A word from Au Midi Restaurant & Bistrot
For Muriel, cooking is more than a career; it is an ever-growing passion. Starting with a deep appreciation for the raw product and with unflinching attention to every detail, everything is done to create and present deceptively simple dishes. Open to every flavor, curious about new ideas, Muriel is constantly trying to refine her art. It is done with passion, deep knowledge and a humble attitude. Of course the flavors of Provence are often present in the dishes she prepares, but it is no surprise that many of these are also found in our area. Olive oil, garlic and artichoke, plus much of the produce are grown on this lovely Central coast. Muriel"s other tempting culinary creations are simply the result of her affinity for good food, no matter whence comes! With the husband greeting the customers and the wife feeding them, "Au Midi" is definitely a family restaurant. It is also a cosmopolitan place with a warm ambiance and a sunny soul!

As always at Au Midi, the food was perfect and the evening was amazing. The owner and his wife always make you feel like family and I could not think of a better place in the area to have a special night with friends are a loved one. Absolutely top notch.

Au Midi is operated by a French husband and wife team...and she's the chef. I've tried almost every entree on the menu over the years, and she's batting 1000. The desserts look tempting, and I've watched other guests go dewy with them, but I'm usually topped out by then. The wines are limited in number, but artistically selected for exemplars of most of the French regions and our local Santa Cruz Mountain wines...and they are definitely fairly priced ($30-60). Michel is gracious, cheerful, and gentle when he greets and serves guests. Put it this way: After Chez Renee closed, golly, 13 years ago, there was a gap for this kind of culinary intelligence in Aptos for a while...and now Jack and Renee come to Au Midi.

The mushroom soup was fabulous -- had a mushroom mousse dab on top of a puree of various mushroom types. The sliced leg of duck was incredible and the sauce so ooo-la-la French! Perfect. The cassoulet which was rich and flavorful as well. The chocolate Bergamote dessert my wife had was the best dessert she has ever had in a restaurant! My French rice pudding was also excellent. The only thing....we had made reservations thru Open Table and mentioned it was my wife's birthday and we wanted a special table but they didn't even ask for our name when we said we had reservations so didn't appear to know about the birthday. We complimented the owner & told him it was her b'day; he said we shld hv said something & he wld hv put a candle on.

We have been to Au Midi before and thought the food was good. This time, it was not very good at all. In fact it bordered on awful especially for the cost. Of the four of us, the only dish that was good was the mussels, which were very good. The other dishes were not finished by any of us. One was the duck which was tasteless and had a terrible consistency. Another was the cassolet, where the only real flavor was salt and the third was the scallops which also had an odd texture and were not cooked very well. The green salad was over-dressed. The service was also off - they told us it was because everyone came at once (we had 7:00 reservations) which didn't make a lot of sense. I'm sorry to say that I don't think we will go back.

A gem in a small shopping center. The food was excellent. Better french cuisine than we experienced in France. Also homey husband and wife team with the wife as chef. She also checks on the patrons personally even though the husband handles the front of the house. Menu is a bit limited but everything on it was great. Highly recommend the bergamot!

The Marinated Salmon & Organic Egg appetizer should win an Emmy or somthing for best appetizer. Wife and I both had Cassoulet which was also very good. Au Midi is a nice quiet venue which is a perfect setting for a romantic dinner.

The entree, wine/port, and dessert were thoughtfully prepared, incredibly delicious and well-presented. The wait staff was attentive and polite. The owner perused the table just enough that one knew their presence was appreciated. Thank you for a wonderful dinner!

Au Midi is the best restaurant in Santa Cruz, a hidden gem. Not the best location, unpretentious, and anonymous, but the food.... Hmm, yeah, the food... We discovered it last month and came back three weeks later for another treat. This is the real thing. The magret de canard is delicious, and for desert the Bergamote is out of this world.

An out of the way place, AMAZING food. The special soup "cream of onion, hazenut and basil oil" was the best soup we've ever tasted. Scallops (pan fried), also amazing. The only dish not 100% was the desert, "floating island" was a 4 on a scale of 1-10. If in the Santa Cruz area, it's a must eat. The service was fast, attentive, they were clearly out to please. They've done a decent job with a tiny space, however, it's all about the food.

This place was absolutely wonderful. The food is ridiculously delicious, the wine list very impressive, the owner = a gem of a man. Service was a bit spotty, but the food made up for any inconsistency. We had the Veal Sweetbread as an appetizer and I don't think I've had a more delicious dish in a very long time. The sauce in that dish was the closest thing I've ever been to heaven. Herby, sweet, a bit charred and incredible. The scallops, in the apple cider emulsion were so delicious. The Chicken Fricassee - epitome of comfort food elevated. The Floating Island dessert was perfect and absolutely beautiful to look at.

The bread alone was worth the visit and I heard another customer remark that "even your butter tastes better then anywhere else!" I have to agree. Every sauce is perfectly done and ideal for the dish it was used with. The salad was dressed just right. The wine was delicious and the perfect crisp cold for a white. Service was attentive, not intrusive. I'll be going back as soon as I can!
