A word from Zona Rosa
Small plate Mexican dining in downtown San Jose"s historic Rose Garden.

Our dishes honor the cookery of Mexico with a focus on masa. The cuisine of Zona Rosa is Mexican but with a twist. Executive Chef, Anna Zamora Pizzo takes the components of an authentic Mexican dish and adds modern flavors and fresh seasonal ingredients. Everything is home-made and made from scratch. We hand press our tortillas using fresh, organic corn masa from La Finca.

We strive to be a farm to table kitchen and whenever possible, we use local and organic meats, poultry & produce as well as sustainable seafood sanctioned by Monterey Bay Seafood Watch.

Zona Rosa features wines, beer and coffee from local vendors including J Lohr, Barefoot Coffee, and Russian River Brewing Company.

This might be one of the smallest restaurants I have ever walked into. I highly recommend making a reservation -- it fills up quickly. Everything we had for dinner was absolutely amazing. We had the bacon guacamole, duck enchiladas, and salmon tacos. All were amazing. It is a little tight in the restaurant, but the staff is incredibly friendly. I can't wait to come back and try more goodies!!

Love the fresh ingredients and innovative approach to food from South of the Border, You must get the chips and sauces that are so yummy. This is not a place for a large group - the seating is tight and some of the chairs are not the most comfortable. I would come back here again and again and recommend getting there for the beginning of the dinner service.

Small neighborhood gem. The food - wow! Never had better mexican food. The cocktails were excellent too. Food presentation was just as good the the food. The restaurant is rather small - 8-10 tables. They are scrunched together, so not a good place for a romantic dinner. We were out in an hour. Overall, very excellent food, but expensive.

This tiny restaurant is one you could drive by for years and not even notice, but I'm so glad a colleague of mine suggested we meet there for lunch. The food is authentic and very good - they take the time to prepare very tasty, attractively presented meals. Give it a try, I bet you'll be glad you did!

Lots of interesting ingredient combinations that resulted in delicious plates. Try the fried avocados, the chips with 3 salsa, duck enchiladas in mole, Stuffed Chile Relleno, and Tacos with Chorizo and Mole sauce. Plenty more to try out on our next visit. Small dining room is a little cozy, but the service was very attentive.

We have eaten at Zona Rosa four times in the past 5-6 months. The food has been consistently very good to excellent each time. However, the wait-staff service and the execution of our meals by the kitchen during our three most recent meals have been dreadful. The four of us each order a single main dish. The kitchen can't seem to get four plates of food prepared for one table at the same time. After a long wait for the meals to arrive, the plates come out one or two at a time. Invariably, it's our (by now ravenous and very cranky) kids who get theirs' last. Time between the first person being served and the last can be up to 20 min. Also the wait staff have twice (in four visits) messed up our orders, causing even longer delays.

First of all, I love the food at Zona Rosa. The sauces and masa are to die for and the quality of the meats superb. However, they really, really need to get their act together on the service end. They get one point for seating us right away and setting the table, but they didn't bring menus until after we asked. Also, the waitress was having trouble uncorking our wine and told me it was because I was making her nervous. I would totally recommend this restaurant (and I always do) but I do warn friends that the service is hit or miss.

The place is so small it's difficult to even get to your table. The restroom is in the back through the kitchen. Because the dining room is so small and they are maximizing the number of tables, the noise level is very high. It was hard to have a conversation. The decor is charming and it could be nice spot for a romantic dinner except for the feeling of being crammed in and not being able to hear. The food was great. I'd like to go back, but my husband didn't enjoy the meal because we couldn't really chat. We also had to wait 15 minutes for our reservation.

This a very noisy place due to the small interior so conversation was difficult. Food was very good, very fresh & innovative. Our service though was rushed, we were asked if we wanted dessert midway through eating our main course. We said we were still eating & not sure about dessert yet. Then when we had finished that course the bill was presented as soon as the dishes were taken away & we were not asked if we had decided to have dessert or if we wanted anything else. it felt like we were being rushed out as they wanted the table.

Salsa appetizers, jalepeno margaritas, duck, stuffed pepper, all perfect. Service was very rushed this time. We had barely finished and server was trying to get us out the door...and we had only been there 45 minutes. Most restaurants allow at least 1 hour to 1 hour and a half for a table. Assume it was isolated event.

Was in the mood for Mexican food. We were in the area. Read the reviews and thought we'd give it a try and so happy we did. Although, it only really seats 32 people at a time. The food and the atmosphere was a pleasant surprise. You get nice portions with an awesome taste. We are so happy to have a great little Mexican food place to go. Do give a try you won't be disappointed.

Enjoyed the food. A bit too pricey. $11 for 3 tortillas and about 3oz of salsa with cheese on top is a tad bit over rated for me. Did not appreciate being asked to leave few minutes after we paid our $160 ticket! The waitress kept forgetting our order and did not bring everything we ordered. Will not be returning.

We enjoyed our food - every dish had several layers of flavor with unexpected ingredients. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for some unique Mexican food. The restaurant is very popular and very small. We had 6:30 reservations on a Friday night and the hostess looked surprised when we walked in and said we had a reservation. We noticed that she did that with everyone - kind of like she didn't know that her restaurant actually took reservations. We were seated at 7 - 30 minutes late.

The restaurant is tiny. We chose to sit outside and we were comfortable. Portions are smaller than most other restaurants. My friend and I shared three plates for brunch and loved all of our selections. Our favorite was the Chorizo frittata dish. The service was a little slow but we did not mind as we were people watching and enjoying the nice weather.

i read in one of the reviews that it would be best to attend there after noon, so i made a reservation at 2 p.m. on a friday afternoon. Parking was difficult to find. First impression of the restaurant: it appeared small, but very cozy for small groups of customers. My boyfriend thought it was a garden shop for the overflow of plants on the outside and the rose emblem on the window for the restaurant. Food was delicious, but heavily overpriced. Good customer service. I don't think a reservation is needed unless you want that open dining table points. It was just me and my boyfriend at 2 on a friday afternoon...no one else there. Music was blasting loud, but i guess that is better than the associates listening in on our conversation.

Welcome into a warm and inviting kitchen that extends out a few more feet to accommodate some hearty tables for new friends. The staff bustles about much like a large family would in a busy kitchen before a great celebration. The celebration is the tastes that will find their way to your table. The drinks were an explosion of flavor, the sopa was delectable and the dining experience was one I will repeat again and again.

My family and I have eaten at Zona Rosa for lunch on three occasions. The food has always been terrific - innovative and varied menu with many traditional Mexican elements that have been respectfully updated. The service has been inconsistent. We almost didn't go back after our last experience, in which the waiter forgot parts of our order and was unable to clearly communicate our requests (one of our kids is gluten- and lactose-intolerant) to the kitchen staff. This time, the service was better. However, our meals still came out at different times. Two plates came out together at first, one was delayed by about 5 min and the other delayed by another 5 min or so. The wait staff and kitchen need to better coordination.

The pork was delicious - tender, not overcooked. Portion was large enough to make two meals of it. The homemade tortillas had a great flavor. Pork chile relleno also outstanding. The guacamole was only interesting. Mexican fusion? Don't expect to be seated at your reservation time. We had to wait over a half hour beyond our 7:30 reservation. The people before us had to wait 45 minutes. Service was very slow because they were also making large to go orders in this tiny restaurant (I counted 22 chairs total). The most disappointing part was the sticky table. Even though the server wiped it off, it was still very sticky. So was my fork. I asked for another but spread out my napkin to put it down on the table.

We were a party of two and unfortunately the tables for two are squeezed behind the front door so you had everyone passing your table and the constant cold and hot and sound when deoor opened and closed. Would go back with larger party because food brings you back. Drinks were also good but glares could be a bit bigger

Everything, I mean EVERYTHING was delicious. The surprise crunch of pistachios in the guacamole, the thickness of the chips, made this appetizer sophisticated, even though it's only guacamole and chips. The food was delectable! My boyfriend has the carnitas: they wee tender and delicious. I had the ceviche, and I liked it ver much. The size of the tostadas was a little surprising, though---smaller than I expected. My favorite was dessert and the cocktails! We have the horchata ice cream, white sangria and a margarita with undertones or jalapeño. One of the best dining experiences I've had in the Bay Area so far. Delicious!

Visited Zona on Valentine's Day, small but energetic vibe. Ate outside (they had heaters). Our waiter was delightful, knowledgable, and attentive. The food was unusual, well-spiced, and amazing. I had the carnitas which were served in a mole with rice. My husband had the chorizo tacos, both were ample portions. Especially since we'd already enjoyed the guar with bacon and pistachios (a meal in itself) and the soup of the day, which was a creamy carrot with two meaty meatballs-delicious. The cilantro margarita was a little sweet, surprisingly, for me. Definitely a place we could go to weekly. Reminded us of eating in Paris, as the cars on the Alameda zoomed by (but since it was late, there weren't that many) Make reservations!
