The members of the staff were very prompt and friendly and were willing to accommodate anything. When we needed warm water for a bottle, it was immediately brought to us, no questions asked. It has added on and gotten even better. Our waiter, Les, was perfect. He was there when we needed him and not there when we were deep in conversation. We were catching up with friends we had not seen in 25 years, lots to talk about. However, we still managed a large order of the world's best onion rings, fabulous steaks, fish and Oregon Pinot Noir selected by Les. Oh, and let's not forget the creme brulee!! The price was not low but, 30 years later I can now afford to splurge on this Portland landmark. The food was superb. The steak and the prime rib were tender and juicy. And yes, James Beard was right - the onion rings are the best in the world. He was very professional and very personable; he made us feel welcome and comfortable, as did all of the staff. The newly opened "barrel room" is a great place to eat. We went there for my birthday dinner.
