A word from Ristorante La Buca
The name translates as 'the cave' with rooms decidedly 'dark,. La Buca offers excellent, fresh fare (especially the outstanding grilled fish & other traditional Italian seafood!) & experienced old-world service. La Buca is located below street level on Washington Square.

Diner Reviews
  • "Dinner was delicious and one of the best parts was we could hear each other (4 in group) without shouting. While this is not cutting edge dining the food is fresh and the service is professional without hovering. A very relaxing and enjoyable evening."

  • "The food was very good, and the service was polite and attentive. The ambience is likely better at dinner. Only two other tables were in use at lunch."

  • "La Buca (off Washington Square) has been here for ages and the decor hasn't changed - nor the great food. With REAL Italian food and prices under $15 at lunch this is a great find. It's never really busy so good place to meet friends and talk. This week's service was fine too. We'll be back"

  • "I have dinning at La Buca going on 26 years. I have never been disappointed. The Dover Sole is to die for. The drinks are generous and Tom, our server, as always, was at the top of his game. This restaurant continues to be at the top of list."

  • "If you are looking for a relaxed, old-world experience complete with the generally now-disappeared food cart then La Buca is your place. It was well attended mainly by a well-healed elderly crowd from the apartments nearby on Washington Square. Thus, it is in a very nice area. The service was very professional yet we did not feel rushed. The food was good, but uninspiring."

  • "39 years after it opened, LaBuca is still packed, the wait staff consists of professional waiters, the food is delicious! A perfect getaway for a lovely meal and fine wine!"

  • "La Buca has been around for 35 years (I think) but I always thought of it for dinner. Last week we went for lunch and the food was great and really reasonable. We efven ordered dessert and were out for under $25. before tip. The waiters are old school and try to be clever - somethimes they are."

  • "La Buca was recommended to us by our innkeeper at Locanda Sant'Agata in Tuscany Italy. Since the fare at Locanda Sant'Agata was outstanding we couldn't wait to take him up on his recommendation. We were dining early before an evening event. We called ahead for respervations and were seated immediately when we arrived. The service was prompt but unhurried. My wife ordered the eggplant casserole and branzino. The branzino was filleted at tableside by our server. Both courses were excellent. My meal was a speck salad and vitello la buca - a veal cutlet topped with asparagus and crabmeat. We didn't get a chance to sample the desert cart because of our evening plans. We look forward to returning to La Buca to explore the rest of the menu."

  • "Ristorante la Buca wasn't what I was expecting, but it was lovely. Very quiet and a little bit "old world," but the food and service were absolutely outstanding. We had the tomato mozzarella to start and then linguini with clams and veal parmesan. Everything was excellent. My glass of Pinot was also very generous. Great for a quiet date night."

  • "The food and desserts were amazing. The service was also spot on."

  • "Our server was especially talented at fileting the fish; she was also very polite and personable."

  • "We love it and go there often. We love it for reasons that might not appeal to some): the menu changes hardly at all; dignified atmosphere; no glitz; peace and quiet; comfortable seating. Food is entirely to our taste--fresh, simple, delicious Italian cuisine. Fine fresh fish. My five stars for the food might be your three stars, because the chef isn't always trying to create something new and exotic. Drinks are excellent. I could make a meal of their spinach with garlic. It's our "go to" restaurant whenever we want a lovely, dependable dinner."

  • "Washington Square's Cheers. Informal bar (dinner at the bar is discounted). Usually the bar is populated with locals, but seldom crowded. Have never had a bad meal here. Great pasta, Dover sole is to die for."

  • "We had a 5:30pm reservation because we had tickets to an 8:00pm show. We didn't get seated until after 6:00pm, we didn't get our appetizers until after 7:00pm and our entrees until 7:30. There was no time for coffee or dessert. Very, very disappointing."

  • "This is the first review I have written for LaBuca. It has been a favorite of our for many, many years. Why? The food is consistently excellent and the service can't be beat."

  • "Very nice once they moved us to another table, there were several holiday parties going on. Beef not recommended but the shrimp and risotto was wonderful and the staff was very attentive, especially since they were very busy."

  • "We can always depend on a very good meal at La Buca before theater. The wait staff always makes sure we are served and out of the restaurant in plenty of time prior to the performance. Food is always enjoyable and hot."

  • "The restaurant definitely had an old school Italian feel. My boyfriend and I were the youngest people there by a few decades and it seemed to gear itself to the pre theatre show dinner crowd. The food was good and legitimate, but for all the great spots in philly this place didn't seem to be as much fun."

  • "The food at La Buca is always excellent served in an old world atmosphere and manner. The fact that the restaurant has maintained a thriving business for so many years speaks for itself. I like the place!"

  • "After a great deal of searching for someplace close to the Walnut St. and a change from tavern-style dining, we decided to book our reservation. We were given a table in the back of the room in the corner, and I feel that we were forgotten at times. Our waitress was freindly, but not impressed with her service...forgot rolls, didn't check in with us much, long wait for dessert...just disappointing. The dessert tray was presented to us as an afterthought and so quickly I could hardly understand the waiter. Really poor. I was also very surprised that chicken parmesan was not served with spaghetti. To have to ask for that and pay an extra $3.00 was ridiculous. Never heard of chicken parm served with scalloped potatoes, absurd!"

  • "We have been going to La Buca before the theatre and for special family events for more than fifteen years. We have never been disappointed! Great food and wonderful preparation; incomparable waitstaff; enjoyable ambience; usually quiet."

  • "Good food. Older decor. Authentic italian service. I like the idea of bringing the fresh fish to your table to view and select."

  • "Just a quiet and relaxed meal in the course of a hectic day. It was the perfect place before a show at the Walnut Theater."

  • "Food is consistently good although the menu could use some updating - it never changes - which is good and bad. We had a great server who was very attentive, and the service was efficient enough that we were out in plenty of time for the theater. The host even remembered us, and we had not been there over the summer as we were out of town. The place is quiet enough for conversation which is rare in restaurants these days."

  • "The food was always good but lately has improved to excellent. Out waiter was personable and described things with just the right amount of detail."

  • "My Husband & I enjoyed our dinner once again. We have been to La Buca several times. We have tickets to the Walnut Street Theater and it is very convenient for going to the show. We have never been disappointed. This visit, we arrived late for our reservation because of traffic, but was graciously greeted by Von & seated promptly. Our servers, Amy & Von were cordial & professional, they were able to get us done in plenty of time for the show, but we didn't feel rushed at all. We enjoyed dinner in a leisurely manner & even had dessert. Looking forward to the next time."

  • "When we arrived for our 7 PM reservation, there was no host or hostess. After a bit, what turned out to be the bartender came out to the dining room. I said we had a 7 o'clock reservation, to which he barked, no tables for a half an hour. I reiterated I had made the reservation about a week ago. He said again, that there was no table and kept walking away. He didn't even ask for the reservation name. Then they wouldn't honor the "Restaurant Week" menu even though their entry on the list indicated they would offer the prix fixe menu on Saturday. Only drinks and bread by 8:05 I've never been treated so poorly. The evening was ruined from the start."

  • "wonderful sauteed scallops and delicious broccoli!!! yes! broccoli...Cooked to perfection. The desserts are always wonderful; this time a creme brulee. The straccitella soup is always a treat. Service w/Amy was delightful. As it is with all the servers...Always out in time for theater and other happenings."
