We were very disappointed with our Mothers Day experience. The main dining room was not being used-not sure why.. so all the tables were set up in the banquet space (which we were not aware of). It had a banquet feel. We were seated for 15-20 minutes before we finally had to flag a waiter to take a drink order and the room was not crowded. Unfortunately we were not told it would be a buffet so maybe the food is better on a regular evening but we felt it was average. The chilled seafood was great but most of the entrees were your average buffet fare and at $65/person without drinks we expected a lot more from a restaurant of this caliber.

  • Mother's Day Brunch was great

The Ryland Inn was a beautiful setting for their Mother's Day brunch (although we ate at 5 pm). The banquet room is awesome. The food was great. A wide variety of items so the diner could choose breakfast, lunch or dinner items. Service was very good. The only downside was that a few food items had been in the buffet too long when we went through the first time. They had all been replaced by fresh items when we went back for seconds. Maybe it was just poor timing on our part?

This was the first time we dined here since the original Ryland Inn closed. The new incarnation cannot compare in any way. The food, service & ambiance were just "good". We were very disappointed & will not return. We went for Mother's Day at 4:45. Neither the Ryland Inn's website nor OpenTables mentioned that there would only be a buffet for Mother's Day. food, just mediocre . There were two risotto dishes, neither of which was creamy, no poultry other than the standard carving board turkey. Some of the seafood did not taste fresh. Desserts were mostly custardy little creations. We had a choice of sitting in a ballroom or an area that was somewhat like a hallway. The nicer rooms were not used on this occasion.

Change can be good or strange. We haven't been to Ryland Inn in several years. We liked the relaxed atmosphere, service was terrific. BUT, a lounge singer singing "White Room" by Cream???? It was disconcerting to say the least. Covers of Billy Joel, Elton John, Tony Bennett, etc. would be less jarring. Food on the whole was excellent, except some of the plating was too deconstructed and "precious". Pear salad components were in a line. Composed would make for better flavors.; Coconut cheese cake again deconstructed, hanging around the rim of a huge dinner plate. It should be billed as cheese cake with coconut flakes and coulis. Small things, I know, but it took away from the overall experience.

We did the tasting menu and I added the wine pairings. Best part of the meal: Ribeye and cheese courses were delicious with creative presentation. Not up to par: My snapper had something crunchy in it, which my husband’s didn't and I don't think it was an intended part of the meal. The lobster course was flavorful, but lobster itself was overcooked. The service was good, but not great. My wine was always served after the course was delivered, when the waiter noted the course was served. I have done many tasting menus and my experience is it is poured right before or just as the course is served. Timing was off. For the price of the meal, I expected more highlights. On the fence with this one.

Great dinner. Had the tasting menu paired with wines. We were able to enjoy the evening in a leisurely manner, as it was a Wednesday night and not busy. Everything was delicious, timed perfectly and explained. Had great conversation about the various wines. Living in the area and being friendly with the previous owner, we had been at the "old" Ryland Inn many, many times. We were interested to see how the new owners would renovate the restaurant and if they would be able to keep the fabulous dining experience Ryland was known for. We were not disappointed! The renovation is nicely done. The food was as unique and wonderful as it was in the past. It is pricey, as it was before, but for a special occasion it is a wonderful treat!

Lovely birthday dinner for my wife to conclude typical weeklong celebrations, matching or exceeding other top restaurants. From top to bottom, a beautifully designed experience. The fragrant, nicely arranged flowers planted outside presented a pleasant welcome. Interior is classically appointed but not stuffy. Waiter was gracious and helpful, particularly with accommodating our request to omit shellfish and pork. Our food came out a delightfully slow pace. Carrot & beet soup tasted fresh from the garden. Pasta mid-course was similar to spaghetti noodle but with added texture & buttery, pesto-like sauce. Halibut had masterful mix of slight crispness & then melts in your mouth. Tuna sat on avocado purée that was delightful. (dined 4/22/2013)

I have to say I had a wonderful time at the Ryland Inn. This is the first time back since it reopened. The food was superb, the service attentive. There are only a couple things I would recommend to them. Change the music. It was too loud and more suited to a casual bar. The sound level in the dining room with chandelier has bad acoustics with sounds bouncing all over the place. Perhaps a few slight changes and the restaurant will be 5 stars.

I was confused by the restaurant and still am not sure what to make of it. I want to give it another try, but either it will be really good or really bad. Ambience: On one hand, the new restaurant part is a an open, contemporary feel. However, the front lobby is quite a disparate feel from the rest of the restaurant. The lobby is dark and "old european" feel. Service: lobby staff were customer centric. However, wait staff seemed disorganized. We didn't have a server, then we did after a long wait, then we had a someone else. The 1st indifferent. The next good, but rushed. perhaps a glitch that day. Food: good, I think, but it took forever to receive it and our service experience was bizarre so I couldn't really enjoy.

The Ryland Inn more then lived up to its outstanding reputation. The initial exposure to the ambience is so pleasant. The staff is friendly, courteous and efficient, from the hostess to the parking valet. The menu is diverse, without being overpowering. The wine is innovative, and we actually ordered from the "wine geek" section. However, I go to a restaurant for the food. And, it was outstanding, from salad to entrée to dessert. The overall experience was phenomenal, but it was made even more pleasurable by our wait staff. They are to be complemented for their approach to their craft. I have found that many finer restaurants suffer from poor service, and I am not a tough sell. Please, don't change a thing. We will be back soo.

The Ryland Inn is a destination restaurant. My wife and I were lucky to get a table, and decided to go with the tasting menu. Be forewarned, the tasting menu is for adventurous food lovers as you will probably be eating some things that you have never tried before. Ours started with uni and asparagus custard, followed by tuna tar tar with shaved foie gras, grilled octopus and mackerel, lobster and asparagus, raw pork loin wrapped in sea weed, lamb brain, rib eye and bone in marrow, cheese and toast, and burnt orange ice cream. Everything, including the service, was impeccable. While the price is very high, the quality and presentation of the food makes this well worth the trip!

This is the second time I've dined here. I found the service to be ok, but was better the first time. The server was distant and seemingly interested in our overall experience. Food was excellent. It got a bit noisy as it filled up. I'd go again, but given the price tag the service should be stepped up a bit.

Excellent food. Limited menu for entrees. Pricey but nice for a special occasion. I was surprised by the noise level. I have a hearing issue and background noise can make it very difficult for me to hear. The noise level was so high that, though I was sitting next to my wife, it was very difficult to hear. Given the prices, I would have expected a more intimate ambience.

My husband, 7-yo son and I dined at the Ryland Inn for the first time last Friday night. We two had the tasting menus with pairings, and our son chose salad, gnocchi, & venison - all of which were delicious. The tasting menu was terrific, with our favorite course one that wasn't even on the menu: hard to describe, but a sort of spring-peas-&-carrots dessert - really fabulous. Service was excellent and not too overbearing, plus all the servers were very gracious with our son. (He is always exceedingly well behaved in restaurants, but of course at new places the staff don't know that, so the sight of him can cause some dread!) I was impressed by some unique & tasty ideas, e.g. powdered foie gras. We'll definitely be going back.

Some places have intimidating hostesses. Not here! Ryland finds a unique balance: class without stuffiness. Richard, our waiter, was warm but always professional And while the decor is crisp and wine list doesn't make you faint from the prices, there are really only two stars at Ryland. This first is the guest and the second is the food. The food is never presented as more important than those who have come to enjoy it. The tuna was so fresh, the short ribs juicy, the coffee crust on the venison so original in pairing with the endive. My wife's fork strayed to steal a bite of chicken from our daughter's plate - "I've never tasted anything this tender!" Given the choice to go anywhere, this is where we go!

Despite now living in the suburbs my wife and I are no amateurs when it comes to fine dining, she having lived in NY for 11 years and I for 4. The Ryland Inn was one of the best dining experiences either one of us has had and is unquestionably the best value we have ever see in a tasting menu. Chef Craig could easily be charging 50% more for this gem. Including amuse bouche and the 3 (!) dessert courses there were a total of 10 courses, almost all of which were 5 stars. Tuna tartar with shaved fois gras was a special highlight, as were the perfectly prepared duck and the surprisingly outstanding mackerel. I cannot wait to return.

We all wondered whether the new Ryland Inn could match up to the original. Fear not. It is better than before and is operated by people who really know and appreciate the restaurant business. Their staff is professional, charming and willing to please and will make suggestions that you can enjoy and appreciate. We had 4 meals among us and each one was thrilled with our selection. We had halibut, salmon, chicken and short ribs and there was not a crumb left. The wine list is great as were the appetizers and desserts. We were very excited to try the "new" Ryland Inn, but nervous that it wouldn't rise to the same raraified level of the original. We shouldn't have worried. It s still an elite "destination restaurant." Other than the mildly pushy up-sell on the chef's tasting menu, service, menu, food preparation, ambiance, and wine list all were as good as it gets. The sommelier seems slightly challenged, but only slightly.

If you want to feel sated, pampered & completely welcomed by a top-notch staff (from valet to hostess to maitre'd to waiters to sommelier), this is the place to go. Our party of 5 had 2 special requests (85th birthday and gluten free choices) & everything was beautifully executed from start to finish. We were led to a spacious table right in front of the fireplace. The food & wine recommendations were outstanding. Of special note: (salads) pear/arugula & market vegetable; (small dishes) the scallops/polenta & truffle risotto; (entrees) Venison & halibut. Desserts were fabulous & my mother-in-law's came out with a candle & singing for her birthday without us even giving a reminder. It is expensive & worth every penny! Amazing ambiance, too.

From the sweetbreads amuse bouche to the beignet + ice cream dessert!, the food and its presentation at Ryland Inn are well-nigh perfect. In some ways, the first and second courses even exceed the main courses in distinction of taste: try the crudo. My tuna main course was perfectly prepared; even chicken, ordered by a friend, was a happy choice. The service is perfect--helpful, never over-bearing. We knew this place years ago, under the old ownership and it was a very special place that we loved visiting......sublime food and ambiance. We were dying to try it now with the new ownership and new chef. It was deeply disappointing. It was my husband's 64 birthday and this was a treat for both of us. Well, before we even walked in, we heard very loud, terribly music. Uh oh. Not good. The decor was very ordinary, the noise level high, but we were anxious for our first taste of the food. There wasn't one dish that was special out different. I make better meals at home. The service was excellent however, the staff friendly, efficient, helpful, pleasant and friendly. But we go for the food, and we won't be going back. And still expensive.

This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. My fiancee and I had the Chef's tasting menu and it was incredible. 7 small and very original dishes. Plenty of food. The Ryland has the best wine list I've ever seen. They also offer a service where you can buy very expensive wines by the glass to taste. This way you can try a Grand Cru for example and not pay $400 for the whole bottle. You will want to drink the bottle anyway but its a great service. Highly Recommended.

The food was marvelous, the service was outstanding......... but the noise level was unbearable ! It was like being at a wedding - you literally had to shout to be heard across the table. We would go back, but only if they did something to mitigate the noise.

Diners remorse! Our small group of 5 were very disappointed with our experience with the new Ryland Inn. We re-located to Virginia and wanted to have a special dinner at the Ryland on our recent trip to NJ. We were regular customers when we lived in NJ years ago. Although the property and buildings were magnificent and excellent service...., the rest of our dining experience was very poor. We selected the tasting menu (based on past experience) for our group and can only describe the food as bad, especially for the price $99/person. Additionally, we chose the tasting menu due to the limited a'la carte menu. Our group all agreed we would not be visiting/recommending the Ryland Inn again.
