We frequent the Rio quite often and love them - they're one of our top favorites which is why we planned to have a birthday dinner here for my twin stepsons turning 20. The service was super slow this time (and we kept running out of water) and then in spite of calling ahead and letting them know about the birthdays (they do a little special something for bdays) they totally forgot about it :( This visit was just 'off' - an unfortunate thing for a bday celebration. We'll go back though because they're usually awesome.

  • OVERRATED and so disappointing

After living in the Boulder area for years I decided to check out The Rio based on numerous recommendations. I was so disappointed! I have had great margaritas with fresh lime juice, no mix and great tequila and The Rio margarita just wasn't 'it'. All you could taste was tequila and if that's what is considered a "great" margarita well I disagree. The salsa tasted like pureed tomatoes, no spice or flavor and the chips were stale. My steak tacos were bland and don't get me started on the rice and beans. Again, flavorless. It was one of the few times I could not wait for dinner to be over. Disappointed and really wanted to love having a good margarita place with good food locally instead of having to wait to fly to AZ to get it.

The Rio is differently one of our favorite spots to go for birthdays or other events. they are so accomodating with taking reservations for our big groups and having the table ready and set to go when we arrive. Our waitress this time was spot on with no mistakes and always being there to refresh our salsas or drinks as needed.

Rio Grande was somewhere my girlfriend and I had never gone before. We decided on this place because we both like Mexican food, and the food was great! She got a tostada and I got a smothered burrito. The best part of it all was that they were very accommodating to my Gluten Free diet and they even had a special paragraph in their menu about it. It is nice to see the awareness some restaurants have about food allergies. I really appreciated it! The only thing was that it was quite loud. I didn't realize the type of energy that was going to be at this place. Since it was Valentines Day and our Anniversary, I was expecting to go somewhere quieter. However, after getting used to the noise levels and energy, it still was a great date!

We have been to the Rio many times over the years. Our last two visits were a disappointment. The food was only okay. This time we noticed that our glasses were 3/4 full of ice when we finished our margaritas, so we suspect they are trying to cut corners by serving less drink and more ice. One thing we were always able to count on at the Rio was a really good margarita. There are lots of choices for Mexican food in Boulder now, so I'm not sure we'll be back.

If you like noise, mediocre food, happening scene, rocket-speed dining, you should choose the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant in Boulder. When ordering dinner, you can expect to get your food in 3 minutes. Then it's over. Table-turning is name of the game these days. Margaritas and food not extraordinary any more. If your goal is a Boulder "hot spot," this is it. Otherwise, there are many better places to eat and drink.

3rd time I've been here. I loved how potent the margaritas use to be, but this time they seemed real tame...for the price, I want to feel that buzz!! I thought the portion size was just okay for the price and would like beans/rice with my entrée to make it go farther. I was still a bit hungry after my measly burrito. Still, I like this place and the food is good.

An amazing visit to a Boulder classic on Saturday afternoon. It was 90+ degrees, and we really wanted to sit on the roof, but wondered if that was such a good idea in the heat. We got to the top and looked out over the roof at the large water feature, umbrella'd tables, Flatirons views and water mist floating out of tubes all over and under the umbrellas on the tables. The table we chose was amazingly comfortable. We didn't feel wet or hot--worked just like an evaporative cooler should, that mist. The food was fresh mexican, spicy for those who like hot (me), and a large margarita menu. A burrito and two Don Julio margs later, we sat, mouths happy, looking at the beautiful end-of-summer sky and foothills backdrop.

The food was good, the margaritas were ok but not the famous drinks we'd heard such good things about, but the service was abysmal. The waitress never even looked us in the eyes and did not spend more than 10 seconds at our table at a time, even while we were ordering. She didn't check on us except for once, and was rude and aloof and ran off before we could say a full sentence to her. She gave us our receipt with the regular prices on it instead of the happy hour prices (which was the whole reason we went there), and her receipt was under a guy's name - "Grant", which, unless she used her last name or had a boy's name, just seemed suspicious. She wasn't knowledgeable or personable at all; the busboy took better care of us.

First, I am a native Texan and was weaned on good authentic Mexican food. The food offered at the Rio Grande is some of the most authentic Mexican food that I have found in the North Denver. The service is great and while the indoor dining experience is nice, the outdoor experience either on the roof or the sidewalk along Walnut is perfect int he early to late evenings. I highly recommend the Rio Grande.
