Diner Reviews
  • "I don't expect to go to a fancy restaurant and be overwhelmed by cooking odors and stale food smells in the furniture. It doesn't bother some people, but it does bother me. The food was not bad, but not special either. Each of us had a pasta dish and each had a heavy cream sauce on the pasta. Maybe we didn't read the menu carefully enough--perhaps the menu noted that each sauce also had cream in it. However, the sauces were just too heavy for the other ingredients. We had escargot and carpaccio appetizers. The former had a sweet, rather than garlicky taste. Not bad, but I would not have ordered it had I known. The carpaccio was just thinly sliced rare roast beef with no flavoring and a heavy pesto sauce on top. And it cost too much."

  • "Saturday was a fantastic day amidst the Cherry Blossoms in Washington DC. My wife and I were visiting our Son and his girlfriend for the weekend. We had made a reservation at La Perla for 7:30pm. We arrived one hour early. La Perla staff had no problem seating us early. The food and service was excellent! After we were finished with our main course, the Chef (Victor) visited our table to make sure all was well. He was charming and engaging, we had no problem explaining how much we had enjoyed our meals. Great veal, great pasta! Wow, would I come to La Perla again, absolutely! P.S. I inadvertently left my expensive camera under the table. Shortly after we had left, I received a call from the staff. Thank You La Perla!!"

  • "Almost missed out on this one. Glad I changed my reservation. This place is top itch from top to bottom staff is good, although I think we got a new waiter, and the good is even better. The owner Chef came by our table to check on us not once but twice! Very nice man that knows how to cook. Recommended for anyone traveling to DC. Located on Pensylvania just on the border with Georgetown"

  • "This is a wonderful restaurant, great food, great service and an overall terrific experience. I dine there with my family every time we are in DC and I am never disappointed. The food is unique and delicious, the service impeccable and they are always so happy and cheerful to see us. I recommend this place highly!"

  • "Our second visit here. Friends were in town and had heard about the place so wanted to try it. Overall very good. Food was excellent, I had the pheasant which was excellent. The antipasto was very good though presentation unimaginative. Lasagne, pasta and seafood dishes were also excellent. Fried calamari good size for 2 to share. The waiter was good but continued to reach in front of me all the time which is something that never happens in fine dining establishments. I though he would push me back with his arm on several occasions. The wine list was mediocre and selections of wine by the glass was awful, though I find this typical in most DC restaurants. No half bottles available. The Chianti by the glass was God awful! Recommended"

  • "Everything from the bread through the desert was delicious. While the food was wonderful, our waiter gave the impression he was more interested in rolling over the table than focusing on us."

  • "Gotta to go if you have not been there. Pasta and the Trout were the main dishes. John at the bar will always help you with the wine you need. Service is Tops!"

  • "I've often passed La Perla on my way to Georgetown for dinner after concerts at the Kennedy Center. What a mistake: the kitchen is unequivocally one of the best in Washington. Everything showed the highest standard of sourcing and preparation. From the perfectly al dente pappardelle...with a tomato sauce that for once actually tasted like fresh tomatoes...to a Caesar Salad that was surprisingly light and crispy: these basics showed that someone was paying attention. Then veal Marsala whose sauce had flavors that were bright and suffused with wine and spice, juicy mushrooms, accompanying succulent pieces of veal that were seared perfectly yet so moist. Traditional Italian cooking with the freshest ingredients and sublime preparation."

  • "Food was amazing! Highly recommend the Veal Parm! The Chef came by our table to check on our meal. The location was great if you are looking for a nice place to eat before going to the Kennedy Center for any events!"

  • "I enjoyed everything about La Perla. The service was great and the owner chef visited every table. The place is just the right size. I believe the servers were Italiano and I found it difficult to understand them at times. The lobster and shrimp soup was delious. I also enjoyed the coconut shrimp and seafood lasangua. La Perla is a bit pricy but worth every penny. I will visit La Perla again."

  • "This is a retro kind of a place, Italian food. My sautéed trout with crabmeat was pretty good, but I did not understand the cold fish head among the asparagus. Was it to show that they started with a whole fish? My wife said that her veal dish did not have very much veal with the melted cheese. The chef gave us shopping bags with La Perla on them. He was very nice. The waiters were very good. It is an attractive setting. The food may need a refresher course."

  • "Took some business colleagues there for dinner on St. Patrick's Day. Excellent service, food, presentation, and even a personal visit from the owner/chef. This is my second trip in 12-months with the same results on my prior visit. Definitely recommended for an authentic Italian experience."

  • "After the Bach Consort's fabulous performance of the St. John Passion, we returned to La Perla for a tasty meal. Selections of burrata, meats, and crispy calamari fritti started our meal. Our main courses consisted of tender osso buco, a veal chop, and a fillet of branzino prepared al forno (in the oven). The Chef always make his way to our table to extend greetings. Our dinner was topped off by some Grapa, Casada Cake and a Tira Misu. The service provided by Shahrokh was stellar. We look forward to returning to La Perla of Washington soon."

  • "I had passed this gem walk from Georgetown to Foggy Bottom. When I made a quick change of plans, I made reservations on Open Table and I thank my lucky stars! The ambience, which has the flags of the Sienna palio horse races and other Italian themes but retains a bright uncluttered air, is wonderful. The service was impeccable even BEFORE Chef Vittorio made the rounds. My son said that the Chicken Parm/pasta were the best of his life...and he has had great Italian food all over Italy and at his nonna's home. My husband and I both chose the branzino which was simultaneously delicate and yet full of taste. I had the pasta fagioli for my soup and an arugula salad which were second to none. Will be coming back again and again."

  • "We can't say enough great things about this wonderful restaurant. My partner and I went here to celebrate our anniversary in March 2014. We were immediately greeted with a smile and escorted by the host to our table. We were 15 minutes early but that didn't seem to matter! Our server was Shahrokh and he was fantastic. He explained the menu and answered all of our questions with ease. Chef Vittorio Testa himself came out and talked to every table in the place, including ours ... such a friendly and warm gentleman. The atmosphere is so peaceful and romantic here. You can actually have a normal conversation without screaming across the table. The food ... wow! Everything we ordered was flavorful and cooked to perfection."

  • "A delightful restaurant located by the bridge that connects Georgetown to DC. Parking can be challenging but valet parking is offered. TAs you walk in you are looking at a display case of mouthwateringly delicious cakes and desserts. Once shown to your table the service is unassuming but efficient. There is a huge tile motif on one wall with a fountain breathing a gentle bubble of smoke. A huge bar to the right of the fountain offers respite to those waiting a table or wishing to linger after a meal. Looking on Pennsylvania Ave traffic is always interesting and a good spot to people gaze. The food is very good & your waiter can guide you through the menu. Expect to see the chef wander out for a chat in person or the President!!"

Not only that but a warm and inviting atmosphere, wonderful food, expertly prepared, and we cannot wait to come back to Perlas.I love a good veal chop and I just want to know how they do it so well. • "My dining experience was very nice and personal. You get to meet the owner/chef of the restaurant and he is adorable. The food tasted fannnnntasic, although the portions were not as filling. Also, it was very expensive, but it's worth the nice experience and good food. I would definitley recommend this place for a special occasion and if you expect to be full when you leave I suggest you bring about $200- $250 to eat well. I loved it :) :) P. S. I ordered the Fetticunie cream pasta with the lobster, veal, and shrimp and it was amazing. :)"

  • "This year, I planned to take my wife of 23 years to lunch for Valentines day, before the Valentines day rush on the 14th. I had been to La Pearla 6-8 years ago and had enjoyed the meal, so I thought I would try them again. Their location is conveniently located off the main ave near the exit to Whitehurst freeway and with an 11:30 reservation parking was ample. The atmosphere was great and the food was exceptional. The server did get my wife's order incorrect. They recovered from this miss step by actually reading the special note I had inserted in the open table reservation, " please bring my wife something with chocolate, it's our 23rd anniversary....and they did. Even met the chef! Food was perfect in every respect. Wines were excellent. Be prepared to pay for this experience. $$$"

  • "Three friends and myself decided to have a "girls night " out culminating in the musical "Flashdance" at the Kennedy Center. I chose La Perla for its nearness to the Center and its reputation for fine Italian dining. All the reviews were right on target. From the moment we stepped in the door, we were charmed by friendly greetings, a lovely table and a menu of delicious entrees. Our waiter offered attentive service without being pushy and helped us set up a memorable dining experience from appetizers to desserts. Although this restaurant is more expensive than some other nearbye Italian eateries, I rely on my Sicilian mother's adage....you get what you pay for! La Perla delivers quality service, food and ambience all at the same time!"

  • "A little bit of Old World Italian with excellent food and service. Went to dinner before a show at the Kennedy Center. Had the shrimp parm and medallions with a Caesar salad. The whole experience was calm and relaxing with the delicious food. We saw a number of choices to order and will be back again to try those. The service was very good in getting us out on time to our show without rushing. This is definitely a keeper."

  • "We wish we were in DC more often so we could eat here more frequently. Great food (wild boar special was superb) and exceptional service. The waiter was at our table immediately whenever we felt like we needed something else. The owner also stopped by for a visit and talked with us about his time in Boston. We have already recommended it to two couples that were headed to DC for a weekend. A definite stop on our next trip."

  • "My new husband and I decided to have a nice, romantic New Year's Eve lunch -- then head home to a cozy evening to watch the ball drop. La Perla fit the bill wonderfully. The food was great, the service excellent. I had a lobster ravioli special that was rich and light at the same time. My husband had an unusual chicken dish with avocados and olives that he raved about. The bread served throughout the meal was hearty, fresh and slightly chewy. We then strolled through Georgetown until we hailed a cab home. Simply a perfect start to the New Year."

  • "The chef and owner, Vittorio, stopped by our table. No complaints from us, only praise. Perfectly creamy burrata with sweet beefsteak tomatoes and herbs, though better without the addition of prosciuto. Excellent Caesar salads -- something extra, not sure what. My osso buco was tender and flavorful, while partner's linguini alle vongole was fresh and delicious. Fabulous cassata -- sponge cake, ricotta, other ingredients, and rum, very sweet. Most special was the place itself, decorative Italian, waiters in black tie, elegant table settings. A wonderful evening."
