Diner Reviews
  • "The food is ALWAYS great. For all other items, see star ranking."

  • "I liked the sardine appetizer but thought the mahi-mahi was only fair. (My wife had the same dish and she liked it better.) Menu choices quite limited. I ordered a single malt scotch for a cocktail and got a very stingy pour. Desert was only OK and the portion was small. Waiter was overworked - took a long time to take our order. Waiter took away a drink before the person finished it. We've had lovely meals at Ris - but this one didn't do it for me. In fairness, the others I was with liked it better than I did. A lot of money for small portions and presentations that missed the mark."

  • "We are used to excellent food and service at Ris, one of our favorite DC restaurants. This trip disappointed. The Caesar salad contained the tough outside lettuce leaves. The lamb shank was undercooked and tough. As always the desserts were divine. We will be back, but will choose more carefully."

  • "Very good for business lunch: smart decor, quiet, great location, great service, decent pricing and impressive menu. Park at the Ritz for $12. I'd gladly take clients there."

  • "I have been here before- they definitely change their menu often- last time I was there I had amazing short ribs- it wasn't on the menu this time- this time I didn't like the menu as much- choices were duck, lamb, stew, steak and vegetarian pasta. I had the ricotta gnochi appetizer- that was delicious- my dinner was good but not something I would look forward to again. It was the fish special- it was crushed white fish- I actually can't even remember what kind. Just good- nothing I would rave about. I would try again but definitely check what the daily menu was."

  • "Ris is one of the best restaurants in DC. The food is excellent and there are healthy choices. The desserts are in a class of their own."

  • "We had early bird dinner - a fairly good value - salmon was well cooked - salad could have been stronger - dessert was sorbet & cookies. Cookies could have been tastier."

  • "Ris is a total experience that delights. From the exquisite art emanating from inside the kitchen to the paintings, tapestry subtle lighting outside, to the finely orchestrated flavors and aromas wafting from the fresh and inventive food alchemy the discerning eater will feel fed on every level. Ris is held steady by the heart and intellect of its namesake chef. Our group of 5 psychotherapists concurred diagnostically...Ris knows how to feed the body and the mind."

  • "We very much enjoyed eating at Ris. The greens salad, the Portuguese seafood stew and the grilled fish of the day were outstanding. And the crunchy chocolate Napoleon dessert was delicious. The service was friendly, polite and discreet. We highly recommend Ris to anyone who wants a good dining experience."

  • "I took two out-of-town visitors to RIS, and they were delighted by the experience. We sampled three different entrees and two desserts, and all were outstanding. The only problem was the service -- our waitress failed to appear (we waited a long time between being seated and getting menus) and disappeared for long intervals throughout the meal, which therefore lasted considerably longer than it should have. The noise toward the front of the restaurant was very loud -- there was a shouting group at the bar -- but toward the back where our table was located, the noise level was fine."

  • "Was attending a wine tasting at RIS and decided to come early for a quick bite. Sat outside since it was nice evening. The service was good. Specials sounded interesting and menu had lots of unique offers. My friend and I decided to split a salad and the fish special. The kitchen split both dishes so they came out nicely presented for both myself and my friend which was a nice touch. The food was excellent. Fresh and nicely prepared. Great portion sizes. The wine list was decent. Since we were there for a tasting we only looked at by the glass. I would absolutely come back here again. I did notice the restaurant was very loud inside and I am not sure I would enjoy the noise level if I sat inside."

  • "We had friends here from out of town and had an early dinner after visiting the Smithsonian museums. Ris proved to be a perfect venue. The meal was splendid, the service excellent and the ambiance was lovely. We had a quiet table in the back that gave us a chance to talk and savor our meal. My husband and I had the rockfish special, our friends had quail and lamb, all of which was delicious. Everyone enjoyed the evening very much. Recommend it highly."

  • "When we arrived (with reservations), the hostess tried to seat our group of four in a stuffy, dismal little room in the back, despite the restaurant being only a quarter full. When I asked to be seated in the main dining instead, she hesitated, then said, "Wait here... I'll have to check." Eventually she returned said we could sit in the main dining room after all -- which seemed like a no-brainer since the room was so empty. The gundi was delicious, as always. My rockfish was good, but my husband's arrived at the table cold. Unacceptable... but since we were with another couple, he didn't want to make a fuss. It ended up being a busy Saturday night there, but even so, service was slow and inattentive."

  • "The dining options in West End DC are on the rise but somewhat limited. I chose RIS for its off-the-beaten-track, but-still-convenient-location for a business lunch meeting, and it's low ceilings with abundant use of fabric throughout the restaurant to reduce overall noise levels. All of that proved to be true. We ordered off of the special menu, the food was fine, and we were able to have a nice conversation without a lot of background chatter. The service was very attentive. Overall a solid 4 stars. And most importantly, I will come back again."

  • "Coffee was good but the food was just so so. Got the huevos rancheros which were alright but nothing special. The service was very slow and the waitress came after very long intervals."

  • "We both enjoyed the "Tasting Menu" very much. The courses were spaced perfectly. We were never rushed and had a very nice dinner experience."

  • "Ris has become our go-to place for dining before or after a performance at Lisner or the Kennedy Center. The food is always perfectly prepared, and the menu is always interesting. This time, the swordfish special was the best swordfish I'd ever eaten. My husband's duck was tasty and well-prepared, and his lemon cream pie wonderful - served with an intensely coffee ice cream. Our friends were equally delighted with their meals."

  • "Went to have brunch for my birthday. I will say I almost decided against RIS altogether because of a $25 charge PER PERSON for cancellations of parties of 8 or more because you never know what could happen, but decided to just go with it. Hostesses were so nice. Service was kind of slow and my mimosa wasn't refilled nearly often enough for the $18 I paid for bottomless. Food was just okay. My boyfriend ordered the burger....it looked more like a single slider. I was sent a dessert with a candle which was really nice. Other than that I was sadly disappointed with the rest :-("

  • "A visiting Ambassador asked that we eat at RIS. What an exceptional team, food and wine. The team was particularly helpful from telling me where to park nearby, seating me early (a nasty storm drove me indoors an hour sooner than I planned) to providing excellent but unobtrusive service. The combination of fresh ingredients and excellent preparation made the meal notable. I was much taken with their scallops margita and my husband said their French onion soup was among the best he has ever had. We are all had fish as a first course and careful preparation made each of these dishes excellent. The combination of anh affordable good Malbec and have bottles of Sancerre made it possible for everyone to have their choice of wine ."

  • "Ris has become a "must go" for me when I'm in DC. Regardless of the season or time of day, the food is perfectly prepared and seasoned, while beautifully but not fussily presented. The service and ambiance are welcoming and unobtrusive. At our most recent visit, the short ribs and lamb shank were perfect for the time of year. Equally impressive, the simply grilled salmon was cooked to perfection and wonderfully flavorful. Unlike so many "of the moment" restaurants, Ris offers consistent value in a wonderful, congenial atmosphere."

  • "Service was ok, although the waitress didn't have much of a sense of humor. We went for brunch and got the delicious basket of pastries to start. We also ordered salmon benedict, which only comes with one egg as opposed to two in most places. It's a bit on the pricy side if you order the bigger entrees. The benedict came to us with ham instead of salmon, but once this was corrected, the salmon benedict was delicious. Overall, good experience."

  • "RIS offers diners a comfortable mix of food and drink. It's a welcome destination for neighbors and visitors alike, all of whom can easily find something to their liking on the ample menu. The food is consistent, with good flavors, the tables are spaced far enough apart that the diners are not on top of one another, the service is attentive, and the prices are fair. All the reasons that keep people coming back."

  • "Enjoyed what could be a contender for the world's longest brunch at Ris! Good, interesting variety of dishes offered, the food came promptly, everyone's dishes together, and everything was very tasty. Our waiter was fun and responsive and seemed to be enjoying himself almost as much as us. Seating was comfortable and tables well-spaced. I cannot comment too much on the noise levels as I fear we were the loudest people there! Best of all were the bottomless mimosas that kept us going - staff gave no indication that we might be outstaying our welcome after nearly 5 hours! With thanks to the Ris team."

  • "The food and service where good maybe very good but not great. Something was missing to make it special. I am a foodie and never shy away from a $30-50 entree. But I want to feel satisfied when I leave. We had a $50 per person evening without wine dessert or drinks and to be honest, I wanted to get a burger on the way home. I know this sounds bad but the food was exceptional portions are probably even big enough but after apps and entree and salad I don't want to feel like eating more"

  • "I go to Ris for client and department lunches, and I almost always order the fixed price seasonal lunch, and it is always very good. This time it rose to outstanding, as I had the best pierogies of my life (apologies to my wife's Polish family). The beet-colored salmon was delicious, and I left the waiter talk me into the Russian honey cake."
