushed by the servers. The wait staff tried to take my dining partner's salad three times when he was obviously not done. Finally he stopped our conversation and gobbled down more of the salad before he finally let them take it. I was also shocked at the sharp price increases since my last visit. A moderately sized Ahi Tuna salad for $20? There are too many other options in the neighborhood. Best of luck Rivers."

  • "I picked this restaurant as it was close to my customer location and it looked like a good place for lunch. I was very impressed with everything! Everyone thought the food and service was wonderful. I would certainly go back for business or personal. Wonderful experience!"

  • "I went to rivers during peak lunch hours. The service was outstanding and my water cup was never empty. The food was so delicious too. Very impressive. We went there for a business lunch so I was extremely happy with how professional the atmosphere is."

  • "The outdoor patio is great for a glass of wine or beer after work on a nice day. Unfortunately, the outdoor menu doesn't include any house cocktails and only includes pretty mediocre bar food. Great place to drink and chat with friends/colleagues, but next time we'll make dinner reservations elsewhere."

  • "It was a beautiful night to sit outside but the outsides not equipped for fine dining. So we sat alone inside. Disappointing soup and salad but fish entre was very good. "

  • "Dining outside was wonderful along side canal on a Spring evening. Attentive service. Very quiet on a Saturday night because it is downtown off the tourist path and there was no opera performance. Busy during week days as it is in an office building and has numerous office buildings surrounding it. Rivers can be enjoyed either way. Excellent fish menu with daily specials."

  • "Great food, view and service but a little hard to find."

  • "It was quiet because not crowded when we went. On previous visits, during lyric opera pre- performance, it has been more crowded and a little more noisy, but not overly so. The outdoor area overlooking the river was very scenic and had been fairly crowded from after work folks. It was just a little chilly for us at 8:30 pm, so we stayed indoors. The waitress was very good in that she explained the menu so that each item sounded special. The water service was excellent (my pet peeve). Unfortunately, the menu was not too inventive; the food only good enough; but the evening was very intimate and lovely because of the view seated at the windows overlooking the river and because we could hear each other talk."

  • "Nice location on the river. Union station across the way so there was a bunch of train noise wafting over when we were there. Appetizers were good. Calamari and crab cakes. Bread was forgettable (guys - so easy to do better). We both had fish. I'm going to be charitable and see Saturday nights at this place is not it's main reason-to-be food-wise. Fish is tough to do well, and this had all he ingredients but the result seemed liked a warm over and not terrifically exciting. Still service was good, place was off the tourist beaten path, and my guess is that this place hops during the week."

  • "Recently went to Rivers at 8:00 PM with a reservation. We got a great table by the patio overlooking the river. This was a fairly large restaurant, but at this time we were the only ones dining, a few people were at the bar. However, I have heard this place is hopping during the lunch hour, as it is located more in a business area. Our food was fantastic! We all started with soups, tomato lentil and a corn chowder- both amazing. I could have eaten the corn soup for dessert! I also ordered Lake Superior Whitefish, very tastey! For dessert I ordered limoncello tart. Service was great, very attentive, polite, and courteous. We will be back. The outdoor patio, when that opens, looks like it has a great bar!"

  • "We had a fabulous dinner before seeing a play at the Lyric Opera house. Loved having a cocktail on the patio. Came in for dinner. Delicious seafood. Nice wine list. Great service. Easy parking. "

  • "Good food but a bit overpriced ($17.95 for pasta with chicken). Always really busy and loud at lunch but good for business lunches. In this particular day, the waiter didn't even introduce himself. He just walked up and said, "are you ready to order?" Without even saying hi or giving his name. My friend and I just laughed after he walked away. But the good was good and service was fast. "

  • "We had tickets to a Lyric Opera presentation and found "Rivers" after an online search of restaurants within walking distance to the opera house. We had great food, excellent service and will return, especially in the summer to sit on their large outside patio overlooking the Chicago River. I don't understand why this reservation on Open Table did not qualify for points. It seems as if every time I make an Open Table reservation it doesn't qualify for points. Explanation, please!"

  • "Our server was awesome but a bit over stretched had to wait a long time to be greated and for our check at end of lunch. He was very personable but we noticed was giving too many tables all at once. The bisque should also be offered during lunch, it's a great soup. "

  • "My husband and I had dinner here Saturday night. We thought the food was overpriced for the portion we got and it was just ok tasting, nothing great. The calamari was very chewy. The place was pretty empty and I'm guessing it's because of the prices. If we visit Chicago again, we won't be returning."

  • "Four high school friends had dinner at Rivers before "The Sound of Music" performance on May 17. Our table was great, the meal was served with promptly and with professionalism, and the food was very good. We just had to cross the street to get to the Lyric Opera House following our pleasant meal. "

  • "The service and the drinks at Rivers is great. The food is okay but not great. Atmosphere and ambiance is nice though. So, if your looking for a quiet, romantic restaurant where the food is decent and the service and drinks are great, this would be a good restaurant to try."

  • "The restaurant was very nice and the services was exceptional. I would recommend the Lobster Bisque is was quiet delicious, the calmari was very good and the maryland crab cakes (starter) were good, but they were very small. Overall my experience dining there was wonderful, and I would recommend this restaurant to my family and friends."

  • "The ladies and I came in for the Sound of Music matinee. We first had a cup of soup at the Rivers Bar. Tomato Pepper soup was spicy & the spicy gumbo with Andouille was great, but a cup would have been plenty. The Bloodies were spicy and perfectly balanced. Our server was a darling and took good care of us. After the show, we were back for dinner. We sat by the window and enjoyed our leisurely dinner. Our waiter, Ramirez, took great care of us & made great suggestions. We had Scallops, Chillean Sea Bass and Grouper. All of us loved our dinners and cleaned our plates!! The Red Rock Merlot was smooth and my MacMurray chard was perfect. We finished up the night with the flourless choc cake, which we shared. Perfect evening!!"

  • "I was a single diner pleased to get a seat on rail. The view of the river and bridge is beautiful. I remember when nobody would consider dining next to the chicago river in this was a real pleasure. only issue for me was the Chicago apparently allows smoking outside.,"
