A word from Rive Bistro
Voted "VERY GOOD" by The New York Times.

Rive is a French Bistro on the Saugatuck River in Westport, created by Chef Eric Sierra whose Bistro des Amis in downtown Westport was, for a decade, the go-to place of some of the world's best French bistro cooking.

Like the legendary bistros of Paris, Rive is warm, and convivial, a true bistro populaire.

The dining room, with a wrap-around wall of windows overlooks a bend in the river, there is fireplace for winter, and in warm weather there is an outdoor patio that feels like a cafe on the Seine.

With a suave lighting, urban decor and, of course, un comptoir (a bar) serving hip cocktails and wine by the glass, Rive is very much of-the -moment, as popular Parisian bistros today.

Greatt ambiance on Saugatuck River. Dined under. Twinkly lights. Charming French manager and busboy. Our server very inattentive, which is why we got to know the other staff. Food was great. Foie gras with fig marmalade on brioche toast was awesome. Steak frites almost perfect: frites not crisp enough. Steak with Roquefort sauce to die for! Took a few minutes to get correctly cooked steak (wanted m edium rare and got well done). With the help of everyone except our waitress, got it right an remembered why I am a carnivore! Rive Bistro is the closest thing bistro dining on the Seine, this side of the pond.

food was OK. escargot was HEAVYLY seasoned with garlic - over the top. Lamb was dry and there wasn't even a sauce offered - i.e. mint or even a bernaise! They brought out infused Olive Oil! Pomme frites were limp and cold. Waygu burger bun was stale. Meat was tasty. Overall disappointment and it's not cheap.

Our first time dining here as we passed through Connecticut on our way home. The restaurant was very nice, with a good selection on the menu, including specials. Food was great, and service couldn't have been better. Dessert was excellent. All reasonably priced. Will definitely return.

Traditional french food well done. I would've given 4 1/2 stars if I could give a half. I was especially happy with the steak tartare because it's hard to find it well executed with lots of seasoning and flavor like they do it here, no egg on top however. Very good bifteck & frites as well, but since that's all we sampled I can't attest to the other food, will come back to sample more... Service was great and was very accommodating when I didn't like the wine I chose.

We came for an early dinner and were seated on the outdoor terrace overlooking the river. It could not have been a more wonderful experience. And since we were early, it was lovely and quiet. Wait staff was attentive, but not overbearing. We each had the salmon, which was very good, but the seasoning could have been a little stronger. I'd go back in a minute!

Had a delightful dinner - the setting on the patio is lovely and noise level tolerable. The food was quite good and well priced, especially the mussels and frites. Drinks were tasty; the only drawback was the lackadaisical service - plates were not cleared in a timely manner, and no bread was served with the meal nor with the mussels to soak up the broth.

The location is stellar. There are several options for dining with a view, indoors, outdoors or under the awning. Very pleasantly set up. There is a view from the bar also. French cuisine by a veteran French restaurant owner was excellent. Very enjoyable anniversary dinner. Cool 2CV, and other Citroens out front!

Dined on a Sunday evening. Waiter announced they did not have 3 of 6 fish main courses. My husband asked for a side of haricot vert with main course and guess what, they were out of haricot vert, too. Asked for Kale instead - never arrived but showed up on bill. Husband had steak frites - steak cooked well but frites were soggy and lacked seasoning. My trout was supposed to come with haricot vert and instead came with asparagus - I was not informed. Overall, food was bland and lacked seasoning. Starters of seafood sausage and Duck pate were fine but needed seasoning. With so many restaurants to choose from - would not go back to this one.

We chose this restaurant for its lovely scenic view and outdoor seating and because it was "celebrating Bastille Day." We expected to some specials or a drink or something reflecting the iconic French Revolutionary celebration, but -- other than a few balloons at the front door and a sign "celebrate Bastille Day with us" -- there was nothing. We had a lovely table right by the river and planned to have fish. Unfortunately, we learned the kitchen was out of 3 of the 5 five fish dishes on the menu. The food we did order was tasty and well-prepared, but just not what we had wanted. Additionally, we didn't receive the wine we ordered: a substitution was made without asking us. It was very nice, but not what we expected.

As one of my favorite neighborhood spots, I have been to Rive Bistro quite a few times, but up till now only for dinner or Sunday brunch since I work in NYC. I happened to be in CT last Friday and went to lunch there for the first time and found them to have an excellent lunch menu at very reasonable prices (certainly when compared with lunch in Manhattan!).

As nice as the ambiance is we will never go back. The service was the worst I have ever experienced at ANY restaurant. We sat at the table for 15 min with no acknowledgement from staff. Finally called someone over who offered no greetings/apologies. Gave our entire order right then because we weren't sure when or if he would be back. We ordered mussels, salads, seafood entrees , dessert. Food took a long time to come out. It was ok but nothing to write home about. Never saw our waiter after we gave our initial order, just busers and food runners. We've tried this place 2 other times and each time the service has been disappointing. Decided to try it again because we had guests visiting and wanted to sit outside but that will be our last.

Can a restaurant have Multiple Personality Disorder? We had a charming waitress whom could not have been more accomodating. Still, the overall service is amateurisitic with a ridiculously long wait between courses. Ordering drinks is an adventure in itself as it takes forever to get your drink and if you want another, the waitress will take your glass to use for a refill as they were running out of glasses at the bar. The menu is very limited but the duck confit and Foie Gras was delicious. The restaurant itself is lovely but the crowd on a Saturday night needs to understand that, in spite of the more relaxed attitude today of what one should wear when going to a fine restaurant, that flip-flops and cargo shorts really aren't appropriate.

  • Rive Bistro Service Disaster
    RickVIP
    Dined on 5/31/2014
The problem at Rive is principally the service system/organization. They have more than enough staff, but they are very poorly organized/trained ; UNORGANIZED! Bread comes and we ask for olive oil and for 10-15 min it doesn't appear until the olive oil server brings O&V for a salad. Ask the busboy for another drink and the message disappears. 10-15 min later the waiter comes oblivious to our request. Ask the waiter for more bread and the request is never honored until repeated to other service people at least twice. Food was served fast and slow, and the final problem was that the hot desert came 15 min after ordering and was cold. Rive needs a new person to replace some of the staff, organize the service system and train.

We've had a good meal at Rive, so it was very disappointing to go there on Saturday night. Our waiter was rude (kept skipping our table to serve all the tables around us, and snapped at us when we said we'd been there 15 minutes and would at least like some water!). I ordered the steak frites, which appeared as just a slab of meat on a plate. No garnish in any way. SLAB OF MEAT. And a grisly, tough slab at that. For $36! My mother ordered duck confit and fared somewhat better, but it came with tiny, gluey, potatoes. Would it kill Rive to serve something green on these plates? At these prices, a vegetable seems like a no brainer. Also, we had to scream in order to converse.

We went on a Thursday night... must have been an off-night for the food considering all the other reviews-- really tough steak, overdone fish, but there is no excuse for the lack of service. They really need a staff training session or something to build cohesion. Won't go back until diners' reviews mention good service.

Everything we ordered was solid, very well executed French bistro. The nose level on was a little bothersome. The service was pretty terrible. There did not seem to be a leader running the room and the servers seemed frazzled. There was a long wait for bread and entrees. We were not offered dessert at all. They appeared to be understaffed. I would go back for the food with low expectations for the service.

We had high hopes and had a nice time at the bar but that's where it ended. We asked for bread (after receiving the butter but being promised the bread was coming out of the oven) probably 5 times before it arrived. We were basically forgotten about even though we had a very central table. Food was mediocre at best. We had to ask for our condiments at least 5x before they arrived. They even pulled them from the table next to us saying they "didn't touch them." Who wants old mustard? Yuck. We decided we would go back for a drink before going elsewhere for dinner. Very bummed because its a cool spot and had potential. We won't be back to dine.
