A word from Rive Bistro
Voted "VERY GOOD" by The New York Times.

Rive is a French Bistro on the Saugatuck River in Westport, created by Chef Eric Sierra whose Bistro des Amis in downtown Westport was, for a decade, the go-to place of some of the world's best French bistro cooking.

Like the legendary bistros of Paris, Rive is warm, and convivial, a true bistro populaire.

The dining room, with a wrap-around wall of windows overlooks a bend in the river, there is fireplace for winter, and in warm weather there is an outdoor patio that feels like a cafe on the Seine.

With a suave lighting, urban decor and, of course, un comptoir (a bar) serving hip cocktails and wine by the glass, Rive is very much of-the -moment, as popular Parisian bistros today.

Diner Reviews
  • "As nice as the ambiance is we will never go back. The service was the worst I have ever experienced at ANY restaurant. We sat at the table for 15 min with no acknowledgement from staff. Finally called someone over who offered no greetings/apologies. Gave our entire order right then because we weren't sure when or if he would be back. We ordered mussels, salads, seafood entrees , dessert. Food took a long time to come out. It was ok but nothing to write home about. Never saw our waiter after we gave our initial order, just busers and food runners. We've tried this place 2 other times and each time the service has been disappointing. Decided to try it again because we had guests visiting and wanted to sit outside but that will be our last."

  • "Rive Bistro is an exquisite brunch experience on the water. Food and service were superb. The outside dining was incredible."

  • "The problem at Rive is principally the service system/organization. They have more than enough staff, but they are very poorly organized/trained ; UNORGANIZED! Bread comes and we ask for olive oil and for 10-15 min it doesn't appear until the olive oil server brings O&V for a salad. Ask the busboy for another drink and the message disappears. 10-15 min later the waiter comes oblivious to our request. Ask the waiter for more bread and the request is never honored until repeated to other service people at least twice. Food was served fast and slow, and the final problem was that the hot desert came 15 min after ordering and was cold. Rive needs a new person to replace some of the staff, organize the service system and train."

  • "Can a restaurant have Multiple Personality Disorder? We had a charming waitress whom could not have been more accomodating. Still, the overall service is amateurisitic with a ridiculously long wait between courses. Ordering drinks is an adventure in itself as it takes forever to get your drink and if you want another, the waitress will take your glass to use for a refill as they were running out of glasses at the bar. The menu is very limited but the duck confit and Foie Gras was delicious. The restaurant itself is lovely but the crowd on a Saturday night needs to understand that, in spite of the more relaxed attitude today of what one should wear when going to a fine restaurant, that flip-flops and cargo shorts really aren't appropriate."

  • "We've had a good meal at Rive, so it was very disappointing to go there on Saturday night. Our waiter was rude (kept skipping our table to serve all the tables around us, and snapped at us when we said we'd been there 15 minutes and would at least like some water!). I ordered the steak frites, which appeared as just a slab of meat on a plate. No garnish in any way. SLAB OF MEAT. And a grisly, tough slab at that. For $36! My mother ordered duck confit and fared somewhat better, but it came with tiny, gluey, potatoes. Would it kill Rive to serve something green on these plates? At these prices, a vegetable seems like a no brainer. Also, we had to scream in order to converse."

  • "Ideal spot for casual dining along the water. On a nice day, the outdoor patio cannot be beat! The food and service are far better than average for a restaurant outside of NYC."

  • "Really enjoyable lunch. Delicious food. Excellent service from Jean Pierre. Relaxing atmosphere alongside the river. Bistro appearance could be improved. Definitely will return"

  • "We frequent this restaurant for its excellent food and (usually) good service. But our dinner for 6 people on Saturday night was ruined by the incredibly inattentive service from our waitress. She should be fired! "

  • "We went on a Thursday night... must have been an off-night for the food considering all the other reviews-- really tough steak, overdone fish, but there is no excuse for the lack of service. They really need a staff training session or something to build cohesion. Won't go back until diners' reviews mention good service."

  • "Everything we ordered was solid, very well executed French bistro. The nose level on was a little bothersome. The service was pretty terrible. There did not seem to be a leader running the room and the servers seemed frazzled. There was a long wait for bread and entrees. We were not offered dessert at all. They appeared to be understaffed. I would go back for the food with low expectations for the service. "

  • "This restaurant is obviously well managed by the long-standing Frenchman of other notable restaurants. He came personally to our table twice at least on each occasion I have dined there. "

  • "Very good food - the steak was exceptional as was the striped bass special. Really nice vibe and ambiance - cannot wait to return in the summer and see the gorgeous view with trees in bloom. Bar area also looked inviting"

  • "We had high hopes and had a nice time at the bar but that's where it ended. We asked for bread (after receiving the butter but being promised the bread was coming out of the oven) probably 5 times before it arrived. We were basically forgotten about even though we had a very central table. Food was mediocre at best. We had to ask for our condiments at least 5x before they arrived. They even pulled them from the table next to us saying they "didn't touch them." Who wants old mustard? Yuck. We decided we would go back for a drink before going elsewhere for dinner. Very bummed because its a cool spot and had potential. We won't be back to dine."

  • "Really enjoyable night out. Great setting, nice vibe and decor and excellent service. Food was good although I'm marking it down because my filet was a bit overdone. Think it was more bad luck than a pervasive issue as everything else was excellent. They ended up comping dessert which was a really nice touch."

  • "We really enjoyed our dining experience there. The setting is wonderful overlooking the water. The dining room was comfortable and the atmosphere good for couples or groups of friends. The menu had a lot of good options and the food was all very good. We found the service attentive yet not hovering and very well timed. We will definitely return."

  • "I came here to celebrate Valentine's Day this year. Our table overlooked the river (a beauty amplified by the lightly falling snow and glow from the beautiful houses across the way). The meal itself was delightful - we had the salmon tartar, avocado sphere with crab legs and Burrata salad to start. The combination of the ripe avocado with the succulent crab legs, in line with the salmon and toasted pain de mie, was amazing! Great wine, too."

  • "Given both a river and coastline, it's a shame there are so few options for high-end waterfront dining in the Westport area. Rive fixes all that - great location right on the Saugatuck River serving a solid array of French inspired menu items. The steaks are top notch in my estimation - my son's #1 dining destination is to head over to Rive for the peppercorn filet with fries."

  • "My husband loves French food and, although French restaurants are not usually vegetarian friendly, I thought I'd give it a try. I'm so glad we did! The location on the Saugatuck River is beautiful! Service couldn't have been better...attentive, well informed and non-intrusive. We ordered the Butternut Squash and Pumpkin Ravioli and the Chopped Kale and Farro Salad for appetizers. Each was beautifully presented and delicious and made us anxious to try more! For entrees, my husband had Duck Confit with Truffle Risotto and I asked the chef to prepare a vegetarian entrée. My husband was absolutely delighted. My dish was beautifully presented and the vegetables were delicious! The Crème Brulee was the best I've ever tasted! We'll be back!"
