  • The presentation of our food
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 1/10/2013
The presentation of our food was nice and the food was tasty. However, most of the portions were very small. The salmon was extremely tiny and not worth the 3 for $30 so it would be hard to visit this restaurant on a normal night. The servings do not live up to the prices. Our waitress was nice despite spilling a glass of red wine on the table and a couple of us while having to reach. Would love to go back for dinner but after the small servings and large prices doubt it will happen..

  • Good, not great

Good, but nothing outstanding. The food was appropriate for the price point, but nothing remarkable that would drive you to come back. It seems to be a one time thing, but both meals that were ordered came with brussel sprouts that were inedibly salty. I kept looking around for a hidden camera like this was some sort of joke. Others that I know that have dined here have said the problem was corrected. The wine on tap is cool and the rooftop bar is awesome, however.

First visit and would def return. Trout entree was the best ever! We were a party of seven and they sat us in a booth. Tables would have been a better option beyond six so make that request if you are a larger group. We arrived on time but were told we needed to wait ten minutes so the servers could prepare. Not sure what that was about other than to get us to spend money at the bar first. Service was great and the decor is wonderful. A nice new addition to Upper King St.

Overpriced, but excellent food. I hate spending $30 for an entree and leaving hungry. The scallop dinner only has 3 scallops, plus 1 small side dish. I would not have felt robbed if the dinner had 6 scallops.

I thought the food was pretty good but not really worth the price. It was very expensive and pretty small portions. I like how they have wine on tap. And our waiter was very good and attentive. We did wait to be seated (with reservations) for about 30 minutes. There were plenty of open tables so I am not sure why. The rooftop bar is really cool and definitely worth going to for a few drinks. I will probably go back for drinks and apps but not for dinner.

This is a modern upscale restaurant. From the moment you enter the large bar area you know you are in a unique place. The bar is expansive and the wines on tap insure a perfect temp. We sampled numerous items from appetizers to entrees. Nothing disappoints. One of us had the rare seared tuna. You will want more. The wood grilled blue crab soup will have you begging for more. One of the group loved the heirloom apple salad which was crunchy and refreshing. The sauteed mussels were bathed in a flavorful broth. The scallops are too die for. You must do the truffled chicken pot pie or you have not lived. Finally, the lime semifreddo and charleston pluff mud pudding will make you feel like you have died and gone to heaven.

STARS is a great new addition to Charleston! We had a wonderful meal (the salmon, short ribs, and chicken pot pie were outstanding) and the service -- thanks to server Shady -- was attentive without being cloying. We even had a manager stop by to see how we were enjoying our experience, which was a nice touch. We will definitely be back!

Roof top Bar is lots of fun and has great atmosphere. Service was ok, server came to bring water- never introduced himself. We thought he was just the water service until he finally asked us for our order, it was only after we asked did we get his name (Aaron). The appetizers were excellent, wife's lobster was under cooked(realized once most had been eaten), steak was decent. We tried the wine on tap, mediocre at best. Timing for service was off, it was clear our main course had been finished for some time, potatoes were room temperature, Lobster the same. Clearly the restaurant being fairly new still has a lot of service issues to work out. We ran into some friends dining there as well, they also had under cooked lobster.

I am a 16 year Charleston resident and self-proclaimed foodie. I dined at Stars for the first time Friday night and it was delicious! I only eat fish and was with a strict vegetarian and we were both very very happy. She has complained for 30 years of being served lukewarm zucchini when ordering a vegetarian entree in an upscale restaurant. Not the case here! In a town obsessed with bacon we shared wonderful vegetarian dishes and salads that were beautifully seasoned, fresh and stood on their own. Our server Jerry was great...thanks for a great night.

  • Beautiful Space - Poor Service
    CGC72
    Dined on 12/6/2012
Beautiful interior and the rooftop bar is equally attractive. Unfortunately, our food was moderate at best. The filet I ordered was miniscule despite paying a price typically associated with a much larger steak at other downtown restaurants. I spoke with another "foodie" a couple days after our meal and he had been disappointed with the same thing. Most unfortunate was the service. Although the restaurant was only perhaps half full, it took absolutely forever to get our meals. Making things worse was the server was clearly a rookie, perhaps even failing out of "waiter school", and lacked any of the finer skills associated with exceptional service.

The quality of the food is well below the level of the top Charleston restaurants. My daughter and I shared the roasted eggplant and polenta appetizer and it was very bland. The Kale salad was good. Our entree's were chicken and dumplings and swordfish with a ginger carrot purée. The swordfish was extremely salty and undercooked. The chicken and dumplings was bland and and oddly presented. Overall, I would suggest stopping in for a drink but head down King to The Grocery or The Macintosh for excellent food!

Great decor, but one of the loudest restaurants we've ever been in. Also, the AC needed to be turned a few notches cooler! It fluctuated so much, and we were cooked by the time we left! The lobster and grits were wonderful, but the swordfish was brought out COLD! We sent it back, and instead of bringing a fresh piece, we think they microwaved the dish we sent back. The fish had shrunk, and was rubbery. The waitress said it would be taken off of our bill, and that the manager would be over. That took another thirty minutes to happen, manager, bill repair, etc.! We had already waited a ridiculously long time for our entres, but we were patient since they were busy. We won't rush back to Stars!

Only been open for 30 days but destined to becme one of Charleston's hot spots. I would classsify the food as extraorinarily well done comfort food. The menu was limited but we spread out the appetizers, main courses and the desserts among all of us and everyone's selection was fantastic. The vegetables were well cooked and tasty as were the dumplings. Seems unusual to say but you must try the chicken and dumplings. The Acai Berry sorbet was unbelievable at the end. We took a quick tour of the rooftop but unfortunately it started raining so we did not get to experience it. It has the potential to become a real magnet. Enjoy. We will be back....

I am a local. These guys have a long ways to go before it is where it needs to be. food was not good. cold. overly priced and server was nice but disconnected(she interrupted us in mid conversation at least 6 or 7 times). if you re going to drop $200 go to Halls or FIG, those places deliver. I am pulling for the guys at Stars, but they had better fix things if they want to stick around in a VERY GOOD restaurant scene in Charleston.

I took my boyfriend to Stars for his birthday. This was my 2nd visit to Stars. We loved the food! It was awesome. The service was great too. The rooftop bar was fun and nicely furnished. The only negative was the bartenders at the rooftop. They were not very friendly and they threw our half-full beers out when we walked over to look at the view for about 1 minute! The first time I visited the rooftop, the bartender threw out my half-full beer when I turned around and talked to a friend, but never left my barstool. I will return to Stars, but keep my hand on my drink!!

Stars lived up to its month old hype in many ways. We started out on the rooftop bar, which is stunning. Cocktail server made a mistake on one of the drinks, but the scene was hopping. We were plush banquette in full view of the kitchen. The appetizers we ordered curiously never came, although the kitchen sent a couple of other appetizers to the table to share. When questioned about our original order, the server sort of mumbled that she would go ahead and put the order in. Our appetizers and entrees arrived at the same time. Not good. She did not charge us for the late arrivals, but still wierd because she never apologised. Food was deliciously prepared, straightforward American fare. Decor is understated and comfy. Will return.
