A word from Ristobar
In Italy, ristobars are casual, comfortable neighborhood gathering places where friends and family convene to conversate, eat, and drink. In San Francisco, restaurateur and pastry master Gary Rulli’s stateside version of a ristobar is a destination for rustic Italian fare and artisanal pizza, best enjoyed with Italian beer, wine, and good company. Rulli’s Executive Chef Michele Belotti combines the best products and practices of Italy with the bounty of fresh ingredients available in the Bay area.

Diner Reviews
  • "We go back often as this restaurant is our favorite pizza in the Marina. We may live in Sonoma but this restaurant sees us at least once per month. This is the place for the higher-end gourmet and very Italian style pizza. Service is attentive without being intrusive. Great happy hour daily."

  • "My wife and I thoroughly enjoy our dinner at Ristobar. It was a fitting finale to our three glorious weeks in SF. The food, wine and service was first class and I have to say that it was one of the dining highlights of our time in the city and we dined out many nights ! We both commented that if we're staying longer we would have gone back again. We actually stumbled across the restaurant when walking along Chestnut street on St Patricks say and were delighted by the service of the staff that day when all we wanted was a quick drink - my wife did not like the original drink and the waiter could not do enough to ensure that she got a drink that she liked. That service bought us back and we were not disappointed."

  • "Very much enjoyed our experience at Ristobar, the hostess was very nice and seated me immediately even though my girlfriend arrived 10 minutes later... Our waitress was attentive and very pleasant and the rest of the staff did a great job of assisting her. The food was so delicious, we will be back!"

  • "This is a beautiful spot in a wonderful residential neighborhood, and not a trendy place, THANK GOD!, so you can actually have a conversation while you eat delicious Italian food from the Lombardy region of Italy. The pizza was excellent, as was the pasta and everything else. Our waiter was charming, efficient, and Italian as well! I will recommend Ristobar to others."

  • "We dine out a lot. We seldom find places we can't WAIT to return to. Ristobar is one of those places! Be sure not to miss the hand made in house pastas. The Osso Bucco with Polenta was the best I've had this side of Rio de J...."

  • "love this place but would recommend they have some more natively vegetarian pastas. every time we have to have them twist around the menu to accomodate us, whch they do."

  • "Everything was very nice; appreciated that the menu was a little different than the ordinary restaurant--yet not so different as to be weird. Our only reservation, the portions were not huge."

  • "ZmHigh noise level when guests laughed loudly or screeched. Loud grating noise when guest moved chairs on the floor. Limited and expensive wine list for someone not knowledgable about Italian wines. The food was very good although portions were modest. AM"

  • "Greens and olives in the burrata over-salted, ditto the polenta in the main dsh short rib. Sous chef isn't tasting the food before it goes out or can't taste salt. Wine list is pretentious and unimaginative."

  • "We came for my father's 80th birthday, but I'm afraid the place was so noisy on a Saturday that my dad couldn't really enjoy the meal through all the noise. A nice room, and the wait staff was fine. The food was hit and miss: excellent pasta, but the filet and osso buck were curiously lacking in flavor (perhaps my mistake for ordering steak in an Italian restaurant…but the osso buck?) So I would recommend lunch for pasta. But the evening was a disappointment, unfortunately."

  • "1st visit back since it used to be the Gran Caffe. My girlfriend and were promptly seated. Ed, our server, took outstanding care of us throughout the evening. We didn't try the Valentine's prix fixe menu. It was a full house given the special occasion. Noise from people talking was noticeable but you didn't have to shout out. After an hour, some people left and the noise dropped considerably. All the food was delicious and the presentation added to our experience. Definitely recommend the paperdelle and agnolotti - just amazing! And the amalfi and budato di cioccolato were divine! We'll be back!"

  • "Our food was absolutely delicious! I will warn you that the portions are very small; however, they are exquisitely prepared. You just need to order more courses. We had their pizza as an appetizer. It was delicious as well. We liked our desserts too! Our cocktails were made to perfection. They tasted like a cocktail should taste with a good amount of alcohol. I hate a weak drink. Our waiter was so friendly. He even brought out samples of wine to make sure we would enjoy the bottle that we would buy. It was a pleasure eating here."

  • "There are no spaces suitable for a really special occasion. I should have called in advance to tell them, but we ended up near the toilets next to a "kiddie" table which wasn't very romantic. Service was fine, food excellent, wine list a problem because it is all Italian wines that we know nothing about. The waiter tried to be helpful with advice, though. We like going here because the food is good, it is always easy to get in and the noise level is tolerable."

  • "The food is very good but the service has been the low point in this restaurant for the last 2 years. It seems to be getting worse."

  • "The food was ok, some dishes better than others but the service was very inconsistent and not very attentive."

  • "Love ristobar - great dishes and friendly welcoming, class atmosphere. Take my parents when they visit, go on dates, or sit at the bar if you're solo. Every dish I've had there has been over the top flavorful!"

  • "The burrata appetizer was excellent. Each of us got a different pasta dish and shared bites, and all were delicious yet very different from each other. Only complaint was that the service was slow... we had to ask a busser twice for our easier to order our main course."

  • "I can't wait to go back. We came here for a Ladies Lunch Birthday celebration and we were very pleased. Outstanding house made fresh pasta - we had three different dishes and they were all outstanding. The barata was the best we've ever had and don't miss the stuffed pepper appetizer. Very comfortable for both inside and outside seating. Service was excellent. Looking forward to a return visit."

  • "RistoBar is a gem! It's the next best thing to bring at a real European Parisian Italian bistro right in our own neighborhood. The good is very Italian! Excellent! One of our favorite! Wish they would serve breakfast again!! The neighborhood needs it!"

  • "The food here was incredible, the service was really good the waiters try to give you the best recommendations regarding to wine and food. I will definitely go back again! Their tiramisu is the beast I've tried in San Francisco"

  • "Handled our large group with great style and attentiveness! Expensive wine list, but sommelier helped us find a very nice Italian wine in the lower range."

  • "I chose Ristobar because it was within walking distance of Crissy Field and the menu fit a wide range of eating preferences. They also have a full bar and good selection of Italian wines. Ristobar did not disappoint! Everyone was happy with their lunch and drinks with the exception of one in our party of seven who did not like the bloody mary because it wasn't spicy enough. I enjoyed mine, but it tasted different from any bloody mary that I have ever had before - something about the choice of tomato juice combined with the spices used. The restaurant has a lovely ambience with an elegant and high ceiling. Everyone (twenty somethings to fifty somethings) in our group liked the venue including locals and foodies!"

  • "It is time to refresh the menu, and you need a new soup already! This is a great spot, and the bar makes wonderful drinks. The pizzas are very good but we are all bored of them. You need a nice pork chop on the menu as well."

  • "I've been at Ristobar three times and I've always loved the food. However, when it comes to service, I've had different experiences. The first two times it was great, but last Saturday it was terrible (slow, unorganized and not accurate at all). I really like the place, so I'll keep going there to get a better opinion. Definitely give it a try!"

  • "We came here with a group of 8 for a friend's birthday party and had a wonderful experience. The ambiance was perfect...not too loud but good energy. The service was right on point and the food...oh the food! It was so delicious. We were able to order a bunch of small plates and also enjoy their homemade breadsticks which were super yummy! We had the seasonal gnocchi which were great...they were much larger than traditional gnocchi which made it fun. We had a couple sides such as the brussel sprouts, kale and the peperu...all which was savory and delicious. We also had cavatelli which was light and flavorful. And don't forget the wine! All in all, a fabulous experience!"

  • "We came here a few years ago and were underwhelmed, but this time we were very pleasantly surprised by how great the food was. The three entrees we had (steak, pork, osso buco) were all cooked perfectly--tender and moist. Bravo, Ristobar!"

  • "The roasted rabbit tasted exactly the way my grandmother use to make it for us. I asked them to substitute the potatoes for polenta & that was no problem."

  • "We oftentimes forget about this wonderful Chestnut restaurant but every time I dine here, I am reminded why this is one of my favorite under the radar restaurant. Monday evening was pretty quiet but normally we tend to dine on the weekends where the activity is raised. Food and service is always amazing and the prices are in line with what you would expect. My only issue is I can never get through the menu because there are my favorites, and then new dishes I always want to try but can never seem to get to. Great restaurant for pretty much any occasion. They also have a great wine menu and full bar."

  • "The food here was great! Wish I could say the same for service. Our server kept disappearing and the meal wound up being 2 1/2 hours b/c we couldn't get him to bring the check. He also messed up the dessert."

  • "Food was wonderful. Parking was a HUGE Problem. They need to get their wine program together. I ordered two different bottles neither was available. The manager appologized saying that they had given the wrong list. They were very nice but the complementary glass arrived when I was almost done with dinner. I am sure they will fix the problem. The food was great."

  • "No need for piped-in music; the patrons generate enough buzz. Food was elegant in moderate portions. Very helpful waitress. Dine early for less noise."

  • "Shared salad, pasta, pizza. Very different but quite elegant preparations. In my Open Table reservation, I asked for an outside table but none was reserved. The elegance of your cuisine deserves a higher level of welcome and service. Your wait-staffers were friendly and reasonably responsive, but they, too, would benefit from believing and understanding that they were serving a cuisine well above the average. By my measure, the best in the area at the moment."

  • "We like Ristobar since the portions are small, and you very unique and tasty. Always ask what the staff likes: since the dishes change, they are the ones most current. Bottle wine list is pricy, but some less expensive good wines on the Bar Wine list. (Forget about asking for a crisp, dry white: doesn't seem to fit their buyer's ideas.)"
