A word from Rhubarb
Rhubarb, at the heart of Asheville on Pack Square, is a comfortable place for friends, families and strangers to simply lean in and enjoy the company-a place where food and drink is at its uncomplicated best. Chef John Fleer, a three time James Beard nominee for Best Chef Southeast has created a menu inspired by seasonal, local ingredients and pays homage to the bounty of regional and American cooking. A wood-fired oven and grill complement the rustic creations. Wine selections are entirely ecological and sustainable. The bar pays tribute to the early 20th century cocktail culture.

Sunday Supper, a three-course meal served at the Rhubarb family tables, is served each Sunday at 6:30. The Sunday Supper menu will be different from the regular restaurant menu and will reflect the bounty of the weekend markets presented family style. Also, a local guest farmer will host our weekly convivial community tables. It’s not just “farm to table”, it’s “Farmer to Table”.

Diner Reviews
  • "I was in charge of arranging a dining experience for 5 visitors, all VERY well-traveled so I was a bit concerned about my choice but I know John and his staffs work so I went for it. We had a great time, the food was amazing and I have never heard so many compliments at a meal and seen so many clean plates. My group was still talking about the experience the next day?"

  • "Although the food was good it was not what I would expect from an accomplished chef. The service staff were friendly but it appears that they seemed disorganized in the proper processes needed to provide excellent service. The outdoor patio was pleasant however the interior felt like a warehouse and was extremely loud."

  • "Amazing food, phenomenal service! Not sure I would go in a large group and eat inside. It's a bit loud. But what an amazing meal!! Definitely will be back!!"

  • "Rhubarb is a neat space in downtown Asheville. There was plenty of space outside for eating outdoors and people watching. The food was pretty good, but not outstanding. Our server was fantastic, which was a pleasant surprise after the lukewarm reception by the host. He helped us pick a delicious wine and made our dinner a fun experience."

  • "A friend recommended that we try Rhubarb. We aren't really foodies and were out of our element at a trendy place like this. We loved it. We had the Lobster Corndogs for an appetizer. I had the trout and my husband had the pork tenderloin. And yes, my son had a grilled cheese! The waitress was super helpful and even deboned the whole trout for me. She helped us interpret the menu. The prices were reasonable as well. Would definitely return when we get to Asheville again!"

  • "The restaurant is located in a very convenient central location, attracting a high level of pedestrian traffic. Dining area is decorated in a pretty cool retro style, but the lay out exacerbates the noise level, which at times is excessive. Good vine list, but limited menu, that is promoted as local organic. Pricing is too high for the quantity and quality offered."

  • "We made reservations here for a group of 4 ladies. We tried a little bit of everything. We shared salads, entree's and desserts. The cocktails were great!!! All the way around. The food was amazing. No cons to share - everything was perfect. We were celebrating a special occasion get together that only happens on a rare occasion and it was perfect for our dinner outing. The server was very professional, knowledgeable, prompt and kind. We will be back."

  • "Our first visit to Rhubarb proved it will not be our last. The mid-July day in Asheville cooperated with mild temperatures so we enjoyed sitting at a table on the outdoor patio, listening to a couple of musicians streetside. We started with a cheese plate and Prosecco. The diner may choose the cheeses from a selection or 10 or so and we appreciated that flexibility. Our entree was the double patty cheeseburger made from organic, grass-fed beef with a touch of Benton's bacon for extra flavor. Again there is a choice of cheeses- pimento, cheddar, or gouda, all served with hand-cut skinny fries. It was the best burger I have ever eaten and we were told they hear that from many other patrons. Be warned that parking is tricky downtown."

  • "My vegetarian wife and I were looking for a place nearby the brewery we were at for some last minute anniversary plans, when we stumbled upon Rhubarb on yelp. She was intrigued by the Gnudi (Ricotta gnochi) so we walked up the street about 9pm for dinner. THe place was quiet as the dinner crowd has mostly left so we had the place to ourselves. She got the gnudi and I got the sea bass and they were both incredible. We are foodies at heart and love creative flavor combos,, but the clever combinations of flavors the chefs created were surprising and perfectly executed. We savored every bite and loved the entire experience. The modern take on the flavors of Smores was a nice, delicate way to end the meal. Thank you! We can't wait to come back."

  • "We ate after 7/4 weekend. Place was quiet and they were out of our selected wine 'due to busy weekend'. Food was good, but not outstanding. Decor is 'industrial' and spartan. Okay if you like that kind of thing, but they should at least repair broken floor tiles. Server was knowledgable and friendly and outside tables were busy. Not a stand out experience for a town renown for good dining opportunities."

  • "Had Sunday brunch here - the restaurant was mostly empty. The cruffin (much touted on their sidewalk board) was not memorable - not bad, but certainly didn't live up to expectations. The omelet was mostly bland except for the caramelized onion. Potato hash-cake desperately needed seasoning - and when I think of "potato hash", I would have thought browned and some texture...neither was present. No issues with our service."

  • "My boyfriend and I visited Asheville this past 4th of July weekend. We dined at Rhubarb on Saturday, and celebrated my boyfriend's birthday. Everything from the food, the cocktails, service, and the ambiance was incredible! Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and helped guide us through his favorite menu items. We love trying different restaurants every time we visit Asheville, but Rhubarb is definitely our new favorite! Thank you for the great experience! We will be back! :)"

  • "First, the service was excellent. We were waited on by a variety of people, waters always being filled, and our main waitress was just superb and lovely. We started with a cheese plate, which I highly recommend. When we finished the bread it came with our waitress brought us more bread, no questions asked! The gin and tonic my boyfriend got was the best I've ever tasted. He had two appetizers for his dinner; lobster corndogs and a lamb korean-style dish. I have never seen him in such food heaven as when eating the lobster corn dogs. I got chicken, which was juicy and delicious. Overall the atmosphere is quaint, adorable, and romantic, and the service and food is top notch."

  • "This place is foodie paradise -- a creative menu that is well-executed, an excellent wine/beer/cider list (the cider is a standout), and engaged and very knowledgeable servers that can make your meal a real event. The atmosphere is casual and energetic, but don't let that make you think that they don't take the food and the experience very seriously. The only gripe is that their AC has trouble keeping up with the open kitchen's heat in the summer -- 80 degrees (yes, I could see the thermostat) is too hot for me to sit comfortably. That being said, I can't wait to go back when its cooler and dive into that menu again!"

  • "I always give a restaurant three tries. First, I appreciate the small and imaginative small menu. Second, the simple interior is comfortable. Last, a great location for people watching, and centrally located in downtown. I am very patient, and understanding, and not demanding. Each time I have eaten here, I come in with high hopes, and leave with an "It was OK" attitude. We were once seated promptly, but then forgotten about, and after about ten or more minutes, had to go back to host stand to inquire about service. It was prompt from then on, but no apology given. Another visit provided medium temperature food. Overall it was just good, but it is just another restaurant that hasn't raised the bar for Asheville dining."

  • "We got there and the seated us in main dining area overlooking an open kitchen that had this great wood fired oven. But this is in July and it made room too warm and so we sat outside which was nice but not as intimate as indoors. I would go back in cooler times. The appetizer was really nice, mussels, with fennel, not what I used to but very very good, maybe a bit on small size. In fact that is the theme for rest of meal. Food was really good, excellent in fact for my duck confit. But portions small. We shared the appetizer, had a full meal, shared a dessert but as you might guess, almost tiny. Ice cream scooped it seemed with a mellon baller? I did not feel full when leaving and it was over $100 meal. That is my only issue with place."

  • "Great concept especially in the "return to the 70's Asheville ambiance. Had an expensive bottle of wine that was "turning" and the manager agreed and quickly gave option to replace. Inside restaurant is very noisy..so we asked for outside which was much better except for the street guitar/drum and bell duo that set up right outside... I guess you have to expect this sort of "entertainment" in Asheville, but definatly took an edge off enjoying our meal. Would i recommend? Sure but with caveats.... menu is very different, lobster corn dogs with more scallup than lobster, goat cheese knudis that were well prepared but lukewarm ... i would suggest go early rather than later... might be less noise, distractions and faster delivery of food."

  • "Had Sunday Supper. There were only two of us but we sure were wishing we had friends traveling with us to join in the family-style meal. The food was wonderful and a great deal for the money. This is a great concept, whether you join for the communal Sunday Supper or bring only yourself or a small group, it is what we all love about food-creating memories with family and friends around a great meal, relaxing and talking all the while."

  • "This restaurant was featured in Southern Living as a great place to eat. Like most of Asheville, they had a focus on "farm to table" type cuisine. I had the trout. I am a sucker for fish and trout is not something I get to eat very often in FL. It did not disappoint, the fish was perfectly cooked and the herbs and potatoes were nice and buttery. I had a taste of my husband's desert and it was very good. We also shared the charcuterie tray for an appetizer. It was very good. The service was friendly, but not overly enthusiastic."

  • "The Sunday supper menu was delicious. The meal included several appetizers, several sides for the entree and a variety of desserts. I recommend this choice as a way to sample many of the offerings at Rhubarb."

  • "French toast was heavy and tasted like it was made from wonder bread. Omelette was greasy and totally uninspiring. We were very disappointed in the food and would not return for this reason. A great pity as service was good and the restaurant quite pleasant."

  • "Rhubarb seems to be trying very hard to accommodate the foodies. My wife and I being part of that group, found the combination of flavors, flavorless. The lobster corn dogs were okay, but the PEI muscles and the broth they came in, were The worst I have ever had. The salads were overdressed, the duck confit was overcooked, the server was pitifully ill prepared and inexperienced. I would recommend the noodle shop next door (which I'm not fond of) over this place. Aside from the location and the ambience, Rhubarb has missed the mark entirely in the growing world of upscale Asheville restaurants. This surprised me seeing as we waited over six months for them to work out the bugs and kinks. Need more training front and back."

  • "Our overall experience at Rhubarb was quite good, although in contextual reference to Asheville's other fine dining restaurants it is seemingly mediocre. The food flavors were quite magnificent, but the food pairings were not well thought out. Also, the portions were rather small, even for fine dining."

  • "We recently celebrated our anniversary at Rhubarb and had a great meal. The service was excellent and the food was too, with great New Orleans jazz playing at a perfect volume level. I don't know why this restaurant is not in the top 5 in Asheville on every food-oriented website. Highly recommended!"
