A word from Resto
Resto, French slang for casual restaurant, opened its doors in April 2007. The concept of a laid back neighborhood gathering place with approachable Belgian food in the style of New York, was created by the owner, Christian Pappanicholas. Resto has become a destination in Gramercy Park/Murray Hill for a delicious dinner, weekend brunch or a late night bite. The knowledgeable and friendly staff is well versed in the extensive Belgian beer list and the thoughtful wine list which focuses on a selection of French, Italian and Spanish wines. The menu is crafted using traditional French technique, with an emphasis on seasonal, mostly local, farm fresh ingredients. Resto prides itself on elements like a revolving seasonal menu as well as large format plates such as Cote De Boeuf, Whole Roasted Pig or Lamb. Resto's dining room can accommodate 75 guests with 12 seats at the bar where we encourage full dining. We also have our baby brother "The Cannibal" next door; a retail beer & butcher shop.Continued

  • "we shared the lamb shoulder. There is plenty to feed three! would come back to try something else. This place is good for a date night or just to come with friends. One odd thing was we walked in and the hostess was having a conversation with another coworker at the restaurant and told us to wait. We watched them have a mini conversation and stood there and waited for like two minutes until she sat us. That was really weird.. and kind of rude. We were very dumbfounded."

  • "Owner Christian Pappanicholas and chef Preston Clark have made this one of my favorite dining destinations in the city. The food and the staff have been consistently top-notch in the near half dozen times I have visited this casual restaurant. With a tight, focused menu, it has been hard to find many flaws in any of the dishes. The lamb shoulder has been my favorite of late. It's succulent and flavorful. It's not cheap but it's well worth the cost and wait since it feeds at least six people with 'normal" appetite. At times the service could be slow especially during peak dinner service. This is offset by a friendly staff and there is always a knowledgeable sommelier-type to aid with drinks/wines."

There are many superior choices to Resto for brasserie type cuisine and the food did not equate with the overall pricing. It wasn't special enough. The bar looked lively and the bar menu seemed like a better way to experience Resto."

  • "I ticked off notable wine list but it is the Belgian and Belgian-style beer list at this place that is really notable. Very great beers presented in a fun way set inside actual books. The food was delicious also. We had a Restaurant Week prix fixe for $38 that came with a tasty pate appetizer, creamy and a little spicy cavatelli entree and a great chocolate cake/ice cream/cookie crumble dessert. Also had the short rib entree, which was fantastic, the haricots verts special with veal ragu (very good), and a bacon apple crisp dessert that was amazing. We were tucked at a table next to the bathroom and kitchen hallway and the tables were close together, leading to more than one person trying to squeeze between to use the restroom though."

  • "The flavor of my spare ribs was nice. The beef was cooked beautifully. But it was very fatty. I peeled off layers of thick fat. When an entree is $28 and smaller than my palm, I expect to be able to eat it all. Thank goodness for the frittes and other vegetables we ordered a la cart or I would have left starving."

  • "This little restaurant is right around the corner from my apartment, and I had been meaning to stop in for months and finally did this past weekend. The food was incredible! We tried the butternut squash, roasted cauliflower, veal, pork belly and octopus, and a special pasta they were serving that evening and loved it all. The butternut squash and the pasta were definitely our favorites. The service was great and the atmosphere in the restaurant was fun, but a little loud."

  • "We tried Resto purely for convenience - it was a very cold night and we did not want to walk far to find a place in the Gramercy neighborhood near Park Ave. I had heard Resto had a reputation for good burgers. Resto’s menu did not have much selection and the bar next door seemed more interesting than the dining room. We ordered a burger and crispy chicken with pesto sauce. The burger was very average and the crispy pesto chicken was just….. weird tasting. Resto's entrees don’t come with anything besides the meat you ordered - this isn't a high class Italian restaurant though! The entrees are overpriced given the number of other good restaurant options nearby, and I would not return."

  • "Let me start by saying the food was as always very fresh and tasty, but the service and the portion sizing has changed since my visit approximately one year ago. It seems since being named to the Michelin guide the portions have shrunk. That being said pricing has been maintained so I suppose you cant have your cake and eat it too? While the service was adequate i found it to be lacking in terms of assistance and meal customization. It seemed to be difficult to sub out Kale for spinach or mixed greens. Again nothing too egregious but definitely not the entertaining and informative service i had last time. Overall still a solid spot but perhaps a little smug as they are buoyed by their new found popularity."

  • "On our trip to NYC we solicited friends who used to live there for restaurant and bar suggestions. One friend used to live above Resto and said it was a place she ate at all the time. We started at the bar with a pair of Belgian beers we never knew existed. I cannot remember their names, but my wife got something like an IPA (they didn't have any actual IPAs) and I got a tripel. Both were brands I had never heard of...they were really good. Dinner followed. My wife got the short rib and I got the monkfish. Both were cooked superbly, and the flavors were out of this world. The waitstaff was fun, energetic, and engaging. They have us other good recommendations for our trip. This has to be on your list."

  • "Who serves a burger only medium well with no lettuce and tomatoes in NYC?. Nor could I order a side of lettuce and tomato or sub my fries for salad. Here. Have an overcooked, dry cake of meat with some shreds of red onion, a starchy bun, and more fried and salted starch with no options for temperature variation or anything leafy and fresh. If you've ever wondered what a burger in Kuwait or Pyongyang might taste like, try this place. Wait staff was wonderful but I will not return or recommend unless the chef adds a little more flavor and life to his brunch."

We had a fantastic charcuterie from next door (The Cannibal is owned by the same folks); the deviled eggs on pork fried toast are truly evil in all the good ways; and the lamb tagliatelle special was hearty yet balanced. The servers were friendly, entirely attentive, and very knowledgeable. And the wine was superb. The only caveat is that the place is very loud. Perfect for festivities but probably not for a first date. Not a ding, just something to think about when making your rezzies. But what a charming, food-driven gem."

Poor food selection that isn't made well, the wait is horrible (waited 30 minutes just to be seated, then waited almost an hour between our apps and main course!), way too expensive too.   • "I've been to Resto twice now, only for brunch, and both times with a group of 8 people. The Bloody Marys are exotic and excellent. The food is delicious - very home style, comfort-type food. Gotta go for the hangover pasta! The service is extremely welcoming, particularly given that I was with a group both times. The second time I was with parents, boyfriend's parents and family members - everyone really enjoyed the experience."

  • "The salads we ordered were very good, but the main course chicken was for some reason very bad. In fact it was inedible. My cousin left it on his plate and when I tried it, I could only eat one bite. When a main course fails this big it kills the experience. Also, the pot au creme was too "liquidy" and too sweet and topped with canned whipped cream. It tasted like mediocre pudding from a diner. We also left that without finishing it. And the fries were heavy with oil but tasty when dipped in the mayonnaise. I really thought the food at Resto would be great. Maybe they had an off night."

Our group decided to share several dishes including the short ribs, beet salad, frites and cauliflower special. The foo was expertly prepared and presented. This is where I must point out that the staff was attentive throughout the meal. We even lingered after the meal to finish our conversation and we didn't feel at any time that the staff was trying to kick us out to re-sear. This was an all-around great meal and I would not hesitate to go again or recommend to others!! Please check it out for yourself!"
