A word from Riccardo Trattoria
Riccardo started his career at a very young age in Milan's prestigious "GIRARROSTO" family owned. Then, in 1982 he moved to the United States and he opened the famous Sonny Bono's in Los Angeles. In 1987 he started to work with his cousin Roberto Ruggeri (owner of Bice's Venture), with him he opened Bice New York, Los Angeles and many others around the world.

Now, after three years as Executive Chef of Bice in Chicago, and together with his wife (and sous chef), Veronica, and his cousin (and hostess), Barbara, he decided to continue his gastronomic artistry and creativity in his restaurant named after himself "Riccardo Trattoria."

Here through the craftsmanship of an Italian food connoisseur, dishes are prepared with an almost zen-like essentiality that has shaped Riccardo's professional and existential life course.

Recently dined at Riccardo Trattoria with a friend whom I hadn't seen for some months. We arrived separately and were each greeted by friendly hosts and a superb waiter. The food was delicious as was the wine, recommended by Giuseppe, the waiter. Always a great experience!

Maybe we just had a bad meal from the kitchen. The courses where so quick we felt rushed. The service was horrible. Non attentive, brash bordering on rude. I was never asked if I wanted a second drink. My glass just sat empty on the table. The only good part of the meal was the tiramisu.

This was our third visit to Riccardo Tattoria, and we were unfortunately very disappointed. Excellent in the past but so mediocre this time. Tuna had a fishy taste, risotto special mushy and bland, tiramisu flavorless. At these prices, the meal was unacceptable. We won't be back.

It was my second time at the restaurant and it didn't disappoint. Everything from the waiter, to the ambiance, to the food and desserts was great. Lobster Risotto was exceptional with nice chunks of lobster and perfectly cooked risotto. The pasta with porcini mushrooms and white truffle was perfect. As good as the entres were, the desserts we even better. Broad selection of offerings and specials helped everyone find something they like.

My friend and I ended up at Riccardo Trattoria because he had been craving carbonara all day. We got a last minute reservation for 8:30. (We got there really early, but the place was packed, always a good sign, so we waited for our table at the Riccardo pizza/wine bar across the street- also excellent.) the atmosphere at the trattoria was lively with a mixture of families, couples and groups. The servers were very friendly and attentive, even though they were busy. The carbonara was delicious, with just the right amount of "sauce" and the pasta cooked perfectly al dente. The mushroom risotto was excellent: creamy with just a little bite . We will absolutely go back. In a town FULL of Italian options, Riccardo is a stand out.

Riccardo Trattoria is a small gem of a restaurant with exceptional food, very warm yet professional service, and a strong neighborhood personality. We were only in Chicago for one night and found Riccardo via TripAdvisor. Sounded like our kind of restaurant and it was! Food was excellent, the highlight being a wonderful veal ravioli that was truly exceptional. Even though the restaurant is small, we were never rushed. Our server provided some excellent food recommendations and helped us on the wine selection. The place was full from the time we got there -- about 7:45 until after 9:30 -- and this was on a Thursday night. Fits right in with the Lincoln Park neighborhood! And only a short taxi ride from our Miracle Mile hotel.

My husband and I booked Riccardo's through Open Table. We wanted a 5:30 or 6:00 pm reservation. Neither was available. We expected the restaurant to be very busy when we did arrived at 5:00 pm for our reservation, but we were the only people there. You would think with only two people in the whole dining room, that service would be excellent, but our waiter was busy talking to other waiters. He was very polite and charming, but not very attentive considering the lack of customers. By 5:30 pm, our preferred reservation time, there were only two other tables of diners. We were wondering if Open Table is given only a few reservation availabilities by Riccardo's. The handmade pasta was delicious with wild boar ragout and tiramisu was fab.

Its worth checking out, but I thought the dishes were hit and miss. The fava been appetizer with black truffle and pecorino was very nice, as was the papardelle with braised goat ragu. The lamb chops were ordered medium rare but came rare, though the sauce that came with the dish was great. The key lime cheesecake desert was ok, and the coffee - both the decaf coffee and the decaf espresso - was just lousy. I had to return the coffee because it tasted like it had been sitting in the pot for an hour, and the espresso didn't taste much better. After the review in Zagat I expected better. I think they have potential, but really need to pay attention to detail in everything they serve.

My wife ordered risotto with seafood (mussel, shrimp and I believe scallops). The risotto was good, however the seafood items were cold! We had to assume these were not prepared freshly, but were frozen and not properly heated. Quite disappointing. My entree was very good, a penne dish. The waiter offered complimentary after dinner drinks after talking to the owner which we declined. When he delivered the the bill they had reduced the price of her entree by half. Also, I had asked for dessert menu. They provided a complimentary dessert which was great due to it being our anniversary. This may be picky, but I would have liked to just have the dessert menu and order what I would have preferred.

My friend and I dined here for the first time. I had the Veal Ravioli and it was very good. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the filling was flavorful. We both had a tri colored salad with baked goat cheese which may have been the highlight. The salad was perfect and I could have easily eaten just the salad and asked for more, it was so tasty. The breads are fresh and delicate. Small wine list..my friend was looking for a Chardonnay and only one choice but it is after all, an Italian restaurant. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Will definitely return.

Terrific REAL Italian restaurant. On our recent trip to Chicago (10/13/14) we visited several trendy hot-spot restaurants - none compared to this little gem. Everything was excellent, the calamari, veal saltimbocca, lobster fettuccine (daily special) and a basket of very good breads.
