Diner Reviews
  • "Two of us went there for lunch and we both had the tomato soup and grilled cheese. Loved it!"

  • "Kudos to RIS' management and staff for achieving a level of service and execution I often associate with New York City or San Francisco rather than the still maturing DC restaurant scene. I appreciate the non-intrusiveness of the wait staff in approaching my table when I am holding a business conversation, and especially the very elegant and professional hostess and the genuinely warm and friendly bartender. RIS seems to get these aspects right and recognizes the nature of its clientele and treats it with a higher level of sophistication. I wish other restaurants would get this. I don't usually judge restaurants based on their lunch menus but I commend RIS for putting thought and execution to all the dishes we ordered."

  • "Varied menu. Well-prepared food.. How many restaurants have butterscotch pudding these days!"

  • "Been here for lunch twice and it's always great. Terrific for business lunch. Have to come back for dinner."

  • "Personally, I prefer the somewhat more detached style of French waiters. The efforts to be warm and ingratiating are lost on me. But the food here is just spectacular, and the decor is, too. This is my go-to restaurant for a special, in-town treat."

  • "Nothing about RIS stands out. Is this a new restaurant concept? An independent restaurant that studiously mimics the blandness and colorlessness of the most generic hotel restaurant you can imagine?"
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "The food was really good. They have a bread basket you can get with homemade preserves that is really good. THE BEST MIMOSA ever.......they had a Pear Vanilla mimosa which was so good, forget the regular mimosa! Service was EXCELLENT too. We were seated right away."

  • "I have loved Ris since the moment I set foot in this establishment a year ago and it has remained consistent. I love to go for brunch as they have the best fresh baked breads ever! Specifically, the biscuits are melt in your mouth delish! Additionally, I always have to see the dessert menu before ordering my meal because depending on what they have to go with their homemade ice cream, it's work trying. The food is always hot and flavorful. They don't have a huge selection of items on the menu, but it's enough to accommodate everyone and all quality food. I say it's a must for brunch."

  • "Our most recent dinner at Ris was superb. The food was all extremely well prepared, particularly the grilled octopus salad. The service was cordial, friendly, and very efficient. The pistachio Pimm's Cup was an unusual and very tasty cocktail. Portuguese seafood stew was a fine combination of various types of seafood in a sauce that was spicy but not overwhelming thickened just a bit, not too much, with chickpeas. Ambiance is good with an attractive and comfortable dining room but no view. The place is not dressy--few men wore ties, many were very casually dressed even on a Saturday."

  • "RIS is our go-to restaurant with delicious food, gracious and efficient service, and an atmospher which allows us to converse with each other and our guests."

  • "We've been here 3 times total, one of which was our post-wedding brunch with our closest friends and relatives. With all the choices in the DC area, it should mean something that we'd go back a few times. Menu doesn't overwhelm with choices, but every ingredient is picked with care and the dishes are great. Admittedly, we were there to kill two birds with one stone: get a guaranteed good meal with family and buy Great Falls Earl Grey tea leaves - this is one of the few places left to buy a wonderful Earl Grey tea blend after the closure of the coffee/chocolatier shop in Georgetown!"

  • "RIS is consistently a great dining experience! The wait staff is knowledgeable and attentive. The food is always delicious and beautifully presented. The desserts are amazing! Whether you are dressed casually or celebrating in style, RIS always makes you feel welcome."

  • "this is a perfect place for a dinner where you really want to talk to people. Delicious food and excellent service. And no music playing so you can really talk! Great find."

  • "We tried Ris and the food did not disappoint. A decent drink selection (including for the beer drinkers in the party). Many of us selected from the pre-marquee menu and were pleasantly surprised. The skirt steak was melt in your mouth and soup of the day--carrot ginger--was excellent with a little surprise of pineapple bits. Despite stating we had to make a show at the Kennedy Center, service was slow (and our waitress disappeared for quite a period) so we rushed through the end of our meal, grabbing a cab and making it to KC with only 2 mins to spare. Nice ambience, it felt like a real "grown up" event, great food."

  • "Early lunch allowed us to partake in the regular Lunch plan for that day and it was outstanding. After eating here 4 or 5 times in the past year, we have been impressed, not only with the selection but also the consistency of high quality."

  • "I have always had wonderful experiences at RIS -- the food and service have been fantastic until my last visit. Now I'm not sure we will go back. The shrimp appetizer was subpar, along with the skirt steak and the halibut. As always, the gnudi and scallop margarita were delicious. The service was still great... I will also plug the meatballs @ the RIS booth @Union Market. They are truly a comfort food."

  • "Great location in DC area. Appetizer was absolutely unique and wonderful, as was entree and dessert. Fairly priced as well."

  • "The food and atmosphere at RIS were terrific... The only issue was multiple fire trucks, police sirens , and tons of traffic while we dined outdoors."

  • "Wanted a place to take a special friend. Needed good food, drinks and where we could talk. Our Number 1 place NEVER lets us down! RIS has all of that and MORE!"

  • "Sat at bar table, friendly service until happy-hour crowd power in. Great kimchi-fish taco. Loved the asparagus-mushroom side dish."

  • "I have been to RIS on several occasions. This restaurant is a great place to eat. Always consistent and their menu this Spring is outstanding. It was delicious. The only thing is the wine I had chosen was not in stock. That's one pet peeve of mine. Make sure the bar is always full. I can understand if I was there on a Tuesday since they had just served for the weekend but we were there on Thursday and the wine should have been available. Anyway enough said. I am certainly not bashing this restaurant. I have been to many amazing restaurants across the world and this ranks as one of the best in my book. I will be back soon. Bon appétit !!!!"

  • "Ris Lacoste was the mainstay at 1789 and she has only upped her game at her own place. Beautiful venue, with private dining rooms for parties; not noisy-why do several new hotspots think that it's chic for diners to shout at one another? Most important, the menu is creative but not eccentric, and the preparation and presentation is spot on. We've been several times, once with friends from France who are quick to "dis" less than the best, and we will keep coming back. If you have not, make a reservation. Soon!"

  • "I have now eaten at Ris 4 times and have not been disappointed. The food was great. The service was great as well. I am not a fan of tables for 2 pushed close to one another, but the good news is that the people on either side were great. I was there for a special occasion and would have preferred a bit more privacy. I will go back."

  • "We love eating at the bar at Ris, and in the summer, sitting outside with a few friends is fabulous. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, and the food is great. One special things is that while you can have elegant meals (I love the mussels which are very nicely done) but there is always comfort food available. What a good balance that is. Something for everyone."

  • "Possibly the nicest, most thoughtful staff we've encountered. Will be back just for this reason. We were short on time as we were attending a concert at the K-Ctr, yet were still able to relax and enjoy a pretty good meal. Rack of lamb was the special and was perfectly prepared. Crusted halibut was average, but good. Made the concert in plenty of time."

  • "Dropped in after seeing "Smokey Joe's Cafe" at Arena Stage. Used an Open Table check to defray the cost of the meal. My girlfriedn liked her aspagus salad and lamb shanks entree. My shrimp tempura appetizer was delicious and the skirt steak cooked well as ordered. The high point of the meal for my companion was the take-home serving of cookies. Service was friendly and attentive."

  • "Wonderful meal, as usual. Our first time for brunch. Great takes on corned beef hash and huevos rancheros. There were many more things on the menu that I wanted to try. Interesting mix of small plates and entrees."

  • "I've enjoyed RIS restaurant for years. On a recent occasion, a friend complained about his lamb chops being salty. a fellow diner tasted the gentleman's spinach and did find it to be salty. They surmised that the kitchen, in salting the spinach may have salted the lamb. Individual complained to waiter. It seems that waiter and another staff member misunderstood. The lamb was taken back to kitchen, but was returned somewhat overdone. Friend assumed that waiter mightn't have understood that the problem was saltiness. I have loved the butterscotch dessert at lunch for years. At dinner recently, the butterscotch was toped with a delicious dark chocolate . Unfortunately, the chocolate OVERPOWERS the butterscotch."

  • "We have now eaten at RIS 6 or 7 times and taken family and friends there after raving about the food and have never been disappointed. It so nice to have a good eating and attractive place meet expectations when out of town company come to DC. "

  • "The Portuguese seafood stew is the only reason you need to visit Ris. I'm a great home cook and generally eat better at home than at many restaurants. The Portuguese seafood stew at Ris is way beyond what I could, or would, make at home. In fact, it was better than any seafood stew I've had at any restaurant before. There were so many interesting things on Ris's menu that I'm looking forward to returning many times."

  • "Came here for Mother's Day brunch. Was a beautiful day and they were able to fit our group of 7 on the patio which was perhaps the best part of the entire experience. Our server was friendly, and fairly attentive, but she wasn't the most helpful. When asked what flavors of sorbet - she was confused about which flavors they had and didn't try to go clarify with the kitchen. We had various small plates and entrees between our large group - all of the food was delicious. Nothing particularly "outstanding" but certainly good. The real downfall was the slow service - 1 entree came out 5 minutes later than the rest, a few of our side dishes didn't make it to the table until we were nearly done our entrees and dessert was a good 20 min wait.
