We made reservations for 8:30pm, which weren't ready when we got there. There was about a 10-15 minute wait past our reservation, but Massimo was very welcoming so the wait didn't bother us. Service was pretty slow for the time of night, and it took forever for someone to realize we never got menus. Our waitress was the saving grace of the service, she was so patient and accommodating to my pointing of things on the menu. This is one of our favorite restaurants in Portsmouth so it seemed like a obvious choice. We were promtly greeted by Massimo himself and felt very welcomed. We were seated in a small room which was very nice and quiet and above all we were able to speak to one another without shouting over any noise. The food was tasty to say the least and enjoyed by all. The service was outstanding and overall our dining experience was 5 star. The table we were seated at was tucked away in a little brick alcove in the basement dining room, and I loved the feeling of the old building all around us. The waitstaff was very friendly and personable, and gave excellent advice on the dishes and wine. The food itself was masterfully prepared, and the wine list was extensive, although the bottle selection was far more varied than the by-the-glass selection. I found the decor and the general ambiance to err slightly towards the tacky side, but the quality of everything really made up for it.
