Back from hurricane Sandy and spit and polished to perfection. Food is if anything lighter and brighter. Round tables with large flower center pieces are romantic. The view is always spectacular. Special occasion? Small wedding? Proposal or just a date to remember - this is the room!

We just celebrated our wedding anniversary with a special meal here. When I booked it back in February I mentioned it was a special date and they made a real fuss of us, welcome glass of pink fizz, "Happy Anniversary" chocolate motifs on our dessert and super, friendly, but highly efficient staff. The sommellier recommended a wine my better half hadn't heard of (and he's usually quite good at knowing which wine goes with what), but it was perfect for his dish. We were stunned by the view of the Manhattan skyline by night, watching the illuminated ferries and other boats going by. As a location, it could not be bettered, and the food really was amazing - picture perfect AND delicious.

If all you do is enjoy the view it would be a great evening. But the River Cafe food equals the view and the service is also excellent. We both enjoyed the shrimp/crab appetizer which was amongst the best first courses we have ever had. The branzino and lobster were also exceptional. A three course fixed price at $115 per person was on the expensive side but well worth it. Book early and try to get a table next to the window overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan sky line at its finest. All tables have good views. Enjoy!!!

  • Best Restaurant and Dinner Ever

All fabulous. The view was amazing. Go in time to see the sunset (traffic was terrible over the bridge so give yourself at least 20 extra minutes). Lower Manhattan, World Trade, the Statute of Liberty glowing in a magical sunset. The food was the best we've had. Small portions but very rich. We were full. We had the lamb and duck. Both cooked to perfection. Dessert as good. The entire staff made every moment perfect. Bring your camera. There is a small deck that you can take amazing photographs from. Location. Literally just next to the Brooklyn Bridge. Hurricane Sandy destroyed this restaurant and they have come back more beautiful than ever. Need reservation well in advance. Definitely a must go. Fabulous piano bar New Steinway Cozy bar.

I booked this restaurant for a romantic wedding anniversary dinner following the advise of my son. I have to say that River Cafe surpassed all my expectations. It was superlative in all aspects: food, drinks, ambiance, sight and service. The fixed price menu offered a wide variety of attractive choices and so did the wine list. Definitely worth every penny. I will be back every time I visit the City.

Good service, good food and a great location! Overall a good evening - I just think it is largely overpriced for what it is - e.g not convince it is great value for money... We took the degustation menu with matching wine. For 2 person we end up paying 750$ including service.

It was definitely as case of 'the Emperors new clothes' the hype about the river cafe is all hype, no substance, if it was not for the view at night then it would have been a very mediocre experience that cost a considerable amount. The maître dee wanted to choose our wine for us before even offering a menu, he explained all courses to the couple at the next table but never to us, he probably hoped we'd overheard it. For the money it was not worth the effort of getting there from Times Square @ $100 return in taxi, found better food and better service at half the cost. If I visit New York again I would not revisit the River Cafe, it was a huge disappointment.

I was criticized for wearing a hat. No one enjoys being told what to do in a restaurant, especially in the hostile, and critical tone taken by the maitre d', who tried to teach me, a professor in his 70's, good manners. I'd never go back again.

Our first time back since the hurricane - why did we wait so long? Perfect spot for weekend lunch or early dinner while the light is still so pretty and the view and the garden are at their best. From the reception greeting, across the gang plank and into that serene space, one feels so calm and yet excited at the meal to come. We had a supreme experience with such finely prepared food and professional wait service, we wanted to stay on and on, and there was no feeling of being hurried. From the immaculate table linen to the boeuf tartare elegance, wine service and amazing main courses, we were so impressed. We only saw the elegant desserts but have to return to include one in another delightful meal. Still a gem in New York!

The River Cafe is delightful on all levels: incredible view of the Manhattan skyline at night; delicious and wonderfully presented food; excellent and well-timed service; white table cloth venue without any stuffiness at all. Lush fresh flower arrangements on every table, tinkling piano in the background, gorgeous garden pathway (with candlelight!) to the doorway. The New York strip melted in your mouth and the poached lobster was the first time I really enjoyed lobster (vs boiled lobster). The Brooklyn Bridge dessert is fun and FABULOUS if you like DARK chocolate. The Milk Chocolate Mousse with Toasted Marshmallow was warm and smooth and delicious. The view is grand no matter where you are seated. Love the Prix Fixe menu, too.

I've lived in Brooklyn my entire life and had the River Cafe on my bucket list for many years. We finally had the opportunity to attend for our 13th Wedding Anniversary. Food pairing was wonderful on the taste buds, in fact, the ravioli stuffed with sweet corn was delightful and the fig sauce served with our steak; simply amazing. However, if you're an "eater" this place is not for you. It is also known to be one of the most romantic restaurants in the city, however, we found the tables were placed closely together and if were prevy to many conversations. The service was the best i have ever experienced. A lot of tourists on the day we went. Overall, a once in a lifetime experience....

Good food good service once we sat down. Had tonwait almost 30 mins after our reservation time of 10pm to be seated. Were asked to go wait at over priced bar. Once seated the food was great and service was quick and easy. Overall a good experience, but definitely not better than the bunch of times I went before restaurant closed down. Need to bring back the same consistency and service levels. Also it looked like they hired a lot of new staff that were inexperienced.

Although the scenic view is fantastic, food was poor for the price we paid. There are only 2 menus to choose, the normal and the degustation one with a fixed price. We thought there was "a la carte" menu. We ordered meat and fish. Both were Ok, but we expected more for the price we paid. Deserts were very nice. Service was good. Ambience was good, but a bit noisy.

I haven't been here in many, many years, and know that this outstanding restaurant with incomparable view suffered complete loss in super storm Sandy, and was closed for 15 months! This is a first class restaurant in the Continental (French) manner with an extensive menu, and very fine wine list. I was alone and enjoyed a half bottle of excellent Chateau nuf de Pape. Of course one begins with an ambose bouche, and I even had a second one between the appetizer and my main course. My appetizer of tuna tartare was nicely mixed for me and was excellent. The second ambois bouche was a lovely oyster wrapped in smoked salmon that was superb. The black sea bass (my mouth is watering just thinking about it!) was very good and my desert was yummy

It was good, but with their reputation I was expecting more. Food is good, but nothing out if ordinary, same level of food that is offered in every better than average restaurant in NY. Scenic view is great, but we were seated far from window. I was not happy with the service, especially with maître d, or their head waiter (not the one who seats, but who brings you menu, and takes orders). He was not nice... He did not say anything rude, but his whole demeanor was very snobby. I ordered sea bass, then changed my order to lamb chops. I said 'well done', then added 'pls not pink' ( I wanted to make sure that I don't get pink, cause I don't eat pink lamb). He gave me a very snobby look and said 'you already said!'...
