Diner Reviews
  • "Had the halibut and the marinated flank steak, both very good. The dinner choices were very appealing."

  • "Located in a shopping mall, we were frustrated with poor service and small portions. Three orders were wrong and it took a long time to get the food. They actually made substitutions to our order without asking and then were surprised when we objected. Although they claim to be gluten sensitive on their website, normally gluten free foods like potatoes are prepared with oil also used for flour containing foods. This made the menu very difficult to navigate. My main course salad was wilted and small compared to the table next to ours which was fresh. I almost stood up to leave. I did leave early and let my husband pay the bill. "

  • " Lots of people there enjoying themselves. I made a poor food choice. When bought to table, the bad odor turned my stomach. It had a foul odor. Tasted. Was not tasty. Was going to just eat vegetables, but had the stinky sauce all over them also. Tried, but had to ask for something else. Burger. Waitress was not pleased and didn't even ask what I wanted on it. When arrived, no condiments. Ate it dry. Wasn't seasoned. The waitress did come back later and I could tell her attitude was much improved. Just skipped dessert, coffee and went back to hotel. I was alone and did not feel comfortable here. Could not say don't go here, but I made a poor food selection. I am a seasoned goer. I would say, proceed with caution."

  • "We drove to Carmel for the day.It was our anniversary and wanted to go someplace good. We made a reservation and were treated to a nice table with a big heart drawn on the paper cloth filled with rose petals. Very special! The food and service were very good, as usual, and the choices great. One of us is not a meat eater and the other one is so the menu is perfect for us. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and were too stuffed to even consider dessert."

  • "We were vacationing in CA and didn't research restaurants ahead of time. This was recommended by our hotel and we expected little from a restaurant in a strip mall. What a pleasant surprise! Really excellent food from appetizers straight through to dessert. Incredibly reasonable prices for the quality of the food and service. We ate there 2 nights and Rio Grill was consistent as well. Vibrant atmosphere. High scores on all counts!"

  • "A nice change from the cute, intimate restaurants of Carmel. This looks like a big mall restaurant and it is but service and food are like the fancier places only way more casual. Try the artichoke appetizer-yum! After eating fancy for several days, we enjoyed salads and pastas and some very nice wine at Rio Grill. We visit Carmel about once a year and always have 1 dinner at Rio Grill."

  • "This excellent restaurant is a bit outside of the flow of tourists in central Carmel. We have found after several visits that the food, ambiance, and service quality are consistently great. The wine list is extensive and the wait staff is skilled in making suggestions that complement the unusual selections from the menu."

  • "Went back after a long absence, had a fantastic meal. So much on the menu to choose from, makes it difficult to decide. My wife had the pumpkin crusted salmon with red bell pepper mashed potato cakes and I had the quick fried pork shank with Chile Verde sauce, we settled on the roasted banana cake with ice cream for dessert. All outstanding and very creative in taste and presentation. The service was terrific and attentive; make sure you ask for Gabe. Would highly recommend eating here if you have the opportunity."

  • "I have gone to Carmel many times and usually visited Bahama Island Steakhouse. Well, they suddenly closed, so I decided to give Rio Grill a try since it's been there for a long time. I was so happy that I did! They seated us quickly on both occasions, and the food was delicious! Service on seating and waiting was excellent. Prices are a little high, but that is common for Carmel. Unique dishes, and everyone in our party of 7 was happy with their selections (salmon, skirt steak, ribs, half chicken - all great!)"

  • "Every time we go to Carmel, we have our first dinner at Rio Grill. Its tradition now! The food is delicious and the service is friendly and prompt. The specials are always amazing and the regular menu delicious! They are also very accommodating with any variation on the dishes. Wine list is extensive and the drinks from the bar very consistent and good. Great children's menu as well!"

  • "The place to visit when in Carmel. The locals love Rio Grill and as frequent visitors, so do we. The wine listing is varied and it is hard to make a decision. The food is always excellent. Very fresh and different. We always make a point to visit when in town and we recommend it to everyone headed in the direction of the Central Coast."

  • "Rio Grill rarely disappoints. Food is always fresh, well prepared and yummy. Noise level can get a bit loud, but that is to be expected given the popularity. Great place to meet pals, take the family out or meet for a drink."

  • "From the double-smoked bacon appetizer to the stuffed poblano chili and angel-hair pasta entrées to the chocolate flan dessert, Rio Grill completely hit the spot for my husband and me before we attended a concert in Carmel Valley. The perfect stop between wine-tasting in downtown Carmel and the lovely concert. Thank you, Rio Grill, for being in the right spot with the right food with the right venue and mood for everyone--the casual crowd to the two of us in our concert attire."

  • "I dine here often. I love the food-not only is it delicious, but the portion size is just right. Really huge plates of food are a turn-off for me. Service is exceptional. One of our favorite appetizers is no longer on the menu; no problem they made it for us! Specials are always worth a try, but basic menu is excellent and there is something for everyone. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area."

  • "Hi. Food and presentation were great! We were there on a Friday night 5:30 - 7:00pm in the rear dining room and had to shout to each other to hear one another because the folks in the bar were so loud."

  • "We love the Rio Grill, we've been going here for years and it never fails to impress me. I love that the owner comes around and greets everyone. The food was amazing and very well priced for what we received. If I had one complaint it would be that the food came too quickly, and the staff was so on top of things we were in and out in about 50 minutes on a Saturday night when we wanted to sit and relax and dine."

  • "Four of us ate dinner there early Saturday evening - 6pm. Very busy, energetic, fast paced staff. Good start with recognition of requests made through Open Table reservation. Once seated, the service did not translate to the servers, wait staff, hostess. I ordered a bunless burger and it came to me with bun on. Hostess response, "well that's easy enough for you to take off." She also did not listen to my other request for more ketchup. Table service staff was rushed - quickly plunking down our dishes and rushing off (I tried to catch his attention - no luck) I must say our actual wait person was good. Three out of the four of us left with a bad taste in our mouths, even though the food was pretty good, except for one luke warm soup."

  • "We eat at the Rio Grill whenever we travel to the Monterey area. We have never had a bad meal or overall dining experience. The grilled chicken with artichoke is a spectacular dish. Service and ambience are top of the line."

  • "The Rio Grill is our go-to place whenever we want a particularly good dining experience. We have favorite dishes, but the chef always offers a few specials that are tempting. This time, my sweetheart and I chose new dishes and both were as delicious as our favorite dishes (i.e., wonderful). The special bison lasagna was delicious. The waitstaff was attentive to our needs but not overly so. We are always greeted at the front of the restaurant politely and with a smile."

  • "We went for an early Valentine's Day dinner. They provided a rose to each female in the group (another table had kids and the girls got them also). The dinner specials revolved around lobster. Overall, we had a good time and the service was outstanding. The food arrived with good timing. The spicy calamari was enjoyable (the sauce was more Asian then spicy). The meals were good and the wood fired cauliflower that came with my steak was tasty. We both has dessert. The final price was a little high for a normal night out but given the occasion it was reasonable for Carmel."

  • "Rio Grill is a classic place for lunch or dinner. They keep a diverse set of menu offerings and unique specials each day. The Chef does a very nice job in both cooking and the way the food is presented. The waiters are attentive during the meal to make sure everything is ok. While we didn't use the bar on this trip, it is a lively spot for people to meet. Great parking a real plus. Have had some very good group dinners in the private dining room."

  • "Rio Grill has been a very solid performer in our local restaurant scene here in Carmel. Located in the upscale Crossroads Shopping center. The food, service and feel of the place is far above excellent. Our meal their with friends did not disappoint and they have managed to keep menu prices very reasonable. Highly recommend for locals, tourist and those just passing through on Coast Hwy 1 in Carmel, CA.."

  • "We had a great experience at the Rio Grill. Glad we had a reservation, it was a Saturday night and they were extremely busy! The service was very good, attentive, knowledgeable. The food was delicious, and my first experience with the drink menu being on an ipad. Very good mixed drinks (can't remember the names at the moment). We would definitely go back when in the area again."

  • "I travel to Carmel 2-3 times a year, and almost always eat at the Rio Grille during my stay. It always hits the spot. It is large enough, so that you don't need reservations weeks in advance, has a great selection of steaks, prime rib, seafood and fish, and the staff is always very friendly. This week was the AT&T golf tournament. So, it was busier than usual. We arrived at 8:00, which was rush hour. However, the staff did a great job in keeping things moving with smiles on their faces all the way through. The food was excellent. I got my normal--New York steak, salad and Castroville artichoke. Perfect. I recommend the Rio Grille highly."

  • "Very energetic atmosphere. VERY LOUD, and certainly no place for a quiet peaceful dinner out. Food is up and down. Some dishes very good...duck tamale great...some dry and tasteless. Empanadas terrible. I don't know why they call them empanadas, because they were nowhere near anything resembling an empanada. Cheddar biscuits need great improvement. Tasteless and dry. Their wine list very poor, especially by the glass. Not much to choose from. Service was very minimal and really needs improvement. With sooooo many places to choose from in the area, I do not think that I will be returning to this one. It has a good reputation, and I think that at one time they must have been very good..but..a reputation can only last so long."

  • "Great food, nice menu, decent wine list, but very loud all the way through the restaurant. It was hard to talk at out table and impossible to talk as we waited 45 minutes past our reserved time. Had to go outside to wait."
