Diner Reviews
  • "The food was really good, the overall service was rather good as well, walking that fine line really well between constantly there and checking on us and giving us our privacy. We had a really nice evening and weren't disappointed with any of our menu choices. Tragically there was a downside though, when we first arrived the maître d' was rather swamped and she appeared rather stressed about the situation. Apparently a few of us with reservations all arrived right around the same time and there were a few takeout orders being completed at the same time, I agree that would be juggling quite a few things at the same time. However as she is the face of the restaurant, the first experience I had with them was less than great."

  • "Great service; very noisy but staff is great and food is very good."

  • "Food way to spicy, without disclosing that on the menu items. The wine list was very good, with very good prices. Friendly service. Makes no sense to have exceptional wines with spicy foods, as the wine is all but neutralized."

  • "Had a party of 9. We had a wonderful experience. Great restaurant with excellent services. Food was very good and seafood was very fresh. Will definitely go back there."

  • "what a treat... the quality food, the diverse/original menu, the excellent service... will they deliver to s. florida"

  • "Our server was so nice, but she was swamped. They just did not have enough help for a Friday night."

  • "I ordered the double pork chop, and it was great. My wife wanted fish, asked about the mahi mahi, but the waiter recommended the salmon. That was a mistake. It was farmed salmon, which would have been ok, but it was definitely not real fresh. Had a fishy smell and was mushy, not flaky. To his credit, the waiter took the item off our bill."

  • "As always, the Rio Grill offered a great selection of menu choices, lively atmosphere and good service."

  • "Rio Grill was amazing. 12 of us, traveling on a birthday/golf trip, ate here two nights ago. The drinks were so good, food (to a person) was out-of-this-world, and the banana cake? ridiculous! Go there."

  • "We had all appetizers because they sounded so good - and they were. Service was excellent. Our table was cleared of dishes by whomever walked by and saw that there were dishes to take. Reasonably priced. There is no entree on the menu over $30. They provided a nice dessert for my husband for his birthday and decorated the table."

  • "Three of us had lunch. The food was excellent and the service was good. The only problem was the noise level. It was very difficult to have a conversation at our table. We would all look forward to dining there again."

  • "Rio never fails to please. Vibrant atmosphere and flavorful food done and presented with their own personal flare."

  • "I like how the menu and the specials are constantly changing. The only downside to the dynamic menu is once my friend had the Mac n cheese lunch which was outstanding. But I've never seen it again. When it comes back I'm definitely going to have it."

  • "Had a late dinner at Rio, the Baked Potato (loaded) soup was great, the Butter lettuce salad was great. The dressing was wonderful (a little kick to it) and all the tastes were just right. The empanadas were tasty, excellent avocado sauce. The service was nice, not too pushy or overbearing...great evening."

  • "Glad we had a dinner reservation! Ordered and enjoyed the wedge salad and crab cakes for a light meal. Every table was full in the dining rom and bar."

  • "Rio Grill never ceases to amaze. The grilled artichoke was awesom, better than what we bought at Pezzini Farm market on the way back. Portions were awesome, took some back to the Motel. Motel gave a 15% discount which made it even more special for a dinner. Well recommended for price and excellent cuisine. "

  • "Went on a Friday night, when the noise level was oppressive, due to large groups celebrating birthdays and graduations in early June. Food is quite good. However, the prices of wine by the glass or the bottle were way to high! We have dined at many other restaurants in Carmel over the years and none of them charge these high wine prices. And options for wines by the glass were very limited. Pretty adjoining rooms are available for private parties."

  • "When traveling it was very helpful to get the reviews of other diners. But I could hardly believe all the ravings. Low and behold, they were right! Delish food, a very charming staff, and wonderful atmosphere. Well Done!"

  • "Booked for Sunday evening before Memorial Day, just as well as the place was packed. However the staff were not phased by this and provided excellent table service, good margarita, wine and great food.First time at Rio Grille, unfortunately only on holiday here so unlikely to be able to return soon."

  • "LOVE the Rio Grill. Always great food & service...& memories, which is unusual when eating out. If you join their birthday or anniversary club, you'll get a postcard invite adding to your visit. One year they took a photo of our group for us to take, & decorated our table. This time we had a scrumptious dessert. The food has always been great, inventive (but not too inventive to enjoy), and the restaurant is full of lots of visual delights throughout. This time we had an especially nice server who also added flavor & memories to our event. So fun, tasty & terrific! A great addition to our anniversary trip to Monterey! Also, lucky us--turned out on Mondays wine by the bottle is 1/2 off! Must return soon.....loved it ALL!"

  • "We made a reservation and was given a dark table in the back, with plenty of bright tables in front. We asked to be moved and were crammed into a small table. It was a poor experience. There were many tables open and few for two - so they put us in a very small cramped corner when there were several options, to give us a larger table. Bad experience. The reservation thru Open Table meant nothing."

  • "Met with business associates for lunch. Good food, good service, comfortable table and attractive interior decor. We have lunch here often and it is consistently good."

  • "All four of us appreciated the amount of information on the ingredients in the food, as well as the way they were cooked. It was done in a way that was cordial and added to the dinning experience."

  • "My mother's day experience started when we arrived and were made to wait in the bar area for 45 minutes even though the restaurant did not look that busy. We brought our own wine (a good bottle) and we could tell the waiter was not pleased when he made comments about retail vs. the wines the restaurant ordered....not really his business since we were charged a $20 corkage fee. Ordered the New York steak at $38 only to find that it was tasteless and tough, not to mention overcooked. At this point, we just wanted to get out of there since the waiter never returned to ask how our meal was."

  • "Great food with interesting presentation and reasonable portions (not too much food). There's a great wine selection to complement the food. Wish they had more beers available on tap, though. We dine here roughly once per month. Service is always prompt w/o being smothering. The conversation at the tables alway seems lively, but there's ample space between tables, so you don't feel a part of them. It can get a bit noisy when there are large groups present; but there are several seating areas, should that be a problem. Reservations are essential on the weekend and during the week they're still a good idea. Try it. You will not be disappointed."

  • "Rio Grill did not disappoint after a long abscence. Service from Gabe was excellent in every way. Food was delicious, both regular menu (crispy pork shank) and specials (stuffed mushrooms appetizer and lobster raviolis). Beautiful and fun decor added to the ambience for a festive birthday celebration and Rio Grill even provided the confetti. We will be back!"

  • "I've dined at the Rio Grill for over 20 years when I visit the Monterey/Carmel area. Most recently, my wife and I had lunch there before returning to the Bay Area. Sadly, I think that RG has lost a step over the years. Overall, the dishes don't seem to have the verve and life that they did in the past - we've noticed this in our last few visits. The menu items are still "OK" - but that is exactly the point. The bread pudding, for example, formerly RG's signature dessert, has become mediocre - what a shame. The décor and ambiance save the experience. "

  • "We were visiting from out of state to run the Big Sur Marathon. We needed to find a gluten free menu and found that Rio Grill had several items. The food at Rio Grill was very tasty and also gave us a few items to choose from. It was a wonderful dinner."

  • "Get the artichoke. Plenty of options. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Wine list was reasonable compared to other restaurants in the area. "

  • "Everything on the menu sounds wonderful. But the execution of these good ideas was lacking. My wife's wrap was swimming in salsa that made the whole thing a soggy mess after just a few seconds. My Bison Sloppy Jose burger suffered the same consequence. I couldn't even find the Texas Toast as it had soggified and disappeared. The ambiance of the restaurant is perfect. Great art to look at. They need to work on their food!!!"

  • "There were four of us for an early dinner ahead of going down to camp at Big Sur the night before participating in the BSIM. We had a reservation and were seated immediately at a table that was comfortable for the four of us. We each had something different and all seemed to find their food very good. Service was good. When I asked about a local place where I could buy a little bit if ice for our small cooler, the wait person offered to provide us with the ice free of charge (and did). For me this type of "above and beyond" service sets a place apart from others. "

  • "It was definitely loud, kind of hard to carry on a conversation. Food was just okay, nothing special. We have eaten here a few time, the first time was really good, the other times have just been average and I always wonder if I'm ordering the wrong thing, but so far haven't found anything great since the first time!! Don't think I'll be trying it again!! "

  • "Located in a shopping mall, we were frustrated with poor service and small portions. Three orders were wrong and it took a long time to get the food. They actually made substitutions to our order without asking and then were surprised when we objected. Although they claim to be gluten sensitive on their website, normally gluten free foods like potatoes are prepared with oil also used for flour containing foods. This made the menu very difficult to navigate. My main course salad was wilted and small compared to the table next to ours which was fresh. I almost stood up to leave. I did leave early and let my husband pay the bill. "

  • " Lots of people there enjoying themselves. I made a poor food choice. When bought to table, the bad odor turned my stomach. It had a foul odor. Tasted. Was not tasty. Was going to just eat vegetables, but had the stinky sauce all over them also. Tried, but had to ask for something else. Burger. Waitress was not pleased and didn't even ask what I wanted on it. When arrived, no condiments. Ate it dry. Wasn't seasoned. The waitress did come back later and I could tell her attitude was much improved. Just skipped dessert, coffee and went back to hotel. I was alone and did not feel comfortable here. Could not say don't go here, but I made a poor food selection. I am a seasoned goer. I would say, proceed with caution."
