A word from Char No. 4
Char No. 4 is a whiskey bar & restaurant inspired by a passion for bourbon. The name refers to the practice of aging bourbon in charred new oak barrels, which gives bourbon its characteristic sweet, caramelized flavors and its beautiful amber hue. Char No. 4 features over 150 American whiskeys and serves a menu of American fare with a focus on smoked meat. The American whiskeys are augmented by an extensive list of whiskeys from Europe and beyond as well as a selection of all-bourbon cocktails.
Char No. 4 is located in a 19th century row house in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. The design environment takes inspiration from this tradition in its treatment of light, its use of color, and in its nod to the form and construction of whiskey barrels both within the water-jet cut pattern of the steel facade, and in custom designed light fixtures. A field of large cylindrical pendants suffuse the space with a tawny glow that sets a mood of sophisticated conviviality for both drinking and dining.

Char 4 always offers something special in the way of great food and interesting beverage choices, as long as you love a variety of Bourbon, which I do. We have been frequenting this place since it opened. It is a staple in the vast selection of quality establishments in the vicinity. For brunch, lunch or dinner its always been good. We love Derby Day when they offer Mint Julips and a chance to pick a winning horse in the race. Try the shrimp and grits.

  • Good brunch at Char 4

Was here for brunch with a friend. Had eggs n grits -- they were very tasty. A huge portion that I couldn't finish. Oh, and bacon, which was thick cut and yummy. We also had a few bourbon bloody marys that were pretty good, though I tend to like them a bit spicier. Only drawbacks were: it was a hot, hot day and it was fairly hot in the restaurant. Not unbearable, but hot enough that when I got up, my chair had sweatmarks where my legs were touching it, and my skirt was stuck to me. Ew. The chairs were also not super comfy, and the decor is kinda meh. Otherwise, this would be a 5-star place: very good food & drinks & service.

  • Not really a Barbeque Restaurant

We wanted to go to a restaurant that featured barbeque, and selected Char No. 4 because it was near the Cobble Hill Cinema. We had pork sandwiches which were very good, but that was only option available. Noise level was a little louder then we had expected, which is why the rating is 3 stars, not 4.

Char No. 4 is one of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood, with consistently "very good" food and friendly service. They're good with reservations, meaning you don't wait for 15 minutes despite having made a reservation--a.k.a. prompt seating. The four of us enjoyed our dining experience, though the restaurant is somewhat noisy. If you're into a quiet spot, this isn't the place.

This is a great spot for a date or dinner with friends, as the food, drinks, and service are all 4 star. The one caveat is that the main dining room is VERY loud, so be prepared to yell. Have a bourbon cocktail (try the Hound Dog with grapefruit and mint) and definitely do not miss the lamb pastrami appetizer! This restaurant is a meat lovers paradise, and well priced.

I like Char No 4 a lot and will be back, but since I've been sent this thing, I will tell you two things that were disappointing about my last meal. !. the cucumber soup was billed as having grilled (I think) shrimp in it. My date and I had a hard time locating any shrimp. When we did the pieces were so small that any grill effect was lost. It seemed like the kitchen ran out of shrimp for the soup. 2. The dessert seemed like it had not been baked that day- the chocolate tart. It was really hard to put a spoon through it.Drinks- the bourbon tings were delicious and well-crafted. The service was very nice. Also, thanks for taking reservations.

my wife and i have eaten here several times. every time has greeted us with a flavor explosion and something innovative. the food is very accessible, but it is way more complex, varied, and deep than your average american-influenced eatery. We had the soft-shell crab sandwich with slaw and also a side of the bbq baked beans. sounds 'pedestrian' right? WRONG. i have never experienced so much flavor on one sandwich. the slaw was smoky and chipotle-ey (it's a word, trust me). the beans were sweet, hearty, and satisfying. yum. our server was also very knowledgable, polite, and accommodating. all-around - a great experience.

Our food arrived in this order with about 5 minutes in between each: main course, appetizer, cocktails - once we were served, our waitress never came back to check on us to see if we needed anything else. We watched our cocktails sit on the bar waiting to be picked up for over 25 minutes after we ordered them. We had to get up in order to find our server to get our check. Food was average at best and clearly the kitchen and wait staff do not have their act together. When we left, we passed by our server and three others. Not one person said goodbye or thanked us for coming.

The brunch was yummy--unpretentious but creative. I had the specials: beet and bourbon cured lox with homemade poppy cream cheese on brioche and French toast sticks with maple custard (as an app for the table). Having custard instead of syrup means more sticks to the French toast sticks! The lox was something special. The greens were bitter dandelion type, which I quite enjoyed though for everyone. My friends enjoyed their eggs and grits breakfasts, though said the grits are grainier than they are used to. I enjoyed the biscuit bites I stole. The booths are a little dark in the front room and noise level is "energetic", but that didnt bother me. The back room has lots of natural light but can only seat parties of 4 or fewer.

Char No. 4 is consistently my go-to restaurant in the neighborhood. Their menu is always interesting, and the dishes were wonderful. The Wild Boar Sausage currently on the menu is spectacular. Service and knowledge of the staff is impressive. The bartenders and waiters study the menu and whiskey list and can explain them all in detail. This place is great because of their acknowledgment of food allergies. They always have a gluten-free option (usually more than one) and the servers know whether a dish has gluten in it or if it could be made without it. They also have multiple vegetarian dishes on the menu as well.

I love coming to Char No. 4 for brunch. I'm always torn between the biscuits benedict which are served with bacon gravy (in lieu of hollandaise), and the bacon cheddar grits with poached eggs, which are served with fresh green onions. Either way I always have to get a bourbon bloody mary which always comes a bit pickly and salty...just how I like it. The coffee is strong. The food is reasonably priced for the neighborhood and quality. Best of all you can (and should) make reservations online and just stroll in at brunch time. I'm there at least every other weekend. Yumm.

This is the second time there and I can confirm the positive impression I had last week. Food is consistently good, neat in presentation, although a kind of overpriced along with the cocktails available for brunch. The one I tasted this Sunday was definitely not my best choice but the other lime cocktail(s) I tried was excellent. Highly recommend, especially for a party of 4, seated in one of the amazingly comfortable booths. Most restaurants of this quality and price range tend to forgo comfortable seating for visually appealing but rickety/vintagey, design forward furnishing. Whether this choice is for budget reasons or to enable a 2-hr turnaround of tables, whatever the reasons, after eating at Char No. 4, I'll take more notice of "comfort level of seating" when giving my opinion of a dining experience. My dining partners had 1 glass of wine, a cocktail for me, an entree each, shared an appetizer, two desserts. Total bill w/ tip = $215. Last words: Perfect portions. Able to speak freely w/o shouting. Must order: SMOKED HALF CHICKEN. Unforgettable.

Char No. 4 is now officially the top of my list of favorite restaurants! I live in Brooklyn and I've tried a good many of the amazing restaurants in the borough, so I must admit to having become a bit jaded. I had heard that Char No. 4 was good, but I didn't expect to be blown away by each bite of every dish at our table and by each sip of every drink that we ordered. There were six of us, and we can be a loud group, but there was silence at the table at each bite with bursts of "oh my good, yum!" The service also was amazing. We had two little ones with us, and she answered their questions about the menu with as much attention, care, and patience as ours. A perfect night out!

I am disappointed in Char No. 4. I take some responsibility as half my party showed up late, but that said, the hostess tried in vain not to show her disdain. The rest of the staff all seemed very grim and unfriendly. This was a huge turn-off. The food was a total disappointment. The steak I ordered had no taste, and the fried pork appetizers tasted like something Burger King cooked up. The room next to the bar is cramped and noisy.

The foods was very very good. Not amazing, but definitely worth trying. I find the food under-seasoned - but dishes are still tasty, fresh ingredients, meats cooked perfectly. I HIGHLY recommend the fried cheese curds. They have drastically improved (different cheese, larger curds, piping hot). Also, skip the hangar steak. It's boring. The meat is fine, it comes with potatoes, but overall blah. Last: When booking online, I asked for something special (anything, seating, whatever) b/c it was a special occasion. And we got nothing. No acknowledgment, NADA. THAT was more disappointing than the food. First time I have EVER been to a restaurant & such a request has been 100% ignored. Not a special occasion spot for that & reasons above.
