Ripasso was a wonderful dining experience from start to finish. Our waiter was very attentive, cocktails were so tasty followed by very savory appetizers and a main course. The food was outstanding! We also finished dinner with some very delicious desserts and wine which were the perfect end to a great dining experience. Definitely coming back!

We live a couple blocks away and have been wanting to try Ripasso. We were so impressed! We are both first generation born in America with full Italian decent, and were very pleased with the menu options! The homemade pasta melts in your mouth. The service was very friendly and helpful. And delicious bar drinks as well. We will definitely be back!

The food was all very bland and under seasoned. We tried the meatballs, anchovies, rice balls, porchetta, and Brussels sprouts to start. We then split the squash pasta and the pappardelle. The pasta was better than the starters, but still not overly memorable. With all the amazing Italian in this city, you can skip Ripasso.

Thoroughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Ripasso. The menu was interesting but also comfort-foody and delicious. It was a nice mix of homey and sophisticated dining. I will definitely make this resto a regular.

I won't be back to Ripasso. At that price point, I want everything to be absolutely perfect and unforgettable. My two dining partners and I ordered everything on the menu -- that is to say, we each ordered an appetizer, pasta, entrée, and a bottle of wine, and shared them between us. The pastas really stand out and have excellent flavor. The appetizers and entrées were just OK -- nothing special/I could make it at home with the right ingredients. The service was fine, although I wasn't sure who was who; after being seated by the host, we started with one waiter, then another, and ended with a third. The bartender wasn't working and we were abruptly told not to order cocktails. Nothing seemed to add up: *except the bill*!!

  • Have been curious about this
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005
    Dined on 9/30/2012
Have been curious about this restaurant based on the very positive reviews on OpenTable versus never seeing many patrons inside when passing by, so decided to try it this past weekend. Generally the food is quite good - white anchovy with preserved lemons are excellent, the chicken is beautifully done, and the pappardelle with white truffle was truly a great pasta dish! On the other side of the coin the oysters rockefella, ragu of white beans and mushroom, and folletti pasta dish were rather disappointing. The service is both energetic and helpful however the general feel of the place is a bit cold. Understand that they're changing the interior to move the bar to the front. May try it again for a glass of wine and an appetizer.

Wrote a good review maybe a half year ago or so the first time we dined there. We had another great experience sitting in the rear bar area elevated above the main sitting area. We love it there and ask to sit there. It's seems somewhat private and removed from the hustle and bustle of the up front area. We has crostini appetizers with thinly sliced pork tenderloin, arugala and an aioli rosemarry that was to die for. Had oysters 'rockafella' that would have had us die twice. Then entrees of trout for my wife and a chicken half for me that was cooked so perfectly with mashed potatoes that swiftly disappeared with the help of my date. I'm going back to this place!

This is absolutely our favorite restaurant in Chicago. Every item they offer is stellar. The chef & his family (who run the front of the house) are so friendly too. We followed them from their former restaurant, Terragusto, & somehow at Ripasso they have improved upon their already delicious recipes. We hosted a large family & friends party here and everyone was impressed. The staff made it so easy; all we had to do was show up.

Though the prices were reasonable, given the type of restaurant it is trying to be, the portions were a tad small. The food itself was as good as it needed to be, but the menu is not very robust - not a lot of choices. None of us was overwhelmed. We hated our table. We sat at a bench that was extremely uncomfortable, the seat was too tall for the two people in our party whose feet didn't touch the floor. The worst thing, however, was the noise. The cacophony of 20-somethings screaming to be heard over each other in the echoing din was just too much. All these elements combined made it a restaurant I will never visit again - there are simply too many other fine choices out there.

My wife and I walked into Ripasso on a Sunday evening with a reservation and were seated promptly. Restaurant is small and fairly intimate. It was about half full and noise level was very low - was nice to not have to shout my conversation. Waitress was very knowledgeable of food and wine. Ultimately we had the 7 course chef's menu. The homemade pasta was sensational as was expected, but we were particularly impressed with the other courses. Waitress was prompt and attentive and did a great job explaining each course for us. I'll definitely visit again!

  • It was difficult to order
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012

It was difficult to order a drink since the names of the cocktails did not give any information to what is in it, what it was or what it will taste like. I ordered a specialty cocktail that filled 1/4 of the glass. I was like, "Is this it? Where's the rest of it?". Although the meal was delicious, the proportions were small. I would either make the proportions bigger, or include a side, especially for the price! The ceiling was also leaking condensation on all the guests who were sitting above the pipes. For a pretty humid day, the doors should have been closed in the first place to avoid this from happening. It was also very loud, which normally I don't complain about, but I definitely couldn't hold a conversation. Not sure if I'd go back.

Having eaten at Terra Gusto (now closed) we brought friends there looking for amazing Italian. Not the case. Food wasn't bad, but nothing special. A very young criowd in the hub bub of wicker Park, too casual for a Friday night, for my taste. It definitely lacked the homecooked, bountiful, chef prepared flavor of Terra Gusto. Waiter sort of disappeared when we arrived, rather blase. By the way, i really dislike martinis served in an ordinary tumbler. We won't go back, and based on this experience we will probably bypass this neighborhood in the future.

The pastas are definitely the star here, especially the papardelle with Bolognese sauce and any risotto special. Non-pasta dishes are fair, it may sound trivial but please warm the plates!! From the host to the bartender to our server, the service was excellent but casual as well. Nice staff and great menu but family style prix fix was a rip off. Basically 4 people were served regualr portions cut in quarters. Not really a family style experience. Especially the dessert. We selected the mousse would came in a glass slightly smaller than a high ball - now how is that a dessert for 4 people. We even asked before we ordered and had been told that it is 4 portions, but just a regular order. So may go back, but would never order the family style prix fix.

When we arrived we were greeted by an 8-10 year old girl whom we accused of being the maitre d'. She blushed and her mother walked up and introduced herself as the owner and married to the chef. I love these places! We were offered a table in the main body of this store front restaurant, or a table near the back, elevated bar section. Three steps up in the back and there's a bar along the back wall and 2 or 3 tables for two on that elevated bar section. Great view toward the front window from way back. Almost secluded, certainly romantic. But we can do that almost anywhere.
