Diner Reviews
  • "Durham's old Magnolia Grill was reknowned as "Not Afraid of Flavor." Revolution seems to have taken that title as its guiding principle, as well. It's an ideal place to enjoy a strong selection of wines by the glass, accompanied by appetizers and small plates of distinctively spiced and combined food. The combinations were innovative, but not crazy - Ahi Tuna with wasabi caviar! Shrimp ceviche with green tomato gazpacho. Duck leg with kimchi and orange-black bean confit. Really smart recipes."

  • "Durham is further away than we can walk from Cameron Village, and more than a five dollar cab ride, so we rarely get way out there. Ringo Starr was playing at the DPAC so we had no choice. When we have no choice but to go to the DPAC, we almost always eat at Revolution. The food is damn good with excellent vegetarian options. We highly recommend it."

  • "I've been to Revolution a few times, and it's always been great. The food is amazing, the service is excellent, the atmosphere is just right. It's one of the few places where I can ALWAYS be sure that we're going to have an awesome time."

  • "We enjoyed our recent dinner at Revolution. Our favorite small dish was the tamales, although the little neck clams were a close second. The planked salmon was awesome and the snapper was equally amazing. We splurged on desert and had an exceptional red velvet cake and a very good chocolate mousse cake. Always a pleasure to dine at Revolution. Highly recommend it."

  • "First time at Revolution and had a good dining experience. The service was outstanding with all the wait staff pitching in for seamless service. I started with the watermelon/beet/arugula salad which was good but needed a more creative dressing to push it over the top. For the entree did the roasted red snapper with the avocado puree over a potato salad. The fish was slightly overcooked and I am still not sure of the potato salad pairing with the fish. The fish was basically plopped down on the potato salad. Didn't seem extremely creative to me. The avocado puree was excellent. I would definitely return but there is room for improvement. Good specialty cocktail selection and wine list. They were out of cabernet sauvignon (surprising)."

  • "Food was good and portion was large. Only thing is that the food is a tad bit too salty. I would definitely go back again."

  • "I've been here 3 times and always with "foodies" (which I am not), and I feel it's a very safe place to bring people who are hard to please with restaurant quality. I would definitely recommend it, especially for special occasions. I enjoy the food very much myself (although there are only limited vegetarian options, so I've only tried a few dishes), and I feel confident bringing others there. I imagine for a non-vegetarian, it would be even more exciting. :) Thank you for great food and polished service!"

  • "Revolution has delicious unique food, outstanding service and overall urban chic. My only complaint is the bad acoustics in the restaurant. Loved the experience and would go back again. Ideally located in downtown and only a few blocks away from DPAC."

  • "I think they went over and above this visit. Everything was beautiful, delicious, right temperature and service was excellent as well. I enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and "specialness" feel of the restaurant. Can hardly add anything to 5 stars indicated above."

  • "As is the case with most Durham restaurants, Revolution boasts wonderful food (although the single serving of pork loin was enough for two or more) and attentive wait staff, but it does so in an atmosphere that's more like that of a bus station than a restaurant. Drunken millennials sit and shout over each other, presumably so their important adventure tales can be heard over the din. In these older re-purposed Durham buildings, the ceilings are very high and virtually no attempt by management to do anything about soundproofing; that money gets spent on more tables to pack in as many people as possible, who all talk at the top of their lungs. Too bad, because the food was all exceptional at Revolution, from the salads to the main courses."

  • "I used OpenTable services to ensure a decent dining time and table. We were thrown into the basement room in the midst of several groups of diners without any chance to request for a better sitting location on the restaurant's main floor. If it wasn't for the great server, we almost got up and left. The menus are not presentable with several sheets held together by an over sized paper clip. Definitely a tacky look. The extensive wine list was disappointing at minimum. Along with the outstanding and professional service provided by our server the only other saving grace was the amazing food. It is clear that the best this restaurant has to offer is the chef. I will not be returning to the Revolution and certainly don't recommend it."

  • "Revolution is always a great dining experience. We went for Restaurant Week, and we both ordered off that menu. Both our meals came out together and hit and were so good. Our waiter, Jeff, was attentive, friendly and knowledgable. Cocktails and desserts were fun and delicious. We will be back!"

  • "Went there for Restaurant Week in the Triangle and had great food and top notch service. Had the pork belly w/creamed leeks for the first course, which was one of the best dishes I've had in a year or two. The Chef's "Feed Me" selection of fried monk fish and mussels was only okay but my wife's beef short rib w/mashed potatoes was awesome. The red velvet cake was a fantastic desert and the hazelnut chocolate mouse was okay. Portions were large and much more than we expected for the price and our waiter was attentive and the wine pairings were excellent. I've been here before and while pricey it was and remains a very good value. Will return and would highly recommend it to others."

  • "Despite a slight snafu in the reservation process, this was another excellent meal with above average service at this fine downtown Durham restaurant. Our meals were well prepared, nicely presented and served at the right temperature and, above all, were delicious. The wines and the drinks menu are both above average."

  • "We truly enjoyed our dinner on Saturday evening. 4 of us had the Feed Me dining special and were thoroughly entranced!"

  • "Food was good. Service was poor. We had a reservation at 5:45. The restaurant was not crowded and we told our waitor Ivan that we were to make a 7:30 DPAC show. We ordered drinks and dinner at. 6 and did not receive our main course until 7:05. We also asked for the bill at that time. Since I had recommended the restaurant to our group. I was embarrassed by poor service."

  • "I wanted to take my 14 year old daughter to a nice place to compliment her Christmas Present of tickets to DPAC and I found this place on line. The service was excellent (it's a joy to be served by someone who obviously loves their job), the food was exquisite and the atmosphere was striking. The only knock on the place was that they only have one toilet in each bathroom--meaning grown men had to wait like children at an elementary school. Overall, an excellent experience for my party of 6."

  • "My go to dish is the Poke Tuna. It's always good and a very generous portion. We really enjoyed the shrimp and avocado dish as well as the scallops. Love ordering several appetizers to share. Agave in Bloom is a delicious cocktail. "

  • "The menu is a gourmet delight. We had two of the large plate entrees and desert and espresso coffee. A good alternative are the fabulous appetizers and small plates. Either way the restaurant is in its 5th year in Durham and continues to be a find for eclectic but main stream menu, great chef and very attentive service but not intrusive service. On a rainy evening the free valet parking service was a blessing. "

  • "We had an amazing dinner here, everything was great. The elements used in both our meals was a perfect balance of flavors and taste. The ambiance was a bit bland, but the food is the focus here! Wonderful cocktails as well."

  • "Revolution is a nice place. Overall my mother and I were disappointed when we came to brunch for Mother's Day. Food was ok. Service was good. However, I get great service and great food at Elmo's and would've saved $100 and had just as good of a time. "

  • "Went here with my in-laws for dinner after graduation. Everything was delicious and the service was fantastic. My in-laws kept saying that "this is exactly the type of place we're missing where we live" and were still raving about it the next morning."

  • "This place was delicious, the service could have been a little bit better but it was not horrible. We ordered the Tamales, Salmon, Swordfish and Chocolate Mousse cake.. all of these were delicious and we finished it all! "

  • "The food was well prepared, but not all that interesting. The ambience is very festive, but with enough room between tables to allow conversation (a rarity in my experience). The nicest thing was our very capable and pleasant waiter, Ivan."

  • "Food was always great, and innovative and that is why we returned. This time we had two waiters, constantly interrupting us (though very nice) and a manager came over twice to check in. I ordered an entree from the menu and when it came, the dish was completely different and no explanation was offered. When I questioned it, it was explained it was my entree, but just "served differently", which was not the case. I was served an underdone fish with two sliced cold potatoes, a sliced grilled asparagus and a blob of sauce, which didn't fit for $24. The waiter apologized and comped us two desserts. That, and the threat of being seated in their dank basement space after making a reservation four days ahead was enough."

  • "We had a great time. We sat at the table by the front window which we've never done before and we loved it. If felt like a different restaurant - the front area is lighter and more open feeling, and its fun to people watch."

  • "I took my secretary to lunch at Revolution for Administrative Assistant Day. We had an hour to enjoy lunch before going back to work. When we arrived for our noon reservation, we were the only customers there. Shortly after we were seated, we both ordered the Monster Grilled Burger with paprika fries. We then waited almost 40 minutes for our order, which seemed excessive given the fact that we remained the only customers! At that point, we only had about 10 to eat before returning to work. Now I realize that Revolution didn't promise a quick meal but it did seem like the food took way longer than usual to prepare. To make matters worse, the Sanitation Rating was 93, a score more typical of fast food joints than high end restaurants."

  • "As a disclaimer, we are not typically fond of brunch buffets but that seemed to the the only option on Easter for lunch. On average, the food was generally good just not of the quality we associate with Revolution and certainly not 'special occassion'. There was a wide variety of options."
