Our waiter, Colin I believe, was outstanding, working with us to provide a gourmet dining experience AND get us to the NYC Ballet on time. He even provided directions for us and brought us a dessert he thought we would enjoy--and we did! Incredible experience! Although it was expensive, it was worth every cent. Even our 12 & 13 year old daughters enjoyed the food and ate every bit. Perfect!

  • Overall, the meal was wonderful
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 5/1/2008
Overall, the meal was wonderful and the service was very attentive. I had one major problem that I didn't feel was addressed properly. The mustard greens that were part of my dish were inedible. I enjoy bitter greens very much and cook with them regularly, but these were so bitter that it made the dish very hard to eat. Everyone in my party agreed and I said something to the server. He said he would mention it to the chef but reminded me that mustard greens are supposed to be bitter. His tone was condescending and there was absolutely no follow up on his part that he spoke to the chef. At a restaurant like Gramercy Tavern, it's inexcusable to a) have inedible ingredients in a dish, and b) find a server with little to no regard.

Maybe my 5th or 6th time there, wonderful food as always. My only negative would be that the staff spoke very poor English and when they told you which item you had in the tasting menu it was VERY hard to understand. We were a table of 4 and caught maybe 50 percent of the words spoken.

as usual, danny meyer is the king of doing the "right thing." i got a confirmation call from a very nice person, even though i was instructed to confirm on my own. she politely asked me if this was a special occasion, and mentioned in a very diplomatic way what the dress code was. the dinner was great, and a member of our party who is a strict vegetarian was hand-held through the menu by a terrific waiter. a delicious cake to take home was a true bonus and makes us believe that if danny is behind the restaurant, that is the place for us! i have been giving out his book, "setting the table" to all the people who work for me in my home, and they love it!

It was a beautiful evening, the service was excellent and the food was good. The foie gras special was exceptional, the pork belly and the duck terrine were beautifully done, but neither stood out from what is available out there. The smoked lobster was fine for lobster but very disappointing under those circumstances: it had no smell or taste of smoke and showed almost no hint of the chef's hand. At those prices, fine and good doesn't quite cut it. Every morsel of food should have been outstanding and it wasn't.

  • The food at Gramercy tavern
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 4/29/2008
The food at Gramercy tavern restaurant was outstanding! The composition of my main course (the fish special of the day) was elegant and simply delicious. Although we already had enough the dessert was irresistable. The atmosphere was very enjoyable. The only slight criticism is about the service: the service was friendly and very attentive but unfortunately not really knowledgable. The reservation via open table was easy and reliable, the restaurant called me 2 days prior to our reservation to reconfirm = perfect. We came back for lunch at the more casual tavern 4 days later and had a simple but great meal there.

    Dined on 4/28/2008
Everything about Gramercy Tavern was incredible, except I was dissapointed with my entree. My boyfriend and I loved our appetizers and desserts and his entree was great, but the Halibut that I had was bland, uninteresting, and in fact, a bit cold. Though that did not taint my experience becasue I love USHG, especially Gramercy Tavern, I was a bit shocked that something like this was on the menu. Other than that, two thumbs up!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005

Considering all of the rave reviews, Gramercy Tavern was quite disappointing. The black fish was too tart, bordering on sour, and instead of any complexity of flavors, I found the the saffron to overwhelm the dish. The tagliatelle was pretty good, but not the best I've had by any means. Service was extremely slow, and the waiter hardly checked on us. Needless to say, the experience did not measure up to the bill. I regret spending one of my limited meals in New York at this restaurant.

Wished they had more vegetarian friendly dishes, they have a vegetable tasting menu but that doesn't mean that it is vegetarian, we learned the hard way when a vegetable risoto came with clams even though we told the waiter we were vegetarian. we had to send the same dish back 2 more times until they got it right (sort of rediculous). other wise it was a nice meal.

  • Gramercy Tavern's service
    DManNJ
    Dined on 4/18/2008
Gramercy Tavern's service was impeccable from start to finish. The service we got from everyone at our table was ideal. The menu choices were excellent and our meals were well prepared. My suggestion for improvement would be to increase the portion size of the main entree. I ordered sirloin with short rib and got 3-4 petite slices of sirloin with one small short rib. Both had excellent taste, but I was a bit underwhelmed by how little food there was. The portions definitely seem smaller but more artistic with the new chef. The pastry chef was a star!. The chocolate tart and warm chocolate pudding were among the best chocolate desserts we've ever had. An overall good experience.

This was not my first great dining experience at Gramercy Tavern! It's fame is well earned, and a meal there will always be on my agenda while in New York! After dining at lunch, I asked for a recipe for a fabulous rhubarb chutney, served with a fabulous cheese plate dessert entree. Upon arrival home, and opening my email... there it was, directly from the GT staff. As an administrator, I noticed the collegial teamwork amongst the team members, people who clearly wanted to be working at such a prestigious restaurant. The magic continues at Gramercy Tavern with sustainable, and enthusiastic energy! It's clear to me that this is one spot that will always be there for us all... well into the future!

We live in Paris but have been fans of the Gramercy Tavern for nearly a decade, and as this was our first meal with the new chef we were somewhat apprehensive. For no reason, as it turns out. The meal was slightly more vegetable-oriented than with Tom Colicchio, but we have moved in the same direction ourselves, so that was fine.
